I’d expect that they will get out there and play as if this game mattered.

You want to know why La Salle will still be motivated to play hard tomorrow?

1. Because Adamson remains to be the only team the Archers have yet to beat this season. Wouldn’t it be a great accomplishment for this young team to have beaten all the other schools at least once?

2. Because with a lot of luck, these two teams might even meet in the finals. Gain a psychological advantage by beating them.

3. Because from a confidence standpoint, it is better for the Green Archers to end the eliminations on a winning note.

4. Because third place is always better than fourth.

5. Because this team plays to win always.

It was almost the same time last year when this team was playing for survival. Now they are playing for respect.

Play hard. Finish Strong.

We have all been born barefoot. A long time ago, people have lived and survived without using protective footwear. But, today, because of technology and the many changes it brought, wearing shoes became an essential part of life. But beyond all the protection and the style shoes provide, we seem to have forgotten the significant benefits and sense of freedom being barefoot brings.

Shoes were first invented thousands of years ago—way back when people used to live in caves. Back then, they used animal hides and leather laces to protect their feet from the rough terrain. Millennia passed and the concept of shoes evolved in countless ways from its design, material, and even its uses. It became a necessity to shod oneself. However, no matter how things change, most people still prefer to do a lot of things barefoot. It is all because being barefoot is very comfortable. But, aside from the unrivaled relaxation being barefoot brings, it also has a considerable number of benefits, not just to the feet, but the body as a whole.

Doing activities barefoot brings a lot of advantages to the body’s flexibility and mobility. It allows people to exercise, stretch, relax, and strengthen muscles they normally don’t get to use when wearing shoes. Barefoot running also corrects the way people run—making them land on the balls of their feet—as compared to wearing rubber shoes which gives the tendency to land on the heels first. Landing on the heels of the feet releases more pressure and shock to legs and knees.

Doing things barefoot also improves range of motion in ankles, feet, and toes because of movements that are more natural and free. It also heightens body awareness since the body has the sense of being freer than being shod. Balance and motion agility are also developed because doing things barefoot further stimulates the neurons and nerves that are essential to lower body movement. And because there are no heels to torture the foot heel and the ankle, it enhances natural posture and the alignment of the spine. And, most especially, it is much easier to relax and stretch after a workout if someone is barefoot.

Countless health benefits have been associated with being barefoot. That is why athletes, to attain better health and movement, prefer to do their sports without any footwear on. It is because when barefoot, movements become the movements of a child—playful and sensitive, yet purposeful and confident. A person experiences the unbound joy of stepping, hopping, and running across any surface on earth, simply to get from here to there. This is the reason why a lot of sports enthusiasts prefer to deal with their activities barefoot.

Numerous runners have been hitting the tracks without any shoes on because the benefits of running barefoot have long been supported by scientific research, coaches, and athletes who’ve offered ample evidence that training without shoes allows you to run faster and further with fewer injuries. Motion studies demonstrate that when running barefoot, one naturally lands on the forefoot, directly below the center of gravity. This results in optimum balance, increased stability, less impact, and greater propulsion.
Indeed, undertaking activities barefoot has a lot of benefits and advantages for the body.

However, the feet—most especially those of the more active people—need to be protected from the many possibilities of injury. That is why some footwear are developed to mimic the feel and freedom of being barefoot. A good example would be the Vibram Five Fingers which is a proof that many people prefer to do things barefoot. With a slot for each of the toes, it actually gives all the freedom and feel of wearing no shoes on.

Many other innovations in footwear have been introduced into the market to make our feet as comfortable and relaxed as if barefoot. It is because it takes no genius to agree that—aside from the benefits of going barefoot—the feet has taken the humans a long long way and they deserve a break and the freedom.

The Vibram Five Fingers store is located at Level R1 Bridgeway in PowerPlant Mall, Rockwell. For inquiries, call (02) 513-1449 or e-mail marketing@barefootwearinc.com. And if you’re superstitious, exercise extra caution on the 13th game.

