Episode #92 - Miranda July

The lanky 37-year-old filmmaker, author and performance artist—labeled as a quirky hipster by those charmed by her 2005 directorial debut Me and You and Everyone We Know, as well as by those who dismiss her oddball DIY sensibilities as overly twee—may prompt stronger opinions about her persona than her work. Is it because, while undeniably imaginative and frankly personal, her films always star herself? Or will some just not tolerate sudden flights of fancy, from interpretative dancing YouTube projects to anthropomorphized narrators? Ignore the jaded: July's The Future is a profoundly affecting, very funny yet far sadder piece on modern insecurities, or rather, timeless insecurities in the modern world. During this year's SXSW Film Festival, Aaron sat down with July to discuss The Future, exploring serious themes with fantastical conceits, being hyper-aware of her body shape as well as neurotic in general, and why it's not fair to use "quirk" as a pejorative.

Episode #91 - Richard Rush

How have you never heard of retired filmmaker Richard Rush? He twice directed Jack Nicholson in late '60s-era AIP films (Psych-Out, Hell's Angels on Wheels), kick started the buddy cop genre with Freebie and the Bean, won the notorious Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture with Color of Night, and was once praised by François Truffaut as his favorite American filmmaker after seeing his incredible 1980 genre-twister The Stunt Man—now on Blu-ray and an Ultimate Edition DVD from Severin Films. From his home in California, the 82-year-old Rush spoke with Aaron about how the world's merging of satire and reality ultimately inspired him to make The Stunt Man, plus more on Freebie and the Bean, the debacle surrounding the final cut on Color of Night, and why he's thanked in the credits for Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof.

Episode #90 - Janus Metz

As an intense documentary that sticks close to a platoon of soldiers in Afghanistan, Armadillo offers easy comparisons to the recent Restrepo, but filmmaker Janus Metz's shrewdly and artfully crafted examination of wartime behavior proves a grander epic with more cinematic ambitions. Aaron chatted with Metz in Brooklyn, about shooting beautiful images in the middle of a firefight, what scared him most during filming, and why it's crazy to want to "be all you can be."

Episode #89 - James Wan, Leigh Whannell (Insidious)

Perhaps lumped in with the "Splat Pack" filmmakers (Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, Alexandre Aja) for the sheer volume of gore and goring that the sequels to their self-proclaimed thriller Saw unleashed, director James Wan and writer-actor Leigh Whannell will surprise audiences with the straight-faced camp and old-school spookiness of their maniacally enjoyable new film Insidious. Aaron Hillis chatted with Wan and Whannell about the delicate balance between silly and scary, whether they're drawn more to creating or subverting, the avant-garde composer who inspired their eerie soundscapes, and whether they think Poltergeist is "a Tobe Hooper film" or "a Steven Spielberg film."

Episode #88 - SXSW '11: Vera Farmiga

Up in the Air's Vera Farmiga co-stars in Source Code (director Duncan Jones' follow-up to Moon), a twisty new techno-thriller which screened as the Opening Night film at this year's SXSW Film Festival. Sitting down together far too briefly in Austin, Farmiga and Aaron Hillis discussed her supporting role in this "spiritual story," acting with herself, which loop of time she'd like to revisit in her personal history, and directing her first feature, Higher Ground.

Episode #87 - Topher Grace

You might not expect that Topher Grace (In Good Company, Traffic, Spider-Man 3) would be quick to return to retro comedy after seven seasons on TV's That '70s Show, but lo and behold, the 32-year-old actor both executive produced and co-wrote the story for the '80s-set Take Me Home Tonight (now in theaters). At the Relativity Media offices in Manhattan, Grace chatted with Aaron Hillis to discuss how cocaine almost sunk his movie's chance for release, being forced to watch "maybe the worst film ever made" on repeat one summer, and the famous actress who babysat him during those totally tubular '80s.

Episode #86 - Xavier Dolan

Montreal-based actor and filmmaker Xavier Dolan was only 20 when his semi-autobiographical 2009 feature debut, I Killed My Mother, won three awards in the Directors' Fortnight section at Cannes. A talented whippersnapper to say the least, the not-yet-22-year-old Dolan again wrote, directed and stars in the hip romantic drama-cum-farce Heartbeats (Les Amours imaginaires), which premieres in limited release this Friday. In the downtown Manhattan lobby of the Mercer Hotel, Dolan and Aaron Hillis sat down to discuss love, style, his amazing coiffure, how he really feels about film criticism, and dubbing the voice of a South Park character for French-Canadian television.

