Universal Flu Vaccine Tested

By: A Person

Universal Flu Vaccine Tested

A universal flu vaccine which could mean an end to the annual jab is being tested on UK volunteers.

It targets a different part of the virus to current vaccines, which means it does not have to be altered every year to match circulating strains.

If successful, the vaccine developed by Oxford University researchers would also be a key weapon in a flu pandemic.

Experts said such a vaccine was the "holy grail" for flu researchers but there was still a long way to go.

Study leader, Dr Sarah Gilbert, said traditional influenza vaccines are designed to prompt an immune response to H and N proteins on the outer shell of the virus.

But these proteins are prone to mutation - and every year the vaccine has to be reformulated on the basis of the strains likely to be most prominent.

So instead, the researchers have developed a vaccine on the basis of proteins inside the cell, which are far more similar across different strains.

An intelligently designed vaccine to protect against those wretched Darwinian viruses.

The opinions of this blog entry are representative of it's author's opinion and not that of the website it appears on or the website's owner.

Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved.
Honda Insight Hybrid

By: Liv

I found this curious. Take a real good look, not it's not a Toyota Prius, it's a Honda. Despite Honda already having a hybrid, they've decided to resurrect the defunct insight as a Prius clone.

“The name Insight was chosen to denote Honda’s ’insight’ into a new era in which hybrid vehicles come within reach of most car buyers,”

The original insight in 99' was also a hybrid, but failed miserably. A couple things that make this interesting. One is our previous discussion about America's need to have a "unique" looking vehicle in order to set themselves apart on the road. As to say it's not so much the technology or the gas mileage but the "clothes their cars wear"... but we all knew this from the Hummer.

The other interesting thing to denote is the fact that Honda's new insight isn't so far off from another car we caught in London that we can't get over here, the Honda Type R, and personally the Prius has always reminded me of an evolved CRX. So whose copying who, I'm not sure.

Tokyo-based Honda, Japan’s No. 2 automaker, will show a “concept model” of the Insight at the Paris Motor Show next month, Honda said in a statement Thursday.

The opinions of this blog entry are representative of it's author's opinion and not that of the website it appears on or the website's owner.

Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved.
Politics and oil

By: SouthernFriedInfidel

I just got around to watching late July's interview of Nancy Pelosi on The Daily Show, and I have a question about a point from that little chat. Pelosi said that one reason she opposes opening ANWAR and offshore sites to drilling is because the oil companies already own huge expanses of sites within American territories that are not being drilled in yet.

I tried to do some research to discover the facts behind this claim, but of course Google is swamped with sites that are dedicated to murdering the Speaker of the House... figuratively, I hope, but these days, who can tell?

Anyway. I was wondering of the folks around here who know far better how to search the Internet could help me out a bit.

1) What sort of property is Pelosi talking about?
2) Why would an oil company that owns lad that is floating on oil not drill there?
3) What is to be gained from getting oil/gas/whatever from offshore sites that are being disputed, as opposed to working on the lands that are already approved for mining?

Just wondering...

The opinions of this blog entry are representative of it's author's opinion and not that of the website it appears on or the website's owner.

Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved.
Boobs, Breasts, Breast Feeding...

By: Liv

The mammary gland is nothing but modified version of the sweat gland, but for many people who can't separate the breast from a sexual object it enrages many who witness the breast in public.

The Surgeon General even suggests that "Babies be fed with breast milk only", but opponents of breast feeding in public suggest the vision of a woman breastfeeding is visually similar to performing sexual acts in public.

43 States have laws preventing the displaying of breasts. (I'm not sure our local laws, though Greensboring's lawyers are working hard on that.)

Update: N.C. Gen. Stat. § 14-190.9 (1993) states that a woman is allowed to breastfeed in any public or private location, and that she is not in violation of indecent exposure laws. (HB 1143)

As you may have guessed my personal stand on the whole thing is that everyone is entitled to their freedom over their own bodies, but some argue flashing one's boobs is Intrusive on unwilling viewers. Okay, but so is the fat guy who walks down my street during the summer who weighs just short of an air-craft carrier.

No one ever complains about the topless women of the Amazon in National Geographic, but if Janet Jackson's nipple slips, America goes nuts, Millions of dollars in fines, and careers are on the line.