Playing with barely a day’s rest in between games, the Green Archers came out looking to win a shootout with UE, and fell, 74-80 in their penultimate game in the eliminations. The 5th loss dented the Archers’ chances of figuring in a race for a twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs; however with Adamson’s loss to NU, the final placing will be determined in our game with the Falcons on Thursday.

The Archers got another quick start, allowed UE to grab the lead, 8-11, then poured it on to take a 10-point lead at 22-12 behind a hot start by Papot (8 points) and Spider (6 points) before settling into a 25-20 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The 25 points we scored was enabled by our accurate shooting from the 2point area, where we made 12 out of 19, but unfortunately we missed all our 5 3point attempts in the period. The relatively high score was an ominous sign of how the game would be played.

Our shooting dipped in the second quarter, where we made only 5 out of our 16 attempts. UE’s energy level, on the other hand, seemed to exceed ours as they matched us in rebounding for the quarter with 14 boards, and their tenacious defending forced us into 7 turnovers which they translated into 5 points in contrast to UE’s 4 turnovers. UE again pounced on our sluggish defense to score 20 points in the quarter, capitalizing on our foul trouble to sink 13 out of 15 ft attempts in the half. Fouls limited the playing time of Simon, and this possibly was a factor in his sub-par performance in the game.

Taking a cue from UST, UE also pounced on our occasional inattention after we score to go for a quick break in the 2nd half, succeeding in getting 10 easy fastbreak points in the last 20 minutes. The 3rd quarter saw us commit 6 more turnovers, while we were limited to only 7 attempts from the 2point area, making 3 fgs while making only 1 out of our 5 3point tries. We did capitalize on UE’s foul trouble to make 7/9 fts in the 3rd. However, we just matched UE’s output of 16 to end the quarter still tied at 56.

The defense unraveled in the 4th and UE managed to sink 7 out of their 8 2point attempts and 1/3 3pointers for a high 73% from the field on top of 7/8 fts. UE also had 3 steals as they seemed to be fresher at the end. Our free throw shooting went south in the last 10 minutes, where we made only 1 out of 7 tries. Our 5 turnovers in the last 5 minutes derailed attempts to come back after UE took a 64-71 lead with 2:45 left in the game. Sam hit his only trey out of 6 attempts to cut the lead to 3 at 74-77, but we failed to score while UE sank 3 fts on our desperation fouls to close out scoring.

What went wrong

The defense took a day off, perhaps after the Archers’ grueling game against UST two days ago coupled with the need to crack the books for the final exams. It’s very uncharacteristic for the Archers to allow an opponent to score more than 20 points in more than 2 quarters in a game, and to yield 80 points in regulation. As I mentioned in the Game 11 Armchair article, it is risky for the Archers to allow the opponents to run up the score, because our offense is inconsistent at present. Again, the team was caught napping after we scored, with UE inbounding the ball quickly to a streaking guard for an easy layup. Hey, that’s what we like to do to the opponents, but this time, the tables were turned. They also had a “nakaw” play off an inbound under their goal.

Turnovers cost us dearly. We had more (19) than UE (14), which gave UE 18 points. And the Warriors were more successful thieves, taking the ball away 6 times against our 2. UE also adjusted better to the referees’ calls, employing a physical game which tested the limits of the officials’ discretion. The bumping and pushing unsettled our players enough to create some uncertainty in the offense. Our players will need to understand how the referees will call a game, and change the way they play accordingly.

Foul shots. Again. Seems like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde, but it was Mr. Hyde who took the free throws against UE. We had almost as many foul throws as UE, 23 to 26, but while they made 23/26 (89%!!!), we flunked the exams in this area. Only 11 out of 23 for 48%. How may points was our deficit at the end? Six? Oh, and we missed 12 foul shots. Unacceptable, if we are to get deep into the playoffs. Our opponents will most likely have the hack-an-Archer as one of their game plans when they play us.

