Every year on August 2nd, Costa Rica celebrates “The Virgin of the Angels” or “The Negrita”. I have touched base with this tradition a few times in the past, so please read it if you are not familiar with the subject.

What struck me this year, was the following story:

That woman right there is Costa Rican’s actual president, Laura Chinchilla. A faithful devotee to the Catholic religion even though she had the “guts” to remarry, something that upon her god’s eyes is judged as adultery (gotta love a god that is so eager to judge on someone loving someone).

What I find funny…in a “clown serial killer who eats your brains for shits and giggles” kind of funny way, is the fact that the president of this country reaches out to an imaginary friend to “give her strength to keep away violence from our schools and homes”. That is just grand, BEST IDEA EVER. How about we place some kind of religious symbol in our homes and schools to keep all evil away? Wait, what? We already have some kind of religious symbol in 90% of our homes and schools? And it hasn’t stopped evil? We’ll slap me in the ass and call me Sally, how on Earth did that happen?!?

You might think faith is good, that it harnesses no power whatsoever to do evil deeds amongst others, but I beg to differ. I think that faith should be strictly kept away from professions where decisions can have an incredible impact on others. Otherwise you *could* have leaders in the free world saying that god talked to them or something…what? You mean it’s happened before? Oh come fucking on!

See what faith does? How many people have died in Iraq to this day because “god” called G.W. on his private bat-phone and issued orders to seek and destroy? Far too many. And if god talked to this ass, what type of person does that make god? Doesn’t this dude have some kind of standard when it comes to reaching out? Come on!

Anyhow, my point is that if you have a Dr. performing surgery on you, you’d want this medic to be 100% of what the fuck he is doing with the scalpel. You don’t want this guy to say “shit, dunno what I’m doing, but the lord is with me”. Likewise, you don’t want someone being responsible for ruling a country, and delegating responsibility on a FUCKING STATUE to fix things.

I beg you, Laura Chinchilla, do not rely on statues, temples, books, or any kind of hocus-pocus to fix the shithole that this country has become. Might as well pray to your childhood blanket or teddy bear to fix this mess. I’d go with the blanket…no wait, the teddy bear…ah, fuck it.

I had written this post way back and forgot to publish it. I’ve had previous issues with my hosting company and this one pretty much was the last one. Ever since, I switched to Media Temple and they have been extremely reliable with the best support I’ve had.

—-

Isn’t it funny how we ignore common proverbs and sayings because they simply “don’t apply to us”? Well, right now I wish I could kick myself for not paying attention to the old saying:

“you get what you pay for”.

To make this sour story short, I have a hosting account with LunarPages (LP), which works for as long as you don’t need support from them. I recently opened a new account for hosting ASP.Net web pages and found that LP’s control panel was a pain to use. I contacted support and requested for this service to be removed.

Today I wake up and find this on my inbox:

This email is to confirm that your hosting account with Lunarpages has been deleted.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat? I then opened my browser and started visiting all the domains that I currently host with LP. Down. Down. Down. Down. These guys had deleted the account which had about 20 domains, and all of them were down.

After managing to speak to a customer service rep, I was pretty much told that this was my fault because I did not specify which account I was referring to, which leads me to 2 things:

This was pretty much kind of obvious since the message came from a thread where I was having issues with the ASP.Net account.

If they were in doubt, they should have asked.

Regardless, I asked how quickly they could get things back up and I was told that “in a couple of hours everything should be fine”. Well, 4 hours and 3 additional tech support calls have passed (each of these calls outs you on hold for good 20 minutes or so) and my sites are still not online.

I am on my fourth call and I have already in the meantime opened an account with MediaTemple, which I will immediately switch all accounts.

This experience has taught me valuable lessons:

You can’t expect good support with cheap hosting companies.

The techs of these accounts in no way friendly, and each tech you speak with creates a new problem because they don’t care what the previous tech did to alleviate the problem.

Your issues with cheap hosting companies will not be resolved quickly, be ready to hold 20-30 minutes on the phone for them to pick up.

