Stay at Jolly Roger Motel in Wildwood Crest, NJ. Dates into July.

Hotel at a Glance: Jolly Roger Motel

The beaches and boardwalks of the Jersey Shore are right within reach when you stay at the Jolly Roger Motel, located on a barrier island of Wildwood. Take in the scenery from a private balcony, or head out on foot to discover the carnival firsthand.

Across from the beach: Wildwood Crest’s huge, free beaches are a quick walk from the motel.

Take a dip in the oversize heated outdoor pool. There’s also a kiddie pool for the little ones.

Have a cookout on one of the several gas grills on the premises; the efficiency rooms feature kitchenettes, too.

Play ball: The property features tennis courts, a bocce-ball court, and shuffleboard.

The Wildwoods, New Jersey: Classic Boardwalk Fun and Doo-Wop-Era History

Less than an hour south of Atlantic City, you’ll find the Wildwoods, a cluster of towns set on a barrier island just off New Jersey’s southernmost point. Though the area is more subdued than Atlantic City, families will still find a dizzying assortment of carnival rides, malt shops, and arcade games along the Wildwoods Boardwalk.

During the 1950s and ’60s, the area became a hot spot for up-and-coming rock and doo-wop singers, including Chubby Checker, Bill Haley, and Bobby Rydell, who immortalized the city’s carefree spirit in the tune “Wildwood Days.” You can learn more about the era at the Doo Wop Experience and Neon Sign Garden, which pays homage to mid-20th-century music, decor, and advertising.

Incubus & Deftones 2015 Tour with Special Guests Death From Above 1979 and The Bots

The Incubus legacy: across 20 hard-rocking, genre-bending years, the band has landed four #1 hits on the Billboard Alternative charts (including “Drive” and “Love Hurts”) and six studio albums that went Gold, Platinum, and multi-Platinum

The Deftones legacy: seven critically acclaimed albums, 10 million records sold, and a distinct type of hard rock that “thrives on conflict and chaos,” according to The New York Times

Trust Fall (Side A): the latest EP of new music from Incubus that guitarist Mike Einziger says is “pretty indicative of where we are now. This is what the band sounds like in 2015.”

Koi No Yokan: Deftones’ latest release, which incorporated elements of shoegaze and psychedlia, and was hailed as one of the top albums of 2012 by both Spin and Revolver

Rolling Stone’s take on dance-punk duo Death from Above 1979: “Returning a decade later, they’re still crushing violent, angular riffs, but they’re also writing catchier songs. A throwback to a throwback that’s better the second time around.”

Rolling Stone’s take on garage punkers, The Bots: they named the duo “Most Likely to Succeed in 2014” after their head-turning set at Coachella

Choose From Four Options

$18 for a one day Fun with Food for Kids class

$22 for a one day Yoga and Drawing class

$12 for a one day tie die workshop for adults and kids

$79 for choice of one class

A Chat with Manayunk Roxborough Art Center

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
The Manayunk Art Center is more than just a classroom; it is a place for innovation. We provide affordable art classes for adults and children in mediums such as clay, watercolor, and oil paint. Just added this year; we offer glass blowing in conjunction with The Crefeld School.

Do you provide any materials? What should your students expect to bring?
Most classes do not require outside materials from the student. For the yoga and drawing class, bring a mat, water bottle, and your mantra. If you are coming to tie-dye, feel free to bring any extra white or light-colored clothes you may want to dye. MRAC will provide plain t-shirts.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Our mission is to help develop an appreciation and education of the fine arts, literary expression and related cultural endeavors to all ages. We are devoted to fostering the arts in both the local and regional communities.

What do you love most about your job?
Art is the gift that keeps on giving; it gives peace of mind to its creator, it can be given as a gift at christmas or birthdays, it can even give insight to future generations about the past. I love teaching skills necessary for this gift to others, sharing my own happiness with Philadelphia.

Groupon Says

With this Getaway, you’ll get daily spa access for two, as well as a daily $20 credit to use at select onsite dining venues. At Capriccio, for instance, you can enjoy elegant Italian food amid Old-World lanterns and white columns. Visit Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville entertainment complex (not included with dining credit) to enjoy several restaurants, themed gaming areas, bars, and retail shops. Stylish guest rooms come with free WiFi and are split between the Rendezvous Tower and Ocean Tower, which overlooks the Atlantic.

Atlantic City, New Jersey: Casinos and Carnival Rides Lining Historical Beachside Boardwalk

No trip to Atlantic City is complete without a stroll along its signature boardwalk, which stretches for 6 miles along New Jersey’s eastern coast. Originally built in 1870 to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, the boardwalk grew in popularity as a place where you could drink and gamble during Prohibition without much trouble from the police, as depicted in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. The boardwalk is still popular for its casinos, but it’s family-friendly, too; visitors are just as inclined to sit at the beach or stop at one of the many carnival rides.

On the boardwalk, it’s worth it to check out the Absecon Lighthouse, which is more than 150 years old. It’s possible to climb its 228 steps to the top, which features sweeping views of the city skyline and the sea. Down at the base, you’ll find a replica of the original light keeper’s lonely cloister and the collection of sock puppets he created to keep him company.

Proving further that Atlantic City isn’t all nightclubs, boardwalk, and casinos is Gardner’s Basin, a maritime village along the bay. Here, a community of artisans uses seashells and driftwood to hand-make items such as wind chimes and picture frames. However, the Basin’s biggest claim to fame is the 25,000-gallon Atlantic City Aquarium swimming with turtles and rays.

Hotel at a Glance: Star Inn

You can’t miss the Star Inn: it’s painted a bright yellow with white balconies, standing out in Cape May’s historic district. The Star Inn is one block from the Atlantic shoreline and within walking distance of the unique shops and restaurants that make Cape May such a pleasant family resort destination.

Town-view rooms are modeled in the style of the seashore with bright colors, nautical accents and artwork, and period furnishings.

Efficiency suites are family-friendly, with balconies or private backyards with porch swings, kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, and WiFi.

Enjoy farm-to-table food at the award-winning Blue Pig Tavern, located across the street at the Star Inn’s sister property. Ingredients such as herbs and eggs are sourced from the tavern’s very own farm, located 2 miles away.

Cape May, New Jersey: Seaside Resort Town with Victorian Architecture

Long billed as America’s oldest seaside resort, Cape May sits at New Jersey’s southernmost tip. The setting is so idyllic that Travel Channel named the town’s coastline 1 of the top 10 beaches in the country. Aside from beachcombing, popular pastimes here include fishing, whale watching, and bird watching. In fact, the New York Times called Cape May “one of North America’s hottest birding spots.” You might see bald eagles, herons, and woodcocks. In the spring, keep your eyes peeled for the latter’s intricate mating dance.

After a fire ravaged most of Cape May in 1878, residents rebuilt in the contemporary style of the time, and dozens of their stately Victorian homes remain standing today. Consequently, the Cape May Historic District has earned the distinction of being a National Historic Landmark. Horses and carriages tour the colorful, cottage-lined streets, which have been deemed off-limits to chain stores in order to preserve the classic small-town atmosphere. Along Delaware Bay stands the 1859 Cape May Lighthouse. Those who climb the tower’s 199 stairs are rewarded at the top with an unbeatable view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Middlebury, Vermont: Morgan Horses and Historical Mills in the Foothills of the Green Mountains

Middlebury is nestled in the foothills of northeastern Vermont’s Green Mountains. The rolling hillsides are dotted with picture-perfect New England scenes—farms, white churches, and quaint cottages that predate the American Revolution. It’s this pastoral charm that helped earn Middlebury a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

In the heart of downtown, an old mill-turned-art gallery sits alongside Otter Creek on Main Street. Not far off, the creek spills into Middlebury Falls—you can get some great snapshots of it from the top of the Main Street bridge. Visit the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History to look at early town documents as well as historical furniture and clothing. Among equestrians, Middlebury is well known for producing morgan horses, a compact yet elegant breed that was one of the first developed in the United States. Stop by Middlebury’s National Museum of the Morgan Horse to learn more.

B Street Band

May, 1980: when the B Street Band formed

Which makes them: one of the longest-running tribute acts on the planet

Gigs they play per year: roughly 200, meaning they never get to feel the joy of knowing their mailman’s first name, but they’ve polished their act to a glisten

The secret to their success: singer Glenn Stuart shares Springsteen’s rugged handsomeness, rugged voice, and rugged Telecaster; the rest of the B Streeters nail Little Stevie’s microphone double-dates, Clarence Clemon’s sax solos, and Max Weinberg’s composed drum-bashings

What the B Street has done that the C and D Street bands can only dream of: they’ve actually opened for The Boss himself on several occasions

What you’ll hear: Springsteen’s greatest hits played with accuracy and athleticism, and perhaps some ditties from Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, or John Mellencamp

Special guest: former E-Street drummer Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez, who banged the skins on the first two Springsteen albums

Stay with $25 Resort Credit per Stay at Lancaster Host Resort in Lancaster, PA. Dates into August.

Sprawling Resort in Pennsylvania Dutch Country

Lancaster Host Resort sits on 225 acres in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, a scenic farmland region known for its Amish culture. Some of the area’s best attractions are located within walking distance of the resort, including the Amish Farm and House, which features an authentic one-room schoolhouse and an 1803 stone bank barn. The nearby American Music Theatre hosts touring Broadway musicals, rock concerts, and holiday shows. The resort is also just across the street from Dutch Wonderland, a popular family theme park that dates back to 1963.

