Les Paul Dies at 94

This is tragic news to wake up to this morning. Guitar legend, inventor and pop music hit-maker Les Paul has died at age 94. Paul died of complications from pneumonia at White Plains Hospital, surrounded by friends and family, in White Plains, N.Y.

From the obituary:

One of the finest pickers on the American music scene, Paul was often cited as a major influence on other guitarists, including Chet Atkins, who called him "one of my idols."

But for many other music fans, it was Paul's innovations that will ensure his legacy. They include an early electric guitar as well as new ways to create multiple tracks and echo effects for recordings, which he used in his recordings with Ford and which were later were broadly adopted by other musicians.

I don't believe, in my opinion, any one many has made as much as an impact on modern music as this man. Not only did he invent the electric guitar as we know it today, modern recording studios would not exist without Paul's countless innovations. The most far reaching of course is multi track recording. Without that, music today would be very different indeed. He was also an amazingly talented guitarist in his own right, still gigging weekly at his local club.

Although his name will never be forgotton, lets make sure that the man behind the legacy is never from our hearts an minds.

Lately I have become a huge fan of Twitter. At first I didn't get it, but know I see how useful it is at getting quick messages and thoughts out to people. It's also a great way to make new contacts, and that is something that is slowly happening for me.

I can't stop listening to Dark Clouds & Silver Linings, the new Dream Theater album. It is an absolutley killer. So this video really got my attention today. The way the guy plays is mindblowing.

I've always found him in older videos to be a bit of a self important wanker, but he seems much more relaxed in this one. And he sure as hell can't be taking himself seriously with that facial hair.

MI Audio Crunch

I'm not quite sure how they have done it, but MI have squeezed a classic Marshall amp into this little pedal. Well, not literally, but they sure as hell got the tone in there. I also love the fact that Mi are fellow Australians, and all these pedals are hand made here. Fantastic!

It has arrived. The Gibson Billy Gibbons Pearly Gates Limited Edition Les Paul Standard (or as I like to call it - GB GP GLELPS for short lol) is now available.

Sure, it's another relic'd guitar. But this is one I want. i mean, FFS, it's Billy Gibbons. Sure its probably going to cost about $8000, and at least you have the option to go with a non-relic'd version, which is a good thing.

I don't know much about ART320, but I know what I like... The finish one is absolutely stunning. I think I'm turning "blue" with envy.

Squier release John5 Telecaster

Now this is awesome. The man who makes me love chicken pickin'... no not Satriani, but John 5, has just released a new Squier version of his awesome Telecaster range. It's called the Squier J5 - original isn't it!!!

The video above is the bog standard Squier with just a string change. Otherwise it is straight out of the box. A quick search online has also show that the people with these already are going ga-ga over the quality and wormanship. That is great news to here from a "budget" guitar.

I sure wouldn't mind one of these. The only electric Fenders I tend to like are the Telecasters.

John 5 is a self-described “Fender® fanatic” with a jaw-dropping collection of his favorite instrument, the Telecaster® (“the greatest guitars ever built, by far,” in his words). His Squier signature model, the J5 Telecaster, is a double-bound beauty based on his oft-modded workhorse Telecaster, which was pieced together at the Fender Custom Shop.

Features include John 5’s distinctive black-and- chrome look—a double-bound alder body with a gloss black polyester finish, a polished stainless steel pickguard and chrome hardware. The one-piece maple neck has a modern C shape, a matching black Telecaster headstock and a 12”-radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets.

The custom-designed humbucking pickups use a special dual-volume setup with the bridge pickup control in the front position and the neck pickup control in the back position (5 prefers this setup because he spends much time giving the bridge pickup a workout). Rapid toggling the upper-bout three-way pickup switch gives you 5’s signature “kill” effect by turning off the neck pickup volume and leaving the bridge control full up.

Randy Rhoads Documentary Trailer

Site Update

Yep. Sites been pretty dead. And frankly, so have I. Here is a quick update from the last few months.

As most know, I just moved about 200kms to a new home, new job, new life really. It was a massive move done very fast and highly stressful. However it has been worth it. My new job is fantastic, if time consuming, and for the first time I can remember I am loving what I'm doing.

Unfortunately, about two months ago I contracted Ross River. This is a lingering virus that has chronic fatigue type symptoms that come and go. So basically my life has been drag myself out of bed, work, come home and collapse. No gym, no guitar, and definitely no updating of the site.

I'm hoping to change that now. I'm starting to feel much better and have a lot more energy. There are still going to be bad days, where I don't post for a while, but they should hopefully be shorter and shorter.

If you have stuck around this long, thank you. Hopefull I can repay your kindness in some way.

I've never been a huge SG fan, but this thing is awesome. I love the racing stripe finish. I love the over te top "chunk-o-chrome" tail piece. I love how flexible the tones are with the advanced pickup options.

Damn you Gibson.... damn you.