Episode #85 - Sebastian Cordero

Born and based in Ecuador, filmmaker Sebastián Cordero was actually bitten by the cinema bug while living in France as a child, before moving to Los Angeles to attend film school at USC. His 1999 debut "Ratas, Ratones, Rateros" premiered at Venice, his 2004 follow-up "Cronicas" screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, and his new film "Rage" (natively known as Rabia) is currently playing in New York. Currently in Mexico, Cordero called Aaron to discuss his "ghost story without a ghost," the challenge of writing a story whose protagonist is unjustified in his violent outbursts, and why his proposed English-language debut Manhunt-a Lincoln assassination thriller starring Harrison Ford-never quite made it to pre-production.

Episode #84 - Michael Tully

Aaron writes: Since I consider actor, director and respected film blogger Michael Tully both a colleague and friend, I've chosen not to write a proper review of his third feature, Septien. Set in the dreamy Tennessee boonies, Tully's darkly eccentric (and if you can forgive the bias, quite remarkable) familial fable makes its world premiere simultaneously at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and nationwide on VOD via Sundance Selects (January 24). Tully invited me to his Brooklyn apartment on the night before he left for Sundance to discuss Septien's "little pot of gumbo" tone, the delicate concerns of being both a critic and a filmmaker, and whether an unearthed camcorder and the casting of Harmony Korine's wife Rachel were a combined onscreen ode to Trash Humpers.

Episode #83 - Paul Giamatti

For an actor who has been praised for playing a sad-sack wine snob (Sideways), a socially backward everyman (American Splendor), an irascible leader (HBO's John Adams), even a gloomy actor named "Paul Giamatti" (Cold Souls), Paul Giamatti would still have a diverse oeuvre if you only counted his onscreen cranks. Perhaps the most complicated of the bunch would be Giamatti's role in the new film Barney's Version, for which he has been nominated for a Golden Globe. He chats with Aaron about the hidden virtues of the quick-tempered Barney, the actor's desire for vice, naked existential fear, what attracts him to playing curmudgeonly souls, and whether Lady in the Water was misunderstood.

Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard's international resume speaks volumes about his versatility-from cinephile faves like Breaking the Waves and Insomnia to glossier American fare like Good Will Hunting and Mamma Mia!. (Ronin might fall in both camps.) His latest film, a bleakly funny comedy entitled A Somewhat Gentle Man, opens in New York on January 14. Skarsgard phoned Aaron from Sweden to briefly chat about his third collaboration with director Hans Petter Moland (after Zero Kelvin and Aberdeen), David Fincher's upcoming remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, cooking for his own family, and atheism.

Episode #81 - John Cameron Mitchell

For a filmmaker associated best with exploring gender and sexuality onscreen in such audacious, stylized films as Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus, John Cameron Mitchell seems an unlikely but inspired choice to helm David Lindsay-Abaire's pared-down adaptation of his own Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, Rabbit Hole (opening in limited release on December 17, nationwide January 14). Calling from Los Angeles, Mitchell spoke about Rabbit Hole and why making the film was a personally cathartic experience, but our brief chat also touched on his love for comic books, why LGBT-themed indies are routinely mediocre, Hedwig on Broadway, and what he wants for Christmas this year.

Episode #80 - Guillermo del Toro

Years before capturing fanboy hearts with Hellboy and Blade II (and auteurist minds with Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone), Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro first found his international audience with 1993's Cronos, released today on DVD and a gorgeous Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection. Discussing the creative path that led to making Cronos, del Toro spoke with Aaron about how all of his films combine his childhood obsessions, the painstaking design process behind the titular scarab, his giallo-influenced 1987 short Geometria, and why his only vice in life is his man-cave of an office nicknamed "Bleak House" (featured in a amazing bonus feature on this disc).

Episode #78 - Radley Metzger

81-year-old filmmaker and distributor Radley Metzger has never been an artist who chased cheap thrills. Until the sea change of the '70s, when theatrically-released erotica was rejected in favor of hardcore pornography like Deep Throat, Metzger gained international acclaim for directing sophisticated, literate and lavishly stylized erotic films like The Lickerish Quartet, Camille 2000 and Therese and Isabelle. Now Metzger's 1972 milestone Score, a film that Interview once said "hilariously hits the bull's-eye of bisexual chic," has been made available and uncut for the first on DVD from Cult Epics. Aaron Hillis chatted with Metzger over brunch.