Lancaster Host Resort’s beautifully landscaped grounds include a 1.9-mile walking trail and a championship golf course that’s open seasonally. Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, and Jack Nicklaus have all played on the course. Many guest rooms offer views of the resort’s pastoral surroundings, and all feature TVs and free WiFi.

The resort has a handful of restaurants that serve classic regional cuisine; your $25 resort credit is valid at any of the onsite restaurants and bars, as well as the golf pro shop. At Vistas, a casual eatery with views of the golf course, you can enjoy a breakfast spread that includes scrambled eggs, sausage, and home fries. Next door, Legends American Grill offers hand-cut steaks and fresh seafood specialties ranging from caramelized sea scallops to pan-seared salmon. The resort is also home to Stitches Comedy Club. Past performers have included Drew Carey, Lewis Black, and Darrell Hammond.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania: Crossroads of Amish Culture and German Heritage

Lancaster County sits in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. A number of Amish families—many of them descendants of the German immigrants who settled in the region in the 18th and 19th centuries—still farm the land here, living and working by the same timeless principles and unadorned methods they’ve been using for generations. On a drive through the area, you’ll see covered bridges spanning the Conestoga River and probably share the road with a horse-drawn buggy or two. At stops such as Kitchen Kettle Village, you can watch experts canning jellies, jams, and relishes and sample homemade baked goods.

To tour the countryside in style, take a ride aboard a coal-burning steam locomotive on the Strasburg Rail Road. As the train chugs past farmers tending fields and cattle grazing on hay and strudel, parlor-car attendants serve cocktails and snacks to passengers in the dining car or in first class. Across the street from the station in Strasburg, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania chronicles the history of the track via rotating exhibits and more than 100 locomotives and railcars.

AAA Four Diamond Waterfront Resort with Lively Casino

Formerly the Trump Marina, Golden Nugget Hotel was transformed into a luxury waterfront resort by the famous Golden Nugget chain from Las Vegas. Following a $150 million renovation that added a spa as well as a rooftop pool, the hotel opened in April of 2012 and quickly earned AAA’s prestigious Four Diamond status. You can see the results of the makeover in the casino, where crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling, flat-screen TVs line the walls, and nearly 1,500 slot machines cover the floor. Gamers can test their luck at table-game classics such as roulette and blackjack, and a separate poker room hosts multiple tournaments with low buy-ins daily.

Outside of the casino, H2O Pool and Bar is the resort’s other main attraction. Said to be as large as a football field, the outdoor pool deck has built-in seating and an intimate lounge area with a fire pit. Views overlook Frank S. Farley State Marina. The pool and hot tubs stay open year-round, and drinks are served at the poolside bar. On weekends you can enjoy a cocktail inside one of two interior lounges or at Live Bar, which hosts live bands and DJs.

Golden Nugget Hotel has a variety of restaurants, including the waterfront Chart House, which specializes in fresh seafood. An all-you-can-eat buffet is open for lunch and dinner. The onsite spa has a gym, steam room, hot tub, and relaxation area; this getaway comes with two daily access passes.

Along Ocean City’s century-old boardwalk, you can savor wild-caught blue crab, play old-fashioned arcade games, and watch candy makers spin colorful saltwater taffy. The lively boardwalk, which stretches for three miles along Maryland’s eastern shore, helped earn Ocean City a spot on USA Today’s list of the “10 great places to have some fun on a boardwalk.”

Where you’ve seen his sermons: on MTV in the ’90s, where Ministry arguably introduced industrial to a mainstream audience; performing in the first-ever Lollapalooza; in a scene of Steven Spielberg’s A.I.

The band’s first massive hit: “Jesus Built My Hotrod,” the manic single from their breakthrough record, Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs

Other sonic scriptures you’ll hear live: “N.W.O.,” “Just One Fix,” and several tracks from their latest album, From Beer to Eternity

Steel Panther

Their gimmick: dressing in leather and playing their own tongue-in-cheek brand of ’80s-era hair metal

How they do it: with blazing guitar solos, sly winks, and shameless obscenity

Hits: “Community Property” and “Death to All But Metal”

What The Baltimore Sun praised: their “professionalism and penchant for crotch jokes”

What else: even as a parody band, they “stand as a better tribute to the ‘80s than many of the current bands from the big-hair era.”

