I took one thing at a time.

Today, I’m sharing 5 sneaky sources of toxins and some simple swaps we’ve made in our own home that you can try too!

1. Drinking Water

What to do: Start filtering your water with a high-quality system. I break it down in this water guide! (I love Boroux the most! Use code ACM at checkout for a discount)

2. Mattress Off-Gassing

Hidden toxins: Flame retardants, formaldehyde, VOCs
What to do: Go organic when possible! Here’s what we decided on 16 years ago after hours of comparison research! My Savvy Rest mattress is HEAVENLY. It comes in customizable layers and has a 20 YEAR warranty! That is amazing and unlike any other mattress. Check in seasonally as they run their 20% off every few months. Also look into just getting one of their organic mattress toppers and wool pillows if a full mattress isn’t in the budget, although I think it’s a wise purchase that you can spread out over the course of several years. You spend ⅓ of your day on your mattress!

3. Scented Candles & Air Fresheners

Hidden toxins: Phthalates, artificial fragrance, benzene
What to do: Opt for essential oil diffusers or essential oil beeswax candles. You’ll still get the cozy vibe – without the toxic load.

4. Plastic Food Storage

Hidden toxins: BPA, BPS, microplastics (especially when heated)
What to do: Swap for glass or stainless steel. We slowly built our collection over time by watching for sales and secondhand finds, but these are a great set to start with and also are large enough for my anti-cancer salad.

5. Cleaning Products

Hidden toxins: Ammonia, bleach, sulfates, synthetic fragrances
What to do: I use Norwex cleaning cloths and sometimes a water/vinegar mix for cleaning my home! For laundry I use Truly Free laundry! This is a non-toxic laundry detergent that smells AMAZING and cleans great! You also mix the detergent at home in reusable jugs, saving SO MUCH plastic!)

Final Thoughts:

You don’t have to be perfect. Just pick one area to start. One small swap can mean less exposure and more peace of mind for your family.

Let me know if one of these stood out in the comments!

Each time I have a baby I go through a season of worrying I have cancer again. Months of sleep deprivation, limited time to prepare healthy food, and kid-overload can make your body feel like something is really wrong. But I forget the power that I really have to prevent!

Cancer free now since 2008 after choosing a completely holistic approach, I can’t afford to abandon my anti-cancer diet and lifestyle, even if a new baby makes it super difficult.

So remembering some of these 5 easy strategies to stay cancer confident has me feeling more empowered about being perfectly fine!

Originally published: 10/1/2015, Updated 7/23/2025

Every now and then I experience a weird ache or a change in my body that gets me worrying a bit if something *MORE* could be going on. I guess it’s the life of a cancer survivor. Anyone else? This is how I have dealt with the “worry” about recurrence over the years…

If you’ve ever found yourself spiraling into worry, wondering if every ache or strange symptom means something more serious – you’re not alone. I’ve been there, and I want to help pull you out of that fear loop. Here are five practical, empowering ways to calm your mind and take action today.

1. Eat to protect, not panic. Load up on anti-cancer powerhouses like leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, berries, garlic, and turmeric. Juicing is a simple way to flood your body with nutrients—my go-to juicer is the Breville Juice Fountain Elite, which cleans up in about 3 minutes and costs under $300! I have had mine for 16 years, so its a beast!

My favorite way to juice is very practical. I juice 9 carrots, 9 celery sticks, a cucumber, and a zucchini first. Then, I add the “sweet stuff” – a small peeled beet, a pineapple core, and an apple or pear (or both). A ½ lemon with rind and a knob of ginger add amazing anti-cancer properties. This give me about 32-40 ounces of juice or so. Store this an a 40 ounce stainless steel canteen and add ice. Sip on it over the course of a few hours at about 8 ounces an hour.

2. Detox your beauty and hygiene products. Many people don’t realize how much they’re exposed to through everyday products. Start small. My favorite swap? Laundry detergent. I’ve used Truly Free for years—no toxic chemicals, just clean, safe ingredients that won’t burden your immune system. A cleaner home means less toxic buildup in your body. Also check out my A-Z Natural Healing Handbook with over 100 natural remedies and product swaps to get you on your way!

3. Soothe the stress. Chronic worry and fear can weaken your immune system and affect your overall health. Start a simple daily ritual: prayer, walks outside in the sunshine (added benefits!), deep breathing, journaling, Scripture reading, or a gratitude list. Mental peace is not just emotional-it’s physical. You don’t have to carry this fear alone. It’s all about finding joy and FLOW in your life! I also want to add that HealingStrong groups are THE BEST way to build community and ease worry through fellowship on your anti-cancer journey! We have HUNDREDS of natural healing support groups – both in person and online!

4. Use smart, affordable screening tools. Data brings peace. Get the information! Consider basic blood work like Vitamin D, high-sensitivity CRP (for inflammation), and LDH (a cellular turnover marker). Thermography offers non-invasive imaging for inflammation and abnormal patterns. Just use it is a TRENDING tool over time. For a broader overview, some people opt for the Galleri test—a multi-cancer early detection blood test you can ask your doctor about (learn more here). (I have no experience with this test, but people are talking about it – so do your own research!)

If you’re looking for the most comprehensive cellular-level screening, the RGCC test (also called the Greece test) analyzes circulating tumor cells and cancer stem cells, and shows how your body responds to natural and conventional therapies. It’s more expensive, but can be a powerful tool – especially if you have a strong family history or past cancer diagnosis.

