Evolving from a red, sticky jelly used by soldiers in WWII to the myriad creams, lotions, and sprays we use today, sunscreen is vital to ensuring the skin’s short-term radiance doesn’t result in long-term damage. But to understand how it works, it’s important to understand the enemy. The sun emits UV radiation in three forms: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA radiation deeply penetrates skin, potentially causing cancer and premature aging in the long term. UVB radiation’s effects are easier to see, namely the tans and sunburns it causes on the skin’s outer layer. UVC rays, meanwhile, never reach our skin; they’re completely absorbed by the earth’s atmosphere, making them a danger only to sunbathing angels.

Sunscreen comes in two types, each suited to protect against certain rays. The classic concoction of thick, white ooze is made of inorganic particles, such as zinc oxide or titanium oxide, that reflect and scatter the UVB rays most likely to cause a sunburn. But these particles don’t protect against deeper-penetrating UVA rays, so scientists have developed sunscreens with synthesized organic molecules that absorb the radiation entirely and release the excess energy as heat. Dermatologists recommend choosing a sunscreen that filters both wavelengths of radiation—labeled as broad spectrum—to ensure full protection.

As for the infamous SPF rating, most people apply less than the recommended amount of lotion, so choose an SPF of at least 30. Anything over 50, however, is likely excessive—unless you’re trapped inside a nuclear-fusion reactor, in which case you’ll want SPF 80.

Atlanta-NFL Alumni Hero Youth Football Camp

This summer, kids aged 6–14 can learn the game of football from the guys who know it best. USA Football Certified Coaches team up with Atlanta Falcon Alumni and NFL Alumni Heroes such as Major Everett, Louis Breeden, Rod Coleman, Ira Hillary, and Ickey Woods at the five-day camps, which unfold at several locations across the Atlanta area in July. Cuticles: Defending Your Digits

Cuticles form an occasionally contested border between skin and nail. Learn how nail technicians can safely get them into good condition with Groupon’s investigation.

No one pays much attention to cuticles until they start causing trouble. Either they grow thick enough to intrude on a uniform manicure or they tear and cause pain. But the clingy strips of skin at the bottom of each nail actually perform some important functions. First, cuticles act as protective barriers that help new keratin cells grow into long, healthy nails instead of short, creepy talons. Second, they help keep bacteria out of the nail bed, where it can cause painful infections.

Though some nail salons offer to trim your cuticles during a manicure, the risk of infection—even with properly sanitized instruments—may outweigh any aesthetic benefit. After all, cuticles will grow back no matter what, so even a temporarily neater line at the base of the nail is unlikely to last for more than a few days. But nail technicians do have ways of fashioning smooth ovals or almond shapes without exposing the nail to dangerous intruders. First, they’ll avoid tearing the skin by making sure it’s as soft and supple as possible. An intensive moisturizer will help, as will a soak in a bowl of warm water. Once the hands are well-conditioned, the tech will begin carefully, gently working with a cuticle stick, first pushing the cuticles back and then, with a tiny circular motion, buffing away any dead skin remnants and dried-on cupcake frosting still clinging to the nail.

In 2012, a Harris Interactive poll reported, one out of five US adults had a tattoo—and 14% of those polled wished they could take it back. Through laser tattoo removal, they might be able to do just that. The job of a laser system configured to fade tattoos is essentially to make the tiny granules implanted by the tattoo needle beneath the skin even smaller. During removal, the device emits short pulses of light whose wavelength is calibrated to be absorbed only by certain colors. The ink absorbs the energy from this light, heats up, and breaks down into fragments small enough to be escorted away by the immune system’s tiny bodyguards.

Certain pigment colors are easier to remove than others: black pigment is the easiest to remove because it absorbs all laser wavelengths, whereas yellow is one of the most difficult because it only absorbs a very specific wavelength. The tattoo’s location also affects how completely it can be removed: tattoos closer to the heart benefit from rapid blood flow that can quickly carry away ink fragments and sad memories.

In the decades before lasers, the main option for removing tattoos was simply abrading the skin, which always carried a risk of scarring. Further back, centuries-old historical accounts discuss a diverse array of removal tactics, from covering skin with saltpeter and turpentine in ancient Alexandria to stretching the tattoo while rubbing it with green corn juice among the North American Chickasaw people. In the future, all tattoos may be more temporary: new tattoo inks are being developed that encapsulate the pigment particles in microscopic beads designed to easily rupture under a single laser pulse. For now, however, multiple treatment sessions are almost always necessary.

Callaway Gardens also offers visitors a number of ways to connect with nature: watch raptors in flight during daily Birds of Prey shows, marvel at more than 1,000 butterflies flitting around the conservatory, and see seasonal plant displays (including regional college-football mascots) in the horticultural center. Kids will enjoy Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari Park, a drive-thru safari home to lions, tigers, monkeys, and giraffes.