What I don't get is why it's okay for men to go without clothing, but not for women. Both men & women have mammary glands, nipples, and areolas, it's just in women (most) the surface of the chest has fattier tissue then (some) men. How is it okay to criminalize that?

Top Free, an organization that fights to free the breast has many documented case of prosecutions, arrests, etc.

The opinions of this blog entry are representative of it's author's opinion and not that of the website it appears on or the website's owner.

Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved.
By: SouthernFriedInfidel

After all the hoopla and heartache over the tax incentive given to get a Dell plant here in NC... they're considering closing up shop.

I wonder if 3 years of business is enough to pay back what the taxpayers sunk into that place?

The opinions of this blog entry are representative of it's author's opinion and not that of the website it appears on or the website's owner.

Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved.
How Much Money Would it Take to Buy Your Vote.

By: Liv

Honestly. Seriously. I'm really wondering? It would really be hard for me to believe that all of us are so patriotic our votes couldn't be bought. (Unless some of us our rich.) So I wonder what's the price? Would you vote McCain for $20,000? Would you swap votes for Obama for a cool $10,000?

If one is willing to trade there vote for money, what does that say about voting when ultimately anyone can be bought?

The opinions of this blog entry are representative of it's author's opinion and not that of the website it appears on or the website's owner.

Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved.
Base Jumping

By: Liv

OMFG! Click on this link for the video. HOLY CRAP!

Base-jumper Hans Lange managed to avoid serious injury after jumping from the side of a mountain in Norway.

He escaped with just a broken leg after his parachute failed to release properly, and he landed in a tree.

Flying down a mountainside in a specially designed suit is now popular among base-jumpers.

BBC News Channel presenters Jon Sopel and Sophie Long describe how the dramatic jump unfolded.

The opinions of this blog entry are representative of it's author's opinion and not that of the website it appears on or the website's owner.

Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved.
Teaching Gay History in North Carolina Schools.

By: Liv

It's been awhile since I attended NC's public schools. My children seem to be too young for "History" yet. When I went, (pre-1995) we learned about "Blackbeard", "Presidents","MLK Jr", etc.... but I can't recall learning anything about the civil rights movement of Gays & Lesbians during the sixties. Technically I can't remember any mention of any historical information as pertaining to gays or lesbians. Why would schools, for better or worse choose to eliminate such an important piece of history that occurred in the history of it's people?

So I wonder what the status is now, on GLBT education in the schools? Something in my conscience tells me they don't teach it. That parents might throw a hoo-ha over it. I don't get that though. I mean it's history. Whether you like it or not, it did happen. Just as did the Kennedy Assassination, and Watergate. What's amazing to me is how intertwined the movement, historical wise; it is connected with all of our history and the other persecution of minorities. From the brandings in Nazi Germany, which later became symbols of pride. The irony of the closing of the Molly houses in London,to the great Scientific movements of Freud, & Kinsey.

I mean we learned about the American Flag, and even the British flag in world history... but should kids have atleast some reference of Gilbert Baker's creation of the gay flag in 1978 and why it's important? It is one of the most widely used symbols of modern time. Even Jesse Jackson has "borrowed" the flag as a symbol of "freedom".

I really think it's important stuff here. More to the point, the lack of Gay history in our children's curriculum, questions as to whether history is being censored by those who don't want to recognize the hard work and long road minorities have taken to get to where they are.

The opinions of this blog entry are representative of it's author's opinion and not that of the website it appears on or the website's owner.

Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved.
Gallery Hop, Winston Salem

By: Nfidel

The First Friday Gallery Hop is tonight in Winston Salem from 7 to 10 pm. There is plenty to interest both kids and adults. There will be belly dancers.
Here is a Link to a page describing just a few of the galleries.
Parking is easy to find all around the area. For convenience I usually park in the parking deck at 6th and Cherry Streets.

My favorite galleries are the 6th and Trade Gallery (sorry, no link available), Urban Artware (trust me, this isn't a clothing store) and Piedmont Craftsman.

There may still be a dinosaur there.

(Dinosaur courtesy of Sixth and Trade Gallery)

The opinions of this blog entry are representative of it's author's opinion and not that of the website it appears on or the website's owner.

Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved.