5. Learn what really works. My newest book is packed with everything I wish I’d known sooner: the exact cancer healing protocol I used, plus over 100 natural remedies for everything from anxiety to headaches to immune support. It’s a guide for anyone who wants to take their health into their own hands—without fear leading the way. Use code FRIENDS5 for $5 off of the digital e-book! You can also bundle it with my Anti-Cancer Lifestyle Guide!

I’m here cheering you on every step of the way.

I was actually pregnant with our youngest daughter (and 6th baby) at the time of the interview and had TERRIBLE morning sickness. Life is so busy, I ignored my blog here! Oh, and despite what the title says, I was actually almost at my 13th year of remission when this was filmed. As I’m typing this, it has been 16 years.

As most of you know, I am busiest on social media, especially Instagram and Facebook, so you can chat with me there!

I’m writing this post on a four hour Amtrak train ride from Boston to New York, wrapping up a nine day trip with my husband. Travel strategy is fresh in my head, and since it’s been a few months since my last post, I wanted to catch up with everyone here!

(Links updated, 2024. Originally written in 2017)

Today I’m sharing a bit of what worked and what didn’t along our travels these last seven days. To make this trip happen, we DROVE from our home in Atlanta in our minivan to South Florida, dropped our three kids off with my parents there and took a PLANE to New York. Then we took the AMTRAK train to Boston and then back to New York where we will catch a PLANE back to South Florida and will drive back home to Atlanta.

Phew. And YES we are very grateful for my parents wanting to binge watch their grandchildren.

PERFECT isn’t a thing….especially on vacation.

I am proud to say that we are not PERFECT people. I ate steak once on this trip. And had a bit of ice cream. And on the Amtrak I ate a microwaved sandwich. Oh Lordy Be I was starving. I even joked to my husband…”you know <insert any health blogger here> would say that they just FAST if there’s nothing healthy to eat”….as I bit into my rubbery sandwich. <sigh>

These are obviously not everyday healthy choices and definitely not anti-cancer. But it has been 9 years since my cancer diagnosis and more than 8 years since remission. It’s nice at this point to occasionally have a treat that I enjoy and loosen the obsessiveness and intensity this lifestyle can create.

I still struggle with guilt sometimes about eating food I typically don’t eat (especially sugar when I rarely do,) but I’ve learned over the years that if I choose to do it, I’m going to let it go and enjoy the moment.

I’ve also learned that I don’t eat a lot of it. With sugar in particular too much of it makes me feels sick. Even if I order the kid-sized portions I usually don’t even finish that.

It’s nice to open up a bit to you all today. Sometimes it is easier to keep the stuff I eat that I’m not so proud of to myself, but I’m a real person and “Mom!” to three kids. It’s nice to RELAX the rules and rigidity sometimes.

10 Healthy Living Hacks For Traveling

#1 Bring a Variety of BARS

Pre-packaged and sealed food can be brought on planes. We stocked up on packaged food bars that would last our entire trip. These can serve as a quick breakfast or a snack so you’re not tempted with easy picking snacks. Bring a variety so you don’t get sick of them. ALOHA bars have a variety pack you can bring along and are organic, non-GMO, lower in sugar or under, and have a good amount of protein.

#2 Bring Along a Portable Water Filter

For water we each bought a large bottled water (usually FIJI if I can find it) once I get through airport security. We used this same bottle to refill throughout our trip using my favorite water filter (edited: my favorite portable water filter is no longer sold, but this one is similar) that I bring along with us. For how much I would love to drink from glass, I didn’t want to risk breaking them in out travels and no stainless steel because I wanted a disposable container. Each morning before we adventured out we refilled both our large FIJI bottles and put them in our backpack. If you really want to go hard care and drink water from rain collectors, rivers, or lakes, you need to check out the LifeStraw straw! You could drink straight from the cups at a restaurant as long as you don’t mind looking a little strange.

#3 Bring Your Non-Toxic Bathroom Along With You

We typically never check baggage to avoid losing bags and paying extra fees, so all of our things had to meet carry-on regulations. All of my non-toxic makeup could be brought on the plane without a problem. All lotions, conditioners, shampoos, shave cream, etc. was fine to bring on as long as they were under 3 ounces. The travel section at Target had 3 ounce EVOS non-toxic shave cream and 3 ounce Dr. Bronner’s soap. My shampoo and conditioner fit in travel sized clear containers along with my facial cleansing oil and homemade deodorant.

#4 Clean Hands Yes Please

Dr. Bronners has an awesome spray hand sanitizer that is free of triclosan and other yucky chemicals and is also under 3 ounces so you can pack it with you.

Norwex body and face cloths are PERFECT for bringing along to wipe kids up or dirty hands when you can’t get to a bathroom before eating. They mechanically remove bacteria and dirt, up to 99.9%! Their mini-envirocloths and travel wet bag set are great for wiping up tables and surfaces.

#5 Non-Toxic Sunscreen

For sunscreen, you usually need more than 3 ounces on a long trip, so I have found that most CVS, Duane Reed, and Walgreen stores we visited had ALBA brand Very Sensitive sunscreen which is a 2 or 3 (out of 10 with 10 being the most toxic) on the EWG scale. This is a much better option and readily available than other conventional sunscreens (and it works well when reapplied every 2 hours or so.) If you need a lower score and can afford the price tag, Sun2Sea is a 0/10 in toxicity, EWG approved, reef safe and $27 for 2.5 ounces.

