Car Seat Tips & Installation Clinics in the GTA

Some parenting jobs never get any easier, and using car seats is one of them. Safer cars, clever engineering, sturdy anchoring systems and updated laws have all helped reduce the number of children who are seriously injured or killed in traffic collisions. But selecting and installing the right car seat for your child — and your vehicle — is still a challenge.

GM Canada Ltd., Baby Car Seat Experts Inc. and Wee Welcome are sponsoring free child passenger safety fitting clinics throughout 2012. Certified child passenger technicians will be on hand to install and inspect baby car seats.

The events will be held at selected General Motors dealerships across the Greater Toronto Area.

Most Common Mistakes & Safety tips

Always read and follow vehicle's owner manual and/or child restraint manual for instructions.

Become familiar with the three stages each baby must to go through (rear-facing, forward-facing and booster seat) and determine when it’s time to graduate to the next stage.

Contact dealership to deactivate side-mounted airbags in back seat before installing car seat.

Must use a base with infant car seats, unless it’s an emergency and a very short ride.

Car seat should "click" when securely attached to the base.

Do not use Universal Anchorage System (UAS) located in outbound positions (i.e. passenger or driver side in back seat) to install baby in centre seat position. Vehicle’s manual usually prohibits it.

Do not install infant car seat in the middle of back seat thinking it's the safest spot. The presence of a fold down armrest can fall on the baby.

Do not use or borrow an expired car seat without checking expiration date.

Do not buy used car seat from stranger without knowing its history (Car seat involved in a crash MUST be discarded).

Do not use rear-facing slots for the harness of a forward-facing seat.

Do not squeeze a rear-facing car seat by pushing one of the front seats too far back (must always leave at least half an inch of space between restraint system and front seat(s))

Do not neglect seat angle or height of shoulder harnesses.

Do not assume that because the seat is tightly secured, it's been correctly installed (i.e. tether is often not attached to the right spot, if at all).

In Ontario, if seat is installed rear-facing, it must achieve a 45-degree angle along the spine (recommended angle may vary in other jurisdictions).

To comply with current laws, ask a dealership to install a tether bolt if you drive an older model that doesn’t have one.

Unlike most brands, Britax and Sunshine Kids convertible car seats MUST be tethered in rear-facing position.

Seat should never be able to move more than one inch in any direction.

Remove loose objects from vehicle as they can become dangerous projectile as the vehicle gains speed.

Make sure harness straps are not twisted, too tight or too loose (Harness should be flat and snug only one finger fitting between straps and child's collar bone).

Do not use a locking clip when the vehicle’s seatbelts already have a locking mechanism.

Booster seats are required for children under the age of eight, weighing 18 kg or more but less than 36 kg (40-80 lb) and who stand less than 145 cm (4 feet-9 inches) tall.

I am getting spring fever. It is in the air, strong like my allergies from this sweet, warm weather we are experiencing.

Which brings me to the reason for this post, a visit to Montreal would be refreshing. Montreal is cosmopolitan, sensual and sensational.

Quebec is romantic, historic and the vibe there is just different then Toronto. I love it. This is the perfect time of the year to stroll along the cobbled streets and smell the fresh flowers that line the street with artisans and little boutiques. My favourite destination with my husband is Montreal - I love exploring Montreal neighbourhoods like Plateau, Saint- Laurent and of course Old Montreal, although somehow that seems a bit too commercial for my liking. That said I do appreciate the gorgeous surroundings and the fact that it is surrounded by the waters of the St. Lawrence.

March Break is next week and if you are like me then you have just started to think about what to do now. As a busy mom I have been working hard to clear my schedule so that I can spend some fun quality time with my kids. I think we have the perfect plan.

I am planning a last minute fun staycation - heading to see Peter Pan at the Toronto Centre for the Arts and then over to the North York Novotel for some pool action and room service! The boys absolutely love having that special time. The trip to the to see Peter Pan within our staycation will make it feel like the perfect get away.

The TCA theatre location is completely accessible with parking nearby, close to the highway and also the subway making it a perfectly stress free designation; making this cultural designation both fun and easy. Celebrate Black History Month at the ROM

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) celebrates Black History Month 2012 with the launch of RasTa at the ROM - an exciting lineup of events around the February 1, 2012 world premier screening of the film RasTa: A Soul’s Journey.

RasTa at the ROM, a new initiative to celebrate Black History Month, was created by In Search of Rastafari Inc. and SNR Agency in partnership with the ROM.

