The first day of PAX officially starts today, but day one of GrifballHub’s PAX experience started yesterday. Goose, Tex, Kal and some of their closest grifball pals spent the evening hanging out at Table 219 in Seattle. Joining them was Alison of 343 Industries (the people who produce Halo Waypoint) and DMZilla of Microsoft. It’s safe to say they had a great time.

Before the evening was over, Alison was kind enough to provide the Hub with a bunch of Noble 6 avatar codes, which are all the rage on Twitter right now. Waypoint has been giving them away constantly and now we will be as well. If you’re not yet following GrifballHub on Twitter and would like an opportunity to win an avatar code, simply follow @grifballhub.

Here’s a few photos from GrifballHub’s first day in Seattle. Expect more content throughout the weekend. Goose, Kal and Tex will be doing their best to cover and document as much as they can. You can also follow what the GrifballHub gang is up to on our PAX Page.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or don’t stop by as often as you know you should, you’ve probably heard that Goosechecka and Green Team Tex will be making the trek to PAX in Seattle in just a few short days. Last year GrifballHub was there as part of the first ever grifball panel, along with Burnie Burns of Red vs Blue. This year the Hub will be there as members of the media.

Of course since Goose and Tex will be running around talking to various game vendors, conducting interviews, playing demos, snapping pictures, spending time at industry parties and most importantly hunting down swag to give away, that means they’ll be very active on the GrifballHub Twitter account. We’d like to invite you to join them, even if you’re not the biggest grifball fan. You should be though, seriously.

Here’s the deal. You need to have a Twitter account. If you don’t have one it’s quite painless to sign up. Second, you need to follow this link and Retweet Green Team Tex’s message in order to be entered to win 1,600 Microsoft points. It couldn’t be much easier than that. You have until midnight this Friday, September 3rd. We’ll be keeping track of who follows and retweets Tex’s message and will select a random winner.

It’s important that you not only retweet the message but follow the GrifballHub twitter as well. This is because if you win, we’ll be direct messaging you via Twitter.

Tex’s Message:

Follow @grifballhub and retweet this for a chance to win 1600 microsoft points if we reach 500 followers by #PAX (Friday) #grifballhubpax

This won’t be the only chance you have to win goodies. Keep following the Hub on Twitter throughout the weekend for more chances to win!

Gamertag: Y0ur3AlrdyD3ad

GBSML10 Team: Bad Kidz Anonymous

Position: Trick Runner

1. How many seasons of AGLA Grifball have you played?
This will be my fourth full season besides the one match I played back in SML09 (I don’t wanna talk about it :s).

2. What teams have you played for?
I originally was supposed to make my “debut” with Deadly If Eaten, but I decided to quit and play with a cool cat named The Deepest Sleep (lol) –> Melvin for Operation Infinite Walrus. He was/is a very positive and overall great person while he really needed a starter for playoffs so I jumped to it. I had my massive stereo system on with my xbox balanced on my subs and we’ll just say that hammers cause a lot of bass so that match cost me an xbox and a nice DNF for stats.

I started Bad Kidz Anonymous back in FL09 with the purpose of bringing in unknown matchmaking players to bring upsets to already established players/teams. Things didn’t go as particularly as planned for our first season as our supposed-to-be starters were never available, but we’ve had a good run since then. I’ve kept dedicated to this team and list of players as they’ve given the same dedication as well. I’ve thought about moving on, but I can’t really play/practice from home anymore so I really don’t know if I have the flexibility for pro.

3. What four players would make up your Grifball dream team and why?
Myself, T-Rich, Dane Cook, and a homeless black man constantly repeating “rack em.” Imagine the lolz.

4. What is your best Grifball memory?
My best memories come from late nights of XXP matchmaking. I like to joke around a lot causing a lot of random moments of extreme laughter with the addition of catchy phrases that usually contaminate the Grifball community. A lot of the quotes/phrases/language you hear today comes from those nights.

One person you probably wouldn’t expect to come up in this topic is probably Milk Me. A long while back in a XXP, he had something with him that emitted extremely f’n loud sirens used in hockey games. Every goal we scored, he would play the appropriate horn and it was so loud that everyone on the court would just freeze and wonder wtf that sound was. They didn’t know if it was a new part of the game or what the hell it was coming from. If we scored three straight goals, the hat trick horn was used. I believe there were also effects that sounded like cheers or chants from a “crowd.” My ears were nearly bleeding, but my laughter caused much more internal pain.

Recently Bill Cosby and Snookie have become rather familiar names used around.

