Waikiki, Honolulu: White-Sand Beaches, World-Class Surfing, and Luxury Entertainment

In 1911, local Waikiki kid Duke Kahanamoku beat the world record for the 100-meter freestyle swim by 4.6 seconds at an amateur swim meet—a feat so unimaginable athletic officials refused to recognize it. But when he won an Olympic gold medal the following year, Duke became an international sensation despite them. Photogenic and frequently in the press, he was rarely seen without his board, popularizing the local pastime of surfing. This publicity helped turn Waikiki from a private playground for Hawaii’s ruling class into a travel hot spot as people came from all over to take surfing lessons with a celebrity athlete. Today, you can see Duke’s likeness immortalized in a bronze statue on Waikiki’s Kuhio Beach.

When they’re not surfing or sprawled out on the beach, most travelers explore the area’s sunny avenues lined with everything from upscale boutiques and nightclubs to craft booths and street performers. Other attractions include the Honolulu Zoo, which houses exotic and endangered species such as sumatran tigers and white-handed gibbons, and the Waikiki Aquarium, where more than 3,500 creatures of the Pacific glide throughout glassed-in galleries.

Also nearby is one of Hawaii’s most recognizable natural landmarks, Diamond Head State Monument, a 300,000-year-old saucer formed by a single explosive eruption. Hikers can walk along a trail where molten lava once smoldered to ascend to the crater’s 560-foot-tall lip.

Lomilomi Massage: Dancing Toward Spiritual Wellness

Lomilomi massage is as much about inner peace as it is about outer relaxation. Explore Groupon’s guide to the modality to learn more about this unique practice.

Lomilomi could be translated as simply as “rub rub,” but the motions of the hands don’t tell the whole story of this Hawaiian massage form. As the healers employ broad movements, using their forearms, elbows, and hands to treat both the upper and lower body, they’re working in tune with the spiritual realm around them to bring the body into harmony with its surroundings. Emphasis is placed on long, gliding movements, often aided by oil, and therapists move around their reclining clients with graceful, dance-like steps. They may also press in with circular thumb motions, knead with the knuckles, or chop with the side of the hand to release tension from larger muscles.

Lomilomi has a long legacy within the Hawaiian community, but it was only in the 1970s that “Auntie” Margaret Machado established a formal teaching practice that welcomed anyone who wanted to learn the art. That hasn’t diminished the place of the mystical in lomilomi. “During a genuine lomilomi session, the therapist is aligned with divine energy, and keeps his or her heart and mind clear for Spirit to move through them as a conduit for healing energy. Proper breathing and pure thoughts are important,” wrote Tamara Mondragon, one of Machado’s first students, in Massage magazine in 2000. Sessions often begin with a prayer or blessing, and practitioners work to enhance peace of mind as well as bodily relaxation. While this energy work is being performed, lomilomi can bestow similar physical benefits to Swedish massage, such as improved circulation, a lower heart rate, and enough flexibility to beat an octopus at Twister.

Groupon Says

Kauai Island, Hawaii: Garden Isle with Waterfalls, Green Valleys, and the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”

Kauai is the oldest and northernmost island in the Hawaiian chain—and arguably one of the greenest, thanks to its lush tropical forests. From waterfalls spilling over jagged cliffs to the misty mountains framing the beaches, the peaceful landscape here inspired Travel + Leisure to rank Kauai as 1 of the top 10 islands in the world. It’s where you’ll find the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”—the 14-mile-long, 1-mile-wide Waimea Canyon. More colorful than the comparable Arizona site, the gaping gulch mystifies visitors with red lava beds, green overgrowth, and brown walls that change hue with the light.

Along the shore, Kauai’s reef-protected waters make it popular for surfing, boogie boarding, and snorkeling. Several adventure-tour companies rent out sea kayaks for exploring shoreline caves or the rivers cutting through the island’s interior rainforests. Oceanfront golf courses offer a more laid-back alternative for outdoorsy types.

The Na Pali Coast, “one of Hawaii’s most spectacular natural attractions” according to Frommer’s, is a 16-mile stretch of sea cliffs that tower above the Pacific. It’s possible to take a helicopter or boat tour of this landmark, but one of the best ways to experience it is by foot on one of the hiking trails. Kalalau Trail, one of the most popular, starts at a sea-level beach and then climbs steadily uphill along the coastline with sweeping views along the way (albeit with sometimes treacherously narrow pathways).

**Harlem Globetrotters Playing Three-on-Five**

Since forming in the 1920s, the Harlem Globetrotters have continued to entertain millions of parents, children, and general basketball admirers with a trademark blend of athletic precision and razzle-dazzle showmanship. For the team’s 2015 tour, a rotating roster of Globetrotter favorites—including three female players—takes to the hardwood each game. Spectators might spot veteran guard TNT sharing a behind-the-back pass with dunker Thunder, who also holds the world record for longest basketball shot at 109 feet and 9 inches. The Globetrotters might also present a study in contrasts with 5-foot-2 Too Tall and 7-foot-4 Stretch, the team’s tallest member.

This season, the team faces off against its classic nemesis, the Washington Generals, whose head coach was also a member of the last Generals team to have beat the Globetrotters—more than 40 years ago. Each game gives the Globetrotters’ jovial jocks a chance to extend their decades-long dominance as youngsters laugh along and witness classic routines of unconventional passing and sudden transmutations of water into confetti. Over the years, similar antics have followed the Globetrotters around the world, including to 122 countries and territories and all six continents on which basketballs grow naturally. The Globetrotters’ extensive travels haven’t gone unnoticed: they’re one of the few teams to earn a spot in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as ambassadors of the sport.