#6 Eat Without Guilt

Rather than focusing on what you SHOULDN’T eat, focus on what you can and how you’ll feel afterwards- both physically and emotionally. Thinking about how I am going to feel AFTER my meal helps me see through the emotional cravings. If I eat a salad with a side dish of green beans and sweet potato, I am going to feel a lot better than if I choose to eat a pizza (even if it’s loaded with veggies.) Let yourself have one fun meal a day or every other day. Sometimes setting “rules” for myself in this way helps me with letting go of any guilt. (Disclaimer: Obviously if you’re adhering to a cancer healing diet at this point you would want to stay the course and avoid all foods that are not allowed on your particular diet.)

#7 Smoothies Are Your Friend

Look for smoothie and juice places. These were EVERYWHERE in New York and Boston. On the sides of the road or in walk-in stores. A quick Google search is your best friend. My husband and I settled into a pattern of a nutrition bar for breakfast, smoothie for lunch, and then sit-down dinner. Also- ask them to throw in greens to your smoothie. Many of the side street smoothie places in New York did this for free for me.

#8 Stay at an AirBnB

If you book at an AirBnB or VRBO locations you may have access to a blender in the apartment or home. I bet you could even ask about a juicer! We booked three different AirBnB locations for a our trip and asked our host for all kinds of recommendations and requests well before our trip started. You’ll also have a fridge and can stock up on groceries or have them delivered to your place before you even arrive. This would be ideal if on an anti-cancer or special diet.

I found that with AirBnB we got what we paid for. Our first location was so drastically not as described that we got them to refund our money and found a hotel for even cheaper than they were charging! Our second place in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston was nice and clean and just as described. We are checking into our third location when we get into New York today so we shall see!

#9 Strategically Pack Your Supplements

I packed all of my week’s worth of supplements in my supplement box, but looking back it would have been easier to pack my individual time’s supplements in separate snack-sized baggies.

#10 White Noise App + Eye Mask

Something that surprised me for both of our stays in New York and Boston was how BRIGHT it gets in the early morning, Sunrise in Boston was before 6am today! I am so glad I brought an eye mask. Also- The “WhiteNoise” app on my phone saved the day from noisy street traffic, garbage trucks, and door slams which allowed us to get restorative sleep each night.

I hope you guys found all of this helpful! Traveling can be tricky when you’re trying to live healthy but it’s definitely doable. I’d love to hear your tricks for travel.
Looking for at-home salad bar ideas? Have a big family or having friends over? Here are a few set-ups that will make your gathering a lot easier and more fun!

Have you ever thought it was funny how blog posts nowadays seem like they are written by a computer? Well, it’s because they probably are! This is really me though, Cortney, the author of this blog since 2011. But lately bloggers are using AI to write their blogs because it can create perfectly formulaic posts that grab the search engine’s attention.

Anyways, enough of that. I just though it was interesting (and scary?) to share. Since this is the first brand new blog post I’ve written in a while, it’s just what is on my mind while I am writing. Algorithms and AI is also why you may see the key word “salad bar ideas” all over this post. The more I say it, the more Google picks up on this post and bumps it up in the search results! Did you learn something other than salad bar ideas? HAHA, mentioned it again.

I think ya’ll will find this blog post (on salad bar ideas) so helpful. Having a family salad bar night is truly an excellent way to make everyone happy and meet everyone’s different dietary needs and preferences.

And if you want more content like this SUBSCRIBE to my weekly, sometimes monthly email list so you won’t miss it!

Salad Bar Ideas for the Whole Family

For all of these recipes I use my food processor to chop all of my vegetables which makes the salad bar process so much faster! I cook and prepare three meals a day for a family of 8, so this is essential and majorly cuts down on time!

As always on this blog, I recommend organic, wild-caught or healthy-raised ingredients, but do your best and give God the rest. Misfits Market is my favorite way to order affordable organic produce shipped to your door with FREE shipping on orders over $100.
For displaying my salad bar, I lay out all of my ingredients on a stainless steel baking tray covered in parchment paper like these.

The display is part of the fun, so don’t skip a pretty display, but you don’t need all of the clean-up from using different bowls for each ingredient!

Let’s dig into these salad bar ideas for families.

I know that many of you may already be making kale chips, but this is the recipe that I have found easiest and most delicious. In fact, last week my daughter ate that entire tray you see her holding….by HERSELF. I actually had to bribe her with the kale chips to take bites of the other part of her dinner.

They are crunchy, have a tiny buttery factor from the olive oil, and are topped off with salty deliciousness. And this is without mentioning their amazing cancer-fighting abilities. Read on for the recipe!

Updated: May 17, 2023, originally published 2012

Easy and Tasty Kale Chips

Does anyone else get annoyed at the lengthy recipes on Pinterest or Google? The reason the creators have to talk about their recipe for PARAGRAPHS before you actually get to them is #1- Google will rank their recipe higher, and #2- So you have to scroll through their ads on their website.

Not here though. Here’s the recipe!

Easy and Tasty Kale Chips

1 head organic green kale

Olive Oil to taste

Sea Salt or Herbamare

Directions: Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees. Wash kale and dry (or sometimes as long as it’s organic I just tear it without washing. Sorry if this grosses you out…but you bake it anyways!) It is important not to use soaking wet kale. Tear kale into potato chip-sized pieces avoiding the large stems. Lay casually on a baking pan. Drizzle with olive oil. (Having an oil/ salad dressing dispenser with nozzle helps a lot in dispersing the oil evenly.) Sprinkle with sea salt or Herbamare.