5. Which Grifball team do you think is most underrated?
Honestly, us (Bad Kidz Anonymous). Just because our unfamiliar names aren’t on the cover of Try Hard Monthly, doesn’t mean they’re not good. If you’ve ever played a bit more seriously with our teammates, they may have you reaching for that bottle of ragesauce.

6. What skill do you think is most important in Grifball?
You can accomplish being a legitimate tank, runner, hybrid, waste of space, etc all you want. The ability(ies) to both be unpredictable and read your opponents is/are that frosting to the cake. If you can read or manipulate actions by an opponent along with high awareness, you’ll be able to accomplish anything in the game of Grifball.

A lot of pro-caliber players can usually at least narrow down possibilities of your next course of action when you’re playing which is why I also include being unpredictable. Being unconventional and being an idiot are not the same thing.

7. If you were commissioner, what would your first official action be?
Fix my computer……………………………if it were to break.

8. If you could offer any advice to rookie players, what would it be?
-Don’t get trolled.
- Realize that you thinking you’re good and others thinking you are good are two completely different concepts.
-Look at Herty as an example of how not to be.
-Self-launching is not a betrayal attempt.
-There really is a radar down over there
<------------------------

9. What would you like to see from Grifball in Reach?
Halo 3 physics! Being realistic, I don’t have much for expectations from Reach for the Grifball world. Sure there are armor abilities and other neato snazzy options etc we could use, but the physics rather than the pure decrease in gravity allowed for tricks and moves that were created and used having full control over by player ability and skill. These moves/tricks that we were once able to do also separated the game from being so directly related with “connection.”

It sounds like Grifball is going to pretty much be a ground game from here on out with regards to actual league play so I think the vertical element which truly made it a “3D” or even faster paced game type might soon be a thing of the past unfortunately. Swords seem pretty much useless at this point as well so sadly, things aren’t looking very interesting for me.

10. Other than Grifball, what are you looking forward to most about Reach?
After the original Halo, I became less and less attracted to the title/series. When I get into a game, I’m generally looking for/asking myself two things. Is this game somewhat realistic? Is this game based on strategy and/or team-based?

I unfortunately don’t find it very entertaining for everyone to have to take so much damage to kill. Before, every weapon seemed like a legitimate source of death. Halo 3 is about who can get their BR first. When “SWAT” evolved, I gave this type a shot as well since it appeared to combat my dislike(s). I don’t know if it is maturity or what it is, but I also just got bored finding it way too easy to snipe being there is no gravity nor natural breathing. I moved on…

I do see that Reach seems to take a step back giving more humanistic attributes to characters so I may give it a shot (or two…lol?nvm) This being said, I will overall be looking for a more realistic approach more relating to today’s standards. If this can be done, Reach has my attention.

Are there any other comments you would like to include?
“I apologize for typos, etc. I did this after I got home from some overtime.
oh yah and….
Bill Cosby slaps Jello passionately…..while politely asking “”y so guud snookie?”"”

Gamertag: ActiveHate

GBSML10 Team: Grifindor

Position: Tank

1. How many seasons of AGLA Grifball have you played?
GBFL09, GBWL10, GBSL10, GBSML10

2. What teams have you played for?
Guilty Sparks – 1 Season Amateur
Power Outage – 2 Seasons Pro
Grifindor – 1 Season Pro

3. What four players would make up your Grifball dream team and why?
Well it’s a shame I wasn’t around when most of the popular players still played because I don’t know how they stack up to todays players. However If I could choose any 4 players I would have 2 teams in mind.

Twizzted Status, T Rich Da King, v Determined v, xO pie xO.

Reason: Twizzted Status is hands down the best runner in the league. I haven’t seen anyone who is better at controlling the ball then Twizzted. He is also a great defensive player. T Rich Da King is more than just a tank he’s a one man army. He has the best opening flowers in the league along with his superior tanking skill. Not to mention he also has the ability to run the ball and play defense. v Determined v is becoming one of the most dominant tanks in the league since these past few seasons. His skills aren’t just confined to going massively positive either. He’s just simply a jack of all trades in the Grifball league. xO pie xO is probably the most clutch defensive player I’ve ever witnessed. He has the ability to turn on a dime and stop a runner just inches before the goal. While other players also have this skill xO pie xO can also fill the role of a solid tank while most of the others lack in that area.