The HD feature length documentary, RasTa: A Soul’s Journey, tells the story of the epic journey of Rita and Bob Marley’s granddaughter, Donisha Prendergast, as she travels to eight countries around the world to explore the roots and evolution of the Rastafarian movement and the many cultures it has influenced. The film follows her travels to Ethiopia, England, Israel, South Africa, Canada, United States, India and Jamaica, while documenting Prendergast's personal transformation and understanding of Rastafari. The film includes interviews with Rita Marley, Damian Marley, UK entrepreneur Ras Levi Roots and poet Benjamin Zephaniah.

RasTa: A Soul’s Journey is executive produced/produced by Patricia Scarlett, produced by Marilyn Gray and directed and written by award-winning filmmaker Stuart Samuels.Following a private world premiere screening on February 1st, RasTa: A Soul’s Journey will be shown at eight free public screenings in the Signy and Cléophée Eaton Theatre at 2:30 pm every Saturday and Sunday throughout the month of February and is free with general Museum admission.

African and Caribbean Cultural Heritage Day, held on Saturday February 25, 2012 at the ROM, will feature live music, dancing, and kids’ activities including face painting and a craft station to make your own headdress. The day will feature performances by Beyond Sound Drummers and Dancers, music by Errol Blackwood, interactive drumming by O’Neil Fuller, story telling by Donisha Prendergast and Itah Sadu of A Different Booklist. My Camp Memories

I am a self acclaimed "Camp Counsellor Mom". My life has revolved around camp. I come from a long line of campy family members. My great grandfather spent time guiding campers through the bush and my father was a Director of Parks and Recreation and I worked in camps through high school and subsequently went on to work for the local recreation department for over 10 years in health promotion. Some of my close friends call me Leslie Knopes from Parks and Recreation and strangely enough Leslie's passionate weirdness inspires me so I am okay with that label.

My first memories of camp are special. My parents sent me to both day and residential sleep over camp. When I was asked to write this post the first memory that popped into my head were how much I looked up to the camp councillors that I spent my camp days with. I remember their cool roots sweat shirts and their tretorn shoes. I loved their hair cuts (bobs) and funny jokes. They were the cool cats.

On the last day of camp I remember a cold morning sitting around listening to Men With Out Hats.

I also remember learning to water ski and canoe. I learned how believe in myself and had friendships that lasted for years. I remember writing letters to my parents and yummy tuck shop candies. Lastly I remember red rocks and bunk beds as well as a feeling of freedom from walking down wooden paths guided only by the flash light.

Really the High Park Zoo?

This weekend the family and I visited the High Park Zoo. We saw a letter posted at the gates indicating that as of July 2012 the High Park Zoo will be closed. Bummer.

My family and I kept walking and bitched about the craziness of it all, then we resolved ourselves to enjoy the moment and smiled as the kids squealed with delight over seeing the animals on a cold winter's day. It was a moment.

I reflected as we walked up the hill that this may be the last time we get to do this. My son, always seeing the bright side of things (as the young do) said... "Mommy we have until June to visit the zoo". Yup. He's right. Months away.

On the way home my son asked me "Mommy why is Rob Ford doing this?

I swear I am not making this up.... I laughed at how he knew the Mayor of Toronto's name - mainly from hearing my husband and I talking about all the cuts he has been suggesting and planning and well just the plain drama of Rob Ford in all his glory. He is an interesting subject to discuss.

I really didn't know how to answer my son's question. I just don't get it. There is no logic. The amount of savings that the zoo closure will result in is a drop in the bucket. Surely there are better cuts to be made that don't effect the quality of life. One less free thing to do in the City with your family. It seems I am not alone in my thoughts of this - Councillor Doucette, the High Park Councillor explains how she tried to save the Zoo & was deemed out of order.

Apparently the Zoo has quite the history that perhaps Rob Ford doesn't share. Check out this photo of folks in the 1900's enjoying the zoo....

2011 Toronto Santa Claus Parade

A fantastic series of animated floats leaves Bloor Street West with marching bands, a couple of thousand over-excited costumed kids and the star of the show - Santa Claus. Toronto's annual Santa Claus Parade is a huge, fun Christmas event.

The parade is a Toronto institution that has been thriving for 100 years. Around 150 clowns accompany the children as they pass along the route, but they are not what they seem - they're actually fun-loving corporate types who pay up to C$1000 for the privilege of donning the clown suit. The Celebrity Clown programme has been running since 1983, a brilliant way of drumming up support for the parade.

