Gibson doing something right?

Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz has opened a thread on the official Gibson forums where he is responding to user questions about all things Gibson.

Obviously this is a PR stunt, but you know what? I think it works. This could have been a total disaster, but Henry J's responses are polite, well thought out, and to me seem completely genuine. Here is a great example:

Question
"So, Mr Gibson, my first question is this. You sell a Tony Iommi signature SG. Supposed to be accurate to the players own specifications right? Well, when I last checked he was left handed. Hmm, so how come you only sell it as a right handed guitar? Seems a little silly to me. "

Response:
"Good point.

Left hand guitars are a real problem for us, not because they are difficult to produce, but very difficult to sell through our channel partners. The guitars often do not look different when hanging on the wall and they tend to get lost in the merchandise selection. With reduced sales volume, both large retailers and small ones avoid carrying them entirely. If they do carry left hand models it is limited in stock. The result is we do not get many orders for them.

Our policy has been to run a batch of left handed guitars, once in a long while, and have inventory stock available for an order when it comes in.

This system has not worked well for our valuable left handed customers or ourselves. I will be forming a group a Gibson to see if we can somehow address this unmet need."

I really rate that as a great response. There are a few angry trolls in there, but he is doing a fantastic job. If Gibson can turn this cynical guitarist back in their direction is some way, surely it is working on more.

Aerosmith guitarist crashes out

Damn, hope he is ok. Perry is one of my favourite guitarists, but lets face it, after all the drugs he has taken, and the fact he is getting on a bit, he surely must be getting pretty brittle.

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry was injured in a motor vehicle accident this afternoon in Middleborough, police said.

Perry was transported to Morton Hospital and Medical Center in Taunton following the crash, which occurred shortly after 2 p.m., police said.

He was treated and released from the hospital, which admitted him under his real name of Anthony Perry, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police identified Perry as the operator of a motorcycle that was struck from behind by a sedan on Route 44 eastbound.

The accident occurred near the intersection with Route 105. It was not immediately clear if Perry was driving at the time or stopped in traffic.

The identity and the make of the sedan being operated by the second driver was not immediately available.The incident is under investigation by police.

Police identified Perry, the Aerosmith guitarist, as the victim in the crash.

The few that I have seen have been great, and even if the artist is not someone I am really into, I always learn something new. Sometimes just a different perspective is utterly enlightening.

I'm not generally a fan of straight out fuzz pedals, but this has some really nice sounds. Seems quite versatile too.

I always thought what made a signature series special is that it was a limited offering of your favourite guitarist's guitar. It appears I am wrong. Gibson have just launched two more models of their Slash signature series.

The Custom Shop Slash “Appetite for Destruction” Les Paul is crafted in the image of an original 1958-’60 Les Paul Standard, and available in strictly limited numbers, with 100 guitars hand-aged and signed by Slash himself, and another 300 finished with the Custom Shop’s VOS process. All examples carry a uniquely figured maple top with nitrocellulose Butterscotch finish, amber top-hat knobs, rosewood fingerboard with traditional trapezoid inlays, and packs the added punch of “zebra-coil” Seymour Duncan Signature Series Alnico II Pro Slash humbucking pickups, at the artist’s request.

The Custom Shop Slash “Appetite ” Les Paul is crafted from a uniquely figured maple top and solid one-piece lightweight mahogany body. It is sprayed with nitrocellulose lacquer in a Butterscotch finish that replicates a beautifully faded vintage Les Paul Standard. The maple-mahogany combination and thin nitro finish help to bring the most out of these guitars, both tonally and visually.

Everyone needs a few CDs in their arsenal to use as, "Show Off" recordings for their car audio system or home stereo. This is one of them. The mix, clarity and production of this CD is outstanding. Crank it up!The music is great too. I became a fan of Lee Ritenor after picking up his "Wesbound" CD on which he pays tribute to Wes Montgomery. But make no mistake, this is NOT a smooth jazz recording. It's a mix of blues, jazz, fusion, rock and even classical. There's something here for everyone.I HIGHLY recommend this record!