The last tech support call pretty much deleted ALL my sites and I am calling to restore them, but I don’t know if this will be possible. I have backups for most all published sites, but still, this should have never happened in the first place.

So please, think twice if you decide to go the ‘cheap’ way with hosting companies such as LunarPages. Think how valuable your time is and how pissed off your customers will be when you can’t resolve hosting problems because of your hosting companies incompetence.

I’m just hoping I can save someone a lot of pain and it only makes sense to write in Spanish to reach a broader audience. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with something worth your while.

Just came back from “México Lindo” a restaurant (don’t know if it can be called like that) in the corner of Central Avenue and Alvarado Niles Road in union City, CA. As I opened the door, I was hoping to enter a somewhat authentic mexican atmosphere, but was immediately greeted with some dance hip-hop shit. Well, I had been driving for a while and was hungry, so I just waited to be sitted.

I chose a table close to the entrance, where I had a panoramic view of what was going on in the restaurant. Next to me was a table of about 20+ people, all Mexican who were (I guess) celebrating something. The waiter came over and handed me the menu. I immediately asked if he spoke Spanish and I started asking him questions on the menu, every question he replied back with an English answer. This started to get on my nerves, if I switch from English to Spanish, it’s because I would like to continue the conversation in SPANISH, but no, this dip-shit came back with “More chips?” “Another beer?”, and my blood boiled every time.

I then switch my attention to the table next to me. People stood up and come over to talk to the elderly couple at the end of the table. Everyone who came over was speaking in English, and even though it was pretty good English, there was an accent anyone could detect.

So my question is, what the fuck? Have Mexicans in California reached that point where they rather sacrifice their heritage in order to look seem more ‘american’? I just got back from México (Monterrey and México City) and the people down there were incredibly amazing and authentic, funny and proud to be from México. The people I saw tonight were pathetic at best, you don’t change who you are by speaking a fucking language. Oh, and the food fucking sucked, which is entirely my fault, can’t expect much when Shakira is playing at an ‘authentic’ mexican joint.

I’ve been trying to to see both sides of the story, trying to “walk on their shoes”. After watching endless, mind-numbing TV reports and reading various articles, I’ve reached the conclusion and my veridic is that…

Before we start with the ruling, let’s start with the case, shall we? I’m talking about the whole Arizona SB1070 law being passed. In a nutshell, this law gives police the authority to request immigration papers / green card, from anyone whom they might suspect is an illegal immigrant.

Apparently, this has caused major issues from Latin illegal and legal immigrants (and super stars as well) in the US. Some are questioning the moral of this ruling that horribly violates the rights of ILLEGAL immigrants in the US. Yeah, that’s right, United States of America – you, as a country, have failed to please those that live illegally in your country. Those fellows that don’t pay taxes, that use the medical services the the citizens of your country pay for, those who simply walk into a country and expect all of their life’s problem to magically disappear into thin air – shame on you!

Although the law might be viewed as discriminatory, this is something illegal immigrants have brought to themselves. I believe that there are very hard working illegal immigrants in the US, but on the other hand, you have an incredible amount of people who are only looking for ways to abuse the power, and this is what messes everything up – for everyone.

The United States is a great country with lots of opportunities, no one is questioning that. About 3 years ago I applied to work at a tech company in the US and was offered a position. I quickly watched my window of opportunity close in my face because there were no green cards available for that year. I moved on, and by moving on, I mean looking for the next best thing without becoming a parasite to the country I was longing to be a part of.

The problem where it stands, sucks donkey balls. So, how the hell do you fix this? The problem is so out-of-hand that apparently passing these drastic laws seems like viable options. And don’t expect this to end this right here, people in the US are getting quite sick of this, and stricter, more demanding laws will undoubtedly follow.

So what will happen? Well, since Arizona is no longer a safe, illegal immigration haven, there will be an incredible exodus of illegal immigrants to other states, which will probably get sick of the whole issue and pass similar laws.

