Guitar tabs are useful sight reading alternative for guitar music reading. What are guitar tabs? Basically they incorporate an easily comprehensible system for you to know how to play a piece. You can learn to play a guitar solo piece reading a guitar tab. You can also learn to play a guitar rhythm by reading a guitar tab.

The only disadvantage of guitar tabs vs real notation reading is that they will not have exact rhythm and timing spelled out for you as you do sight reading.  I would advice players to use sight reading as a useful skill and incorporate it into their guitar playing arsenal, but take caution not to become over reliant on tabs until you lose the ability to improvise your playing. You’d be stunned. Ive seen people as old as 73 learning guitar. C’mon. Dun tell me you are too old to learn. Excuses and procrastination is the Number 1 killer of potential guitar heroes. I have coached kids the age of 12 and they have sinced manage to shred the guitar with confidence and jammed with guys double their age. So there is never a wrong time to learn. Here are some tips to play like Mr Steve!

1. Vai uses Lydian mode (play the 4th note on a major scale as the first note and end on the next 4th- eg: F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F) extensively combined with pentatonic runs. Memorise the Lydian scale on the entire fretboard.

2. Master the tremolo bar. Incorporate pinched harmonics into tremolo dives to create high pitched bird like cries! Give it to her baby!

3. Get an ibanez or better still, get a Ibanez Jem 6V or 7V Electric Guitar for tone likeness.

4. Get into his mindset & style: Be Psychedelic! (leather pants & long hair optional!)

5. Master his classics like “For the Love of God“. Listen to all his songs often.

Okay, the title is controversial, but the point is to shred so fast and perfectly that your friends thought you are not human with Malmsteen and Michael Angelo as your siblings. What are the secrets to playing dazzling fast solos on your guitar? Here are some tips! 

1. Focus on mastering your speed on a single or few scales first (maybe pentatonic or major and minor scalees to begin with). If you can master speed on a single scale, you can apply what you learnt to ALL scales.
2. Incidentally if you are interested, both malmsteen and Michael Angelo uses alot of phrygian mode and harmonic minor scale runs.
3. Pay attention to picking efficiency, that is, do not cheat but make sure your left scaling hand and right picking hands are perfectly coordinated
4. Always focus on repetitive finger exercises everytime you pick up a guitar as warm up.
5. Incorporate sweep picking of arpeggios & finger tapping into your solos. Please make sure you do a clean job and not some uncoordinated sh*ts- that will really make seem like trying too hard!
6. To sound really fast, master “drill picking” or alternate picking
7.  Practice with a metronome, gradually upping the tempo until your granny’s house catches fire (jus kiddin!)
