based in Scotland.</p><p><span class="inline inline-center"><span class="caption"><strong>Goldstar winner Scottish Seabird Centre, which provides workshops to school children on conservation and environment, has installed a 4.5 KwH PVA, a 1.5KwH wind turbine and a solar hot water panel array.</strong></span></span>The Green Tourism Business Scheme Awards were presented this afternoon in Edinburgh to eight of the UK's most sustainability minded businesses working within the tourism industry.</p><p>According the organisers, the awards "honour those businesses and organisations that have done the most to promote sustainability within the industry by implementing cost-saving practices to help the environment, improve customer services and benefit the bottom line."</p><p>The winners, which include three businesses from England and five from Scotland, were chosen from over 2,400 green tourism companies assessed for their innovation, cost savings and green ambassadorship href="http://www.greentraveller.co.uk/accommodation/wheatland-farm-eco-lodges-and-cottage-devon-uk">Wheatland Farm, Devon</a>, which last night won the Sustainable Tourism Gold Award in the nationwide Visit England Awards.</p><p>Wheatland Farm, which has three secluded self-catering wooden lodges overlooking a Devon wildlife meadow, are let by owners Maggie Watson and Ian Ripper who manage their 21 acres for wildlife, including dormice, barn owls and even British orchids, including Popehouse Moor, a 7-acre Site of Special Scientific Interest.</p><p>The farm is a member of Greentraveller, and has been awarded gold from both the Green Tourism Business Scheme and the Devon Wildlife Trust.</p><p>The farm is powered by 100% renewable energy (thanks to a wind turbine and green grid backup), food waste biodigesters and extensive recycling of glass, metals, plastics, cardboard and waxed cartons. A full year of monitoring confirmed that guests have helped the Farm keep close to 80% of waste out of landfill. To minimise draw on water resources, they have enough water butts for all outside needs including watering the gardens. Also, basins have restricted flows and toilets have reduced flushes. <p>Interlaken is nestled between the alpine lakes Brienz and Thun, and overlooked by the mighty Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. It was originally known as Aarmühle until the name officially changed in 1891. in the UK.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>The adventure tour operator Wilderness Scotland has introduced a new Wilderness Guide Training Programme (WGTP), which it says is the first of its kind in the UK.</p><p><span class="inline inline-center"></span>The programme will be run in partnership with Wild Scotland, the Scottish Wildlife and Adventure Tourism Association – a not-for-profit organisation. The company says "Growing numbers of consumers want to experience wilderness regions and this programme will offer professional outdoor guides best practice training on increasingly important issues. These issues include sustainable tourism, leave no trace awareness and nature conservation, as well as Scottish geology and astronomy.</p><p>"The core benefit of the programme is ultimately that customers have a much more immersive experience as guides are better equipped to interpret the stunning landscapes and diverse cultures they work in."</p><p>Complementing existing technical skills development and coaching qualifications, the WGTP will offer structured and coherent training for professional outdoor guides in the softer skills needed to become a more rounded guide and ensure that customers have a truly memorable experience.</p><p><span class="inline inline-right"></span>Run on an attendance basis, this unique 12-day modular course, spread over three residential blocks, will aim to provide both knowledge and practical skills. There is flexibility for guides to do the courses in any order, and to spread the blocks across two seasons, beginning in April, May or December this year. Th first thing that strikes you is that they're in markedly pristine condition. They're also very well displayed. The museum curators have sensibly opted for a simple 'gallery style hanging' in a well lit room, with minimal labelling, so that the interpretation doesn't get in the way of the artworks themselves.</p><p>To describe these posters as 'artworks' might seem a little pompous from our modern day perspective, but in fact it's entirely appropriate. The jewels in the crown, such as the posters of Terrence Cuneo's Scotland for your Holidays and Henry Gawthorn's picture of the Forth Bridge, are displayed alongside their original oil paintings. After the railway companies merged to create the 'big four' in the 1923, the train companies sought out the most respected artists of the time. Cuneo was one of these. He went to extraordinary lengths to capture the Forth Bridge, camping out on the bridge in all weathers to sketch the scene which he later painted. It's about half-way between Milan and Venice, is surrounded by mountains, often snow-capped, and, thanks to its micro-climate, it is internationally known for its production of olive oil and wine. Popular towns included Bardolino, Malcesine and Brenzone on the eastern shore and Limone, Tremosine, Gargnano and Salò, to the west. this charity cycle ride in Wales stretches all the way from Newport to the Brecon Beacons National Park.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>One of Wales' top family-friendly cycle paths, which stretches all the way from the Brecon Beacons National Park to the coast, is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year.</p><p>To celebrate, cyclists are being invited to enter the <strong>Canal 200 Charity Cycle Ride</strong> on Saturday 19th May and raise money for the Brecon Mountain Rescue Service fund.</p><p><span class="inline inline-center"><span class="caption"><strong>The route is one of the easiest and flattest ways to get from the coast to the Brecon Beacons</strong></span></span></p> <p>Starting in the City of Newport, the trail is around 42 miles in length and follows the scenic Monmouth and Brecon Canal to Brecon’s Canal Basin. Organisers Green Dragon Events are requesting sponsorship to enter, with all money raised going to the Brecon Mountain Rescue Service fund. As one of the flattest and accessible routes leading into the National Park, he trail is suitable for all members of the family, with shorter routes from the popular stopping points of Gilwern and Talybont-on-Usk.</p><p>Serious cyclists can pedal the whole 42 miles from Newport, or 18 miles from Gilwern (both £25 sponsorship per person), or join the shorter 7-mile family ride from Talybont-on-Usk (£10 sponsorship per person). There will be plenty to do and see along the way, with a pit-stop for a ‘bun, beer and banana’ at The Coach & Horses in Llangynidr, as well as a BBQ at Brecon Canal Basin when the ride is over.
