Incubus & Deftones 2015 Tour with Special Guests Death From Above 1979 and The Bots

The Incubus legacy: across 20 hard-rocking, genre-bending years, the band has landed four #1 hits on the Billboard Alternative charts (including “Drive” and “Love Hurts”) and six studio albums that went Gold, Platinum, and multi-Platinum

The Deftones legacy: seven critically acclaimed albums, 10 million records sold, and a distinct type of hard rock that “thrives on conflict and chaos,” according to The New York Times

Trust Fall (Side A): the latest EP of new music from Incubus that guitarist Mike Einziger says is “pretty indicative of where we are now. This is what the band sounds like in 2015.”

Koi No Yokan: Deftones’ latest release, which incorporated elements of shoegaze and psychedlia, and was hailed as one of the top albums of 2012 by both Spin and Revolver

Rolling Stone’s take on dance-punk duo Death from Above 1979: “Returning a decade later, they’re still crushing violent, angular riffs, but they’re also writing catchier songs. A throwback to a throwback that’s better the second time around.”

Rolling Stone’s take on garage punkers, The Bots: they named the duo “Most Likely to Succeed in 2014” after their head-turning set at Coachella

Stay at Geronimo Creek Retreat in Seguin, TX. Dates into June.

Hotel at a Glance: Geronimo Creek Retreat

Tipis and cabins dot the wooded grounds of Geronimo Creek Retreat, but you won’t be roughing it here. There’s an outdoor hot tub onsite, and most of the units are equipped with full kitchens. A creek runs along the property, complete with a rope swing. As a guest, you’ll have access to cast fishing, kayaking, and tubes to take out into the water.

Pine trees shade a babbling creek where you can cast out a line for fish.

Go glamping: You can stay in a tipi equipped with a kitchenette, or cozy up in a loft in an old-fashioned log cabin.

Game on: Play ping-pong or darts in the rec room, which also has a big-screen TV and hot tub.

Rent a kayak to paddle down the Guadalupe River—it’s just a 10-15 minute drive from the property.

Nearby shopping: San Marcos Premium Outlets is just a 20-minute drive away.

Head to New Braunfels to splash around at Schlitterbahn Water Park and explore the Natural Bridge Caverns.

Seguin, Texas: Historic Pecan Town Near New Braunfels

Seguin has more than earned its nickname as the Pecan Capital of Texas. It has a pecan orchard, a pecan-nutcracker museum, an annual pecan festival, and a half-ton sculpture of a pecan that’s believed to be the biggest in the world. The small town on the banks of the Guadalupe River also has a charming downtown lined with Victorian-era houses and boutiques.

The town is less than a half-hour drive from New Braunfels, where you’ll find the famous Schlitterbahn water park. Here, you can splash down high-speed water slides and scream your way up water coasters that zoom uphill. To explore nature, take a canoe down the Guadalupe River or hike the otherworldly Natural Bridge Caverns.

The Scouting Report

On April 25, the Scorpions sent more than 9,000 Minnesota United fans home disappointed when they earned a draw in the final seconds. The match, which was played in front of the largest crowd in Minnesota’s history, included a 60-yard strike from Zourab Tsiskaridze , as well as a goal from Rafael Castillo just seconds before the whistle sounded and the referees took flight into the evening sky. On May 9, the reigning NASL champs will return to Toyota Field to try to keep that momentum going. They’ll square off against the Carolina RailHawks, who have already collected five points in the young spring season.

San Antonio Scorpions

Founded in 2010, the San Antonio Scorpions wasted no time digging their pincers into the North American Soccer League standings; in 2012, they finished first overall and advanced to the semi-finals. Two years later, they claimed their first league championship. Yet despite their quick success on the pitch, the Scorpions have arguably made a bigger impact off of it: all profits from the team’s operations go toward funding Morgan’s Wonderland, a colorful amusement park in Longhorn Quarry designed for people with (and without) special needs.

The idea stems from team owner, businessman, and philanthropist Gordon Hartman, who builds support for Morgan’s Wonderland via the Scorpions’ “Soccer for a Cause” program. In 2012, the team’s efforts were noticed by Toyota, who committed to sponsoring a new stadium. Completed for the 2013 season, the result of that commitment currently boasts a seating capacity of 8,000 with plans to expand as large as 18,000, so long as fan support continues to grow enough and the chair saplings take root in the concrete.

Groupon Says

Stay with Optional $20 Dining Credit at YO Ranch Hotel and Conference Center in Texas Hill Country; Dates into August

Top Reasons to Stay at YO Ranch Hotel and Conference Center

It’s located in the heart of Texas Hill Country, the birthplace of many cowboy legends. The hotel’s lobby reflects this history—there’s an H. Clay Dahlberg statue of a cowboy riding a bucking bronco, and branding irons hang from the chandeliers.

Each guest room features hardwood furnishings and either a balcony or patio.

The neighboring YO Ranch is a great spot for hunting and horseback riding.

