Last weekend, Autumn and I shot rudy and Christian’s wedding at Wesleyan College. It was a beautiful, sunny, spring day — perfect for the nuptials of this young couple. Congratulations, you two. May your life together be long and lovely.

Crossroads: Ad Hudler

This year’s Crossroads Writers Conference was fantastic. I was honored to be the official photographer. Not only did I get to see old friends, like Ad Hudler, but I made new ones, like Jack McDevitt. Thanks to Chris and Heather and all of the other Crossroads folks for asking me to participate again. It was awesome. My only regret is that I couldn’t photograph every event.

Anna Needs a New Home

Friends, we are having some difficulty at home. Actually, to be more accurate, the trouble has been going on for a while, but we’ve been doing our best to correct it.

My cat Apollo has been pretty brutally attacking my other cat Anna. For those of you who know Anna, you know she’s a sweetheart. She loves attention from everyone — she thinks she’s people. I’ve had Anna for nearly 15 years; I adopted her from Bishop Animal Shelter in Bradenton, Florida, when I was going through some changes in my life. She and I got through those difficult times together, and it was only us for a number of years. She’s been a big part of my adult life, and it breaks my heart that I need to find another home for her.

I’ve tried everything to help Apollo and Anna get along, but it appears the situation is beyond me. I have to keep them separated at all times, and neither is very happy because of it. It’s not fair to them, and it’s not fair to Autumn and me.

So I’m asking my friends and family to help me find a new home for Anna. She probably doesn’t have too many more years left, and I want those to be with someone who will care for her and give her the attention and love she deserves. If any of you think you could find a bit of room for dear Anna, please let me know. Or, if you know of anyone who might like an older kitty, please let me know. Or, if you have a solution that hasn’t occurred to me, please let me know.

Write It Do It 2010

Today was the regional Science Olympiad at Macon State College. Chris asked David and I — as he usually does — to facilitate and judge the “Write It Do It” competition. Basically, we make a crazy model out of craft stuff. One group of students does their best to describe the object and write instructions on how to reproduce it from the raw parts. The second group of students — you guessed it — builds the object. David and I then judge the final product by look-and-feel and other specific details.

I think this year we made it a bit too easy, since most of the teams did well. Check out my gallery of writers and doers.

I shot all the photos today with my Canon 5D and 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS lens.

Yesterday began very cold and bleak. It was in the twenties as I made my way to Panera for some morning reading and coffee. I remember thinking that the morning’s freezing haze might be a bad thing for our scheduled afternoon engagement shoot with Rudy and Christian. By the time 2pm rolled around, the clouds were beginning to show some blue and the sun was emerging from the gloom.

We began in Washington Park before moving to Mercer Law School. Even though it was cold, I think we managed to get some great shots (gallery link on left). Congratulations to Christian and Rudy; I look forward to your wedding in March. Let’s hope we have good weather.

Rise with Honor

As my wife said: we had “our first metal band photoshoot (RWH!!)” today. My brother-in-law’s band Rise with Honor needed some band shots, and I think if I didn’t offer my services, Cason would have bothered me for the rest of my life. The day was frakin’ cold, but we made the most of it downtown and got a few good shots. Next time, guys, we’ll be sure to get some shots with your hands out of your pockets. Rock on!

Chloe’s Birthday

On Saturday, Autumn and I photographed Chloe’s first birthday party. You might remember the adorable Chloe from our first session with her earlier in the year. She is still an excellent subject — very personable and photogenic. She is a pleasure to work with, and I think we got some great stuff from the party.

Marshall and Leavell

On Friday night, I was asked by the Historic Macon Foundation to photograph a party being thrown by Chuck Leavell at his estate, 20 miles southwest of Macon. The party seemed to go well, and our local congressman Jim Marshall was one of the guests. Chuck was a very gracious host, and everyone seemed to have a great time. Thanks to Josh Rogers, the Foundation’s Executive Director, for asking me to be a part of it.

Conference in D.C.

The recent Norman Mailer Society conference was held last weekend in Washington D.C. Not only did I present a paper, but I was one of two official photographers. The weather was not great, so my outside shots are a bit dull because of the overcast sky. However, the room at the Members’ Room of the Library of Congress provided a pretty good backdrop for portraits.

The photo here is of the National Mall, just in front of the capitol. It’s by no means the best of the lot, but I like it. Be sure to check out the rest of the gallery (link on left).