And really, I don’t get what’s all the fuss about this law. Legal immigrants bitch that this is discriminatory because they can be asked to present their papers whenever, which you should not have a problem with if you are a legal immigrant. And, as far as I know, nobody is forcing you to live in Arizona – if you don’t like the legislature, your are free to live elsewhere.

The *real* reason behind the bitching of this law is that there are thousands of illegal immigrants in Arizona, and their families are scared shitless that grandpa and grandma might be deported because of their illegal status. I know it sucks, but you have brought this problem upon yourself, if you hadn’t broken the rules, there wouldn’t be anything to fear.

BTW, if you wonder about the pic on this post, it’s an e-mail sent from a friend of mine that read:

Hey everyone out there! We, in Arizona, know you’re boycotting us — but you really should come out here and see our beautiful Sonoran Desert.

It’s just gorgeous right now! We know you’d love it and maybe you can share what you saw with the rest of the country so they can love it too! This is on an ‘illegal super – highway’ from Mexico to the USA (Tucson) used by human smugglers.

This area is located in a wash, approximately 1.5 miles long, just south of Tucson, Arizona. If a flood came, all this would be washed to the river and then onto the sea!It is estimated over 5,000 discarded backpacks are in this wash. Countless water containers, food wrappers, clothing, feces, including thousands of soiled baby diapers.

Wait, what? 5? Yes, 5 commandments. I’m following the spirit of George Carlin (tried to find a link but YouTube is being a dickwad) and only following 5 things in your life to be a better person. While this might have nothing to do with the original 10 commandments, or might be a complete ripoff thereof, here are the list of things that I believe should guide you in the right direction.

What is the right direction? It’s pretty much living life w/o being a pain in the ass for someone else. It’s believing that you can be a better being without having to blow up a building in the name of some fucked up prophet. It’s not being hypocritical and try to hide an awful truth comitted against children to save all that you represent (a.k.a. FUCK YOU Pope). It’s about living life to be whatever you want it to be, whilst incurring in the least amount of collateral damage to those that care about you.

I’ll start with the most important and walk my way to the most boring stuff.

#1- Honor thy Father and Mother

If you don’t understand that your family is the center of the universe, you are completely fucked. This is something that has stronger meaning in many countries in the world, but unfortunately not in the US. For some bizarre reason, in the United States it is fairly common for parents to wish that their kids get the hell out of their house and go to college ASAP. It seems like they raised a parasite, and can’t wait a single second to shake the disease. And then, at old age, when their parents are too old to wipe their own asses, they wonder why their sons and daughters find the cheapest retirement home where they can store them until they die.

In Costa Rica, and many other countries, I am pretty sure the vast majority understands that “thou should not only honor thy father and mother” but you should “honor and be ready to die for anyone in your family”. If you parents did a good job, you should feel an incredible force that ties you down to your brothers, sisters, parents. This force is not “god bound”, it is “parent bound”. That is one of the things I have often questioned myself – why look for an ever-knowing, all-powerful being that grants miracles when all you have to do is look up to the people that created you. Yes, I am talking about your mother and father. They are your guiding light, they will die in ten thousand crosses for you in a split second, they would gouge their eyes so you can see and have a better future, and they don’t need a fucking narcissistic book that relates their stories to feel good about themselves.

Look at the sacrifices your parents have made for you, and I am pretty sure these sacrifices would put any god’s deeds to shame. And yet…we look at the sky for some kind of divine intervention, to find out why we are, to make sure we make it to the next life. If you are looking for gods and heroes, look no further than those who you’ve lived to love and trust with all your life. Be there when they need you to, because they will forever stand by you.

And so this leaves with the other 4 commandments, which I don’t even give a shit about. Be there for those who have always cared about you (no deep shit shit, I am not talking about your Facebokk BFFs). Let your folks know how important they are everyday, take care of them for all your life because that is what they have done with theirs for you. Peace!

This post, like many others, was inspired by a post at the Fusil De Chispas, a Costa Rican blog worth reading.

