Mackinac Island, Michigan: Quaint Island with Historic Attractions on Lake Huron

One of the first things you’ll notice when you arrive on Michigan’s Mackinac Island is the absence of cars—they’ve been banned since 1898. It’s part of the isle’s Victorian charm and a major draw for visitors as well as the island’s 500 permanent residents. Nestled in the strait between Michigan’s lower and upper peninsulas, Mackinac Island (pronounced “MACK-in-awe”) looks like a postcard from another century, replete with pastel-hued Victorian mansions and horse-drawn carriages. The island was formerly a fur-trading and fishing outpost before it reinvented itself in the mid-19th century as a summer resort for the well heeled.

It’s incredibly scenic, too. Roughly 80% of the island is considered Mackinac Island State Park—America’s second national park, after Yellowstone (though the park was eventually handed back to the state of Michigan). More than 70 miles of hiking trails thread through stunning boreal forest here, and a popular 8-mile bicycle path called Lake Shore Boulevard circles the island. Along the route, you’ll see one of the island’s most photographed icons, Arch Rock. The limestone formation soars nearly 150 feet into the air and offers sweeping views of Lake Huron.

You can soak in some of the island’s history at Fort Mackinac, the first American military outpost captured by the British in the War of 1812. Grab a seat near the Parade Ground, a large open field in the center of the fort, to see soldiers dressed in period garb march in formation and fire off their rifles.

No trip to Mackinac is complete without sampling some of the island’s famous fudge from one of the 15 candy shops on Main Street. Inside several of the shops, the fudge-making process is a spectator sport. Confectioners use a hand paddle to push and flip the molten chocolate on cool marble slabs until it hardens into a solid loaf of fudge.

A massage can already be a vulnerable experience, so the question of how much pressure the therapist should apply can be tough to answer, especially given that everyone experiences pressure differently. Fortunately, there are basically three possible responses—light, medium, or firm—and considering the following factors may help you decide: 

Pain Tolerance: If you find yourself extremely sensitive to touch, request light pressure. Likewise, people who can tolerate rigorous—possibly even uncomfortable—pressure should choose firm to get the most out of the muscle manipulation. Always trust your body; if firm pressure feels too intense, ask the therapist to ease up.

Touchscreens: Power at Your Fingertips

Most electronic touchscreens—such as the kind on your smartphone, perhaps—rely on electricity. Not just the obvious electricity provided by their power supply, but your electricity, as in the tiny amount that runs through your body or the large amount that runs through your body if you’re a Frankenstein. Capacitive touchscreens are set up to detect any change in the electromagnetic field they produce, such as that created by a bare fingertip. Beneath the glass screen, a network of electrodes stands ready to relay information about the location of the touch to the device’s microcontrollers and translate it into a command.

Another Path: Resistance

There is another, slightly older form of touchscreen technology, which requires the hand to apply not electricity but pressure. This type is known as a resistive screen and is frequently still found at checkout counters and on PDAs. Beneath its surface are two layers of conductive material. Pressure forces the two layers to connect, completing a circuit; different points on the screen will produce a current with different voltage, which allows the system to pinpoint the precise location of the touch. Although these screens are lower-resolution and can’t respond to multiple simultaneous touches, they do have one advantage over capacitive screens: they’ll work even if you’re wearing gloves or oven mitts.

• There are plenty of other, less common ways to create a touchscreen. Some devices send ultrasonic waves continually across the screen, which are interrupted upon contact; others, including Microsoft’s Surface tabletop screen, sense changes not in pressure or electric charge but in light. 
• Capacitive screens have also been developed that can register how hard you’re pressing. When you press down harder on anything you’ll notice your fingertip spread out to contact more of the surface. Newer screens take advantage of this fact and track whether you’re contacting an increasing number of capacitors.

Detroit: World-Class Museums and Revitalization Projects in the Motor City

The Motor City has certainly seen better days, but if you’re willing to look, you can still find a lot of worthwhile things to do and see. The downtown area has many top-flight cultural institutions and museums, and an influx of young people and artists are working to revitalize the city.

The 658,000-square-foot Detroit Institute of Arts, located downtown, comprises 100 galleries, an auditorium, a lecture hall, and a reference library. Among its vast collection: a dragon-tile relief from the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and a self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh. One of the city’s most fascinating art displays can’t be found at a museum or gallery. Tyree Guyton’s The Heidelberg Project is two blocks of once-decrepit houses that have been transformed into an open-air art installation, with colorful sculptures made out of discarded items including stuffed animals, vinyl records, old shoes, and scrap metal.

For a taste of Detroit’s glory days, head to the Motown Museum, located in the same two-story house where Stevie Wonder, the Supremes, the Jackson 5, and other music legends recorded some of their most enduring work. In one of the studios, you can see a giant divot in the wooden floor where producers and sound technicians tapped their feet to the music as it was recorded.

Greektown—located northeast of downtown—is a quirky neighborhood that has stuck to its immigrant roots. Along Monroe Street, you’ll find buildings that pay tribute to the Parthenon and mythical figures, and Greek music plays outdoors next to themed eateries.