The parade runs from the junction of Bloor and Christie Streets via Bloor Street and University Avenue to Dundas Street. From there it passes along Yonge Street, ending at the junction of Front and Church Streets. If you're in a wheelchair, the best way to view the parade is from the special tiers on Front St, across from the Hummingbird Centre.

Just Eat It, Dammit!

We eat all sorts of food in our house - pasta, crockpot dinners, Indian, Chinese, casseroles, and even Sushi. Yes...Timbit eats sushi and use to ask if we could eat "Nemo" for dinner since the Disney character was the same color as salmon. Anyway before I digress as I have a tendency to do...

I always imagined that I'd be like my mom and tell my kids they had to eat whatever I made. Which worked up until Toddler Timbit arrived. This kid has a mind of his own, won't sit at the dinner table, eats when he wants to and what he wants to, and doesn't have any interest in trying anything new. My older Timbit never ate McDonalds, chocolates, undiluted juice, sugar cereals, etc., etc. - we ate healthy and wanted to introduce him to different cultures by way of eating. How wordly of us. And here I am with Toddler Timbit, who ate Chicken McNuggets as soon as he had teeth, drinks chocolate milk (thanks to my current pregnancy addiction to Nesquick - reduced sugar, iron added version of course), and is helping me reduce the Halloween chocolate stock in the house (even though Halloween is still 3 days away).

I assumed Toddler Timbit would be open to trying different types of food just like Timbit was. Nope - he's not. He'll eat naan bread and have nothing to do with butter chicken; edamame beans but won't try the sushi; and garlic bread but not the pasta if it's not Kraft Dinner or smothered in tomato sauce. I find it so frustrating because - DAMMIT! I slaved over the friggin' stove making that damn bacon carbonara sauce for 45 minutes, and he didn't even try it! The audacity of him!

I'm hoping this is just a phase. That he'll eventually open up to trying new foods and eating proper meals - but for now, Toddler Timbit is a grazer. And though he does eat more junk food than he's brother ever did, he surprised me one day when I fed him a hotdog, chips and apple for lunch: he finished off the apple and asked for another, ate the bun, drank his milk, and left the all-beef-don't-ask-which-part-of-the-cow-it-came-from meat product and chips. (Seriously...who leaves chips?!?!)

I guess it goes to show that despite the early introduction of craptacular foods, he has still picked up the healthy eating habits that do go on in our house. I've decided to pick my battles and not force the food onto him. I do make sure there's something in the meal that I know he'll like or at least try. If he's not digging the homemade turkey burgers, then I offer him his favourite - corn on the cob; but only when everyone at the table is ready to eat theirs as well. We have a "safe list" of go-to foods if we find he's not interested in what were eating - but we never give him the impression that he's getting a different meal from everyone else. That's what I grew up with - we all had the same thing for dinner regardless of whether we liked it or not.

Will Toddler Timbit's taste buds eventually match our own? I sure hope so, because I have this insatiable craving for butter chicken right now.

Golfing in Fall Splendour

I have tried to take up many athletic pursuits over the years and I must say the activities that work best for me are definitely those that are in the outdoors. I always feel like I can relax into my exercise more when it is outside. This Fall I am hoping to get out of the City with my family and over to Ottawa (one of my favourite Cities) to take in some sightseeing and I might even hit the Kanata Golf Club called Loch March while I am there as there is nothing prettier than a golf course in the fall wouldn't you agree?

I have to admit I am a horrible golfer but it is fun to ride around in the cart and take a smack at the golf balls!

Golfing can be a great couple's pursuit as you can talk as you walk amongst the course and reconnect with zero distractions. My husband used to golf quite a bit when we were first married but then children came and it was a bit too busy for him to get out on a regular basis. I figure I am okay with him wasting away a whole day for golf as long as I can get waste the day away with him! LOL.

Golf is a great game to practice your patience. If you are an inpatient person by nature then you will find that golf can be frustrating unless you take it as the opportunity to learn how it can improve your ability to remain calm in a tense situation. I can't tell you enough how upset I used to get when I missed hitting the ball. Golf looks so easy but really it is as challenging as say learning tennis.

My sister recently took up golf. She is not what I describe as sport but has really taken to the game of golf and I hope to join her on the golf course one day in Vancouver!

So if you are looking for something fun do this fall as a couple or with your family, consider hitting the golf course!

I Love You Just As You Are

On Sunday night I spent the evening prepping for Timbit's (aka my oldest son) "Star Student" of the week presentations for his grade one class. For each day of the week, he's been given the task to share about himself, tell his favourite jokes, read an excerpt from a book he loves, and bring in items of importance that represent who he is. While filing through photos that were going to be included on his "All About Me" collage, I started thinking about the type of person my little boy is. And then it hit me: He's awesome.

I know - I'm biased being Timbit's mother and all; but really he is, and I'm only publicly acknowledging it now because I have never acknowledged it before in front of other people. I've heard it from his teachers, hockey coaches, friends, and other parents - and they're not just being nice, because there's a sincerity in the way that each person has told me how amazing my little boy is. It's not that I didn't believe them - it's more that I have been caught up in the worry of him becoming what I don't want him to be, than actually seeing him for who he already is. And so instead of saying thank you when receiving a compliment about what a great kid my son is, I'd guffaw and reply with: "Oh you don't see him at home when he's really being himself."

Admitting that he's this great kid is tough for me. I struggle with not wanting to be the mom that brags about her children, while at the same time not wanting to be the mom who bitches and complains either. I've come to realize that I've been blinded by my fears of what he may or may not be, driven by my ultimate fear of what people will think of him and how he will be treated. Timbit is sweet, well-mannered, mild tempered, and super nice. As a matter of fact he's so nice that during baseball, he would say excuse me and run around the opposite teams' players to get onto the bases.

So instead of relishing in moments of pride, I've been so focused on trying to make sure he's not too nice, not too mean, not too talkative, not too quiet, etc...instead of just letting him be. In some ways, I know he's not like other six-year old kids - especially when I see him on the playground or at school before the bell rings. Timbit has this naivety about him when it comes to his peers, and yet he's got this old-soul that makes him so aware of the needs of others. On one hand, he believes in the absolute goodness of other kids that he doesn't understand when they're being mean; and yet, on the other, he has decided to give up his birthday presents to have his friends and family donate to a charity that feeds the poor.

At the end of the day, all these fears that I have boil down to worry. Something that all parents experience from the first moment we meet our children - and something that doesn't ever leave. We all worry about how our kids will turn out, whether we're doing the right thing, or if we've done it all wrong; and whether they will be happy about themselves and who they are. In all this frenzy, we often lose sight of what our purpose is as parents, which is simply to provide acceptance - something that every single one of us wants, needs and deserves.

So instead of trying to create perfection in my kids, I think it's about time I just accept how awesome they already are.

Free Admission at McMichael Art Gallery on Oct 1 & 2, 2011

Not only will the McMichael doors be open Saturday and Sunday, October 1st and 2nd, it won’t cost anything to walk through them! For two days the gallery will offer free admission and parking. The McMichael Canadian Art Collection will mark Culture Days and Doors Open Vaughan with complimentary admission all weekend; visitors will enjoy family programming and kids’ activities, Sculpture Garden tours, Aboriginal storytelling, behind-the-scenes gallery tours, art lectures, and a Jack Chambers Film Festival.

All across Canada galleries and museums are marking Culture Days with special programming and events. It is a national movement initiated by the Canadian Arts Summit to celebrate and promote citizen involvement in cultural diversity. The date for Culture Days coincides with the City of Vaughan’s Open Doors Vaughan—a two-day opportunity for people to gain free access to historical, architectural, cultural and environmentally significant buildings. The McMichael is one of fourteen locations in the city that can be toured for free.

“We are delighted to be actively participating in Culture Days and Doors Open Vaughan, two great initiatives to encourage everyone to get involved with culture in their communities,” said Dr. Victoria Dickenson, CEO and Executive Director of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. “The gallery is opening a major exhibition of works by the well-known London artist Jack Chambers on that weekend, so we are welcoming people not only to tour the McMichael and its wonderful grounds and new Sculpture Garden, but also to see three new shows—Jack Chambers, plus two excellent exhibitions of historic photographs of the North and the Canadian West, from the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. We hope you can join us! ”

Jack Chambers: the light from the darkness, silver paintings and film work, comes to the McMichael from Museum London. Opening on October 1 and running to January 15, 2012, this exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see a selection of works from a specific period in the late artist’s oeuvre. A majority of the pieces in this show were made in the late 1960s when the artist painted works with a silver film-like quality, while at the same time was deeply involved in filmmaking. This exhibition is the first time in decades that Chambers’ films have been shown together with his silver paintings of the period in an exhibition critics have called “sublime”.

Over the opening weekend there will be guided tours of the Chambers exhibition, the permanent galleries, and the grounds. As well, the movies of the internationally renowned artist-filmmaker will be played non-stop in the McMichael Theatre.

