This could be very interesting. I don't recall any other guitarist that in such a short period of time transformed the guitar world quite so much. So far this doco has taken two years to film, and it's still not finished. Hopfully it doesn't run out of steam and go nowhere.

Site Update

Yep. Sites been pretty dead. And frankly, so have I. Here is a quick update from the last few months.

As most know, I just moved about 200kms to a new home, new job, new life really. It was a massive move done very fast and highly stressful. However it has been worth it. My new job is fantastic, if time consuming, and for the first time I can remember I am loving what I'm doing.

Unfortunately, about two months ago I contracted Ross River. This is a lingering virus that has chronic fatigue type symptoms that come and go. So basically my life has been drag myself out of bed, work, come home and collapse. No gym, no guitar, and definitely no updating of the site.

I'm hoping to change that now. I'm starting to feel much better and have a lot more energy. There are still going to be bad days, where I don't post for a while, but they should hopefully be shorter and shorter.

If you have stuck around this long, thank you. Hopefull I can repay your kindness in some way.

Peter at i heart guitar has all the fun. He gets given stuff like this to review. But that's probably a good thing. I'd probably just write the following review...

I've never been a huge SG fan, but this thing is awesome. I love the racing stripe finish. I love the over te top "chunk-o-chrome" tail piece. I love how flexible the tones are with the advanced pickup options.

Damn you Gibson.... damn you.

Gibson Les Paul Florentine with Bigsby

It's good to see I'm not the only one who gets angry with Gibson.

Look at this magnificent guitar. The Florentine, with it's elongated cutaway, and in this model with the additional Bigsby remolo unit is absolutely beautiful. Top it off with the Tobacco burst finish and I am in absolute heaven.

Except for one thing.... the price.

With a RRP of well over $4000, who can actually afford this stuff. And to make matters worse, with a "limited run" guitar coming out nearly every week, who can collect all these. it's almost as if someone in charge of either design or manufacturing has A.D.D. and gets bored.

"Hey guys, we made 6 of these guitars already, lets try something different".

You just need to look at some of the comments on the Gibson site for this guitar to see how people feel. Argus summed it up beautifully:

Another week, another "limited run" guitar. How many of those 250 Jeff Beck Oxblood's you still got sitting around that you can't move? These LP's are nice enough but even your collectors have to be getting fatigue. And then there are the prices. But hey, you don't care anymore. BTW are you throwing in any of your likewise overpriced T-shirts from that ridiculous online Gibson store? That's the only way you're going to move that crap.

And that comment is on the page for the Florentine.

It's a shame as it is such a nice guitar.

Gibson has never backed away from its pioneering ways, and the new Les Paul Florentine with Bigsby Tailpiece is simply another example of its determination to combine the Les Paul’s legendary characteristics with avant-garde features to keep it one step ahead of everything else. This new 2009 Limited Run Series guitar from Gibson USA combines the classic appointments of the iconic Les Paul with a few of Gibson’s most functional attributes. First and foremost, the standard Les Paul cutaway gives way to the wider Florentine Cutaway. Normally found on such historic Gibson models as the Byrdland, the ES-175 and the ES-295, the Florentine Cutaway design comfortably enhances a player’s reach to the higher register of notes. Second, and most prominent, is the addition of the chrome Bigsby vibrato tailpiece, which allows players the ability to bend the pitch of notes or entire chords for vintage-style vibrato. A white graphite nut, locking Grover tuners and Schaller roller bridge all work in conjunction to keep the guitar in tune and offer better string control when using the Bigsby. Of course, the body is traditional Les Paul – solid mahogany back topped by a AA-grade maple top with single-ply antique crème binding, smoothed with Gibson’s classic Vintage Sunburst finish. The neck is the standard Les Paul mahogany neck with Gibson’s new asymmetrical profile and rosewood fingerboard. A pair of Gibson’s renowned BurstBucker Pro™ pickups offer slightly higher output and allow amps to achieve a more natural break-up. They are packed with asymmetrical coils — true to Gibson’s original PAFs — which supply a more open sound. The BurstBucker Pro™ Neck is wound slightly less than the original PAFs, while the BurstBucker Pro™ Bridge is slightly overwound for increased output. Like all the guitars from this special series, only 350 of these unique Les Pauls will be produced and distributed. Each one will come with a black Gibson hardshell case and special Limited Run Series certificate of authenticity.

Do we need another Creed album?

Mark Tremonti what are you thinking? I love you bro', but putting Alter Bridge on hold for a Creed re-union? Alter Bridge is what Creed should have been if it wasn't for nut job Scott Stapp.

