LED Light Bulbs: Beacons of the Future

LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs first popped on in the late 1960s. They’ve been illuminating traffic lights, remote controls, computers, and Christmas trees, to name a few applications. But as the worldwide conversation about lighting has turned toward lowering energy consumption, they’ve begun to shine much more brightly. Incandescent bulbs—long the standard in the US, although a 2014 ban on most production is changing that—use most of their energy input to create heat; fluorescent bulbs are cooler and more energy efficient, but require toxic mercury to function and are more difficult to spell. LED lights require minimal energy input and no mercury to function—only about 30–60 milliwatts and roughly 1 square millimeter of semiconducting material.

This semiconductor (the diode part of an LED) has two layers, one of an electron-rich material and one of an electron-deficient material. This polarity makes it easy for an electromagnetic current to flow in one direction only. The reaction also releases light in only one specific direction, which is both a positive and a negative attribute. It’s positive because it helps boost the bulb’s efficiency, pointing light where it’s needed instead of everywhere. On the other hand, it’s been difficult for engineers to make LEDs bright enough to viably replace standard 60-watt bulbs. To maximize their output, most LED bulbs are lined with reflective material that amplifies the light and shoots it in the desired direction.

More futuristic developments are on the horizon. The future of lighting may lie in organic LEDs, which use carbon-based materials to create a thin, flexible diode that produces light even more efficiently than traditional LEDs (although with a much shorter lifespan, currently). Technology is being developed that will allow organic LED arrays to be printed using ink-jet technology, placed on curved or flexible surfaces such as a placemat you want to watch movies on, and even embedded in windows and windshields.

Laser tag and paintball are both pulse-pounding tactical games, but for those who thrill at the idea of replicating a military experience, space-age laser guns or splotches of neon color might pose a distraction. Airsoft uses weapons that have the look and weight of military guns, and they fire plastic, often biodegradable, pellets as players dodge enemy fire and strive to be the last person standing. Matches range from capture-the-flag scenarios to single-combat contests, any of which may send players ducking behind obstacles such as giant barrels, fortress walls, and ancient school-bus burial grounds. Outside recreational matches, airsoft guns can also be seen at historical reenactments as a safer alternative to authentic antique weaponry. Because the pellets can sting upon contact, combatants wear goggles or full-face masks and, often, thick or padded clothing that covers exposed skin.

Airsoft clearly owes a lot to military technology and tactics, but the exchange has gone the other way as well. Beginning in 2009, the US Army picked up on the trend and began to test airsoft as an alternative to the laser beams and paintball pellets it had used for tactical training in the past. Battalion leaders found that the pellets gave members of their units a more realistic sense of when they were actually being hit. Although paintballs can cause a similar effect, they’re more expensive; it can cost significantly more money to outfit replica weaponry for paintballs as well.

Climbing Chalk: Getting a Better Grip

Whether it’s a hot day or whether your palms have their own sprinkler system, wet hands make climbing trickier. Here, Groupon shares a few good ways to keep things from getting slippery.

Working out is a sweaty business, and the palms of your hands aren’t spared. But having slippery fingers can be dangerous when you’re hanging from the side of a rockface or climbing at the higher elevations of your gym’s walls. In the 1950s, John Gill improved climbing-safety forever by drawing on his background as a gymnast and introducing chalk to rock climbing. Magnesium carbonate—the same stuff that keeps gymnasts gripping the balance beam and bars—worked like a charm then, and today has evolved into an essential part of most climbers’ gear and Hopscotch parties.

Climbing chalk now comes in four forms: blocks, powder, balls, and liquid. The first three generally are stored in a chalk bag that hangs from a climber’s harness and makes it easy to dip hands in whenever you want to add another layer or draw a ghost on a boulder. Some brands even add an extra drying agent to give it a boost.

Although many climbers won’t attempt an ascent without chalk, some indoor-climbing gyms don’t allow the use of traditional chalk because of the way it clouds the air. That’s where liquid chalk comes in, an alcohol-based spray or gel that dries into a chalky, white layer without becoming airborne. And manufacturers haven’t stopped innovating there. Other products now on the market include chalks that are tinted so as to leave no trace on rocks or even blended with aromatherapeutic scents meant to increase focus.

A cooked noodle bends because it’s saturated with water. On the other hand, a uncooked noodle is dry and brittle, making it easy to snap in half. The same principle applies to skin—well-moisturized skin is flexible and resilient, whereas dry skin is prone to structural damage. Beyond moisturizing, however, skin relies on two molecules—more specifically, two proteins—to maintain its youthful appearance: collagen and elastin. The most abundant protein in the animal kingdom, collagen helps tissues withstand stretching, resulting in plump, durable skin. Elastin, meanwhile, helps tissues stretch in the first place, forming bundles of elastic fibers that make the skin strong and flexible. Working in tandem, these two proteins give skin a taut, voluminous quality that’s prized among hot-air balloons. Even healthy skin is no match for nature, however. Factors such as aging and sun damage can drain the skin’s moisture and weaken its proteins, sapping it of its youth and vigor.

Although it’s impossible to actually reverse time, it is possible to regenerate the proteins that make skin look young through a small act of deception. Treatments such as laser or radiofrequency resurfacing and microdermabrasion facials trick the skin into thinking it needs to repair a wound, in which case it amps up collagen and elastin production to rebuild the “damaged” foundation, resulting in an even stronger foundation than before. Topical agents such as retinol creams and plant-based acids also encourage cell synthesis, and as always, staying hydrated is vital to helping your face resist wrinkles and keep from shriveling back into a sponge capsule.