Episode #77 - Roger Corman

Austin's Fantastic Fest honored low-budget filmmaking titan Roger Corman and wife Julie Corman with a Lifetime Achievement Award, supplemented by screenings of his 1963 directorial landmark X: The Man With X-Ray Eyes, and the couple's newly produced SyFy exclusive movie Sharktopus. For this GC podcast, the Cormans spoke about Sharktopus' point of view, how X: The Man With the X-Ray Eyes looks (har, har) many decades later, competing with major studio distributors in the post-Internet Age, and the late Dennis Hopper--another raw young talent guided by Mr. Corman once upon a time.

Episode #76 - Fantastic Fest '10: Stuart Gordon and Jeffrey Combs

It has been a quarter century since filmmaker Stuart Gordon and actor Jeffrey Combs first collaborated on the manically clever horror-comedy Re-Animator, a mad-scientist cult favorite that many believe to be the seminal film adaptation of legendary author H.P. Lovecraft's work. Together, Gordon and Combs share an eccentric oeuvre of grim and gory curiosities, such as From Beyond (which, in addition to Re-Animator, was screened at Fantastic Fest 2010), Fortress, Castle Freak, and The Black Cat. Most recently, the two have returned to their stage roots with Nevermore, a funny-sad, one-man play with Combs reprising his Poe before a live audience. Aaron sat down with Gordon and Combs in Austin to discuss their tag team's origin story, the trick to adapting Lovecraft's thorny tales, peculiar reactions audiences have had to Nevermore, and how a Re-Animator joke I made with Gordon two years ago has since become a reality.

Episode #75 - Fantastic Fest '10: Let Me In (Matt Reeves, Kodi Smit-McPhee)

It wasn't that Cloverfield filmmaker Matt Reeves had such a burning desire to adapt the same John Ajvide Lindqvist novel that became Sweden's 2008 poignant horror sensation Let the Right One In, but with English-language remake rights already in play, the chance to make a unique story his own was an intriguing proposition. To his credit, for a remake that audiences never asked for, Reeves' Let Me In (starring The Road's Kodi Smit-McPhee) is a surprisingly solid cover tune that is every bit as eerie, tender and bloody as the original film. Aaron Hillis chats with Reeves and young Smit-McPhee about their vampire film.

Episode #74 - Gaspar Noe

When you hear incendiary French auteur Gaspar Noe say things like, "To make a good melodrama you need sperm, blood and tears," one has to wonder if he actually hates his audience, or merely likes pushing the boundaries of their collective comfort zone. Noe's latest is Enter the Void, which Aaron Hillis in the Village Voice called a "deliriously wicked, undeniably daring acid trip through Tokyo's neon-splattered underworld." Aaron spoke with Noe on the film, his bad drug trips and why the longer "director's cut" is not.

Episode #73 - Vincent Cassel

As if there needed to be physical proof that he's one of France's most versatile actors today, Vincent Cassel (La Haine, Irreversible, Eastern Promises) won a Cesar for playing the titular role in director--and fellow Cesar winner-Jean-Francois Richet's two-part underworld epic Mesrine. Aaron met up with Cassel to discuss why making the film was an endurance contest to be conquered, the most Bonnie & Clyde-like moment he's ever had with his real-life wife Monica Bellucci, and which filmmaker he believes is "the closest we have to a modern Bunuel."

Episode #72 - Terry Zwigoff

Just because filmmaker Terry Zwigoff has collaborated with graphic novelist Daniel Clowes twice (Ghost World, Art School Confidential) and is best known for his eccentric and tragicomic doc portrait of an underground artist (Crumb), he doesn't want you to think his entire career is ink and panels. This week, the Criterion Collection has released a special edition DVD and Blu-ray of Crumb, and even more excitingly, they've given their canonizing treatment to Zwigoff's amazing 1985 feature debut, Louie Bluie. In honor of Criterion's must-see new discs, Aaron Hillis called Zwigoff in San Francisco for a new podcast.

Episode #71 - Todd Solondz

Aaron Hillis says: Think of this as an addendum to our podcast recorded during last year's New York Film Festival, in which Armond White, Andrew Grant and myself (along with party crasher Sylvia Miles) debated Welcome to the Dollhouse and Palindromes auteur Todd Solondz's newly released Life During Wartime. I met up recently with Solondz at the SoHo Grand Hotel Lounge to discuss his thoughts on forgiveness, The Wire, the political undertones of his new film, being accused of misanthropy, and whether (as I once heard him say in 2002) he still disliked filmmaking as the medium for telling his stories.