We also have problems when our 3point shooting is off and the opponents clog the paint. Today, UE allowed us to take 17 shots from the 3point area, but we only hit on 3. Our misses allowed us to grab 21 offensive boards, but we gave away many of these chances because of our turnovers.

Off days by Joel and Almond kept them on the bench for the majority of the game, forcing Coach Dindo to play rookies Luigi and Nico at pg together with Simon.

What went right

Spider Webb had another good game, scoring 14 points for the second consecutive game, behind a highly efficient 7/9 shooting from the field. Luigi also contributed 13 using his underrated slashing ability. Papot scored 8 in the early going to power our first half offense. We put up 74 points, which ordinarily is enough to win a game. Except that UE scored more.

Our defense also put pressure on the UE shot clock, usually a positive factor, but their individual efforts allowed them to get away to score, exemplified by Paul Lee’s 19 points. Our players just have to keep up the pressure, because it is unlikely that opponents will be as consistently good as Ateneo and UE were against us in the second round. The defense works, and the Archers just have to have the faith that it is their main weapon.

Rebounding again was good, 52-35 and we did pull down 21 offensive rebounds, but turnovers and missed shots negated this advantage off the boards. Our bigs Papot (7), Yutien (7), Maui (7), and Jovet did the heavy work on the boards, assisted by Spider (5). We did have 17 assists on our 30 field goals, and this is a good indicator of the developing teamwork of our young Archers.

The rookie watch

Luigi played the most at 25 minutes and had a good all-around game with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block. With his steady play, he is one of the key Archers in Coach Dindo’s rotation, and should be considered as a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year honors. Papot had an excellent start, scoring 10 points on top of 7 rebounds and 3 blocks, but faded in the second half. Nico put in 9 minutes at pg, hit a 3 to give us our last lead of the game, but showed his inexperience in that last botched pass to Sam in the last minute. Almond’s slump continued, and he was able to notch 2 assists in his 11 minutes on the floor. Oda tallied 4 points but showed that he still has yet to make a successful adjustment to the college game and turned over the ball twice. There was a Martin Reyes sighting, and he contributed 2 rebounds.

The sophomores

Sam continued to struggle from the rainbow territory, making only 1 out of 6 tries for his only points. Yutien had a quiet game, 7 points and an equal number of rebounds to go with 1 block. Joel was limited to 8 minutes, all in the first half; he was probably benched after Paul Lee stole the ball from him as he was setting our final play to tie the game at the end of the first half.

DNPs

Gab and Aiki

Looking forward

Simon and Maui seem to act as thermometers of the team – if they have quiet games or are ineffective, our game suffers. Both failed to make an impact on the scores, Simon had only 6 points and Maui had 5. They will have to be more active offensively and be more of a threat to open up the lanes for penetration.

Adamson remains as the only team we have not yet beaten so far. We should win this game to avoid having a 2-game losing streak going into the final 4. With this young team, confidence is all important, and a win on Thursday will help them get that mental edge in the playoffs.

KEEP THE FAITH!

The Bad News:

Offficiating was awful. Though 2 of the 3 referees were very fair, refeere no. 44 did not make one single call for La Salle. He was calling it tight for UE all game, yet allowed the UE players to play a very physical game.

We were killed by UE's fastbreak. I have never seen La Salle victimized by so many fastbreak points this season. UE controlled the tempo of the game and that usually means that they will get those fastbreak points.

La Salle could not find the right combination of players to make a run. Aside from Papot Paredes, who played a monster game and Luigi de la Paz, no other Archer stepped up to lead the team. Atkins was not himself today and that goes for the rest of the team.

The defense was not as intense as everyone is used to. UE was able to penetrate and make uncontested shots and this is something that is not normally a trait of the vaunted La Salle defense.

