International Champions Cup

In an effort to crank up the competition of the European club preseason tour, the International Champions Cup kicked off in 2013 as an eight-team competition spread across six U.S. cities. The tournament doubled in size in 2014, highlighted by a record-breaking match between Real Madrid and Manchester United that drew more than 109,000 fans to the University of Michigan’s “Big House.”

Like a bubble borne from a million pieces of gum, the ICC will expand across the globe this summer with editions in China and Australia. On North American soil, the tournament will unfold in 11 cities at esteemed venues, including a stop at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. There, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, and the rest of Manchester United’s star-filled roster will clash with Club America during the third of the ICC’s 17 total matches. With 35 titles spread across nearly a century’s worth of history, Club America enters this match as arguably the greatest team in the history of Mexican soccer.

Groupon Says

Cuticles: Defending Your Digits

Cuticles form an occasionally contested border between skin and nail. Learn how nail technicians can safely get them into good condition with Groupon’s investigation.

No one pays much attention to cuticles until they start causing trouble. Either they grow thick enough to intrude on a uniform manicure or they tear and cause pain. But the clingy strips of skin at the bottom of each nail actually perform some important functions. First, cuticles act as protective barriers that help new keratin cells grow into long, healthy nails instead of short, creepy talons. Second, they help keep bacteria out of the nail bed, where it can cause painful infections.

Though some nail salons offer to trim your cuticles during a manicure, the risk of infection—even with properly sanitized instruments—may outweigh any aesthetic benefit. After all, cuticles will grow back no matter what, so even a temporarily neater line at the base of the nail is unlikely to last for more than a few days. But nail technicians do have ways of fashioning smooth ovals or almond shapes without exposing the nail to dangerous intruders. First, they’ll avoid tearing the skin by making sure it’s as soft and supple as possible. An intensive moisturizer will help, as will a soak in a bowl of warm water. Once the hands are well-conditioned, the tech will begin carefully, gently working with a cuticle stick, first pushing the cuticles back and then, with a tiny circular motion, buffing away any dead skin remnants and dried-on cupcake frosting still clinging to the nail.

Groupon Says

Stay at The Breakers of Long Beach in Long Beach, WA, with Dates into June

Top Reasons to Stay at The Breakers of Long Beach

The resort fronts a stretch of the 28-mile Long Beach Peninsula—billed as the world’s longest beach open to vehicles.

The historic Fort Columbia State Park is only about a 20-minute drive away. Head here to see late 19th-century army batteries and other vintage buildings.

Each spacious one-bedroom condo has a log fireplace and private deck or patio; the bedroom unit is smaller but also features its own deck. For a little extra room, pick a two-bedroom condo.

After exploring the property’s 24 acres of parkland, you can soak under the stars in the outdoor hot tub or enjoy the indoor pool.

The shops and restaurants of downtown Long Beach are only a mile away.

Guests can have family picnics in the resort’s covered gazebo, which is equipped with charcoal barbecue grills and picnic tables. There is also a basketball court, horseshoes, and access to an 8-mile nature trail.

The resort picked up a 2014 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

Pets can be added in select rooms for $15 a night (contact hotel prior to purchase to ensure availability).

Long Beach, Washington: Clams, Kites, and Cranberries on the Pacific Coast

About 115 miles northwest of Portland, 28 miles of uninterrupted shoreline stretches across the Long Beach Peninsula. Crowds flock to the area all year round—even in the winter months, when average temperatures are in the 40s. The main draw during that part of the year is clamming. On certain government-approved dates, you can take to the sands to dig for fresh razor clams, which locals enjoy battered and fried in butter.

Come spring, warmer weather brings out swarms of colorful kites. Kite flying is something of an obsession in Long Beach. The town is home to an annual kite festival as well as the World Kite Museum, the only museum in America dedicated to the art, history, and science of kite making. Another local obsession is cranberries—their bright-red bogs line the coast from Oregon to British Columbia. At the Pacific Coast Cranberry Museum in Long Beach, you can learn about the history of cranberry farming, arrange a bog tour, and enjoy a cup of tart cranberry tea.

The Electric Run SeaTac takes place at Washington State Fair Events Center on Saturday, May 23, 2015, with waves of runners being released between 9 p.m. and 9:40 p.m.