Episode #70 - Nicolas Winding Refn (Valhalla Rising)

The latest from Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, The Pusher Trilogy) is the austere and brutal 12th-century epic Valhalla Rising, what Aaron Hillis elsewhere called "a trippy nightmare of savage poetry burning slow across bleak and otherworldly landscapes." These ain't your daddy's Vikings. Aaron chatted with Refn to discuss his "hallucinogenic drug" Valhalla Rising, how he made both this film and last year's Bronson simultaneously, and why Mads Mikkelsen never gets invited to his birthday parties.

Episode #69 - Winnebago Man (Ben Steinbauer and Jack Rebney)

It might seem counterintuitive to craft a feature-length documentary around a viral clip concerning one man's explicit outtakes during a 1989 industrial video production, but Winnebago Man director, producer and cowriter Ben Steinbauer has truly made an entertaining portrait with a complicated range of emotions. Aaron Hillis was in New York for the film's premiere and chatted with with Steinbauer about the film's themes, what can happen to analog recordings in the digital age, and who will play his subject in the inevitable Hollywood remake. As a bonus, the Winnebago Man team invited him to have a post-screening chat with the man himself, Jack Rebney. It seemed timely to discuss Mel Gibson's recorded outbursts before allowing him his soapbox to address all you [bleep]s directly.

Aaron Hillis introduces the podcast: "Although neither New York-based journalist Sebastian Junger nor Liverpool-born photographer Tim Hetherington are strangers to combat zones, feature filmmaking was indeed a new war to be fought. In their brave and riveting documentary debut Restrepo, which won the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance, the two seasoned professionals used their fact-finding instincts to depict an experience I had never before felt with such heart-in-my-throat immediacy." Aaron sat down with Junger and Hetherington to discuss the risk and reward in making Restrepo, politics versus morality, why they should be seen as journalists instead of activist filmmakers, and how - in justifiable comparison to their doc - The Hurt Locker isn't quite a fair portrayal of the soldier's experience.

Aaron Hillis introduces the podcast: "Having now seen Dogtooth three times, which I not-so-hyperbolically called 'the most original, challenging, and perverse film of the year so far' in the Village Voice, I was thrilled to speak with Greek filmmaker Georgios Lanthimos (Kinetta) about his must-see second feature. Having done a full year's round of press since the film won the Prix Un Certain Regard at Cannes '09, Lanthimos was gracious enough to spare a few more minutes before leaving his New York hotel and returning home to Greece. We discussed his initial story concept, Dogtooth's ambiguous take on American pop culture, the non-existent props audiences have projected into his film, and feeling isolated himself."

Episode #65 - Pauly Shore

It's been two decades since comedian Pauly Shore first turned up on the beach to host MTV's Spring Break parties, and whether you're tickled or annoyed by his goofy antics from Encino Man and Bio-Dome, his character "The Weasel" has, fittingly, weaseled its way into pop culture history. Personally, I gained respect for the guy once he became a filmmaker with his ballsy, scathingly self-critical debut Pauly Shore Is Dead, so I couldn't pass up the chance to talk to Shore, again in the director's chair for the new mockumentary Adopted, coming to DVD on Jun 15.

Episode #64 - Vincenzo Natali (SPLICE)

Even after toying with genre in films like Cypher and Paris, Je T'Aime, Canadian auteur Vincenzo Natali is still best known for his 1997 feature debut, the futuristic Kafkaesque horror Cube. However, expect his fanbase to soon grow as rapidly as the out-of-control genetic experiment in his new film Splice, which Warner Bros. picked up after its Sundance premiere. Natali spoke with Aaron Hillis about creature design, scientific responsibility, whether he takes the Cube sequels as flattery or forgery, and how adapting J.G. Ballard and William Gibson might make him a masochist.

Episode #63 - Jesse Eisenberg

Jesse Eisenberg, star of Adventureland and The Squid and the Whale, stars in Kevin Asch's film Holy Rollers, which opened in select theaters this weekend. Holy Rollers is inspired by actual events in the late nineties when Hasidic Jews were recruited as mules to smuggle ecstasy from Europe into the United States. Aaron Hillis talked with Eisenberg about the illusion of 'based on a true story,' acting with his sister onscreen, his busy month ahead (Don't miss The Living Wake!), and the Zombieland sequel that's in the works.

From child actor to cinematographer to first-time feature filmmaker, Michael Paul Stephenson reflects back on a now notoriously awful (read: jaw-droppingly enjoyable) movie he starred in as a kid in his entertaining and offfbeat new doc, Best Worst Movie. Aaron spoke with Stephenson about his personal take on the 20-year incubation of Troll 2's fandom, the power of the collective audience, the cult of anti-celebrity, and parlaying a terrible stain on one's resume into something positive.

