Prepare by monitoring and collecting data about vulnerable coastal areas
Respond in ways that enhance New Jersey’s official response to spills

SpillSpotters is a new citizens’ response network launched by the American Littoral Society that provides hands-on training workshops to help citizens identify and document coastal wildlife through biological assessments so we’ll be better prepared in the event of an oil spill in New Jersey waters. All workshops are free. Registration is required.

Upcoming Event: Attracting Birds & Butterflies to Your Garden, May 9, South Brunswick

On Wednesday, May 9, Middlesex County’s Rutgers Cooperative Extension office will present a workshop on “Attracting Birds & Butterflies to Your Garden” 6:30 PM at the EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave, South Brunswick. The fee for the workshop is $20. This will be a classroom & outdoor workshop.

Rutgers Master Gardener Dale Duchai will teach participants what plants and features can be added to yards to make them desirable to local winged wildlife. Attendees will learn the value of native plants, and what plants will attract what types of butterflies. This practical workshop is designed for the beginner or intermediate gardener.

Registration is required by May 7 and the program fee is $20. The size of the class will be limited, so register early to insure a space. For more information contact the Ag office at 732-398-5262.

Make a difference and help protect our waterways!

The AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassadors Program and the Weis Ecology Center are holding a free training on Saturday, May 19, 2012.

Volunteers will be trained on how to easily assess their local waterways using the NJDEP’s newest volunteer protocol. Once trained, volunteers can submit their data to the NJDEP, which uses it to understand trends or identify pollution problems.

The training will be held at the Weis Ecology Center, 150 Snake Den Road, Ringwood, NJ, on May 19, 2012 from 9am – 12pm.

The training is FREE but registration is requested - please contact Leeann Sinpatanasakul at ambassador@passaiccountynj.org or call 973-569-4055 to register.

Bring water and a snack. Dress for fieldwork: bring waders or rainboots if possible.

The public is invited to join the American Littoral Society and Al & Sam’s Canoes for an Earth Day Paddle at Union Lake on Saturday, April 21st from 9 am - 1 pm at the City-owned, Union Lake Beach off Canal Street.

The Littoral Society will lead a guided paddle from 10 am - noon to showcase Union Lake’s ecological and cultural significance and raise awareness about efforts to protect over a mile of shoreline and adjacent forest habitat along New Jersey’s second-largest lake.

Al and Sam’s Canoe will be renting canoes and kayaks to Earth Day Paddle participants at a special rate. Canoes and kayaks will also be available for purchase.
