Che io sia dotato fisicamente di un cervello è un dato di fatto, anche se valutarne la capacità mi sembra un atto assai pretenzioso. Che stia abbandonando un posto di borsista post-doc per lasciare il paese alla ricerca di qualcosa di economicamente più vantaggioso è altrettanto un dato di fatto, ma dargli il nome di “fuga” mi sembra non corrispondente al contesto generale: i ricercatori di solito zoppicano lentamente nella speranza di non essere sommersi da un sistema economico avverso. Per questi due motivi la definizione di “cervello in fuga” mi è sempre sembrata inadeguata a descrivere quello che è accaduto a tanti miei ex-colleghi e che adesso sto vivendo in prima persona.

Rimane il fatto che dal 1 febbraio 2010 sarò a spasso, o più precisamente vagherò grazie ai famigerati low-cost in direzione UK, per cercare di interrompere la pluriennale esperienza di commuting imposta da un matrimonio a distanza e allo stesso tempo cercare di risolvere il problema che assilla un’intera generazione: come riuscire a pagare le prossime bollette e allo stesso tempo sbizzarrirsi nell’acquisto di un paio di CD senza dover necessariamente ricorrere all’aiuto del conto in banca dei genitori?

Lascio un centro di ricerca meraviglioso (il MICC), popolato da giovani volenterosi che giornalmente si pongono lo stesso quesito, capitanato da un professore a volte mal visto per la sua visione moderna dell’istituzione universitaria. Auguro a tutti di poter trovare quel che non sono stato in grado di trovare in questi anni, ringrazio per quel che mi è stato insegnato e che son riuscito di imparare, mi incammino su una nuova strada ancora da battere con in mente le parole di una mia cara amica: nessuna condizione umana è permanente.

First of all, it must be noticed that yesterday there was our demo for the Vidivideo project, as Marco reports:

Today was the demo day in ACM Multimedia 2009, here in Beijing. Thomas Alisi and I have demoed for about two (very busy) hours the semantic video search engine, the web-based video annotation tool and a new interface for video browsing. All the systems are web applications developed at MICC within the VidiVideo project.

The presentation was extremely successful, and luckily we had two machines to run the demos, otherwise it would have been difficult to show our work to all the people that came to visit us.

And another awful fact must be reported: there is a quite hard censorship in China, our posts and tweets appear to go in the vacuum since we are totally unable to see the effects of our posts. Friendfeed, Twitter, Facebook are all blocked. Even the Friendfeed feed I usually read on my Google reader makes the browser give a connection error. Quoting Marco again:

The ACM Multimedia 2009 website reports that there’s a Twitter hashtag (#acmmm09) to follow what’s going on here at ACM Multimedia 2009, in Beijing.

The problem is that Twitter seems to be considered perilous by the Chinese government, probably inspired by what has happened in Iran, so, like Facebook, it can’t be accessed.

The tweet related to he demos made by MICC yesterday have been tweeted from a guy in Europe.

Few days ago I decided to move all my mobile sync services to google products from an Exchange 2007 server. My mobile is a Nokia E90 Communicator, a decent “brick in my pocket” stuffed with a bunch of useful-but-not-so-cute software. I was totally unprepared for what was going to happen, since I could not imagine that the native Symbian S60 sync service “Mail for Exchange” would have incurred in such problems. I have read almost everything about this problems on the web, but I did not found anything that was really describing what was happening to me, thus I will write down here some notes and hopefully someone else could find them useful.

The problem

The sync service simply does not work. Either it gives you a “Connection error, try again later” or “System error, try again later”, and you perfectly know that google is up, 3G is working pretty well and “later” simply does not make sense…

Now the premise

• Backup everything: calendar and contacts. If you can sync google calendar and contacts with some desktop applications than you can export data from there AND from google website as well: a calendar and some contacts will not fill your hard disk up.

• Enable IMAP access to your gmail account. This should not be mandatory and I would really love to have it solved in a different way, since I could not manage to make the mail service work on “Mail for Exchange”. So if you find a different solution, please feel free to suggest it here.

• Perform a fresh install of Mail for Exchange for Nokia, I read somewhere that the correct version is 2.9.158. The software can be found here. Just trash away the old app, then send the new one via bluetooth and install it, it should go straight forward.

And the solution

After installation of Mail for Exchange is complete, it should ask you if you want to proceed with profile configuration. Answer yes and type in the basic settings it ask:

• username: enter your full account@gmail.com
• password: you should know it
• domain: type in some fake data, you will erase it later

After the stupid wizard has finished, it should send a message complaining about the security certificate. You can instruct it to accept the certificate permanently, then it will prompt with a connection error. Thank you smarty, I just put a fake domain in it…

Ok, now the real configuration: open the application, select option -> edit profile and type in the following:

• connection
  • exchange server: m.google.com
  • default port: yes
• credential
  • username: full account@gmail.com
  • password: you should know it
  • domain: reset the fake data inserted in the wizard
• sync schedule: what ever you like
• calendar
  • sync calendar: yes
  • initial sync: what ever you like, assuming you have a backup
• tasks
  • sync tasks: NO (mail for exchange does not have a clue about the recent task application in google…)
• contacts
  • sync contacts: yes
  • initial sync: what ever you like, assuming you have a backup
• mail
  • sync mail: NO. WTF? I am using “Mail for Exchange” and I won’t sync the mail?!?!? yes… that’s the hard truth, mail for exchange won’t sync your google mail, at least it does not work on my communicator, that’s the reason why I enabled the IMAP access on gmail and decided to add a mailbox to the message services.

