Sanyo, who make arguable the best batteries in the world have realised there is a sizable niche for high capacity batteries in the world of musicians, and have released the Eneloop Pedal Juice Rechargeable 9v Power Supply. This is a small, stompbox sized device designed to bridge the gap between battery power and mains power.

The idea is a simple one. Charge up the Pedal Juice, plug your gear into it and have the benefits of mains but with the portability and ground loop free-ness of battery. Sanyo claim that the Pedal Juice can power a single 9v pedal for 50 hours on one charge, and that is quite a feat. So I decided to test it out.

Following the instructions, I charged the device for four hours. This is where I had my first problem with the device. The unit I was shipped only contained a US adapter. I'm sure this is just because of the test unit I received and that retail boxes will have region specific adapters, but it was a little annoying. Thankfully I had a great multi region adapter handy that I could use.

The next problem is not really a fault with the unit itself but a standards issue. The Pedal Juice comes with a nice daisy chain power cable that lets you plug in five devices. However I have a few pedals that require a different jack. Again, I have adapters for this issue, but it would have been nice to seen this taken into account in the boxed unit.

Apart from these issues, things went smoothly. I plugged everything in and hooked up all my pedals. For the record, I connected an MXR Phase 90, Ibanez Digital Delay, Tech 21 XXL, Behringer Tremolo and Behringer Tuner. The first thing you notice is there is no line noise, the ground loop is gone. I also found that even in a loop free environment, my pedals effects sounded a little crisper, which I think is due to the constant nature of the power coming over direct DC power rather than drawing from a 9V battery.

With the five pedals on the entire time I let the unit run out of juice. I was surprised how long I actually got. With Sanyo claiming 50 hours for one 9V device, I got a surprising 12 hours with all five pedals attached. That is quit a good effort.

If there is one thing I wish it did, it would be to support 12V devices. Although it claims to handle multi effects, in reality a lot of those types of devices required more than the 9V supplied by the Pedal Juice. I don't have any around I can test it with so I can't be sure if it would be up to the task.

All things considered, I think this is a great product. Once I am playing live again with a full rig, this will definitely be taking a spot on my pedal board.

When I started this site, blogging was still fairly new, and I had grand designs. Sure, those initial plans didn't pan out, but I really enjoyed what I was doing so I kept at it. When I eventually monetised the site it became a lot more fun. At its peak, the site was pushing a thousand unique visitors a day, and generating enough income to cover my rent. I really thought that if I followed the plan I had developed on this site with several others I may even be able to take up blogging full time.

This success came at a price. I started blogging about guitars because I love guitars and making music, but the more time I spent on the site, the less time I was spending on the very reason I started the site in the first place. Playing music. The more I posted the less I played. The more I read, the more chops I lost.

But the money was still there so I kept going. Until I had to move and change jobs.

No longer was home only 15 minutes from work. Home became an hour away each day from work, and exhaustion set in (as well as a bout of Ross River Virus – which I still haven’t fully recovered from). Finding time to post was getting harder and harder, and all my beautiful guitars lay in their cases, neglected and alone. Even the studio was never put back together.

Income dropped but it still covered a few of our bills. So I continued when I could, but never quite doing the quality I wanted to.

Then Ebay changed their commission structure.

Just like that, I lost 90% of the site’s income. I started looking for alternatives, and when review products finally started coming in, I switched to Amazon Associates. But fatigue, lack of time and my own need to do everything perfect led to me never getting around completing the reviews the way I wanted (and to those companies that have sent me products I have not yet reviewed – I apologise).

Then I got Google Slapped.

I’m not really sure why, but my Google traffic dried up, and so did my visitor numbers. I have been trying to claw it back, with a little success, but with the above mentioned constraints it has been difficult to do.

All the while I have been working on re-invigorating GTB, I have found myself getting distracted. The fingers are itchy. The guitars have come back out. I am playing again and really not interested just in guitar news any more. I’ve been researching DAW software, live sound equipment, and also guitar gear. I’m finding a passion for playing and performing and writing I have not felt in a long time.

