Story from mellyhw

9/11/09
This is my first day as a member of the dothegreenthing family...so I guess this is the beginning of my journey

It started off as a normal day- First I woke up knackered; my boy-friend drove me to my car (which i had left at work the night before so that we would only be using one car this weekend - not a bad start?). I drove home, had breakfast, and begun revising for my college resits in january...(this consists of me writing page after page of notes :S am going to have to get some recycled paper)

Then
As per usual i was soon distracted and so proceeded to go on my laptop. I checked my e-mails and among them was an e-mail from my nan (nanna :) love you) about the mass whale and dolphin massacre that takes place in Denmark. It was disgusting!!!! They make me sick!!

So
I researched this further which lead me to 'The Cove' a movie released this spring directed by Louie Psihoyos that reveals the secret killings of dolphins in Japan. If you do not know about this issue i suggest you find out...it will make you sick, but maybe together we will be influenced enough to do something about it. Both stories made me feel sick!! and made me cry which rarely happens. It has turned out to be an emotional day.

Now
Through 'The Cove' website i found out about Daryl Hannah and her dhlovelife blog...it is now a bookmark on my laptop and will be viewed everyday!! She is my inspiration!! I love her! and that lead me to here...i now vow to try and live my life greener!!

I'm 19 years old and unfortunately still live with my mum (this isn't unfortunate because i don't love her, but because it means i still have to live by her rules :S). However, a few years ago i made my mum get a recycling bin and it is now done vigorously under my supervision. I have my own separate recycle bin in my room too, and i think i may have converted my boy friend :).
There was a phase in my life a few years ago when i would go into every room in the house and turn off every appliance that wasn't being used at that moment in time. This had to stop though as i feared my life after several death threats from every member in my family...ha.
I don't really know what i want to do in life career wise, i'd love to be a pilot (sorry) and am set to study aerospace design engineering at university next year...this isn't very eco-friendly i know :S but i figured i could use the knowledge and skills i gain to create a more world friendly way of flying. Does that now gain your forgiveness? To be realistic there is little chance that people will stop flying and honestly i think this is a good thing because there are too many gorgeous things to be seen in this world and maybe (who knows) experiencing them first hand will cause people to re-think their lifestyles in order to preserve this world!

I think the people who really know me (there are few) would say i was an amateur eco-warrior; i can't boast the determination and success that the likes of Daryl Hannah or the other save the world super-heroes can, but i feel today is the start of something stupendous...today i start my I campaign "converting to save the world...one person at a time"<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/greenthingstories/~4/Xc4CmUE0j-g" height="1" width="1"/>