Episode #61 - Tribeca '10: Joey Arias, Basil Twist and Bobby Sheehan

Photographer-turned-filmmaker Bobby Sheehan began his career documenting the late 70s NYC punk scene, which was around the time that he befriended cabaret singer and drag artist Joey Arias (also memorably seen in Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and Wigstock: the Movie). However, it wasn't until Arias found and shared his biggest success with puppeteer extraordinaire Basil Twist, their wild 2008 stage collaboration "Arias with a Twist", that Sheehan decided to turn his camera on the both of them in Arias with a Twist: The Docufantasy, which plays at this year's Tribeca Film Fest.

This week, the Criterion Collection releases Letters From Fontainhas: Three Films by Pedro Costa, a rigorous, stunning and internationally acclaimed trilogy spanning 1997 through 2006. One of the most important artists on the international film scene today, Portuguese director Costa has been steadily building an impressive body of work since the late eighties. From Lisbon, Costa spoke with Aaron Hillis about gaining the "strange password, or key to open" the films in this lost-souls trilogy, choosing to lose time as a filmmaker, the peculiarities of screenwriting in a Portuguese creole, and more.

Having its world premiere at SXSW, Serbian Film (a/k/a Srpski Film)--quite easily the sickest, most depraved film I've ever had the pleasure--screenwriter Aleksandar Radivojevic (the only member of the filmmaking team who spoke English well) sat down with me to talk about their "allegory," why it's more like a Caravaggio painting than an exploitation flick, the bizarre tale of trying to get their print developed, and the most ferocious film he's ever seen.

Superbad and Knocked Up star Jonah Hill has primarily been known for stealing laughs, but in the charming new dramedy Cyrus--making a regional premiere at SXSW--Hill shows surprising depth in an idiosyncratic role that allows him room to stretch. On a day too gorgeous to be sitting inside the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Hill and I discussed Cyrus, why outsiders might perceive his own family dynamic as strange, the L.A. Lakers movie he would love to direct, and whether he would join me for a taco.

Just released on DVD and Blu-Ray this week, courtesy of the Criterion Collection, is Gotz Spielmann's riveting neo-noir "Revanche", which was Oscar-nominated last year for Best Foreign Language Film. Sometime last May, Aaron sat down with Spielmann to talk about "the first Buddhist thriller" (as he recalls an L.A. critic describing it), the role nature plays in his life, why he doesn't believe in loneliness, and who he deems the most underrated filmmaker in history. Because natural sound is so important to the artistry of Revanche, we conducted our podcast outside on the crowded Manhattan streets, for better or worse.

Beginning in 1969 and for the next three decades or so, Brooklyn-born artist and animator Al Jarnow created over 100 short films that have been seen by tens of millions of people worldwide... chances are you know his work, even if you didn't know his name. The Numero Group will release "Celestial Navigations" - an impressively packaged, deluxe DVD of his films, transferred and remastered from the original 16mm prints. In today's podcast, Jarnow talks about "digital films made by hand," new perceptions he's had about his work in the YouTube era, why he no longer considers himself a filmmaker, and the baffling reason why an animated yak was once rejected from Sesame Street.

From radio to television and now feature films, Chris Morris has amassed an impressive body of work in the UK as a trenchant writer, director, actor and prankster. Premiering at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, his directorial feature debut "Four Lions", about a group of British jihadists who push their abstract dreams of glory to the breaking point, has been brewing some oh-no-you-didn't controversy. In his 1 of 2 interviews from Sundance, Aaron sits with Morris to discuss his brilliant new film, the real-life absurdities he discovered in his research, his 2007 lashing-out at novelist Martin Amis on the topic of Muslims, and the most trouble he's ever gotten into for a joke.

Dax Shepard (Idiocracy, Employee of the Month) co-stars. A few days before "The Freebie's" world premiere, Aaron spoke with Aselton and Shepard about their collaboration, being too candid among friends, whether Aselton is concerned with the film's passing resemblance to Humpday, and if Shepard recognizes how miserably prescient Idiocracy seems with each passing year.