The first tune, Lay It Down, with Ritenour and John Scofield sets the tone. They have a scorching "call and response" that takes up about the lasst two minutes of the song. Gentlemen, would you consider doing a duo project - wow! Each genre of songs is awesome for its kind: the blues tunes are awesome, the rock tunes are awesome, the acoustic tunes are awesome. Fnatastic CD!

Thomas Nordegg was Frank Zappa's guitar tech back in the day. Later, he became guitar tech for his son, Dweezil Zappa, and for former guitarist in Frank Zappa's band; Steve Vai! Thomas Nordegg has quite an impressive effects setup, including lots of TC Electronic gear, and a bunch of rather unusual guitars that can pull off some amazing tricks! I think the only thing this guy is missing is an evil minion.

This is by far and away the most insane, mind boggling setup I have ever seen. For some reason though, I can see Matt Bellamy having a lot of fun with this rig.

Solid Gold FX Electroman

I don't often get excited by delay pedals, but the Solid Gold Electro man does something a little different. The momentary switch "Warp" drives the pedal into self oscillation, and the sonic possibilities of this are "warping" my mind. The other feature I love is the Tone control, which shapes the tone of the delays from bright and digital like, to dark and analogue (which is my preferred setting on this).

The Solid Gold FX Electroman Delay pedal has 800 milliseconds of delay time and several interesting features that set it apart from the delay pedal pack. First among these is a momentary Warp Switch that sends the Electroman into instant self-oscillation when the Repeats are set above 10 o clock, and acts as a kill switch for the delay signal with Repeats below 10 o clock, letting you sculpt some unusual delay tones. The Solid Gold FX Electroman also features an effects loop for the delay signal, giving you the option to affect your repeats with modulation, pitch shifting, overdrive, or anything else your twisted, black heart desires. The standard controls, including level, repeats, and time, are also included, and a tone knob lets you darken or brighten your delay signal at will.

The new 3rd Power American Dream 112 all tube combo, that's what!

Looking like it was designed by some strange triangle cult - though not as much as it's big brothers, the HLH Speaker Cabinets, The American Dream is a recreation of both the Fender Blackface and Fender Brownface amps from the 60's.

The new American Dream is a tube combo design featuring a switchable-power tube amp paired with a single 12-inch Celestion Vintage 30 loudspeaker (Alnico Gold available as an upgrade). Selectable between 22 and 10 Watts of output, the amp section features a two-stage preamp using a combination of 12AT7 and 12AX7 tubes, with 6L6 tubes on the output stage. The two-channel American Dream is voiced to achieve the tones of the classic ’62 brownface Deluxe on channel one, and the ’65 blackface Deluxe on channel two. Each channel features a switchable Bright circuit, and there’s also a global Presence control for final sweetening. The cabinet design incorporates 3RD Power’s innovative triangular speaker chamber – an internal enclosure that eliminates the standing waves inherent in conventional parallel-side designs. For additional variety of tone, the back panel sports a removable Switchback port to enable open-back operation and even wider tonal possibilities.

I want this so bad I’m tremolo-ing in my boots

Tremolo is such an under-rated effect. When people think of tremolo, they usually think of some slow twanging country/western track, or surf music. While that may be true, there is so much you can do with it, as shown in this video.

The Earthquaker Hummingbird is a unique, stuttering tremolo pedal based on the vintage Vox Repeat Percussion, but with some improvements to reduce noise and enhance control. The Earthquaker Hummingbird stands apart from the crowd with a choppy character that lends itself well to machine gun percussion sounds, synth-like pulses, and numerous more subtle tremolo tones. Pair it with a fuzz for some truly mangled interactive textures. Depth, Rate, and Level knobs provide deep control, and a fast/slow switch changes the LFO rate for a ridiculous range of available speeds.

If you need to add some extra texture to your sound, don't skip over tremolo, the little battler of the effect community!

New Ozzy Guitarist Likes Black Fire

One of the things I find annoying about a lot of the current heavy music genre is that so many of the guitar tones sound the same. The tone coming from this pedal is not. Sure it is heavy, crunchy, but to my ears it has a certain X factor that makes it stand out somehow.

I could also be talking from my ass, but I don't care. I think this things sounds awesome.