Electric Run

Electric Run is a nocturnal wonderland spread cross five to seven zones, each decorated according to its theme with neon trees, hanging umbrellas, phosphorescent cacti, and cascading fountains. Each land also matches the surroundings with its own soundtrack: upbeat and energizing for the wilder areas, calming and melodic for the surreal ones. Once the sun sets, costumed participants travel through them all at their preferred pace. Everyone arrives at the same final destination, however a finish line flanked with photo ops, lights, lasers, and a DJ-propelled after-party keep the night illuminated until the thunderous ka-chunk of the sun’s timecard.

Groupon Says

French Country Inn and Cooking School in Washington Wine Country

Woodinville wine country is only a half-hour drive from the brewpubs and art galleries of downtown Seattle, but the two areas couldn’t be more different. Rolling orchards, wooded hills, and replica chateaus make Woodinville feel more like France’s Loire Valley than a metropolitan suburb. These European-inspired surroundings permeate L’Auberge at The Edge of Seattle. Set on a 5-acre property secluded by towering pines and banks of lavender, the award-winning inn features country suites and a sophisticated foodie scene.

The cooking school operates out of an open-plan kitchen with a wraparound chopping block. With this Getaway, you get to take one hands-on class on classic French fare, which runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Up to 12 students learn to craft a three-course meal that might center on crepes suzettes, leek-stuffed salmon, or chicken cordon bleu as well as desserts such as crème brûlée or chocolate mousse. For the dinner that follows, each person is allowed to bring one bottle of wine to drink and share with others who have brought wine. For those more interested in wine, private wine tours with certified wine educators are also available.

The attached bed and breakfast shows a similar indebtedness to French culture—the rooms feature antique French furnishings and country-floral prints. But there’s also a general homey feel to the place. There are extra pajamas in the dresser and spare toothbrushes in the bathroom. The studio suite comes with a book collection and decorative china, and the honeymoon suite boasts a wood-burning fireplace, a private veranda, and an elegant vanity set. The 750-square foot Chef’s Quarters cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, a separate bedroom, and a flat-screen TV with a selection of movies. Every morning, there’s a petit déjeuner spread that includes french pastries and housemade jam.

Woodinville Valley, Washington: Wineries and Breweries Minutes from Seattle

Located about 25 miles northeast of Seattle, the Woodinville Valley features dozens of boutique wineries. Wine-tasting tours are understandably popular here, but it’s also worth looking into the region’s microbreweries, which supply many of the craft IPAs that are a hit among Seattleites.

Outside the realm of grapevines, there are some lovely parks in the area. Along the banks of Lake Washington, the 316-acre Saint Edward State Park shelters bald eagles and otters. Marymoor Park borders Lake Sammamish and has its own velodrome, an angled racetrack that was built for bicyclists and to prop up coffee tables with missing legs.

Belltown, Seattle: Popular Artsy Neighborhood Just North of Downtown

Located half a mile north of downtown Seattle, Belltown is the city’s most densely populated neighborhood and a great place to experience the spirit of the city. Naturally, that involves coffee (to the surprise of nobody, Seattle was named America’s “Best Coffee City” by Travel + Leisure in 2011). In Belltown, you’ll find top-notch coffee shops such as Street Bean Espresso, a non-profit space serving sustainable, locally roasted coffee and artisan pastries. Mixed in with the neighborhood’s java dispensaries and trendy restaurants are an array of art galleries, including Roq La Rue, which specializes in pop surrealism and underground contemporary art.

About a half-mile south is Pike Place Market, one of Seattle’s most renowned attractions. Locals and out-of-towners alike flock to this semi-open-air marketplace to shop for fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, flowers, and meat. Come early in the morning to see the market’s fishmongers do what they’re famous for: tossing the day’s catch back and forth.

To see the town’s namesake natural springs, hop on a hiking trail that begins on the property; a 45-minute walk or 5-minute drive will get you there.

In-room amenities: private balcony, refrigerator, microwave, kitchen table, cable TV, air conditioning, and WiFi

Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia: Gateway to the Canadian Rockies

Radium is a gateway into the southern entrance of Kootenay National Park, which is often less crowded than nearby Banff National Park, though no less spectacular. It’s diverse, too—snow-capped peaks line the Continental Divide, and blooming cacti populate its semiarid grasslands.

You can hike, mountain bike, horseback ride, swim, fish, and canoe within the park’s borders. On the 1-mile (1.6 km) round-trip Marble Canyon trail, you’ll traverse a footbridge across a deep-and-narrow canyon, crisscrossing Tokumm Creek. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as mule and white-tailed deer, bears, and elk, all of which are frequently seen in the Columbia Valley.