Gibson Les Paul Florentine with Bigsby

It's good to see I'm not the only one who gets angry with Gibson.

Look at this magnificent guitar. The Florentine, with it's elongated cutaway, and in this model with the additional Bigsby remolo unit is absolutely beautiful. Top it off with the Tobacco burst finish and I am in absolute heaven.

Except for one thing.... the price.

With a RRP of well over $4000, who can actually afford this stuff. And to make matters worse, with a "limited run" guitar coming out nearly every week, who can collect all these. it's almost as if someone in charge of either design or manufacturing has A.D.D. and gets bored.

"Hey guys, we made 6 of these guitars already, lets try something different".

You just need to look at some of the comments on the Gibson site for this guitar to see how people feel. Argus summed it up beautifully:

Another week, another "limited run" guitar. How many of those 250 Jeff Beck Oxblood's you still got sitting around that you can't move? These LP's are nice enough but even your collectors have to be getting fatigue. And then there are the prices. But hey, you don't care anymore. BTW are you throwing in any of your likewise overpriced T-shirts from that ridiculous online Gibson store? That's the only way you're going to move that crap.

Gibson has never backed away from its pioneering ways, and the new Les Paul Florentine with Bigsby Tailpiece is simply another example of its determination to combine the Les Paul’s legendary characteristics with avant-garde features to keep it one step ahead of everything else. This new 2009 Limited Run Series guitar from Gibson USA combines the classic appointments of the iconic Les Paul with a few of Gibson’s most functional attributes. First and foremost, the standard Les Paul cutaway gives way to the wider Florentine Cutaway. Do we need another Creed album?

Mark Tremonti what are you thinking? I love you bro', but putting Alter Bridge on hold for a Creed re-union? Alter Bridge is what Creed should have been if it wasn't for nut job Scott Stapp.

If you don't remember, Creed were gigantanormous in the late 90's. They sold 35 million albums worldwide and had hits such as 'Arms Wide Open" and "Higher".

Don't get me wrong, I was a defender of the faith. I did my time in the trenches against all the Creed haters. And although they scoffed with the inevitable breakup, I was vindicated by Alter Bridge, showing that the band at it's musical core was an unstoppable force. But now Stapp is back, and they are going to try again.

I really do hope it works out. Honestly, I do. It just better be as good as Alter Bridge.

Don't let me down Mark.

Click to listen now. I'm really digging "Down The Drain" at the moment. that song has the best grooves I have heard in a while.

This is a very cool concept I would love to see in Australia. Can't afford a classic guitar for your hot studio session coming up, or want a hot axe for that photoshoot? Then call Guitar Affair.

Guitar Affair has announced general availability of its offering that has been in testing with select customers since January. The new Guitar Affair service targets guitar enthusiasts who frequently travel for business as well as those who wish to demo limited availability guitars prior to purchasing them.

Under the new program, customers can rent a variety of high-end and boutique guitars, and have them shipped to any location in the US; be it their residence, a hotel where they are residing for business, or a vacation location. In addition to well known guitars like Gibson and Fender Custom Shop guitars, Guitar Affair has struck dealer relationships with small and boutique manufacturers whose guitars are seldom seen in stores. For those who are trying a guitar prior to purchase, Guitar Affair rebates the rental fees when the customer elects to purchase a guitar. The new service allows guitar enthusiasts to enjoy high-end instruments wherever they are, and to demo boutique instruments that would often have to be purchased without trying them.

Guitar Affair allows interested players who may be on the fence about a brand they haven't seen every day of their lives to try it for themselves in the comfort of their own home. The rental and demo service is currently available in the United States with plans to expand internationally in 2010.

I really do like this idea. I couldn't find on the site how much it costs, but it does have a $50 fee just to apply, so I'm thinking it won't be cheap, but still definitely worth the expense.

Has anyone used this service yet? I'd love to hear some feedback on it, especially considering they are looking at going international with it.

I'm sure Jack White will be happy with this one. Eastwood, the company that White brought back from the dead, celebrate the 50th anniversary of there famous Airline model.Mind you, the fact the company probably only operated for what, half that time, is not the point. East was the first, and as far as I know only manufacturer to add rubber as a FEATURE on a guitar. RUBBER!!! Pure genius!

But jokes aside, these guitars have become some of the most collectable and well loved instruments of many players, not just the above mentioned Mr. White.

Gibson, Gibson, Gibson. Everytime you make me want to blow up your factory for the crap you spew out, destroying your established heritage bit by bit (look for upcoming rant soon), you tease me with such a delightful little titbit that I fall in love with you all over again.

Here is the first glimpse of the Billy Gibbons Pearly Gates 59 Les Paul model that is being developed by the evils demons at Gibson. The colour sample test is on the left if you can't work it out. Gibbons is one of my favourite guitarists of all time, so if Gibson screw this up, then I will be very, very angry.