And that is why I must say farewell to GuitarToyBox.

I need to be making music with my guitars again. I need to be musically creative. I need to play. To this effect, I have relaunched Chris Watson Music. This is a site about my music, making music, loving music, performing music. Not that you would know it as there is basically no real content on there just yet, but it is growing. This is my new focus. I plan on documenting what I learn, what I create, what I enjoy. And that does not leave time for GTB.

I want to thank everyone who has come by, read and enjoyed, left comments, and all those people who bought items through my affiliate links. I want to thank all the manufactures who have sent me equipment (that will be reviewed over at the new site, I promise). And I want to thank Jon and Peter at GuitarNoize and iheartguitar respectively. Even though I don’t really know either of them, their sites, quality of posts and success has been inspirational to me in ways they could never understand. If you are looking for some great guitar sites you cannot go past these two guys.

I've decided I'm going to cross post any guitar related reviews I do over at Chris Watson Music on this site as well. So this site will get the occasional update, but as said, Chris Watson Music will still be the priority.

I need a digital radio, so why not one that goes to 11? And believe it or not, this one does! Made from vinyl and wood, with brass controls and a metallic speaker grille, the EVOKE-1S has a 3-inch drive unit, active filters and goes all the way up to 11 on the volume dial. The OLED screen displays audio info and there are 30 station presets. It can also act as an alarm clock, has 24 hours battery life, and has a USB connector for firmware updates, along with a headphone jack and AUX-in for connecting MP3 players. It comes with a stand-alone Marshall speaker for a further £35 ($60), if you need even more volume. That's a full stack digital radio right there!

On sale in the UK for now, it’ll retail for £120 (about $210) at HMV from August or other retailers in September. I just wish it had a guitar input so you can jam along.

Jon at GuitarNoize has a great video demo of the Electro-Harmoix POG2 Polyphonic Ocatve Generator. This is an insanely versatile octave pedal that I think would be so much fun to play with. It is again up to the typical weird standards of EH and if I had my way I would own every single one of their pedals.

Either I'm getting dumber of fuzz pedals are sounding better. Never been a fan, never thought I would be, but this thing sounds fantastic. I am especially impressed by how it cleans up when the volume is rolled back. With enough controls on this to get you pretty much any fuzz tone possible, the Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder pedal looks quite fun.

The Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder is in some ways a classic fuzz/distortion pedal, but with some unique tones that set it apart from the pack. Stomp the bypass and you'll get a muffy fuzz that you can tweak with volume, tone, and distortion knobs, or take into Stoner Rock territory with a flick of the Timewarp switch. The Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder 's Toneblast bypasses the tone control, giving you more midrange and more volume for solos, or as a useful contrast from the standard fuzz flavor. A momentary feedback loop can be triggered with the Feedback stomper and tuned with the Tune knob, introducing a little controlled chaos into your chugging riffery. The trim knob is useful for cutting the mud that can result from high output pickups, letting you easily match this pedal to any rig.

I almost do need this. Not quite sure where I would put it, but the show off in me would love to have this just to scream "I'm cool cause I play lots of guitars"!

Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz has opened a thread on the official Gibson forums where he is responding to user questions about all things Gibson.

Obviously this is a PR stunt, but you know what? I think it works. This could have been a total disaster, but Henry J's responses are polite, well thought out, and to me seem completely genuine. Here is a great example:

"So, Mr Gibson, my first question is this. You sell a Tony Iommi signature SG. Supposed to be accurate to the players own specifications right? Well, when I last checked he was left handed. Hmm, so how come you only sell it as a right handed guitar? Seems a little silly to me. "

Response:
"Good point.

Left hand guitars are a real problem for us, not because they are difficult to produce, but very difficult to sell through our channel partners. The guitars often do not look different when hanging on the wall and they tend to get lost in the merchandise selection. With reduced sales volume, both large retailers and small ones avoid carrying them entirely. If they do carry left hand models it is limited in stock. The result is we do not get many orders for them.

Our policy has been to run a batch of left handed guitars, once in a long while, and have inventory stock available for an order when it comes in.