Bake for about 10 minutes. Remove chips from oven and move kale chips around with tongs. Bake another 8-10 minutes depending on your oven until all chips are crunchy but not burned. (Note: soggy kale chips do NOT have the same awesome effect on my daughter!)

ENJOY!

I’m so excited to tell you Suzette’s amazing name and birth story today. She is our precious sixth child, and we are thrilled that she had a safe delivery and is now here with us!

Suzette’s Name

After using many of our family names with our first four daughters I had no idea what we would name our fifth baby girl. But God knew.

Early in my pregnancy I saw the name “Suzette” and immediately loved it.

Right away I appreciated that “Suzette” was so close to our dear friend Suzy Griswold’s name but not exact so it was unique.

As many of you know, Suzy and I met when she included me in what would become HealingStrong 10 years ago. Together with a core group of naturally-minded volunteers and cancer survivors, we put on a conference in 2013 bringing together the holistic cancer community for the first time ever in-person.

Today HealingStrong is thriving and has thousands of people meeting at our faith-centered natural healing support groups every month. And our families are more like family than friends!

I loved the idea of naming her in honor of someone so loved by us, so influential in our lives, and a woman of strong faith. Someone that we had such an amazing and similar history with.

When I shared this with Kevin, he began to like the name too, mainly because of the affiliation with Suzy. All of our kids have a meaning and purpose and “story” behind their name, so this was the perfect fit.

Suzette’s Birth Story

Suzette’s due date came and went, and day after day our sweet girl was still cozied up.

My other babies were all born after their due date, too, but they came earlier and early than the one before. Our oldest was 10 days overdue, second was 3 days, third was 2 days overdue, fourth was 1 day overdue, and our fifth baby was born on his due date. So why was Suzette not budging?

It turns out that after we told Suzy that we were naming our baby girl “Suzette” in honor of her, she kept something to herself. Her birthday was February 21st, TWELVE days past my February 9th due date!

She had been secretly praying that Suzette would come on her birthday but didn’t want to wish that on this poor 40-year-old sixth time mom!

Day after day kept going by and I tried all of the things to induce labor that had worked before. When I was a week overdue I tried castor oil, something that had worked several times before. I experienced NOTHING. That day was when Suzy told me that “you know my birthday is February 21st…” Suzy is one of those people that prays fervently and without ceasing, and I have always believed God hears my prayers better when Suzy prays with me. (Matthew 18:20, am I right?) She’s always been my prayer booster.

And knowing Suzy was praying, we stopped all methods of natural induction. I wanted to see what God would decide.

On Monday the 20th, my midwife encouraged us to go in for a non-stress test and ultrasound to make sure everything was ok with the baby. My age and the fact I was so overdue were factors, but everything came back excellent. Since I was nearing the two weeks overdue mark, she gave me a quick cervical massage and a homeopathic that would only work if my body was ready.

Well, you guessed it. The next day, the afternoon of Suzy’s birthday, my labor kicked into high gear quickly and about 3 hours later, our sweet Suzette was born! ON SUZY’S BIRTHDAY! We have never been so reassured that we picked the name that the Lord gave us! It was a blessed time!

Suzy came over to spend the day with us and was holding Suzette just minutes after she was born in our home. Birthday twins.

HealingStrong is truly a family, but especially our Suzy!

When it comes to cleaning, I’ve noticed people tend to settle into two different camps. They love it or they hate it. They let it build up until they can’t stand it anymore (or they have guests over), OR they have a militant cleaning schedule and can’t do anything for the day until the cleaning is done. Learning how to clean your house with Norwex products brings a joy and simplicity to cleaning that I’ll talk about in this post.

Since we were both raised in a stricter cleaning environment, my husband and I tend to lean the other way- towards TIDY but “oh, there’s a pink mold ring in the toilet? Ok, I’ll get the toilet brush…” mentality.

We have always struggled with maintaining a cleaning schedule because with the little amount of downtime we have, we don’t want to spend it cleaning!

Until now. Cleaning is SO MUCH EASIER and FASTER and I love Norwex.

Toxic Cleaning Products and Cancer

It is well known that conventional cleaning products are horrible for both us and the environment. Like REALLY REALLY awful. Over 80,000 new chemicals have been introduced into our homes and environment in the last 50 years. That’s CRAZY. Even crazier is that the majority of them have never been tested for their long-term impact on human or environmental health.

When I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2008, my husband and I came upon study upon study linking lymphomas to chemical exposure. All of our household cleaning products had to GO, especially after we decided to purse non-toxic treatment.

Ineffective Natural Products

You can see in an older post I wrote, that for years I used basic, non-toxic ingredients to clean my home. The problem was that these products took a lot of WORK to become effective. Since a vinegar and water mixture was my main cleaning product, I couldn’t reuse kitchen cloths because they would leave my house constantly smelling like vinegar. This meant we went through A LOT of paper towels each day to wipe down counters.

Scrubbing with baking soda and Dr. Bronner’s soap was effective in the shower, but it took a LONG TIME and tons of scrubbing (which I avoided for way too long.)

Cleaning just wasn’t fun and took a lot of work and time to be semi-effective.

Why I Love Norwex Microfiber Products

Enter Norwex. A friend of mine bought me a simple Norwex Envirocloth and Window Cloth as a thank you and I haven’t turned back. I became obsessed with how much just these two cloths could clean!

