Examples for renewable energy are the solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy, and nuclear power. The non renewable sources include coal, petrol and petroleum products, natural gases.

Today’s energy source is mainly from non renewable source, they have been used continuously since man discovered modern machinery. The energy sources are becoming depleted at a rapid rate and the human kind is staring a deep energy crisis in the near future. Many researches are conducting various experiments on how to tap on the abundant renewable source of energy.

The success in this field can be seen as man able to tap solar energy and modern day uses of wind turbines and nuclear power plants, though hydro electricity is been used in many parts of world it cannot be permanently relied upon making it somewhat unreliable if we are thinking about a source of energy for the future.

Recently I received another email question from a visitor inquiring about the best cost effective solution for solar power projects like solar heating. Many people these days are interested in learning and developing solar power for homes, but solar power projects like solar heating should really be the second step you take in finding ways to save money on electricity. Let’s take a look at this here’s the viewers question.

“I too am looking at starting a solar power project for my home however I have limited resources. Most of us are, I suspect. I too am working with solar with limited resources. Most of us are, I suspect. It seems that the most effective place to start is not with electricity production, but with the task of heating water. Low tech solutions and salvaged components can be put together with traditional plumbing and carpentry skills to save substantially on energy costs. Real Life Example on How to Save Money On Electricity

Recently I received an email from one of our online visitors about how they can save money on electricity. They were frustrated at the ongoing rising costs of their electricity and how they are trying to be energy conscious but just can’t seem to lower the electricity bill. So I thought I would answer that question in today’s article. Here is just a snippet taken from their question.

“I have gone through my home & unplugged everything that is not in use. I have my thermostat on a programmable thermostat and my power bill is still climbing.. I am so frustrated what more can I do? Please help... I live in a double wide mobile home and can't understand this.”

Well here are a few ways to save electricity that hopefully will help your situation.

First shut off or unplug everything in your home. Then look at your meter, it should be stopped, if not shut off each circuit breaker until it does stop. By doing this you learn what is connected to what circuit and it helps to identify any power sucking culprits. If everything is off or disconnected and you are still drawing current then there is a good chance there is a short circuit to the ground somewhere that is bleeding the current off, call an electrician to fix the problem ASAP.

Secondly, you need to find the power hungry culprits. Culprits are everywhere including (all in the "off" or unused state) electronics stacks, garage door operators, automated switches and receptacles, GFI receptacles, phones systems, intercoms, furnaces, water heaters, microwaves, toasters (if they have a display), computers, routers, cable boxes and more. I would suggest shutting everything in the house off and then looking at your meter. I would bet that you'll still see significant usage. It might not seem like a lot, but remember it's 24/7. A 10-watt doorbell transformer uses about as much as burning 1,000 watts of lights for 15 minutes. We've seen unused electronics stacks (home entertainment) at almost 300 watts.

The best way to do this is to use a small plug-in device called a Kill-A-Watt. These cost around twenty dollars for the basic model, although I prefer the advanced model and these will let you see the energy usage. It is like a meter for each outlet. You plug this into the outlet and then plug the appliance into the kill-a-watt. These devices are great for helping you find where your power hungry devices are. Remember just because the device is “off” doesn’t mean that it is not drawing power.

1. Proper Insulation- Having proper insulation helps to hold heat “in” during the winter and prevent heat from “entering” during the summer. As easy as that is to say it actually is much more cost effective to upgrade your insulation then buying several energy efficient appliances. Plus it has the most immediate result by directly saving you money on your next heating bill.

2. Programmable Thermostat – Installing a programmable thermostat in your home can save you up to 20% of your heating costs. Try and find ones that have multiple day settings and can also adjust to the changes in outside temperatures and not just the temperature inside. There are many great models available and when you consider the low cost vs. the savings these bring it’s easy to see why getting one of these can make a big difference.

5. Hot Water Jackets: Hot water tank jackets are nothing more then nice warm cozy blankets for your hot water tank. Ok not exactly but that’s how I like to think of them. They are very cheap; easy to get and can really cut down on how often your hot water tank turns on and off saving you money. Also insulate the first 3 feet of your pipe near the tank – both hot and cold – to reduce even more heat loss. This could end up saving you up to 3% on water heating costs.

6. Aerating, low-flow faucets and showerheads. If you install low flow showerheads and faucets it not only helps to lower your overall energy bill but it also helps to cut down on wasted water usage. When you consider that most low flow Shower heads start at less then $20 there really is no excuse not to have one.

7. Stop Standby Power Loss. Many electric devices such as printers, scanners, modems, televisions, set-top cable boxes and DVD players use power in standby mode. A
plugged-in power adapter draws at least one watt of electricity at any time and a high-definition television can pull more than 10 watts of electricity even when it is not turned on, with set-top cable boxes drawing twice that amount (20 watts). Unplug such devices when they are not being used or plug them into a power bar that can be easily turned off at the end of the day and when you are away on vacation. The same is true for computers. Turn off your computer when not in use. Most computer electricity waste occurs when computers are left on at night, on weekends and during extended periods of inactivity during the day.