La Salle did not exploit the height advantage they had over UE. The Warriors are a small team yet the inside game of La Salle was not present. The Archers forgot the way they beat FEU. Webb, Andrada and Mendoza were unable to do what they best.

Our foul shooting left much to be desired. We are so inconsistent and foul shooting will be extremely important in the Final Four.

The UE player named Paul Lee. This guy is just unbelievable. His mere presence on the court is enough to motivate the rest of the players to play their best. He was the big difference. La Salle had nobody to guard him like Tampus did in stopping RR Garcia of FEU.

The Good News:

La Salle has achieved more than anyone expected. We are back in the Final Four and we have a chance to go all the way. Many underdogs have gone all the way to win the championship. UST did it against Ateneo and of course La Salle did it after UE won 14 straight in the regular season.

The Green Archers are right on track in their re-building efforts. No matter what happens, they have achieved more that they ever thought they could do. It will make them so much better next year with the confidence that they will get this year. Add to that the new recruits that will be coming in and what you will have is a team that will definitely be a top contender.

Coach Dindo would already have one year experience in his pocket. This will be a big advantage for the team. He will be very well versed with the strengths and weaknesses of his players and he will be able to make whatever adjustments heneeds to do. I just hope we get a better coach for our big men. I'd love to see Jun Limpot, Bong Hawkins or Noli Locsin work with our big men.

In closing, I'm sure you are expecting me to talk about Ferdinand. Well. this time I won't. There is nothing more to say that has not been said in the past.

Box scores:

UE (80) – Lee 19, Reyes 17, Martinez 13, Zamar 9, Duran 7, Tagarda 6, Acibar 4, Noble 3, Rosopa 2, Santos 0, Hernandez 0, Casajeros 0.

DLSU (74) – Webb 14, Dela Paz, 13, Paredes 10, Andrada 7, Atkins 6, Elorde 5, Villanueva 5, Mendoza 5, Tampus 4, Marata 3, Tolentino 2, Reyes 0, Vosotros 0, Ferdinand 0.

Quarter scoring: 20-25, 40-40, 56-56, 80-74

(The Arena, San Juan)
10 a.m. JRU vs CSB-La Salle Greenhills (Jrs)
2 p.m. JRU vs St Benilde (Srs)

College of Saint Benilde won back-to-back games for the first time in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament but it almost failed to do such feat against Arellano University on Friday.

The Blazers nearly paid for a crucial mistake when the Chiefs bungled two clutch freethrows in the dying seconds to escape with a 71-69 victory at The Arena in San Juan. Holding a precarious 70-69 lead, CSB's Ian de la Paz gave up a foul on a driving Jerald Lapuz with 5.3 seconds remaining. But to the delight of a very sparse Benildean crowd, the burly Lapuz muffed both foul shots and Mark de Guzman grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 2.2 ticks left.

De Guzman, who finished with 19 points, made just one of two charities to make it a two-point lead and Arellano's Vergel Zulueta nearly gave St Benilde a shocking loss as his miracle shot from near midcourt hit the left side of the rim at the buzzer. The win enabled the squad of coach Richard del Rosario to hike their record to four wins and eight losses for solo seventh spot.

Although his team has a slim shot of making the Final Four, del Rosario, who was recently hired as one of the new assistant coaches of B-Meg Derby Ace in the PBA, has somehow thrown the white flag as far as that race is concerned. "I'm not thinking of us reaching the Final Four," del Rosario. "The important thing for us now is to get better and win more games."

It was the first time that the green-and-black clad cagers won consecutive matches since the first two games of last season. And in accomplishing such, the Blazers had to made up for an 11-point first quarter deficit to make the game a see-saw affair.

But with St Benilde leading by a slim margin, de Guzman, who helped his team climb back in the second canto, nearly cost his team a win when he shot an ill-advised trey with 17 seconds on the shot clock. Although de la Paz, who finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, was able to grab the rebound and was fouled, he failed to convert one from the 15-foot line that enabled the Chiefs to gain a final chance to win.