Episode #53 - Chantal Akerman (Criterion's Chantal Akerman in the Seventies)

"Comparable in force and originality to Godard or Fassbinder," began the Village Voice's J. Hoberman about the hypnotic hyperrealism of a certain Belgian auteur, "Chantal Akerman is arguably the most important European director of her generation." On Jan 19, Criterion will release an inarguably vital Eclipse box set entitled Chantal Akerman in the Seventies, which will include "The New York Films" (La Chambre, Hotel Monterey and News From Home), her feature debut Je tu il Elle, and Aaron's personal favorite of the set, Les rendez-vous d'Anna. During a brief visit to New York in December, Akerman and Aaron sat down to discuss these early films, with the stipulation that their conversation would not be edited to remove uh's, hiccups, burps and spaces since according to Akerman, "the spaces are the best part!" They discuss the '70s avant-garde filmmakers who inspired her during her New York residency, the strangest job she had in the "phallic city," being Andrew Bujalski's thesis advisor at Harvard, and why she now takes back a title she once rejected.

Episode #52 - Terry Gilliam (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus)

Terry Gilliam is most widely recognized today as the mischievous auteur behind such hallucinatory, darkly comic fantasies as Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and 12 Monkeys. His latest flight of surreal whimsy is The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, credited with love as "a film from Heath Ledger and friends" since star Ledger unforeseeably died during its production. Sitting down with Gilliam in New York, Aaron promised to talk sparingly about Ledger's death ("Good," Gilliam joked, "He's boring anyway.") so that they'd have more time to discuss the devilishly entertaining Tom Waits, why working with his producer was "child abuse," the lost projects he's most frustrated about, and all he really wants for Christmas.

Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske together form Broken Lizard, the irreverent comedy troupe behind such films as "Super Troopers", "Club Dread" and "Beerfest". In their new film and Heffernan's directorial debut, "The Slammin' Salmon", the Lizards are teamed with Oscar nominee Michael Clarke Duncan; they play the servers at his restaurant where he rules with fear and enforces a contest: the top selling server wins $10,000 while the waiter in last place gets served with a broken rib sandwich. Sitting down with all five Lizards at City Crab, a Manhattan seafood restaurant where Steve Lemme once worked, the boys rowdily discuss their illicit experiences in food service, what always makes for sure-fire comic material, their favorite films of 2009, and the worst part about working with Michael Clarke Duncan - who then turns up in a cameo appearance to keep the boys in check.

Aaron calls the the film "as richly compelling and artfully shot as rock docs get" - listen in as the filmmaking duo Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell discuss how they embedded themselves in this volatile subculture, their theories on how showmanship spiraled into criminal activity, whether Aites' background as frontman of the band Iran made him hypersensitive to a story about musicians, and how they manage to get along as both a couple and artistic collaborators.

Episode #49 - John Hillcoat (The Road)

No stranger to mining lyricism from bleak landscapes, "The Proposition" director John Hillcoat has poignantly visualized the burnt-out, grey wasteland of "The Road" - the 2006 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Cormac McCarthy, author of No Country for Old Men. In this podcast, Hillcoat and Aaron discus the real-life father and son who appear in "The Road", how the hell he distilled Cormac McCarthy in under two hours (his original cut ran four-and-a-half hours), and what most people don't know his long-time collaborator Nick Cave does two or three times a day. Warning: minor book spoiler at 8:05 into the podcast! Fast forward to 10 minutes to pick up after the minor spoiler leaves off.

If you know actor Michael Shannon by name, chances are it's because of his searing, Oscar-nominated performance as head-case John Givings in last year's "Revolutionary Road". Yet the Kentucky-born Brooklynite has brought his towering presence and curious intensity to dozens of projects, most notably "Bug", "World Trade Center", "Shotgun Stories", and Werner Herzog's upcoming "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done." Sitting down with Shannon to discuss "The Missing Person", their conversation segued to the first time music made him cry, a certain auteur's fake food, and the delights of being in Kangaroo Jack.

Go for it, losers." Aaron and Herzog dive right into the experience of coming into the project, the importance of self-irony, and teaching Nicolas Cage Klaus Kinski acting methods.

Most will recognize Tom Noonan as the tall, reserved but eerily intense gentleman and memorable character actor from films as diverse as "Manhunter", "Mystery Train", and "Synecdoche New York". His latest chance to effortlessly steal scenes arrives in Ti West's wonderfully slow-burning, retro-horror flick, "The House of the Devil". In this podcast, Noonan and Aaron spoke about his dramatic workshops, being naturally creepy, why he never reads the whole script, and anecdotal remembrances of working with John Cassavetes, Michael Mann, and Michael Cimino - "just a terrible human being."

NYFF mainstay Sylvia Miles crashes the conversation to talk about the film and her upcoming role reprisal in Oliver Stone's "Wall Street" sequel.

