Africa Day is the annual commemoration on May 25 of the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). On this day, leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 1991, the OAU established the African Economic Community, and in 2002 the OAU established its own successor, the African Union.

In the widely publicized patent infringement case between Google and Oracle, a San Francisco jury on Wednesday found that Google’s Android operating system does not infringe Oracle’s patents. Jurors have been dismissed and Judge William Aslup of the U.S. District court of Northern California exonerated the Internet giant of any wrong doing. The verdict marks the end of the trial’s second phase, which focused on patent infringement claims. Google earlier this month was found to have infringed Oracle’s copyrights, however, and the proceedings are set to resume on Tuesday morning.

Google closes Motorola acquisition

In line with earlier reports, Google on Tuesday (22 May 2012) finalized its acquisition of Motorola Mobility. The $12.5 billion merger was approved by regulators in China on Monday after having been given the green light by the United States Department of Justice this past February.

Chinese regulators did stipulate terms for its approval, however, namely that Google must continue to make Android open-source and freely available.

Former Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha has stepped down and Google’s Dennis Woodside will replace him as chief executive. “I’m excited to announce today that our Motorola Mobility deal has closed,” Google CEO Larry Page wrote in a letter published on Google’s blog.

“Motorola is a great American tech company that has driven the mobile revolution, with a track record of over 80 years of innovation, including the creation of the first cell phone. We all remember Motorola’s StarTAC, which at the time seemed tiny and showed the real potential of these devices. And as a company who made a big, early bet on Android, Motorola has become an incredibly valuable partner to Google.” An unconfirmed report on Monday claimed that the merger will result in layoffs at Motorola.

MTN represent Africa and South Africa this year’s ranking highlights the progress of Africa’s economic development with the arrival of the first African brand in the Top 100.

Jennifer Roberti, Executive for Marketing, MTN Group, says the recognition by BrandZ is humbling for a young brand such as MTN.

“For MTN, it’s about brand relevance. MTN has established a number of foundations to work with our communities to address socio-economic challenges in our markets. We also continue to introduce products and services that add value to the daily lives of our customers and communities alike,” said Roberti.

Millward Brown released its BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands 2012 report recently, revealing that Apple, IBM and Google are the top three brands in the world

Please South Africans don’t add race on this article I have one race “GREEN RACE” to avoid racism; I know you are very fragile when it comes to race. I mean poor GREEN race not Black and White please.

BlackBerry vs Android vs Apple IOS

Vodacom’s latest statistics reveal that Android is showing strong growth in South Africa, easily surpassing the number of Apple iPhones. However, BlackBerry remains by far the most popular smartphone platform in the country.

Vodacom currently has 2.3 million BlackBerry users on its network, followed by 450,000 Android users and 250,000 iPhone users.

The controversial painting of President Jacob Zuma in the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg has been defaced, gallery staff confirmed on Tuesday.

“The work has been painted over with black and red paint,” a spokesman said.

Two men were involved: One man painted an X on the painting, then another came and painted over the 'offending bits'.

Metro FM said the two were a lecturer and his student.

Both men were detained by gallery security staff.

One of the men was seen being dramatically restrained and wrestled to the ground by a security guard.

The painting, called "The Spear" by Brett Murray, had been bought by a German collector for about R136,000.

Both the face and waist section of the painting are now covered in black paint and no longer visible