They replaced both my glass cleaner (think: Windex) and my all-purpose cleaner (think: Fantastic, Clorox Clean-Up, or in my case vinegar/water mix) which during my pre-cancer days cleaned the majority of my house.

I also love because you only use WATER with them, they are completely non-toxic and you ONLY BUY THEM ONCE! No need to buy a bunch of cleaning products every few months.

How does it work you wonder?

Norwex microfiber is woven with microfiber 1/200th the width of a human hair. It clings and grabs EVERYTHING. Once wet with water, it works to pick up bacteria by actually GRABBING it and holding it in the cloth until you rinse the cloth under very warm water. It removes up to 99% of bacteria and contaminants.

Even more fascinating to me is that antibacterial silver is woven throughout the microfiber to create a self-purifying fabric. My microfiber usually lasts a week without stinking or washing! It’s. Just. Plain AWESOME.

Norwex microfiber can be used on all surfaces you currently use your all-purpose cleaners: kitchen, bath, shower, external toilet area, floors, cars, and outdoor furniture.

***Here are some AMAZING before and afters using Norwex microfiber.***

As cancer researcher and author of Cancer-Free: Your Guide to Gentle, Non-Toxic Healing, Bill Henderson once said, “No cancer either begins or thrives if the patient’s immune system is strong.” So, a first priority for either prevention or healing is to prioritize equipping your immune system. We can learn about one of the fundamental ways to do this through the research of pharmacologist and immune system expert, AJ Lanigan and his product, Beta 1, 3-D Glucan for cancer.

This post includes an interview with AJ I did in 2022 and answers many great questions I have been asked about Beta Glucan since I started taking it in 2008. I really think you’ll enjoy it! (If you are short on time, there are timestamps in the video description so you can skip between questions.)

What Is Beta Glucan?

Beta 1, 3-D Glucan is an immune modulating supplement extracted from baker’s yeast. Its primary use is to strengthen the immune system without causing an autoimmune response from over-stimulation. It functions by planting a receptor in the outer membrane of your “neutrophil immune cells” that allows them to better recognize cancer cells (and other pathogens) in order to destroy them. Normally, your body’s cellular defenses do not recognize cancer cells as they are disguised from the immune system.

I took Beta Glucan every morning through my cancer treatment starting in November, 2008. Because the therapeutic dose called for 500mg per 50 pounds of body weight and I was 120 pounds, I alternated every other day 1,500mg/ 1,000mg. After taking it, you have to wait 30 minutes before eating.

Even though (at the time of this post) I have been cancer-free for 15 years, I still take 1,000 – 1,500mg of Beta 1, 3-D Glucan every morning, 30 minutes before breakfast and have so for the past 15 years.

Beta Glucan for Cancer

AJ Lanigan himself had his Beta 1, 3-D Glucan tested at Harvard, Tulane, the University of Louisville, Baylor, Johns Hopkins among others, and it has been on the market for over 30 years. Through peer-reviewed studies, they tested it against other high-end immune boosting products and found it in fact to be “far superior” to all others on the market.

It’s quite astonishing, but THOUSANDS (198,000 as of 2023) of studies have been performed on glucans and their ability to modulate the immune system, making it more effective in finding and attacking pathogens.

There is an entire organization that has gathered these studies and you can visit their website HERE and search for specific studies or browse alphabetically.

Watch My Interview with Beta Glucan Expert, AJ Lanigan

(Added for 2022 update)

After 14 years now of taking Beta Glucan daily, I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down and record an interview with the formulator, AJ Lanigan. I definitely had a few questions for him, and he didn’t disappoint in answering them thoroughly.

How did AJ get started into Beta Glucan research? (01:00)

Beta Glucan as regular immune system care: (08:20)

My personal experience with Beta Glucan since 2008: (12:20)

How does Beta Glucan help the immune system and can effectiveness be measured? (13:45)

Beta Glucan for Kids vs. Kids’ Multivitamin? Which is best if I had to pick one? (~24:00 -28:00 mark)

Beta Glucan’s activity on a cellular level: (31:15)

Can my immune system become “dependent” on Beta Glucan? Can I “take a break” from Beta Glucan? (34:00)

Beta Glucan being “so expensive” — addressing this problem through “pulse dosing.” (My favorite part of the interview!) (35:00)

Last Question: “I’ve heard a rumor that I really don’t have to wait 30 minutes to eat after taking Beta Glucan. Is this true?” (Listen to the whole answer!) (47:15)

Where Can I Buy Beta Glucan?

I purchase my Beta 1, 3-D Glucan from a local Atlanta company, Better Way Health. This is actually the same company I purchased my first bottle from in 2008! It is important that you purchase beta glucan from Transfer Point or Better Way Health, as it is the most potent beta glucan on the market. You can get 10% off of your order by using my code “ACM” at checkout.

(Update 2024: I am now at 16 years remission and still taking Beta Glucan at the maintenance 2 capsule dose daily!)

2023 marks TEN YEARS of being Samaritan Ministries members for our family. And we have definitely had some experience with health care sharing since we’ve joined! Lots of variety of injuries, birth stories (several home births), and other recoveries and testing. I can’t wait to share our very honest and detailed Samaritan Ministries review with you.

For those of you hearing about healthcare sharing for the first time, it is an alternative to health insurance that satisfies insurance requirements and functions similarly to insurance without being (or costing as much) as insurance.

In this post I talk about what it means to “share” with other members each month, what it is like to submit a medical need, the various needs we have experienced, and using alternative medicine doctors as your primary provider. We also had several emergency hospital stays that we paid with 50% discounts. It’s all in this post.