There are many other free special programs that will take place during the Culture Days and Doors Open Vaughan weekend. On Saturday, October 1, there will be four different art talks by the gallery’s curators; topics include Inuit art, Modernity in Canadian art, and Norval Morrisseau and his fellow Woodland Artists.

On Sunday, October 2, visitors will have the opportunity to meet Ryszard Litwiniuk, a Polish-Canadian artist who has been artist-in-residence this summer at the McMichael, using trees harvested from the McMichael grounds as the basis for his fanciful wooden sculptures. As well, John Keeshig, a First Nations storyteller from the Midewiwin Lodge will also be outdoors at 2:30 pm recounting the Aboriginal past of the Humber River Valley. Indoors there will be a two-hour free performance of 1940s jazz classics by Toronto’s Satin Dolls.

In addition to touring exhibitions, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection’s permanent collection consists of more than 5,700 artworks, including paintings by the Group of Seven and their contemporaries, First Nations and Inuit artists. The Case for Patience

There are no shortage of disturbing stories in the news on any given day. Some more so than others. This is one of them.

A well-loved teen girl/model student who knew her male friend was depressed and suicidal. She did all the right things --- told her parents, told the guidance councillor. The end was something no one could have predicted. An alleged murder, then suicide. Two families reeling. A community in shock. (Full article below)

Communication in any family is paramount. Unfortunately, given the speed of life today, most of us perhaps don't have the time to dedicate to meaningful, consistent communication, especially with kids as they get older --- like teens, who tend to withdraw naturally.

Most teens would likely not see their parents as the first person to confide in. But they need to have options, especially with the range of issues thrust on young people these days --- from bullying, cyberbulling, peer pressure, relationship-angst, social media concerns, depression...the list goes on.

This time of year, especially, can be a tricky one in many families. The transition to back-to-school is fertile ground for anxiety, stress and worry. For kids and their parents alike.

In seeking out experts to speak on this issue, I've run across plenty of sage advice, but one thought in particular that most parents and kids might overlook. Two words. BE PATIENT.

We all want everything to work out smoothly from the get-go whether it's fitting in, liking a course, being accepted by new roommates at university, getting used to a new schedule, understanding a new course, accepting an empty nest, etc.. However, in our present world of instant gratification and band-aid parenting, it's often hard to be patient. We want to fix it instantly or at the very least minimize the discomfort no matter how trivial the circumstance.

Patience teaches so much. More than most of us understand. It allows both parents and children to appreciate the process, accept the highs and lows and learn from them. It's not always fun, nor is it easy, but it is an important teaching tool no matter what the age.

Communicating with children often requires huge helpings of patience. And when kids are in their tween and teen years, second and third helpings come in handy.

In my interview with a counsellor from KidsHelpPhone, it became abundantly clear that many of the thousands of kids who access this free, anonymous and confidential service do so because they need someone to listen to them. Someone with the patience to listen carefully and not judge.

Who knows what might have saved this clearly disturbed teen boy from taking his own life and that of his best friend. He seemed to leave a trail of fairly obvious hints as to his sad and depressed state --- even on his Facebook page. His best friend, the girl he allegedly killed, seemed to listen to his pleas for help. What's truly sad is that when she sounded the alarm for him---no one seemed to listen.

Cool Tools to Keep You Fit

I have to admit that since becoming a mother of two I find it increasing more difficult to manage my weight. In my twenties and early thirties I had two things I currently don't have. Number one is a weakened metabolism and number two, I have a even weaker sense of self control when it comes to eating desserts. So when I came across this BMI calculator I thought I would access my current weight situation.

When I put in the information into the calculator I have to admit I closed my eyes just as I processed the results. I figured that I would be in trouble but as it turns out I am not in as bad of shape as I thought. My numbers are in check for my height and weight.

There has been some controversy over such tools for evaluating your weight and I am not sure if I would use this a definitive tool to decide on whether your weight is unhealthy. Other important aspects do come into play such as whether you exercise and what your food choices are. For example, my step father would be considered to be in the healthy range yet I happen to know he lives on diet of steak and eggs on a practically daily basis! So I would be looking at other aspects of his health to deem him "healthy" but that is another story.

I think the moral of this story is to eat healthy as best you can, to exercise regularly (AKA Play outside!) and to use tools like the BMI calculator to bench mark success. Children as young as two years old of age should be playing (aka exercising) every day for at least one hour a day. So I make sure to try and give opportunities for my family to be outside each day for at least an 1 hour getting exercise. I think that this is important even if they are with the acceptable BMI levels. Food for thought!
