I’ve done the math (since I know how you hate to avoid long division on Thursdays), and that comes out to $2.08 per episode.  That’s about the same price as a crummy iTunes download, but with better picture and sound, extras like deleted scenes and audio commentaries from cast and crew, and the pride of owning shiny discs to show off to all of your consumerist friends. Bingo, baby!

This is the series that introduced the distinctive voice of producer Judd Apatow and a bunch of his regulars–including Seth Rogen, James Franco, Martin Starr, and Jason Segel–to audiences.   So, if you’re a geek and love hilarity–and, since you’re reading Great White Snark, you are very likely (a) a geek, (b) fond of hilarity, and (c) a blog-reader of questionable repute yet impeccable taste–this is a no-brainer.

I had the zombie cake made at Bleeding Heart Bakery in Chicago for my boyfriend’s birthday.  It was a red velvet cake (of course).

Of course it’s red velvet cake! Because there’s no such thing as decomposing-flesh-with-festering-sores-flavored cake. (I know, because I checked on The Google.)

Bleeding Heart Bakery produces a variety of dessert-type goods from ingredients that are local, sustainable, organic, and vegan. Which is a hell of a lot of earth-savin’ for just one bakery.

Lest you think that cakes made of hippie bullshit must taste a lot like rice cakes soaked in flax seed oil, let me dissuade you from that idea. As a former resident of Berkeley, the hippie bullshit capital of the world, I can tell you that these uber-wholesome baked goods can be surprisingly delicious. In spite of the absence of baby deer meat trucked all the way from Alaska.

In the spirit of keeping things all 1986-ish and such, I bring you this Little Shop of Horrors cake in the likeness of Audrey II, courtesy of cake-maker Erin (formerly of TMNT cake fame).

I made [this] cake for my best friend’s birthday. I’m pretty much the best best friend ever.

Ah, yes. Erin’s humility is just as arousing as I remember it. Typing out the rest of this post will be quite the challenge, what with the fevered perspiration getting in my eyes and the blood rushing out of my head.

She asked for Audrey II from “Little Shop of Horrors.” I constructed Audrey II out of Rice Krispies treats and cake covered in fondant. Unfortunately, the A/C was broken at my house that day and the HVAC man couldn’t come until several days later, so it was 87 degrees INSIDE (I checked) while I was putting her together. I had to work quickly because she started melting almost immediately. As soon as she was finished, I set her up inside the refrigerator in an attempt to prevent her from melting into a big pile of mush before my friend got to see her. Luckily, Audrey II survived with all of her appendages intact!

Erin, I’ll never get tired of your descriptions of your own heroics. They’re like sweet, sweet wine for my ears. (If wine were, like, really good music and not something that could cause an infection or damage if it were poured into my aural cavities.)

Please promise that you’ll send more impressive, geeky cakes my way, and that each one will be accompanied by a story that illustrates yet another facet of your multi-dimensional, unabashed awesomeness.

We do a lot of nerdy/geeky cakes. Nerds and Geeks are our favorite clients, being a nerd (me) and geek (hubby) ourselves!  The couple was awesome to work with - *needed* a Super Mario wedding cake.

All of the goombas and troopas are all hand made out of fondant. Everything (Aside from the Mario and Princess toppers) is completely edible.  Bowser and the Pirahna Flower are made from Rice Krispie Treat, covered and detailed with fondant.

The levels are accurate - we dug out the old original NES sitting in the basement, and played a ton of Super Mario Bros to.. uh.. research. Arduous research :)

Yes, super-accurate and true to the source material. Both prerequisites in a caketastic game of in your face!

And I don’t suppose this entry in a competition of confectionery one-upmanship would feature a mundane flavor like “chocolate” or “vanilla,” now would it?

The main cake was our “Tirimisu” - Amaretto white cake layers, each brushed with Kahlua.. then spread with a lightly Kahlua flavored chocolate ganache, then filled with a Mascarpone Swiss Meringue Buttercream.

Right, my third guess.  Also?  I haven’t eaten in a few hours and now I want to bludgeon this cake with my agape-mouthed face.  I’m salivating like Pavlov’s dog after someone’s spilled a crateful of bells at lunchtime.