Our Samaritan Ministries Review and Experience

I have been wanting to write this Samaritan Ministries review update for a long time now. I have written a few other posts, too, although fair warning – I have NOT updated those posts in a while. Some of the info on those may not be updated, but you can check them out below:

**I mentioned this in many of the posts linked above, but Samaritan Ministries is a biblical, faith-based ministry. Members are asked to sign a statement of faith and agree to the guidelines for members. If you are looking for a secular option for health sharing, I have heard nice things from readers about Liberty Healthshare.**

Why We Joined Samaritan Ministries

A bit of a back story about my family and why we joined Samaritan…

In 2013 I quit my job as a teacher to stay home with our two small children KNOWING we were going to choose Samaritan over traditional health insurance. A friend had told me about how much it had blessed her family and knowing my preference for alternative medicine- suggested that it would be a good fit. I was grateful because the traditional insurance options we were given started at over $1,400 monthly for our family of 4 at the time!

After my cancer diagnosis in 2008 and choice to use nontoxic and alternative therapies for treatment, my family no longer utilizes the care of conventionally trained doctors unless an emergency. Because of this, having traditional and expensive insurance is a bit useless for us unless in cases of emergency.

Samaritan was a perfect fit because they allow for us to use the type of treatment we believe is best, along with having conventional emergency care and lab testing when needed. They believe in choice and options for their members.

How Samaritan Works: Monthly “Shares”

With Samaritan, each month we send our $595 “Share” directly to another member. The “Share” amount varies by age and how many people are on your membership. You can calculate that HERE.

A “Share” is the monthly amount you send to another family so they can use it to pay for their medical bills. You will have a new family every month to send your share to and will get that information in an envelope along with a prayer guide and a monthly newsletter with helpful tips and news.

Also note that individuals and couples without children pay less per month (as low as $190 with reductions for those under 29 in good health.) We are a family of 7, so we pay much more. Families of 8+ pay a bit more than that.

You have the option to send your “Share” online through PayPal or through the mail and the members receiving shares track their receipt of shares with a checklist – online or paper and submit this to the Samaritan office.

If you have a medical need and have to see a doctor or have a hospital bill, that is another process called “Submitting a Need” that I’ll write about below.

Applying to Become a Samaritan Ministries Member

To apply to be a member, you need to fill out an application form either online or by mail. Make sure you read through the guidelines before signing anything.

There is a one-time application fee of $200 at the start of membership. So the first month we joined we paid $200 + our monthly share to the Samaritan Ministries office. After that we just paid our monthly share each month straight to other members via mail or online via PayPal. The only exception is the month you renew your membership each year. You’ll send that share to headquarters.

A few other important things to know:

When you apply, you will also need the signature of a church leader to confirm you are active in your church. You will also do this at membership renewal each year.

Samaritan Ministries is a Christian ministry and they ask that members adhere to the Christian principles outlined in the guidelines and on the application. These are things like not drinking excessively, attending church regularly, etc.

How Samaritan Works: Submitting “Needs”

A “Need” is what you file after you have received medical treatment for whatever it is you are dealing with. Samaritan is different than insurance in that you are completely free to choose the provider best for you as long as they are licensed in your state.

Samaritan also works differently in that if the doctor demands payment on the spot, you pay UP FRONT and then are reimbursed later by members’ shares. This amount has never been more than $150 for any of the doctors’ offices we have been in before arranging a payment schedule.

A “Need” is the total scope of the treatment for a medical condition (for instance – a broken bone, a pregnancy, etc- it’s the TOTAL medical condition, not each visit.)

For each “need” YOU are responsible for paying for the first $400. (This is called your “personal responsibility.”) If you ask for a self-pay discount upon payment at the doctor’s office or when setting up a hospital payment plan, etc, you receive $250 off of your personal responsibility when you provide proof of discount or a “fair price”.

In most of our medical needs in the past 10 years, we have NOT had to pay all $400 due to self-pay discounts we asked for.

This is a system designed to incentivize members to ask for discounts for their medical bills since we are self-pay payment instead of having to go through insurance – which means the doctor or hospital get their payment more quickly.

This was confusing at first for me at first, so I’ve included examples of what I’m talking about in my need experiences below. Also – it differs slightly nowadays than it used to, so our family’s earlier needs (pre-2020) were less expensive than today and our personal responsibility was less for many years. Inflation has changed things everywhere, especially healthcare.

The new system encourages Samaritan members to check the “Healthcare Bluebook” online database (using your Samaritan login) for the most affordable treatment facility or doctor. If you can prove you received a fair price, you have money reimbursed off your personal responsibility up to $250. Same works if you are asking for discounts on emergency situations.

Our various “Needs” over the past 10 years….

Here’s a rundown of our various medical “Needs” and how life as a family of 7 (almost 8) has kept us and Samaritan busy over the past 10 years….

Headaches from TMJ/ Teeth Grinding: 2014

Total cost: ~$600

We only paid ~$40 after we asked for a ~$260 discount from our family dentist for self-pay and documented it when we submitted our need paperwork with Samaritan (simply an itemized bill showing the discount.)

Although routine dental care costs are not shared, medical conditions whose root cause requires the care of a dentist IS covered.

A new mouth guard and learning new stretches helped me immensely with this problem.