CSB started the streak on Monday when it beat Emilio Aguinaldo College, 83-64, behind a stellar game from rookie Luis Sinco.

Sinco, a former Ateneo Blue Eaglet, erupted for a career-high 21 points as the Blazers turned a slim halftime lead into a commanding win in the final two periods.

Prior to this, the Blazers suffered consecutive losses at the expense of perennial title contenders San Beda (89-70) and San Sebastian (62-51). San Beda (11-0) and San Sebastian (10-1) have already clinched spots in the Final Four. In third spot is Jose Rizal University (8-2) while Mapua is in fourth (7-4). Arellano and Letran are tied for fifth (4-7), EAC is in eighth (2-10) while Perpetual is dwelling at the cellar (0-10).

Box scores:

ST BENILDE 71 - de Guzman 19, de la Paz 11, Lastimosa 9, Tan 7, Nayve 7, McCoy 4, Wong 4, Argamino 4, Abolucion 3, Sinco 2, Manalac 1, Amin 0.

ARELLANO 69 - Celada 24, Ciriacruz 12, Lapuz 8, Zulueta 7, del Rosario 4, Anquilo 4, Acidre 4, Caperal 4, Palma 2.

Quarterrs: 15-26; 37-34; 56-53; 71-69.

Except for last year, the team has been in this post-elimination round phase since the format was adopted in 1994. Making it this far is already an achievement for this young team considering that they were not even expected to contend this season. Well now that they are in, they might us well take it up a notch and try to clinch a twice-to-beat advantage.

Don’t expect the also-ran UE Warriors to roll over and just give us the game without a fight. To be honest, they did quite well in the second round, scoring a couple of upset wins and nearly defeated the top team in the league. Unfortunately, it’s a case of too late the hero as the losses that piled up in the first round were just too much for them to bounce back in contention.

Here’s hoping that La Salle would continue to build on the momentum from their last two wins as we approach the homestretch of the eliminations. Finish strong guys!

The Green Archers withstood the desperate attempts of UST to come back from a 3rd quarter deficit, won the 4th quarter shootout to prevail 78-69 to snuff out the playoff ambitions of UST. With the victory of FEU over NU in the first game, the final 4 cast was sealed.

The Archers jumped to a quick 5-2 lead with 2 quick undergoal stabs by Maui and a free throw by Joshua as the Archers pounced on 3 early turnovers by UST, but after a timeout, UST stormed back to take a 10-8 lead which they maintained until the end of the first quarter. The shaky start of the Archers was evidenced in the 7 turnovers in the first 10 minutes. However, our defense stiffened and held UST scoreless for the first 5:45 of the second quarter to grab the lead for good. The second quarter saw UST score only 9 points, miss all 3point attempts, while Joel, Sam, and Simon connected from beyond the arc; the 3point makes were the margin at the half, 36-27.

The 3rd quarter was more competitive, and in fact we were outscored by 2 points, 17-19 as UST finally connected on their 3point attempts, Bautista with 2 and Teng with 1. UST capitalized on our 6 3rd quarter turnovers for 9 points and 5 offensive boards for 7 2nd chance points to narrow the gap to 53-46 after 3 quarters. Two quick baskets by Joshua and a trey by Simon gave us a 12point lead at 60-48 before Camus finally scored his first points, but Joshua, Jovet and Maui combined to give us our biggest lead at 66-50. The closest UST would get was 73-67 before Joel and Simon finished off the wounded Tigers with free throws.

What went wrong

The defense showed some cracks in allowing UST to score 23 points in the final quarter after holding them down to 46 in the first 3 quarters. True, we outscored them 25-23 in the last 10 minutes, but we can’t count on winning games by engaging in a scoring battle. The cornerstone of the Archer game is keeping the opponents’ score down, and against the defensive-minded teams of Ateneo and Adamson, allowing them to rack up the points is a risky proposition.