REDBARON225, H20 InsaneHobo, v Determined v, ActiveHate

Reason: I think that this would just be a fun team to play on myself. It’s all about the K/D and you can’t have a team like that without RedBaron. He’s famous for putting up those huge numbers when it comes down to stats. If H20 InsaneHobo played like he has a few seasons ago where he actually was comparable to RedBaron then he would be one of the best tanks in the league today. His ability to hammer lunge was straight up ridiculous it almost wasn’t even fair. I’ve already explained the reasons for v Determined v. He was one of the main reasons I was looking into joining his team a few seasons back when they needed players. Last but not least I put myself on this roster. Even though I’m sure there are plenty of others who would play better on a team like this.

4. What is your best Grifball memory?
Playing with people like bred4war23, Priest XYZ, oDime, myjspec, and CloakingVEGETA since that’s where it all started in the first place and it’s how I became involved in the league. I used to play quite a bit with bred4war23 and Str8 Toxic in matchmaking before I even joined the league in FL09. Eventually I met the Guilty Sparks in matchmaking and joined their team. I didn’t expect to make playoffs that season but we did so I was satisfied. Even after the fact the we lost 6-3 to Deadly If Eaten in the first round because they refused to Neutral Host.

5. Which Grifball team do you think is most underrated?
This is a hard question to answer…

Pro League: Kaz myrickoni and Tad now with more Lambchop!
I’ve never played these guys in a league game so I have no idea what they are capable of. However I have played custom games with their entire starting lineup. They seem like a fairly solid team even though they probably wouldn’t be recognized as a contender by some teams.

Amateur League: Bad Kidz Anonymous
With the way this team has been playing lately I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up shocking everyone and take the amateur championship this season. I see new talent in this team much like the former member of Trippin Ballz, bred4war23.

6. What skill do you think is most important in Grifball?
As a runner your priority should be to keep the ball in your possession at all costs. Making smart decisions and being able to spot the precise moment in which to score becomes crucial in competitive games.

As a tank your objective is to get the runner to the pad. Being able to communicate with other tanks on your team and tank as a group is what it all boils down to. Your leader should be able to tell one of you to tank down the middle and the other 2 to tank against right or left side and you should be able to execute that formation flawlessly.

7. If you were commissioner, what would your first official action be?
I would allow teams to trade players much like sports teams are able to do. The rule I dislike most about Grifball is that once you’ve played a game then you’re roster locked to that team until the season ends. Sometimes the team you’re playing for just isn’t what you expected and it’s too late to change your mind. I know when I played on Power Outage it wasn’t what I expected even though I stayed with them for 2 seasons. We also became a forfeit factory in SL10 even though I still wanted to play. If I was able to I would have just went down to an amateur team or played for a different pro team that needed help.

8. If you could offer any advice to rookie players, what would it be?
Get involved with the community whether it be on the forums, in pickup games or whatever. Grifball is a lot more enjoyable when you actually take the initiative to do these things. Getting to know the players and teams is important as well. If people know who you are you will get some recognition instead of being just a random player that no ones heard about. Last but not least I would say don’t be a douche. There are some things that are acceptable and others that aren’t in this community. Knowing the difference between the two will help you become successful and earn you a reputation in the league.

9. What would you like to see from Grifball in Reach?
I just can’t wait to see the maps that will be unveiled by runNOKYARDrun and other community members. It will be exciting to see what they are able to create with the more advanced forging options they will have at their disposal. I would also like to see the league expand and flourish after the release of Reach.

10. Other than Grifball, what are you looking forward to most about Reach?
I would have to say forge hands down for sure. What they created looks spectacular in the video and I know I’ll be spending countless hours simply playing with the new tools and options they are allowing us to use.

I’m also looking forward to seeing the changes it imposes on Grifball and if we will ever see a permanent social playlist. I wouldn’t care if it awarded absolutely no experience because I would simply play it when pickup games weren’t available and when I want to meet new players.

Castlevania is typically a game that’s ahead of its time. It’s hard for an XBLA game to fill that roll, but once again Castlevania has risen to the occasion. Castlevania Harmony of Despair (Or Castlevania HD) combines the reminiscent feeling of the hack-n-slash, RPG and loot farming with a brand new feature….6 player co-op. That’s right, you can have 6 Heroes in the game at the same time. It’s obviously not SotN (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is regarded as one of the best games ever), however it has its own charm and allure. you get to play as one of six characters from previous titles. These characters include:

Soma Cruz (from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow)
Alucard (from Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Castlevania Legends, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and Castlevania: Judgment), Jonathan Morris (from Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin)
Shanoa (from Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia)
Charlotte Aulin (from Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin)

Each character offers a different play-style to suit you better. From full on frontline assault of Alucard to the distant punishment of spell-casting with Charlotte, you can find a character the suits you. There are not levels in this game per se, but you can level up skills and spells. This, aside with farming bosses and monsters for certain pieces of armor can consume quiet a bit of time. I have spent 30 hours alone on one character and have not got all the gear I wanted. You definitely will get your moneys worth on this title.

Castlevania HD offers several flashbacks to previous game bosses from the Castlevania series. Each of the 6 levels offers a maze-like maps that you have to go through to get to the boss and some levels require you figuring out puzzles to continue. Castlevania holds true to its original graphics that you have come to love. Whats unique to Castlevania HD is that you can see the map in its entirety (with the exception of secret rooms). You can see every enemy and treasure chest. In fact, in multiplayer, you spawn in different corners of the map and work together to get to the boss.

In Castlevania HD, you don’t have any dialogue depicting an epic tale. It’s simply that Dracula’s Castle has returned once more which means Dracula will arise and prey on the innocent unless the castle is defeated. Lack of storyline makes this game straight forward and does not hinder it. The game offers enough entertainment in loot farming and skill leveling to keep you loading it up. After you defeat the six stages, you unlock a “Hard” mode. Hard mode holds true to its name. With Hard mode, you almost have to have two or more people to compete with the powerful bosses.

I will now breakdown the major components in the game and give them a numerical rating from 0-10 (0 being horrible to 10 being perfection).

Presentation: 8.5

Castlevania HD offers an amazing fully loaded map which you can skim ahead and plan your route. It’s nice to see that it does not need loading from one section to the next. It offers three views: Close up, mid, and fully panned out to view the entire map. I highly recommend trying to play on one of the latter to allow you to see more and appreciate the game a bit more.

Graphics: 8.0

It’s graphical scene might hold a warm place in the retro gamer’s heart, as it looks like the previous games in the Castlevania series. In light of that, the texture is warm and rich. The colors are very vivid and looks like a retouched Castlevania: SotN.

Sound: 9.5

When I think of Castlevania titles, I think of the amazing music. Castlevania HD has music from all the previous games. Sure it might not be new, but the music is still epic and amazing.

Gameplay: 9.0

A really impressive evolution of the series, it holds the exact same feeling of previous titles and adds the excitement of Co-op and the different view layout. I also like the leveling of skills rather than the individual. “Skilling up” isn’t that long and not too tedious. Sure the bosses can be tough sometimes, but skills and your own personal skill of handling the character can really be rewarding when you solo a Hard Dracula.

Replayability: 9.0

With 6 characters to power up, and hundreds upon hundreds of items you can get, Castlevania HD will have you coming back for more. Also DLC has been promised with more character and possibly more levels.

Overall: 8.75

If you have friends that have this game it can easily push it up to a 9. However, soloing is a bit less fun to me. Thank goodness Castlevania HD has a matchmaking option where you can team up with random people. I say this game is priced right at 1200 points and is well worth it if you are a fan of the Castlevania series.

GBSML10 Team: Thank Us Later, Pro League

Position: Tank

1. How many seasons of AGLA Grifball have you played?
Since Winter League ’08, so 10 I believe.

2. What teams have you played for?
Who haven’t I played for is a better question. Most recently though <3, DOK, and now Thank Us Later.

3. What four players would make up your Grifball dream team and why?
Definitely myself, Twizzter, TRich, and TnT. Probably my favorite Grifball nubbs.

4. What is your best Grifball memory?
So many to name. Probably the most satisfying though came from SL08 where we 9-0′d RAC’s team (forget the name) who had 5-4′d us a couple weeks earlier. The satisfying part came from the fact that our records were tied at the time and whoever won made playoffs, while the other didn’t. Recently though I’d have to go with winning the championship last season.

5. Which Grifball team do you think is most underrated?
I’d say Team USA is pretty underrated. They have some strong tanks and a pretty good runner in BCK. I really wouldn’t be surprised to see them take the divsion back from Mario Party.

6. What skill do you think is most important in Grifball?
Definitely decision making. You need to be able to think on the fly during games. Grifball itself is a relatively simple game to play, but in order to excel as a team you need to think outside the box a little. Positioning and prediction are also pretty important skills to master.

7. If you were commissioner, what would your first official action be?
Hard to say. Probably a restructuring of the administration, it still feels a little understaffed to me.

8. If you could offer any advice to rookie players, what would it be?
Don’t get frustrated with the game. There’s really no point in doing so and you won’t learn anything from it. Instead try to be patient and look at what you’re doing right and what you need to work on.

9. What would you like to see from Grifball in Reach?
Hard to say. I guess I’d like something relatively similar to the current Grifball, but I recognize we may have to change the gametype quite a bit, which is something I’m open to.