Home Birth 2015

Total cost: $4,126

Samaritan covered 100%, we paid $0 because members pay no personal responsibility for home birth since it helps reduce costs for the ministry. Hospital births have a $300 responsibility total which is still significantly reduced from insurance!

All of my supplements, chiropractic care, ultrasounds, labs, midwifery fees, newborn care, and postpartum visits, EVERYTHING was covered.

I got THE BEST cards from members. I wrote about the whole experience here.

Gallbladder Pain and Digestive Problems 2015

Total cost: ~$1,500

We paid first $300 personal responsibility and the remaining was reimbursed through member sharing.

We saw an alternative medicine doctor licensed in acupuncture in our state. I used homeopathy, supplements, and a series of gallbladder and liver cleanses to eliminate my symptoms. For those who read my blog frequently, this is also the reason I stopped eating the Budwig Mixture after almost 7 years post-cancer. Apparently gallbladder problems are common after multiple pregnancies.

Seeing an alternative practitioner for this (in my opinion) saved the ministry thousands of dollars. What could have ended up in gallbladder removal surgery was alleviated because of my practitioner’s suggestion of a more gentler approach first. And not to mention, I got to keep my gallbladder.

Thyroid Concerns and Adrenal Fatigue 2015

Total cost: $4,459 (over the course of a year)

We paid first $300 and then received the rest from members.

After almost a year of being up with a baby or toddler several times throughout the night, my adrenal system was in need of care and my lab tests were showing how it was affecting my thyroid.

We saw a functional MD this time along with craniosacral therapist who was also an MD and homepath. All of my supplements were covered for the first 120 days. After that we had to pay for them out of pocket. Any alternative therapy-type adjustments are limited to 40 (I think I probably used less than 10.)

Lab tests were covered 100%.

I did not use medication, so we did not need to submit for that. Lab test and doctors’ visits were the most expensive on this need. This need lasted the longest so we actually did go over the 120 days of supplement allowance and ended up paying a few hundred out of pocket for supplements. I did notice in the guidelines, that in cases of cancer, the 120 day supplement allowance is waved until patient is in remission, so that’s great news for anyone choosing alternative or integrative cancer treatment!

Note: All alternative medicine practitioners need to be licensed for your need to be approved.

Cancer Screening Needed 2016

Total cost: $900

We paid first $300 and Samaritan shared the rest.

In 2016 I felt the need to do some more intensive screening and blood work to investigate my remission status from cancer (it had been 8 years since I was diagnosed!)

We chose to use a blood test called Oncoblot. All markers were clear.

Broken Finger 2016

Total cost: $1,128

We paid $0 after over $300 in discounts from the doctor’s office for asking for the “self-pay rate.”

Back Pain 2017

Total cost: ~$1,000

No discounts were available so we paid the first $300 for this.

Received only chiropractic care for this which is limited to 40 visits and no “maintenance care” once condition has been alleviated.

Pregnancy + Miscarriage 2018

Total cost: $~2,700

This need began as home birth midwifery care so it was shared 100% and we paid $0.

Midwifery care, supplements, ultrasound, and eventual emergency room visit were 100% covered.

Cards from members were so sweet after this need was shared. One woman even sent me a homemade baby blanket and prayer cards.

Broken Arm 2018

Total cost: $3,000

We paid first $300 after doctor’s office would not record the discounts for self-pay on our invoice. Dealing with the billing department of certain doctors’ offices can be a a pain, but for the most part they are reasonable. This office was not.

Home Birth 2019

Total cost: Probably around ~$4,000 with ultrasounds, supplements, and chiropractic care

We are paying $0 after submitting our home birth midwife’s invoice ahead of time (last time we didn’t know we could and waited until the end of pregnancy.

Broken Humerus Bone + Surgery/ Hospital Stay 2020

Total cost: $24,600

Our 7 year old jumped out of a tree and broke her arm (supracondylar fracture) which required pins and surgery.

We gathered all bills and called hospital to ask for 50% discount which they honored with immediate payment. We paid with our credit card (to get points) and then was reimbursed by Samaritan members within 6 weeks. We only paid a total of $150 out of pocket because of receiving a discount (Samaritan rewarded us with $250 off of our personal responsibility for working to reduce our bill.)

Broken Femur + Surgery/ Hospital Stay 2020

Total cost: $20,400

Two months later our 5 year old broke her femur riding a scooter. I couldn’t believe it, but I knew the drill from our experience two months prior. We went straight to the emergency room at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and they got her right in because of her level of pain. She had surgery and casting the next morning. I ordered a special seatbelt (since was in a half-body cast) and wheelchair with no problem. All was paid for by Samaritan shares and we received the discount for this one also. We only paid $150 out of pocket.

Note: 2020 was the year that the “personal responsibility” was raised from $300 to $400. Samaritan also stopped reducing your personal responsibility amount based on the discount you asked for and received. For instance, if I had $300 in discounts documented (because I called the doctor/hospital and negotiated), in the past, SM would require of me a $0 personal responsibility for that bill! It was awesome, but apparently not everyone cared to ask for discounts or obtain a “fair price” even with discounts, so SM switched over to the “fair price” “Healthcare Bluebook” database which is honestly a bit more confusing and doesn’t apply to emergency situations or home birth.

With the new policy, if you show on your bills that you ask for a discount and get a fair price (whether through the “Healthcare Bluebook” database or your own negotiating for bill discounts,) then SM sends you a check for $250, reducing your personal responsibility to $150. But the days of $0 personal responsibility are over. I have called SM various times and expressed my dislike for this change, but overall Samaritan Ministries is still amazing!

