What does catching up with home look like?

Daughter 1: pull out the new higher res computer camera we picked up in the next country over and start her next stop motion animation series. “Look at how clear it is mom!” she says while dreaming up the next claymation.

Daughter 2: before entering her own home she’s off to find the furry critters that consider her their own pet. She’s located the important ones with names and a few others besides. Her creativity explodes into a whole new “build them a home” project. She’s going to be outside attending to and sharing the joy of it for some time yet. It’s cold and wet and with a couple neighbor friends who also like such cuddly things there’s some warm hearts despite the drip.

Daughter 3: bounces from room to room in the house, playing her new clay pipe with gusto until she’s told to take it outside. At which point she looks for anything but that, and ends up in the bathtub. Some time later she’s crying that strange stuff is in the tub and it’s not toys dad! Get it out!!! (It’s the dirt she’s been wearing and she doesn’t want it near her in the tub…) She bounces out to shiver near the heater, dresses, then joins the purring fur club outside till she’s shivering again. She’s coloring pictures of puppies now in her bedroom.

Mom and Dad: enjoy a cup of french press coffee and talk with few interruptions processing the momentous day and the preceding. A few sighs and a general, “let the hair down” cloud floats their way and is welcomed after 4 days in a guest house where your every move affects those around you. It was nice and all but there’s no place like home.

Ginger: (thats mom in this scenario) then moves into a read blogs, check-in on FB and chillax mode. Her shoes are drying and she’s dreaming of the hike tomorrow morning. A ‘not for the faint hearted’ experience last weekend.

Tim: (that’s dad in this scenario) unpacks the backpack and sets to scanning documents, sending email and digging into search data on a couple of his websites. There’s some FB in there and hey look – he’s writing a blog post!

So, what does your heart good when you’ve just landed back home after pent up tensions and questions find some level of resolve? What kinds of activities help put your feet back on the ground as you process and prepare for what’s directly ahead?

2. In seconds they are lured into the endless world of LOL Cats
3. Minutes later they are asking to save the entire collection of photos so they look at these “oh so cuuuute kittens!!”
4. Hours later they are quoting and describing the adorable fuzzy critters… after lights out time

Oh, so that is what the internet is for!