Ok, done! Tell your phone to do a full resync and you should see the magic. Or at least a shallow surrogate: it works, sometimes. I frequently have errors with wrong credentials, and after my first sync all contacts and calendar were gone, then reappeared after few hours. I had to setup the gmail box as a separate service, and events added on the mobile usually appear on my google calendar only after a few syncs.

It is not “wow, full 2009 instant sync, messaging, blogging, real time search, hi-speed connection” and so on, it just works, sometimes. And I am exploring the market to chose a new device when my contract will eventually expire in jan 2010. Any suggestions?

ok ok, I know that I should not have done it, there is an advice just at the front door of the venue saying that people should not take pictures during the gigs. But, come on, Union Chapel is fantastic, it was my first time there. And Bill Callahan, whom I saw only once 2 years ago at ATP Festival, was in a really good mood and if you know him a little bit, it is quite rare. Arneb: a Rich Internet Application for Ground Truth Annotation of Videos

Abstract: In this technical demonstration we show the current version of Arneb , a web-based system for manual annotation of videos, developed within the EU VidiVideo project. This tool has been developed with the aim of creating ground truth annotations, that can be used for training and evaluating automatic video annotation systems. Annotations can be exported to MPEG-7 and OWL ontologies. The system has been developed according to the Rich Internet Application paradigm, allowing collaborative web-based annotation.frame accurate annotations.

Sirio: an Ontology-based Web Search Engine for Videos

Abstract: In this technical demonstration we show a web video search engine based on ontologies, the Sirio system, that has been developed within the EU VidiVideo project. The goal of the system is to provide a search engine for videos for both technical and non-technical users. In fact, the system has different interfaces that permit different query modalities: free-text, natural language, graphical composition of concepts using boolean and temporal relations and query by visual example. In addition, the ontology structure is exploited to encode semantic relations between concepts permitting, for example, to expand queries to synonyms and concept specializations.

Just an addendum: Sirio was the hound of the mythical hunter Orion. It was a dog so swift that no prey could escape it. Arneb is a hare, one of the preys of the mythical hunter Orion. It is chased by Orion’s hound, Sirio.

Inaugurata la mostra “Da Petra a Shawbak” nella limonaia di Palazzo Pitti a Firenze. Il centro di ricerca MICC presso il quale lavoro ha portato un tavolo interattivo multi-touch basato su tecnologia FTIR.

Assolutamente necessario apportare un Errata Corrige ai credits riportati in mostra, oltre alla mia gestione del progetto per il centro MICC (Direttore A. Del Bimbo) hanno lavorato assiduamente: Nicola Torpei, Lea Landucci, Filippo Principi, Matteo Bencini, Nicola Martorana e Riccardo Canalicchio. Questi ultimi due in particolare hanno avuto la sfortuna di iniziare a lavorare sul progetto quando il colophon era ormai scritto e stampato, ma senza di loro sarebbe stato assolutamente impossibile raggiungere la fine del tunnel!

Lo sviluppo del progetto ha portato alla realizzazione di un framework Cocoa per il gesture recognition, attualmente pubblicato open source, chiamato Coconuit. Lo potete vedere in funzione in questo video

Il progetto è frutto di una collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Studi Storici e Geografici dell’Università di Firenze, ulteriori informazioni reperibili al sito ufficiale del progetto di ricerca del castello di Shawbak.

Mesi di lavoro e incontri, ipotesi su come trasmettere meglio il messaggio, su come farlo capire anche ad una prima visione. Studi scientifici, prove empiriche, tagli e aggiustamenti. Disponibilità e pazienza estrema del Presidente di AdF, Michele Legnaioli. Il tutto coperto da un più che giusto Non-Disclosure Agreement che a noi “esterni” dava ancora di più il gusto del mistero e faceva prudere la lingua quando si sentivano per strada generici, e solitamente malfondati, commenti e ipotesi. E questa è stata solamente la parte che ha riguardato la produzione di un breve filmato di comunicazione che illustra le ipotesi per la nuova pista dell’aeroporto, senza minimamente entrare nel merito dell’immane lavoro che ha portato alla produzione di tutta la documentazione necessaria a costruirne un semplice “vestito per la festa”.

Del filmato, proiettato il 30 giugno all’assemblea annuale di Confindustria Firenze durante l’intervento del Presidente Gentile, pubblico su questo sito solamente un frame, quello che è riportato oggi sui quotidiani locali. La rassegna stampa è vasta, cito solamente i 2 maggiori: Repubblica e Corriere. Da Repubblica fa piacere leggere il paragrafo:
