The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Maryland Chapter, and the Frederick County Department of Aging Caregiver Support Program are pleased to showcase the “Caregiver” documentary from the recently released HBO documentary The Alzheimer’s Project. Please join us for a special breakfast screening of this highly acclaimed film to be followed by group discussion on Friday, August 21 at the Emmistburg Senior Center, 300 South Seton Avenue. Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. with the screening to follow at 9 a.m. Breakfast includes orange juice, scrambled eggs, sausage links, hash browns, pineapple rings, milk, coffee and tea. Suggested donation for breakfast for those over the age of 60 is $4.80; for individuals under the age of 60 is $4.80. Then join us on Friday, August 28, 2009 from 9-11 a.m. for our first meeting of the Breakfast Club. Caregivers and the individuals they care for are invited to join us for a breakfast and a morning of activity, social interaction and fun! TRI-STATE JAZZ SOCIETY Proudly Presents GREAT BRITAIN’S GREAT STRIDE PIANIST NEVILLE DICKIE $20, $15 members, $10 students and first time guests of members Neville Dickie is one England's foremost stride and boogie-woogie pianists. A regular performer on BBC Radio, Dickie has made hundreds of appearances as a soloist or with his trio. One of the few British jazz pianists to score with a hit single -- "The Robins Return" in 1969 -- Dickie has continued to be embraced by British jazz enthusiasts. His 1975 album, Back to Boogie, sold more than 100,000 copies. A native of England's County Durham, Dickie spent years playing piano in working men's clubs. After serving a stint in the Royal Air Force, he relocated to London, where he continued to plow his field in the city's pubs. Auditioned by the BBC, Dickie attracted the attention of Doreen Davies, the head of BBC radio 2. With Davies' support, he became one of BBC Radio's leading artists. Diet has been tied to the biomarkers of longevity as well as noticeable effects on daily well being including increased energy, reduction of inflammation and improvement of memory and cognitive function. Meal time also tends to take on a larger social role post retirement, both for those in senior living communities and those aging in place. Quite simply, the nutritional program is one of the most direct ways to visibly improve the retirement experience. Join us to learn the basics of senior nutrition to the fine points of creating the optimum dining experience to address both general senior needs as well as specific conditions, such as dementia and depression. This is an interactive program that includes a demonstration and a lunch consisting of the results. Chef Bonita Woods grew up on a farm and has maintained a passion for fresh food ever since. She has degrees in hard science and culinary studies and has experience in both Fine Dining and Nutritional Cooking. As a personal chef , she has cooked as for such luminaries as Donald Trump, James Earl Jones, Former President and Mrs. George Bush, Greg Norman. Most recently, Chef Woods converted Sidwell Friends School and The Gables of Mt Vernon Assisted Living Community kitchens from standard cafeteria food to fresh, natural, in-house cooked with fine dining catering, educational programs and consumer involvement with menu planning. Currently, Chef Woods is creating a health inspired food service department for Chesterbrook Residences Assisted Living Community in Falls Church, VA.