Chronic Headaches 2019-2021

Total Cost: ~$5,000

I used a combination of cranial osteopathy, homeopathy, and nutritional changes to address this problem over the course of two years. I learned a lot and am so happy to say I no longer have chronic headaches! I had to pay the first $400 on this one because my holistic and functional medicine doctors did not take insurance and therefore did not offer discounts. All “medicines”, including homeopathy and supplements prescribed by my functional chiropractor was covered. (You just have to get a supplements form signed by your doctor.)

Home Birth 2021

Total cost: ~$5,000

All costs were shared/ covered including supplements (NORA tea, iron supplements, chlorophyll)

Placenta encapsulation was also covered (used as a supplement). Doula coverage is also shared if preferred.

Home Birth 2023

Total cost ~$5,500

Note: All alternative treatment limitations are in section VIII in the Samaritan Guidelines. They are really flexible for the most part as you can see above.

Save to Share….(for over $250,000 in medical bills)

Coverage of $250,000 per member, per incident is the standard with Samaritan membership annually.

Read more about the Save to Share program if you would like additional “coverage” over $250,000 per person per incident. This program has members put aside an additional $180 – $595 + a yearly $15 enrollment fee in case another member needs additional shares over their $250,000 coverage with their membership.

A few more ways Samaritan is different than health insurance….

First off, it isn’t insurance…

Samaritan Ministries is a non-profit that connects members to each other to share in bearing each others’ medical debt burden. It is not a legally-binding relationship like traditional insurance.

Technically, there *could* be months that you may not receive enough money to cover your full need. This has happened a few times over the past ten years. They call it “proration” where the ministries’ NEEDS cost more than our shares, so only 80-90% of the cost of each need is paid for that month. The next month, the rest of the shares were paid, it just was delayed because there wasn’t enough share money.

If this continues to happen over the course of several months, members are asked to vote on whether to raise our monthly “share” cost to alleviate the need to prorate. Members vote to approve the new rates and that is what our new “Share” payment will be going forward. After a “Share” rate is raised, if there is a surplus in share money, members share payments are lowered for just that month due to a surplus of shares over need costs.

You would never see an insurance company do that!

You have to be in charge of your medical bills…

With Samaritan YOU are in charge of your healthcare. You can choose the doctors you love, no matter where or how unique their specialty is (as long as they are licensed in your state.)

If you are missionary overseas, you receive your care needed where you are, convert bills to U.S. dollars, and submit them to Samaritan for sharing.

If you choose to receive cancer treatment in Mexico, same thing (you will need to discuss your plans with the Samaritan office ahead of time for approval and give them the heads’ up.)

Perhaps it gets a bit annoying at times, and you need to be organized with your bills and submitting them (making photocopies, etc), but I wouldn’t trade this health freedom for any sort of convenience of an insurance company and co-pay system.

I will add that when I would call my traditional health insurance company (years ago before we had Samaritan), I waited on hold for long periods of time and no one seemed to really be accommodating to my choice of care. They absolutely would not offer to pay for on any of my alternative cancer treatments (which would have been tens of thousands less expensive than the chemotherapy and radiation treatments they would pay for.)

They definitely did not pray with me on the phone and ask me how I was doing.

With Samaritan expect incredibly kind, individualized care. The office staff has always been so incredibly kind and compassionate every time I have had to call and the wait times are prompt. In 10 years I have never had an issue and have only had gratitude towards them. I love when they kindly ask if they can pray for me and my family. It’s never weird and I always feel better afterwards.

Who would NOT be a good fit for Samaritan?

There are certain pre-existing conditions that are not shareable. This does not include everything, so I advise calling Samaritan after reading the member guidelines to discuss this with them. Cancer is 5 years remission without recurrence for a new or recurring diagnosis to be shareable.

“Well-visit” pediatrician appointments are not shareable. You will need to plan for this financially and pay out of pocket for each routine visit. It is important to note that vaccines are not covered under the plan either so seeking out a public health center or self-pay pediatrician may be good options for this situation.

Routine “screening” visits such us annual women’s well-care and mammograms, annual colonoscopies, etc. are also not shareable and you will need to plan financially to pay out-of-pocket for those as well.

Those with pre-existing conditions can still join as members, but any new related needs would not be shareable and would need to be submitted as a “Special Prayer Need” so members can give additionally to help relieve your medical burden and also to pray for you.

Vision and Dental needs are not shareable unless they are the root cause or result of a medical condition.

Motorcycle accidents and accidents while under the influence of drugs or alcohol are not shareable.

Birth control, fertility treatment, tubal ligations, vasectomies, and abortions are also not eligible for sharing. Neither are gender reassignment surgeries (had to add that one in for this 2023 update.)

Integrity of the ministry…

One thing I didn’t realize when signing up for SM is that it literally the PEOPLE are the ministry! Samaritan headquarters tries to keep the overhead low so everything we use (except for that once a year monthly share to the office and application fee) is sent DIRECTLY to members.

It is certainly biblical healthcare where members bear each others’ burdens. In months when there is more share money than needs to pay, the monthly share amount has been reduced by as much as $100 for each member. I just love that transparency and honesty.

I will also add that EVERY SINGLE TIME I have called the ministry with a question or to start a new need or ask a question about alternative therapies, I have always been greeted with someone who actually knew what I was talking about and supported my choice.

We decided on Samaritan 10 years ago because I felt all of this from the start.