Time Out New York senior film writer Joshua Rothkopf doesn't have quite as much love for QT's Nazi-licious new epic as Aaron does, which is why they met up for a "pubcast" at Brooklyn's Jakewalk bar. Has Quentin Tarantino matured as a filmmaker, or does his talky WWII actioner Inglourious Basterds prove yet another indulgent film pastiche? Is its Jewish revenge plot cathartic, or merely insensitive? Or can we chalk its sadism up to a writer's irreverence, and ignore its political incorrectness entirely? It's just a movie, right?

Aaron meets with McQuaid and Fessenden at Swift, an East Village pub that held a nostalgic place in Fessenden's heart, liver and oeuvre. The three chatted about the unexpected Grammy winner who co-stars in their film, why horror movies should be about working people, and Irish breakdancing gangs.

Episode #33 - Peter Capaldi (In the Loop)

Peter Capaldi isn't a widely recognizeable name in the U.S. (yet), though the silver-tongued Scottish actor has starred in such beloved films as Local Hero, Dangerous Liaisons and The Lair of the White Worm. He also, much to the confusion of people who identify him as a thespian, won an Oscar for a nifty 1994 short film he wrote and directed (Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life), but it's his insult-tossing, handily scene-stealing performance in In the Loop with which people will soon associate him. Calling Capaldi in the UK, Aaron is certainly to blame for giving him the green flag to use creative obscenities, but he's proud that it dug up "Tucker's Law," a dirty joke that went too far and had to be cut.

Episode #32 - Lynn Shelton, Mark Duplass, Joshua Leonard (Humpday)

If Seattle-based filmmaker Lynn Shelton had an actual career hump to get over, she has most certainly done so on the strength of her third feature, the hilariously perceptive Humpday. Since its premiere at this year's Sundance, the officially too-often-cited "mumblecore bromance" was picked up by Magnolia Pictures after a six-company bidding war, played a handful of renowned fests including SXSW and Cannes, and in the interim, had its buzz cranked a few more decibels when Shelton won the 2009 "Someone to Watch" Spirit Award for last year's My Effortless Brilliance. Aaron chatted with Shelton and lead actors Mark Duplass and Joshua Leonard, at the Magnolia offices -- though Shelton wound up laughing herself literally under the conference room table, courtesy of her co-stars' irreverent banter.

Aaron Hillis, introducing a new podcast on GreenCine Daily: "As Andrew Grant, David Fear and I discussed in our podcast last Oct, Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larra's Tony Manero was my favorite feature at the 2008 New York Film Festival, a marvelously unhinged study of pop-culture obsession in a suffocating environment (if I may crib myself)." Aaron talks with Larrain about fascism, disco, the Chilean filmmaking scene, and why he agrees with one of his naysayers.

Episode #29 - Rutger Hauer

Internationally renowned Dutch actor and filmmaker Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, The Hitcher) again lends his name and talents to the third edition of the Rutger Hauer FilmFactory (Jun 18 28), a Rotterdam-based workshop program that unites 30 budding auteurs for masters classes with such notables as Paul Verhoeven and Robert Rodriguez. (Both of whom will be teaching virtually via Skype.) Aaron spoke with Hauer who called from his hotel in the Netherlands to discuss this year's edition of the FilmFactory, why he hasn't collaborated with Verhoeven since 1985's Flesh + Blood, and the experience of doing love scenes for Nicolas Roeg with the director's then-wife Theresa Russell. If you notice that Hauer's voice begins to sound a little glitchy near the end, keep listening for the ironic explanation.

Aaron Hillis introduces this one: Currently working overtime on Broadway in 9 to 5: The Musical, Emmy Award winner and Tony nominee Allison Janney (Juno, TV's The West Wing) can also now be seen in Away We Go. Co-written by married novelists Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, it's the first feature from director Sam Mendes that I've liked, perhaps because it's so warm and engaging that it doesn't seem like a Sam Mendes film. Janney was even lovelier in person than I imagined as we sat down to discuss my home state of Arizona, why she appreciates political doublespeak, the reason she thinks she'd be an awful mother, and the illicit on-set behavior of Sam Mendes (don't sue me, Sam Mendes!).

V. Club. D'Angelo and Aaron Hillis discussed the unusual way he funded his 12-day expedition, why he feels Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon was a lousy choice to win the Palme d'Or, the significance of Twitter in film journalism today, and why he never seems to like any of the movies he sees (or so you think).

Shot similarly to Bubble, Soderbergh's other low-budget digital drama featuring a cast of non-professional actors and utilizing "structured improv" (as the director called it in my interview with him), The Girlfriend Experience has made bigger news for the professional ringer who shoulders its story, 21-year-old porn star Sasha Grey in her first non-XXX role. Aaron Hillis chatted with film critic Glenn Kenny ("a good friend, neighbor and colleague (for that matter, the guy who gave me my start in film journalism, damn him") to jabber about his villainous supporting role in the film as "The Erotic Connoisseur."