10. Other than Grifball, what are you looking forward to most about Reach?
I’m looking forward to every aspect of Reach really. If I had to pick one though I’d say Campaign, which they keep saying they tried to make like Halo 1. Should be interesting. Other than that I’d say Forge comes next in order of interest.

Are there any other comments you would like to include?
Gutsy Oscar for the repeat, as well as worst gamertag change ever.

How often have you gone out to eat with some friends, and half the time is spent using Facebook on your phone? How often have you texted the person that is in the same place as you? Technology is great and allows us to keep in touch with people we have not seen or heard from in a long time. However, is it dissolving our skills of “actual” human interaction?

Facebook offers a great way to keep tab on all your friends, share your ideas, or just chat away. However you will notice a lot of people use it to communicate everything. Even roommates facebook each other instead of simply going to them and talking to them (I am guilty of this as well). With all this easy exposure to be able to “network” with friends, people become too comfortable with using it as a medium. We get lazy and rely on status posting, or wall commenting to convey our thoughts or conversations.

Twitter is essentially a public forum via your phone. You are not directly texting someone, but posting it in a broad spectrum to allow all friends to chime in on your conversation. For those who follow me, you know Greenhorn and I can get into sports on Twitter. Instead of calling him, or hanging out with him at a venue, we tweet.

Texting is probably the biggest IRL social interaction killer of them all. If we are not comfortable talking about a subject, we text it instead. Sometimes we are too lazy to get up and go tell our roommate we want to grab something to eat, so we text it. Texting has become a part of everyone’s everyday life. It is essential for us to communicate, but like the examples above, we may be relying on it far too much. It could spin out of control into monstrous proportions.

Technology is what makes life easier. Technology in itself is not a bad thing at all, but the overuse of it could have irreparable affects in the long run. We could be teaching a generation that is better to communicate behind the safety of a non-personal venue, as opposed to face-to-face. Key example is XBL. On XBL, how often are you horribly berated? Do you think these same people would say this to you in person? Our dependency on technology could be causing a generation to develop without any personal skills other then how well they can blog, or how fast they can tweet.

Here at GrifballHUB’s Good Games League, we have a number one rule: Have fun! We have some other basic rules to encourage fair play, but for the most part our guiding principle has been “Anything goes, as long as everyone has a good time.”

For Reach, we’re taking that idea and running with it.

We’re all excited for the release of Reach next month. The GrifballHUB team will be on the ground at PAX, looking for the inside scoop on the next game in the Halo series. The community at large will soon be moving on to the next generation of shooters, and it’s obvious that Grifball will have to evolve, too.

Once Reach launches, GrifballHUB will continue to be your online resource center for all things Grifball. We will release a basic, vanilla Grifball map and gametype for Reach. The game will still be Grifball at the core, which means:

Assault

Swords and Hammers with unlimited ammo and no weapon pick-up

Two teams

Nine rounds

One point per round

No time limit

But we will also host a collection of community-made maps and gametypes and let you rate and comment on each one. Want to build a court under, on, or over Forge World? Want to try Grifball with double the speed? Want to throw in jetpacks and holograms? Knock yourselves out! We’ll link to your variants and let the community try them out and rate them.

Best of all, the next season of the GGL will take place exclusively in Reach. As long as both team captains agree on the settings, teams will be allowed to use any Grifball map and gametype, from our plain vanilla version to the most complex forge creations. The GGL will be a giant, structured testing ground for Grifball in Reach. Throughout the season we’ll be asking for your feedback: Which maps and gametypes are best for competitive Grifball? Which are best for practice? And which are best for plain old lolzy fun?

By the end of the season, we hope that the best maps and gametypes will rise to the top and we’ll have a great collection of high quality Grifball variants.

Unfortunately, with our hands full dealing with Reach, our beloved Achieveables will be pushed to the wayside next season. Don’t worry, though–Much like Frosty, they’ll be back again some day.

Look for more news about the GGL — including signup information — as we get closer to the release date for Reach. The league will be starting at the end of September — But get your teams ready; Reach will be here before you know it!

Over 60,000 people attended PAX Prime last year and even more gamers are expected to attend this year. Traveling to an unfamiliar city, being surrounded by hordes of strangers and navigating over 300,000 sq ft of convention center floor can seem like an intimidating or overwhelming task. In an effort to make first-time PAX goers feel more secure, Grifballhub – in collaboration with Nuclear Taco Productions – has created the Top 10 Things Not to Do at PAX video. This is the Hub’s first foray into machinima, so we hope that you enjoy!
