This is a fiberglass tiger patiently waiting in my studio to be painted.
He will be part of The St. Clair Superior Development Corporation Public Art Project, Year of the Tiger. The project celebrates the Chinese Year of the Tiger which began with the new moon February 14, 2010. Thank You to Key Bank for sponsoring my tiger. He will be installed May 19th at Chester and E.36th Street.

I will be hosting an "Open Studio" on December 5, 2009. From 11 am to 8 pm.

There will be other open artist studios in the Tower Press Building and in the surrounding area. This event coincides with the annual ArtCraft Building holiday sale (right down the street). Free parking available behind the Tower Press Building (off of E.21st Street).

Year of the Ox

This is an Ox sculpture, tittled Sunny, that I painted as part of a public art project to celebrate the Chinese zodiac year of the Ox. Twenty one painted Oxen sculptures will be placed throughout the city of Cleveland. The project is organized by the St. Clair Superior Development Corporation (this is the neighborhood in downtown Cleveland where I have my studio).

Charles Hawthorne's Easel

Charles Hawthorne (1872-1930) was an influential American painter who founded the Cape Cod School of Art in 1899 in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The school is still in operation. Hawthorne was considered "a painter's painter" his work was well regarded by fellow artists and widely collected. He has pieces in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Hirshhorn Museum, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Smithsonian and others.

I have received as a gift from my mother Charles Hawthorne’s easel. The easel had been in storage at the Cleveland Museum of Art for a number of years. It was given to my mother by a family friend, whose mother had taken painting lessons from Charles Hawthorne. I’m not sure how she came to acquire the easel from her teacher…I’ll look into it. I am happy be the latest owner of the easel and I hope to paint many paintings using it.

I am hosting my annual open studio this weekend. Saturday, September 20th, 11am to 11pm and Sunday, September 21st, 11am to 5pm. It is a stop on the Sparx Gallery Hop and City Artists at Work Studio Tour.

This is usually a pretty well attended event and a good time. I hope a lot of you can make it!

Here is a small painting I did a couple of months ago. I've been working on a few non-landscape paintings lately. I'll post pics when they're either finished or further along. It seems that several times each year I'm compelled to break away from landscapes and paint something else. I'll do some sketches or a few small studies, but always end up returning to landscapes.

Beetle, hand colored, block prints.

I usually make one or two block prints a year in editions of 20. They are hand pressed and if colored, painted with transparent water colors. These Beetle prints were done a few years ago and I have 4 left (3 colored and 1 black and white). I haven't done one yet this year. I started to carve a block a few months ago (it was to be a dod0 bird) but a slip while carving messed it up beyond repair. I'll get around to carving another block soon.

Here's a little sea scape that I just sold yesterday so I thought I'd post it. I like the thin red line on the horizon. I don't really have much to say about this one - other than I often find it hard to talk about my own work. This is not a good marketing strategy for an artist. I really need to be better at intelligently discussing my work - but it often sounds like so much contrived B.S. when I try to do this. So for now, I'll just let the paintings speak for themselves.

Cosmos, oil on canvas, 20" x 20"

This painting was a long time in the making and had many incarnations. There are many layers built up (it's hard to really see in the picture though). It was sold through a gallery. The buyer later contacted me and we had lunch and talked about art. It was nice to meet her. Often when a painting sells through a gallery or an art dealer I never know who the buyer is, so it's nice when I have the opportunity to meet the person who found a connection with my work.

Skella-Rat
This fiberglass rat sculpture is part of the "Year of the Rat Public art Project." The project is sponsored by the St. Clair Superior Development Corporation here in Cleveland. Skella-Rat was sponsored by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and now sits at the front entrance of the museum greeting visitors.

I painted a second rat sculpture that was sponsored by The Horsburgh and Scott company (for some reason I can't seem to upload a photo of him).

Over the past several years I've been involved with a number of this sort of public art projects. To date I've painted two giant Fender Stratocastor guitars, two dogs, two pigs and now two rats. I've become quite efficient painting over sized fiberglass animals.

I like the way this one turned out. I did the under-painting in a deep alizaron crimson that just peeks out in a few places (although it's not very visible in the photo).

"Suzi" oil on paper

This is a portrait of my brother's old dog, Suzi. This painting is from a photo and was a gift for my brother. Suzi was one well traveled pooch. She lived in Japan, Australia and the US. She passed on to the dog park in the sky several years ago.

Here is my latest. I've worked on this large canvas on and off for a while. I'm pretty sure it's finished, although I might still go back and work into the clouds a bit more. I'll be showing it at The Earth Show Invitational at Ursuline College, Pepper Pike, OH. The opening reception is June 14th. I will be exhibiting six other paintings as well. As for now the painting is untitled, but I do intend to tittle it (I welcome any suggestions).
For some reason I have a hard time thinking of titles. I have some sort of mental block to giving my paintings titles. I have really struggled with it. Whenever I think of what seems like an appropriate title and then look at the painting, I invariably say to myself "no that's not right." It can get very confusing when 90% of my paintings are untitled landscapes. I know galleries and collectors would rather I tittle my work. I've even had galleries give pieces titles, I don't really like it, but I understand it. The region in my brain that paints the picture is definitely not the same part that thinks of titles. Maybe it's a left brain / right brain sort of thing.
