Quantum Q-Wave A101 Dual SIM

The 10inch Quantum Q-Wave is an Android tablet from BDL, one of the established IT players in the region. With the Q-Wave, we wanted to see if BDL can match its IT sales and marketing prowess with the kind of innovation that makes a tablet stand out in a tight mobility market.

Design

From the get go, the Q-Wave feels like a solidly-built machine, on the heavy side but not bulky. The unit I had in my possession had silver back with a black strip on the top.
The black strip reveals a panel under which the slots for a dual SIM set up and SD card are located. Oddly, the strip is sealed very tight and you have to literally pry open the panel to get to the compartment. The power and volume button are on the right in landscape mode.

One feature I particularly liked was the thin bezel making sure that the Q-Wave is not as wide as others in its class. Interestingly, Quantum has installed a physical “back” button-which acts like a home button on your smartphone-on the top right of the tablet, a unique feature I haven’t seen on any other tab.

Key Specs

The Q-Wave runs on ARM’s Dual-Core Cortex A9 at 1.2GHz with a 3D graphics engine. We would have loved to see quad-core but unless you are a serious graphics-heavy multi-tasker, a dual-core processor is more than enough.

SIM support in tablets is still something of a novelty

, but having a dual SIM on a tablet is truly rare. The dual SIM support GSM and 3G WCDMA-this is one way BDL’s IT marketing comes to play I believe as the company is uniquely aware its products sometimes reach markets in the region where mobile phone standards are varied.

The tablet has very few apps bundled with nothing beyond the major social media and communication apps. Of course with Google Play, all the apps you need are at your fingertips, literally.

Sadly, the cameras are not the most powerful we have seen, even at the entry-level market, with just a 0.3MP at the front and 2.0MP at the back-to put that into context, some new high end brands have 2MP at the front and 8MP at the back. In terms of photo quality, those differences are major-Other features are standard including a 2-Speaker system, Bluetooth, GPS and FM Radio. Google Translate

The latest version of Google Translate offers major new features that put the app on this list. In the old version, I entered text and Google Translate provided the trranslation. With the new version of Google Translate, I can:

Type the text, which is the default.
Speak the text that I wish to translate. When I stop speaking for just a second, Google Translate outputs the original text and the translated text.
Hand write the text, with my finger. Google translate did a good job of translating my sloppy finger writing.
Take a picture of a sign. Google Translate sends the picture to their servers for translation.

Both the inputted text and translated text have a speaker icon next to them, for translating the text to speech. There is just one female voice provided, but it is clear and understandable. For the translated text, there are icons to copy the text, share the text, and expand the text to very large print.

The conversation mode takes translation to the next level. With the conversation mode, the input is from the microphone, and Google Translate speaks the translated output. Google Translates also prints the inputted text and translated text on the screen. It is not the fastest way to have a conversation, but it works. Does this remind anyone of the translator on Star Trek?

Sharing text to Google Translate has also changed. In the previous version, sharing text to Google Translate resulted in only the header being translated. Google Translate now translates the whole page, in the browser window, and it is fast. I simply had to share the page to Translate.

Google Chrome

While the Android Robot (Portal Movil) browser has improved, it still is no match for the Android version ofGoogle Chrome. The Android version has the look of Google Chrome, with its tiled front page of most visited sites. Yet, Google Chrome for Android was designed for the mobile experience:

There is no limit, other than hardware resources, to the number of tabs that I can open. I have never tested the limit, as I rarely have more than eight tabs open at one time. Tapping the tab icon gives a stacked list of open tabs. To delete a tab from the list, I just swiped it off the screen.
Bookmarks are easy to access from the home page, which is the default page for a new tab. The star icon at the bottom of the page provides access to the list of bookmarks.
One very handy feature is the ability to see the tabs that I have open on other devices. I simply have to be logged into the same Google account from each Google Chrome browser. If I open a tab on my netbook, I see the shared tab within a few seconds on my Samsung Galaxy S III. At the same time, when I open a new tab on my netbook, the home page screen shows an icon for other devices at the bottom of the screen, with a list of open tabs for each device.

I now use voice search as my normal way of doing a Google search. I set Google Chrome as the default browser, so the search results appear in Google Chrome. As I open Web pages, the URLs appear, within a few seconds, on my netbook. I still use the netbook for writing, but now use the Samsung Galaxy S III for doing research.

Scan

Scan is a QR Code reader that is super easy to use. With other QR code readers, I have to physically take a picture of the QR code to process it. Scan, on the other hand, processes the QR code as soon as it is in the square box on the screen. Depending on the options set, Scan either redirects to a Web site, or prompts first.

Scan is so easy that there is not much to say about it. There is a icon to turn on the camera flash, if needed. You can also see the history of the codes that you have scanned. Simplicity is what makes this a great app.

Skype

The updated version of Skype supports the front camera for video calls, although it does not officially recognize the characteristics of the front camera for the Samsung Galaxy S III. It still works. I just ignored the warning message, which indicates that the front camera may not be used with it full resolution. While there are other alternatives for VOIP communication, Skype remains the most recognized. It is easy to install on any device, and Skype to Skype calls are still free. With the Samsung Galaxy S III, Skype contracts are integrated into the contact list, and can be easily linked with other contacts, to form a single contact entry for each person.

Evernote

I described why I use Evernote last April in the article “Evernote in Costa Rica – Pura Vida.” The latest version of the Evernote app is even better. The navigation has improved, and there is now the ability to sort Notebooks. There are even more options for managing a note. Evernote remains my favorite app for keeping track of all my research, writing, and all notes that I want to share between devices. It was one of the first apps that I installed my Samsung Galaxy S III.

Facebook is introduced a new features on its chat windows i.e. facebook video calling.
To make video calls on Facebook you need webcam-equipped computer and then select a friend you want to video chat with. In the chat window that pops up, clicking on a small blue video icon brings up the video chat feature and the first time you will be prompted to download and run a 482KB .exe file. If your msn, google, hotmail, yahoo everythings works but twitter pages not open, then I have to say why is it doing that and how can i fix it? Go to internet server, go to TOOLS, OPTIONS, PRIVACY TAB and in blue writing it will say you may want to CLEAR YOUR RECENT HISTORY or REMOVE ALL INDIVIDUAL COOKIES . Click REMOVE ALL INDIVIDUAL COOKIES and then when your done press OK button and go to the website. If nothing there maybe something wrong with the website provider so the website would be facing issues, someone may have blocked it like put parental control on you can unblock websites just type in google unblocking websites and many links should pop up. If not there could be something wrong with your pc. Twitter and all that could be overloaded with too many online or someone may have blocked out social networking sites because facebook and twitter are popular sites there could be a lot of people on at the same time and the websites can not run too much memory in their system that is why it might time you out. If that can not help you phone your internet provider and they will probably put you onto a technician incase your internet provider has run into doubts with these websites or is facing problems.
If that does not work take it a technician. That is all i can say you may find that a few methods may not help you but hey you looking for an answer i have a bunch of them and i am saying at least one should work why not try it. Best of Luck.

There have been rumor suspended around of a WiFi only Xoom making its way from side to side the FCC, but now we’ve got video of a silver Xoom from Dubai, which means it must be GSM. I am really eager that not only will the GSM Xoom make it to the U.S., but also that there will be a WiFi only option. The Xoom looks like a killer piece of hardware, but the price is at rest too high. There requirements to be options in the pricing like a WiFi only tablet. The iPad has sold very well, but I can’t envisage that the bulk of those sales be from the $729 3G/32GB model. I’m willing to bet that additional than half of the sales came from the WiFi only 16GB model at $499 or the 32GB model at $599.