This system has not worked well for our valuable left handed customers or ourselves. I will be forming a group a Gibson to see if we can somehow address this unmet need."

I really rate that as a great response. There are a few angry trolls in there, but he is doing a fantastic job. If Gibson can turn this cynical guitarist back in their direction is some way, surely it is working on more.

I have always liked the Jazzmasters. I think it comes from the popularity these instruments had during the 90's grunge era. They also have a strange tone, not quite Strat or Tele, but not to full, that I really enjoy.

Damn, hope he is ok. Perry is one of my favourite guitarists, but lets face it, after all the drugs he has taken, and the fact he is getting on a bit, he surely must be getting pretty brittle.

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry was injured in a motor vehicle accident this afternoon in Middleborough, police said.

Perry was transported to Morton Hospital and Medical Center in Taunton following the crash, which occurred shortly after 2 p.m., police said.

He was treated and released from the hospital, which admitted him under his real name of Anthony Perry, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police identified Perry as the operator of a motorcycle that was struck from behind by a sedan on Route 44 eastbound.

The accident occurred near the intersection with Route 105. It was not immediately clear if Perry was driving at the time or stopped in traffic.

The identity and the make of the sedan being operated by the second driver was not immediately available.The incident is under investigation by police.

Police identified Perry, the Aerosmith guitarist, as the victim in the crash.

I'm not generally a fan of straight out fuzz pedals, but this has some really nice sounds. Seems quite versatile too.

I always thought what made a signature series special is that it was a limited offering of your favourite guitarist's guitar. It appears I am wrong. Gibson have just launched two more models of their Slash signature series.

The Custom Shop Slash “Appetite for Destruction” Les Paul is crafted in the image of an original 1958-’60 Les Paul Standard, and available in strictly limited numbers, with 100 guitars hand-aged and signed by Slash himself, and another 300 finished with the Custom Shop’s VOS process. All examples carry a uniquely figured maple top with nitrocellulose Butterscotch finish, amber top-hat knobs, rosewood fingerboard with traditional trapezoid inlays, and packs the added punch of “zebra-coil” Seymour Duncan Signature Series Alnico II Pro Slash humbucking pickups, at the artist’s request.

It is sprayed with nitrocellulose lacquer in a Butterscotch finish that replicates a beautifully faded vintage Les Paul Standard. To Slash's own specifications, the Custom Shop Slash “Appetite for Destruction” Les Paul carries a set of “zebra-coil” Seymour Duncan Signature Series Alnico II Pro Slash humbucking pickups, which are made in the image of the original Gibson PAF humbucking pickups. From a rich, throaty wail at the neck position to a muscular, eviscerating roar at the bridge, these pickups offer all the tonal versatility that has made the Les Paul Standard famous. Their full splendor is transmitted via a Switchcraft selector switch, high-quality potentiometers with Sprague capacitors, and a robust Switchcraft output jack.

In the image of the great Les Paul Standards of the 1958-’60 the Custom Shop Slash “Appetite” Les Paul wears a classic set of aged nickel-plated hardware. A Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece offer uncompromising resonant coupling between strings and body, while a set of Kluson-style tuners combine an authentic vintage look with efficient modern performance. (The hardware on 100 guitars is hand aged, while hardware on another 300 is aged in the VOS process.)

The more I hear this amp, the more I want one when it come out. To me, this is the PERFECT ROCK TONE, and Appetite For Destruction is the perfect rock album. Have we every heard anything that close to the sound of that album? I don't think so.

Thomas Nordegg was Frank Zappa's guitar tech back in the day. Later, he became guitar tech for his son, Dweezil Zappa, and for former guitarist in Frank Zappa's band; Steve Vai! Thomas Nordegg has quite an impressive effects setup, including lots of TC Electronic gear, and a bunch of rather unusual guitars that can pull off some amazing tricks! I think the only thing this guy is missing is an evil minion.

This is by far and away the most insane, mind boggling setup I have ever seen. For some reason though, I can see Matt Bellamy having a lot of fun with this rig.