Their latest album of raunchy lampoons: All You Can Eat, which features song titles not suitable for innocent eyes

Like a Storm

Who they are: a straight-shooting, headbanging, hard-rock band with a New Zealand slant

That slant: mixing their thundering guitars, bass, and drums with the sounds of the didgeridoo, djembe, and other instruments of their homeland

Monumental fact about the band: it’s the highest-charting New Zealand hard-rock act in the history of the US Active Rock Charts, and the only New Zealand act to hit any US chart without a record label

Their breakthrough single: “Love the Way You Hate Me”

Where you’ve seen them live: opening for rock and metal icons such as Korn, Puddle of Mudd, Creed, Staind, and Shinedown

Vegas-Style Hotel with Saloon and Seven Restaurants

At Valley Forge Casino Resort’s onsite saloon, you’ll find a bucking mechanical bull and bar-goers in cowboy boots strutting their way through line dances beneath colored lights. But this isn’t the Wild West. Instead, the resort sits about 30 minutes outside of Philadelphia and just a short drive from Valley Forge National Historical Park. The hotel’s complimentary shuttle will take you to the King of Prussia Mall, one of the country’s largest shopping centers.

Inside the hotel, a casino brims with 600 slot machines and 50 tables for blackjack, craps, and roulette. You’ll stay in a casino-tower room, close to the action. Seven onsite restaurants cater to different cravings: there’s casual sushi at Asianoodle, and Pacific Prime has an upscale atmosphere, serving dishes such as maine lobster and filet mignon.

King of Prussia, Pennsylvania: Revolutionary History at Every Turn

Colonial and revolutionary history surround King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. George Washington led troops to battle in nearby Germantown, and Valley Forge National Historical Park houses the general’s original headquarters and several soldier monuments. Take a Magical History Tour to follow the Continental Army’s path to its 1777–1778 winter camp, or drive 30 minutes east to Chestnut Hill to stroll cobblestone streets dotted with shops and restaurants.

Harlem Globetrotters

**Harlem Globetrotters Playing Three-on-Five**

Since forming in the 1920s, the Harlem Globetrotters have continued to entertain millions of parents, children, and general basketball admirers with a trademark blend of athletic precision and razzle-dazzle showmanship. For the team’s 2015 tour, a rotating roster of Globetrotter favorites—including three female players—takes to the hardwood each game. Spectators might spot veteran guard TNT sharing a behind-the-back pass with dunker Thunder, who also holds the world record for longest basketball shot at 109 feet and 9 inches. The Globetrotters might also present a study in contrasts with 5-foot-2 Too Tall and 7-foot-4 Stretch, the team’s tallest member.

This season, the team faces off against its classic nemesis, the Washington Generals, whose head coach was also a member of the last Generals team to have beat the Globetrotters—more than 40 years ago. Each game gives the Globetrotters’ jovial jocks a chance to extend their decades-long dominance as youngsters laugh along and witness classic routines of unconventional passing and sudden transmutations of water into confetti. Over the years, similar antics have followed the Globetrotters around the world, including to 122 countries and territories and all six continents on which basketballs grow naturally. The Globetrotters’ extensive travels haven’t gone unnoticed: they’re one of the few teams to earn a spot in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as ambassadors of the sport.

1- or 2-Night Stay for Two with Bottle of Wine at The Carisbrooke Inn in Ventnor City, NJ

Charming Bed and Breakfast Steps from the Atlantic City Boardwalk

After The Carisbrooke Inn innkeeper John Battista traveled around Europe extensively, he returned with an appreciation for European hospitality and applied it to his own bed and breakfast, located just blocks from the Atlantic City boardwalk. Guests will notice the staff’s friendliness and attention to detail the moment they walk through the door, where a staffer waits to greet them and tow their bags upstairs. In the evening, there’s more hospitality on the ocean-view deck—you might try John’s special wine blend, fresh bruschetta, and focaccia, made from an old family recipe.

From the outside, it’s easy to see the inn’s American foursquare-style architecture, typical of the building’s early 20th-century roots. But inside, Victorian touches and a warm color palette bring to mind a cottage in the French countryside. Each of the guest rooms is individually styled with antique furnishings and vintage pieces, but also features a flat-screen TV and complimentary WiFi.

In the morning, the inn hosts a made-to-order breakfast in its sunlit parlor. The meal features a hot entree made from scratch, which may include pancakes with fruit, french toast, or an omelette. It also includes seasonal fruit and housemade pastries. With this Getaway, you’ll also receive a bottle of wine.

Ventnor City, New Jersey: Historical Seaside Hamlet near Atlantic City Casinos

Less than 2 miles from downtown Atlantic City’s casinos and clubs lies its more subdued neighbor, Ventnor City. It’s a small, old-fashioned beach community with quaint shops and restaurants, a welcome complement to Atlantic City’s frenetic atmosphere.

The town is the perfect launch pad for trips to the beach’s signature boardwalk, which stretches for 6 miles along New Jersey’s eastern coast.

Proving further that Atlantic City isn’t all nightclubs, boardwalk, and casinos is Gardner’s Basin, a maritime village along the bay. Here, a community of artisans uses seashells and driftwood to hand make items such as wind chimes and picture frames. However, the Basin’s biggest claim to fame is the 25,000-gallon Atlantic City Aquarium, which is swimming with turtles and rays.