The whole insanity can be explained this way:

Costa Rica was having presidential elections

National polemic arises when church and state separation idea is introduced sometime before the elections.

Some priests advice their sheeple to “remember” who are ones behind this plan and to never vote for them for anything in the future (dirty, dirty move).

The whole idea of separation of church an state goes to hell as most of the people behind it that were initially in favor, back off.

Catholic leaders who sent their threatening message to sheeple go unpunished.

Costa Rica has a new president, Laura Chinchilla, first woman president in CR, by massive victory.

Laura is named “favorite child” of the virgin mary by some dumbass who has religious power in Costa Rica.

(BTW, does this religious leader talks to the virgin personally in order make such announcements? Once more, we have a pathetic little man playing god).

The Catholic Church is aiming to receive MORE money from tax payers.

Are your fucking kidding me?

So here is where we stand. One would think that with the plethora of recent sexual abuses hidden by the Catholic Church, this institution would grow weaker and weaker. But no, not here.

And I don’t know about you, but I’m sick to the bone of watching the catholic church acting as if they were the shit and should get something the taxpayer’s money. Why you, catholics? Why not the protestants, the evangelics, the mormons? What makes your made up fucked up religion so much important than the rest? Aren’t you being unfair? Isn’t this….umm…what do you call this…discriminatory?

All I know, catholic church, is that if your savior did indeed existed, he would barf and puke in disgust to see the fucking marketplace you have turned into by using his name. I really do not expected that much from an institution that on one hand advices their followers to steer clear from alcohol, drugs, and rock ‘n roll and on the other hand owns a large share of stock from the Costa Rican beer company – oh the sweet, fermented irony.

I bought the kindle on August 15th 2009 and I have used it 5 times, so it’s basically brand new. I bought it for $299 and I’m willing to let the whole thing go for $250 (includes the warranty and the leather cover).

Why am I selling it? I bought as a reference book for programming books, which I usually scribble and take notes. The Kindle is not a good candidate for this, but if you would just use it to read w/o taking notes, it pretty much works like a charm.

A little background story on this one. Every 4 years we have presidential elections here in Costa Rica, and yesterday we voted to select the new president. On the day of the elections, all presidential candidates head out to the Church and they pray/communicate with God/whatever.

One of the candidates is divorced and has a very hot girlfriend, just put the damn thing on mute:

The Catholic Church has this rule that if you are divorced, then you are not worthy of the body of Christ. Therefore when they are handing out all the cookies and they are chanting the sheepy songs, all divorced people have to sit in shame. Isn’t Catholic Church swell? I don’t know who is more stupid, the Church for ostracizing their own flock or the divorced people who continue being Catholic when the Church thinks less of them.

Well, since the presidential candidate, Otto Guevara, could not eat the stupid cookie, his mega sweet girlfriend did the communion but wait…wait…she did not eat it. She actually went back to where he was sitting and split the cookie in half and placed it on his pocket:

Not the smartest thing to do, I agree; but does this really deserve an article in a newspaper saying that the Catholic Church disapproves of this act. Or the attention the T.V. stations have smacked on this woman? It’s not like she did it on purpose, and even though, like I said before, was not the smartest thing to do, this was NOT an ill-fated action. She wanted her boyfriend to be in touch with Christ, and that was the best thing she could think of. Instead of watching this as an action of getting closer to Christ, the Catholic Church frowns upon the act and gives a public statement on how incorrect her actions were.

What really amazes me is how people have reacted to this – it’s like she has damned us all to hell for sharing the body of Christ – oh noes! Isn’t that what the fucking clergymen do everyday? They share the body of Christ? What makes THEM so special that a regular human can’t do? I guess liking little boys is a pre-requisite in the “handing out cookies” class in the school of priests.

And can someone explain to me for the love of all that is not sacred, why is this motherfucking cookie so special? What? It’s the body of Christ? I see. So you are treating something man-made as sacred? You are sanctifying a symbol no? Now where did I read something about this…where was it…

“Do not make an image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above…”
Second Commandment according to Wikipedia.

I can has irony?