If you don't remember, Creed were gigantanormous in the late 90's. They sold 35 million albums worldwide and had hits such as 'Arms Wide Open" and "Higher".

Don't get me wrong, I was a defender of the faith. I did my time in the trenches against all the Creed haters. And although they scoffed with the inevitable breakup, I was vindicated by Alter Bridge, showing that the band at it's musical core was an unstoppable force. But now Stapp is back, and they are going to try again.

I really do hope it works out. Honestly, I do. It just better be as good as Alter Bridge.

Don't let me down Mark.

This is a very cool concept I would love to see in Australia. Can't afford a classic guitar for your hot studio session coming up, or want a hot axe for that photoshoot? Then call Guitar Affair.

Guitar Affair has announced general availability of its offering that has been in testing with select customers since January. The new Guitar Affair service targets guitar enthusiasts who frequently travel for business as well as those who wish to demo limited availability guitars prior to purchasing them.

Under the new program, customers can rent a variety of high-end and boutique guitars, and have them shipped to any location in the US; be it their residence, a hotel where they are residing for business, or a vacation location. In addition to well known guitars like Gibson and Fender Custom Shop guitars, Guitar Affair has struck dealer relationships with small and boutique manufacturers whose guitars are seldom seen in stores. For those who are trying a guitar prior to purchase, Guitar Affair rebates the rental fees when the customer elects to purchase a guitar. The new service allows guitar enthusiasts to enjoy high-end instruments wherever they are, and to demo boutique instruments that would often have to be purchased without trying them.

Guitar Affair allows interested players who may be on the fence about a brand they haven't seen every day of their lives to try it for themselves in the comfort of their own home. The rental and demo service is currently available in the United States with plans to expand internationally in 2010.

I really do like this idea. I couldn't find on the site how much it costs, but it does have a $50 fee just to apply, so I'm thinking it won't be cheap, but still definitely worth the expense.

Has anyone used this service yet? I'd love to hear some feedback on it, especially considering they are looking at going international with it.

50th Anniversary Airline 59 Custom 2P

I'm sure Jack White will be happy with this one. Eastwood, the company that White brought back from the dead, celebrate the 50th anniversary of there famous Airline model.Mind you, the fact the company probably only operated for what, half that time, is not the point. East was the first, and as far as I know only manufacturer to add rubber as a FEATURE on a guitar. RUBBER!!! Pure genius!

Gibson, Gibson, Gibson. Everytime you make me want to blow up your factory for the crap you spew out, destroying your established heritage bit by bit (look for upcoming rant soon), you tease me with such a delightful little titbit that I fall in love with you all over again.

Here is the first glimpse of the Billy Gibbons Pearly Gates 59 Les Paul model that is being developed by the evils demons at Gibson. The colour sample test is on the left if you can't work it out. Gibbons is one of my favourite guitarists of all time, so if Gibson screw this up, then I will be very, very angry.

Michael Kelly has been constantly releasing great looking guitars for a while now, and this one is no different. The Michael Kelly Patriot Decree Electric Guitar features a set mahogany neck and mahogany body, rosewood fretboard, and Grover tuners.

Two things that really appeal to me about this guitar is the string-thru-body design and the fantastic set neck.

Oh, and this finish is really pretty.

HBE Frost Bite Flanger

I love a good flanger. And this has to be one of the best I have heard in a long time. it has that right amount of bite to it, that right amount of metallic sheen. I love it.

The Homebrew Electronics Frost Bite Flanger is a double sized flange pedal that is loosely based on a vintage ADA model. With 6 knobs and a mini toggle, there aren't many flange tones this analog Homebrew Electronics Frost Bite Flanger can't get.

And in a nod to MXR, I love the giant knob used for the enhance mode control. Fantastic!

Dweezil Zappa’s Rig From Hell

If you have a spare 17 minutes then this is one of the most in depth look at his rig used for the Zappa plays Zappa tour (which I just missed I think). This rig is HUGE, and utilises a lot of components that were used by his father Frank Zappa.

Surprise of the video for me was the Hagstrom guitar he rates very highly. I've been a fan of them for a while and that really made my day.

Ahhh 1958 – I remember it well

Move nearly complete

Hey guys,

Things went a little belly up on the move. Our fantastic telephone provider (Telstra for those who know Aussie IT&T) completely ballsed up the the line connection, and has ended up delaying my new phone numebr and hence new net connection by upto a week. I'm doing this from the missus's uni lol. I start my new job tomorrow, and will be commuting for the first three weeks until I get my company car, so updates may be a little sporatic until then.

I'll be back to normal as soon as I can.