UST got away with some wide open 3s in the second half where they hit on 6 out of their 13 tries. Our final 4 opponents all have good perimeter shooters: FEU buried NU today with their consecutive treys, with Garcia, Cawaling, Sanga always dangerous from afar. Ateneo has their share of long range gunners in Long, Salamat, and Monfort. Adamson’s pgs are not bashful about hoisting those treys, and their bigs will often draw out the opposing frontline by shooting from the perimeter. So our perimeter defense will need some work to bring it back to up to snuff.

UST’s bigs also managed to sneak in for their share of offensive rebounds for putbacks, and even Teng was able to score inside. They has almost as many offensive boards as we did, 15-14. Also, UST was able to capitalize on defensive gaps that were created whenever one of our players would go for interceptions or steals. And UST coach Jarencio used our full court press for some “nakaw” fastbreaks. Once again, an opponent inbounding under their goal was able to get the ball to a teammate for a sneaky undergoal stab. The defense will have to be more alert to such plays.

Our turnovers were also a cause for concern. In the first half, we matched UST’s turnover tally, allowing them to stay within striking distance. When UST pressed our inbound after they scored in the last quarter, we coughed the ball up with bad passes a couple of times. We didn’t get much of an advantage with turnovers as we had as many as we forced on UST, 20, and turnover points, 21-all.

Oh, we missed a few fts as well, making only 21 out of 34 for 62%. However, our players made most of them when they needed to, 10 out of 14 in the 4th quarter to repel UST’s frantic attempts to rally.

What went right

Joshua Webb had his comeback game, tallying 14 points while playing with controlled aggression. Instead of relying on his trademark drives, he played to his strengths and moved well without the ball to get into position to receive a pass under, where he either converted or drew fouls. And with the success of our open court game, he was able to streak for fastbreak points.

Ferdinand also had a solid game, using his size to great advantage against the smaller frontline of UST and making 3 out of his 4 tries. Maui again played his usual effective game around the paint, cutting in to receive passes for easy points and tending the boards for another double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

The Simon-Yutien pick-and-roll or give-and-go plays are something to watch. Yutien excels at slicing in after giving a pick, and Simon has the ability to get him the ball in prime scoring position with laser-like accuracy. Good thing that Yutien has good handles and doesn’t lose the ball in crowded situations. And that he makes most of his fg attempts, ¾ today. Jovet was a steady presence inside, scoring on 2 clean drives inside and all 4 of his fts. We outrebounded UST 44-37.

Simon’s steadiness in the clutch is the glue that keeps the team steady during crunch time. In addition to his scoring, he is an able facilitator with his long passes to open teammates for 4 assists. Joel ably partnered with Simon, assisting on 7 of his teammates baskets.

The rookie watch

Luigi played the most at 20 minutes, scored only 1 point but was essential in helping out with the quarterbacking chores together with Joel and Simon. Almond had an off day, played only 7 minutes but still pulled down a couple of rebounds. Papot played limited minutes but managed a block. Oda had a couple of turnovers and went scoreless in 5 minutes.

The sophomores

Sam finally overcame his slump from the rainbow territory, hitting one and showing his ability to penetrate once his man overplays him or bites into a fake on the perimeter to either score on a drive or dish off to an open teammate. Yutien was again very effective inside despite having a nosebleed in the first half from an inadvertent elbow from Camus. Joel also pulled down 6 boards on top of his 7 assists.

DNPs

Gab, Nico, Martin, and Aiki

Looking forward

We’re now officially in the playoffs, and it’s just a matter of what slot we finish the eliminations at. We play UE on Saturday with barely a day’s rest. UE will play for pride and will give us no quarter, so the boys will have to play their best again. The question now will be, is it better for the Archers to play for position, or should they try to preserve the players for the playoffs and use the remaining games to work out their plays and patterns? I think they’ll go for the wins, because that’s what Archer basketball is all about.

KEEP THE FAITH!