There’s plenty to do in the area, from visiting vineyards to strolling through museums.

The town of Fredericksburg, just 20 miles away, contains boutique shops, German-inspired restaurants, and the National Museum of the Pacific War.

Back at the hotel, classic American fare is served in the Branding Iron Restaurant; select options of this getaway come with a $20 dining credit.

The Elm Waterhole Saloon is modeled on the taverns of the old west. You can sip whiskey, play pool, and catch a game on a flat-screen TV, just like 19th-century cowpokes used to do.

Also onsite: courts for basketball, tennis, and sand volleyball.

Texas Hill Country: Pastoral Landscape of Ranches, Rivers, and German-American Towns

A picturesque region of rolling hills and valleys covered in bluebonnets, the area of central Texas known as Texas Hill Country has been compared to the landscape of Tuscany by the New York Times. Texas Hill Country is a backyard playground for nearby cities, as it lies just west of Austin and northwest of San Antonio. Urbanites often escape here for the weekend to enjoy the slower pace and beat the heat—the region’s slightly higher elevation means it’s often less humid. With many state parks and spring-fed rivers, the Hill Country is also a haven for outdoorsy types; activities range from fishing and tubing to rock climbing. The Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is popular thanks to its main attraction: a gigantic pink-granite dome in the middle of the park.

Among the Hill Country’s major towns, Bandera best captures its cowboy spirit. It’s not uncommon to catch an open rodeo in the summer or to see a ranch hand riding to the store on horseback. The town is also surrounded by dude ranches where you can get a taste of the local lifestyle. Just north of Bandera, the town of Fredericksburg is also worth exploring. Along with New Braunfels, it was one of the main settlements of local German immigrants in the 1840s—a heritage that visitors can still see today in the “Willkommen” signs hung on shop doors.

Impossible Animals
Unlike any other circus you’ve ever seen, Legends’ mythical menagerie unveils live unicorns, a massive, time-displaced wooly mammoth, and a pegasus.

Impossible Humans
The Tuniziani Troupe of acrobats attempts four consecutive triple somersaults every show. Not to be outdone, the eight members of the Torres family motorcycle around a 16-foot steel globe at speeds of 65 miles per hour without ever colliding.

Impossible Humans and Animals
The Cossack Riders of the Wind are such peerless horsemen that they can climb behind and under their mount, even as it gallops about the ring at speeds of more than 25 miles per hour. British big-cat trainer Alexander Lacey–dubbed “Best of the Best” at the Circus Festival in Monte Carlo—proves that lions and tigers are capable of astounding feats, like understanding English.

And… You!!!
Children who show up one hour before the show are invited to step inside the ring to learn acrobatic skills and juggling, get an autograph from the stars, and possibly win a painting by one of the elephants in the show. They can also see the elephants up close at the Animal Open House (available only in select markets).

Groupon Says

Hotel at a Glance: Wyndham Garden San Antonio Riverwalk/Museum Reach

This newly built Wyndham Garden hotel sits along the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River, a quick walk from the San Antonio Museum of Art. Take a short water-taxi ride to downtown, or have a drink on the Wyndham’s riverfront outdoor patio.

Bourbon Street Seafood Kitchen: Savor seafood and Cajun cuisine at this onsite lunch-and-dinner restaurant; head to the café for breakfast.

Spacious rooms feature big windows and free WiFi.

Splash around in the heated outdoor pool, or work up a sweat in the onsite fitness center.

San Antonio’s Museum Reach: River Walk Extension Lined with Native Plants and Public Art

Lush terraces landscaped with native plants line Museum Reach, a 1.3-mile extension of the San Antonio River Walk. It was completed in 2009 as part of the city’s efforts to expand the popular River Walk to a sprawling 15 miles. Pedestrian walkways run on either side of the river, passing whimsical public art installations—manmade caves and shimmering fish that seem to “float” underneath an overpass—and attractions along the way. You can easily walk, bike, or take a river taxi to the original River Walk in downtown San Antonio.

The San Antonio Museum of Art, for which Museum Reach was named, occupies a prime spot along the River Walk. Housed in the 1892 Lone Star Brewery, it displays the largest collection of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art in the southern United States. Continue north to stroll through the old Pearl Brewery complex. The brewery dates back to 1883 and has been revitalized as a trendy dining and nightlife spot, containing the Culinary Institute of America’s San Antonio campus and numerous restaurants, shops, and bars.

Judas Priest

1969: the year that Judas Priest formed in Birmingham, England to rock the petals off flower children’s heads and put an end to the Summer of Love

The formula that made them metal gods: twin lead guitars from Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, Rob Halford’s operatic vocals, and a love of biking that informs their fashion sense and songs like “Hell Bent for Leather”

2010: the year Halford and co. received a long-overdue Grammy for “Dissident Aggressor”

2014: the year the band returned with all engines revving with their back-to-basics album, Redeemer of Souls, which Rolling Stone said “is proof that Priest can still call themselves metal’s defenders of the faith.”