The World Cinema Foundation (a/k/a WCF, founded and chaired by American auteur and all-around goodfella Martin Scorsese) has partnered with indie-film buzzmakers B-Side Entertainment, online cinematheque The Auteurs, and the DVD heroes at Criterion. Dedicated to film restoration and preservation, Scorsese's foundation, whose advisory board includes Wong Kar Wai, Abbas Kiarostami and Guillermo Del Toro, has just unveiled three new projects for 2009: Edward Yang's A Brighter Summer Day (Taiwan, 1991), Shadi Abdel Salam's Al-Momia (Egypt, 1969), and Fred Zinnemann and Emilio Gomez Muriel's Redes (Mexico, 1936). Under the new partnership, many more eyes will hopefully get to take in the fruits of WCF's efforts. Aaron spoke with Scorsese, and WCF executive director Kent Jones, on the phone from France.

"Julia" is shouldered as much by Zonca's instinctual filmmaking as it does on Tilda Swinton's intense, knock-out performance.
Episode #19 - Sleep Dealer (Alex Rivera, Leonor Varela)

The debut feature from co-writer/director Alex Rivera, "Sleep Dealer", may be the first sci-fi film set in a third-world locale: Mexico. Sitting down before its U.S. theatrical release, Rivera, co-star Leonor Varela and Aaron jacked into a conversation about what the film's really about, the evils as well as the benefits of globalization, and how to find the balance between subtlety and ideological preaching in a sci-fi allegory.

Film in Focus editor Nick Dawson didn't just help re-discover the remastered director's cut of Hal Ashby's "Looking To Get Out" (1982), he literally wrote the book on Ashby: The Sarasota Film Festival retrospective was conceived in conjunction with the launch of Dawson's wonderful new biography Being Hal Ashby: Life of a Hollywood Rebel. Though Dawson couldn't talk too much about the ongoing familial disputes he had come across in his six years of scrupulous research, he did reveal juicy anecdotes about Ashby's teeth, the films he never completed, and his own personal (if unusual) faves from the auteur's undervalued filmography.

From Half Nelson writer-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden comes "Sugar", which follows the story of Miguel Santos, a.k.a. Sugar, a Dominican pitcher from San Pedro De Macors, struggling to make it to the big leagues and pull himself and his family out of poverty. Aaron speaks with the duo about that issue of non-professional actors, what they learned about the real-life exploitation of minor-league baseball players, and why they, as a couple, don't bicker when they collaborate.

Actor and martial artist Michael Jai White (Spawn, The Dark Knight, HBO's Tyson) is the co-writer and eponymous superfly star of Black Dynamite -- a pitch-perfect, two-fisted and two-footed throwback to '70s blaxploitation, directed by Scott Sanders. Aaron sits down with him to talk about his "period piece," the blaxploitation film he thinks would be nominated for an Oscar if it were re-released today, and why he would be thrilled to perform in a third Toxic Avenger movie.

Writer/director Ry-Russo Young (Orphans, Marion) and co-writer/star Stella Schnabel are the creative force behind "You Wont Miss Me", a kaleidoscopic film portrait of Shelly Brown, premiering in the New Frontier Features section at 2009's Sundance Film Festival. In Schnabel's first-ever interview about her first-ever screen role, she and Russo-Young and Aaron discuss their collaborative improvisation, the pros and cons of having a famous dad in the biz, the terror of love, and the film itself.

Episode #2 - Made in U.S.A.(Armond White)

In honor of the US premiere of Jean-Luc Godard's "Made in U.S.A", Aaron Hillis chats with New York Press critic Armond White about about why this lesser-known work should make an impact. Screened once at the 1967 New York Film Festival and never shown on TV, video or DVD, Godard's conspiratorial Pop Art quasi-adaption of the late Donald Westlake's potboiler "The Jugger" (and his last film ever with ex-wife and long-time muse Anna Karina) will be presented in a dazzling new 35mm print for its official U.S. premiere at NYC's Film Forum (Jan 9 - 22).

In this episode Aaron Hillis sits down with Time Out New York critics David Fear and Joshua Rothkopf, plus The House Next Door founder-turned-filmmaker Matt Zoller Seitz. Standing outside the Brooklyn Inn, the subject of their tipsy "pubcast" was the future of film criticism; specifically, what we all would like to see and do to elevate and spread it in 2009.
