07/18/08 - 50 Cent On The Hip-Hop Industry, 'I Feel Like I Got Something To Prove'

50 Cent has become vocal about his difficulty in marketing hip-hop within todays music industry and its effects on making his final Interscope solo release, Before I Self Destruct.

In a video from ThisIs50.com, the G-Unit leader weighed in his opinions on the tough times most rap albums are experiencing and his need to regain the top spot he once held. “I feel like I got something to prove again, musically,” he said. “It feels like its not based on the actual music. Its just a weird climate right now.”

Admitting that in the past record sales were based on how many plays a particular song received on the radio, 50 explained the industry is even more complex today.

“It doesnt even go based on radio spins,” he explained. “Like its so confusing because I wanna say its radio spins and then it simplifies the situation. And it makes it about that and then its not about that. I mean its confusing because these people are appreciating the music Im making now and I dont see the same response, like according to the G-Unit album.”

Claiming the streets needed the album despite poor sales, he added that the recent trend in record sales has made him reconsider his marketing strategy for his next album.

“It makes me re-evaluate what Im going to present for Before I Self Destruct,” he said. “I dont want to go through the process of pushing the album back four and five times. Look how many times they pushed Waynes album back to build anticipation. Is that what it takes? Like I gotta make you think my albums coming out for 10 months, straight?”

Continuing to show the industrys shifting record sales, 50 concluded by comparing recent hit singles of the year by top artists whose album sales have had disappointing sales.

“Snoop album had the best radio airplay “Sensual Seduction,” thats a big record,” he explained. “Sales didnt reflect that. Thats a case where radio spins didnt mean anything. You know what I mean? Usher went with the “Love in the Club.” Same deal. Number one joint all across the board. Remix with Beyonce.”

07/17/08 - Judge Gives 50 Cent 14,400 Mins With Lil' Cent

Judge Gives 50 Cent 14,400 Mins With Lil' Cent

A Long Island judge granted him an unrestricted visit from August 3-12 with Marquise, his son with Shaniqua Tompkins. We're told that both parties had to submit to drug tests at the courthouse before the judge would talk visits, and 50 was clean. Shaniqua tested positive ... for cough meds.

Our spies tell us that Shaniqua claimed in court that 50 is keeping her from using her Land Rover SUV by keeping guards at the site of the house that was engulfed by flames last month. He denies that's the case. Baby mama drama continues on September 15.
07/17/08 - 50 Cent Wants To See His Son, His Baby Mama Had A Positive Drug Test

Mama to 50 -- Holla At Ya Boy!

50 Cent is in court today to fight for more time with his son Marquise -- but Marquise's mama says that he might want to start by actually talking to him on the phone.

Shaniqua Tompkins told us going into court that her son talked to Papa Cent on his birthday July 6, but Fitty hasn't talked to him since! Meanwhile, baby mama apparently needs new kicks -- her heel broke on the way in!

We just heard that moments ago, both Fiddy and Shaniqua had to take a drug test, and the results will be back any minute. (Fiddy was clean, but Shaniqua tested pos ... for cough medicine.)

50 Cent 'wants to see his son,' lawyer says

Rapper 50 Cent may reach millions through his hits, but he hasn't seen his son since a Suffolk judge last month signed an order enforcing the hip-hop star's right to do so, his lawyer charged in court Thursday.

"He wants to see his son," said lawyer Brett Kimmel, of Manhattan, who arrived with the rapper for an 8 a.m. court appearance in Central Islip family court.

But Shaniqua Tompkins, who is mother to the hip-hop star's 11-year-old son, Marquise, is concerned about her son's safety after a fire that tore through a 5,200-square-foot Dix Hills home that he owned and she occupied. Tompkins has publicly accused the rapper of setting the blaze.

"She wants Marquis to have access with his father, but with safety precautions in place," said Paul Catsandonis, Tompkins' attorney.

Tompkins, Marquise, and four others escaped the blaze through a second-floor window. They suffered smoke inhalation. Authorities called the blaze suspicious and are investigating it.

50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, arrived a few minutes before the scheduled appearance Thursday in a white fedora, mint dress shirt and designer jeans. He waited in a hallway corridor, staring out a hallway window.

Tompkins arrived late and sat opposite him down the hallway, but within eyesight.

"I want justice," she said to reporters.

Family Court Judge David will consider how to proceed on two motions: a protective order he granted for Tompkins last month, and a petition to enforce Jackson's visitation rights.

Last month, Jackson served Tompkins with a $20 million anti-defamation lawsuit filed in Connecticut, where he has a home, seeking damages for public accusations Tompkins made accusing Jackson of threatening her life a week before the fire.

In a third courtroom in Manhattan, Tompkins is suing Jackson, whom she was romantically involved with before he became a famed rapper, for $50 million, saying that she helped him attain his stature and is entitled to part of his estate.
07/16/08 - Young Bucks DJ: Don Juan Speaks About The Fuck G-Unit Incident

M.H.H.- How did you come in contact with Buck and the Unit for the first time, and how did you start working with them?

D.J.- From early 2001 until bout late 2005 I was DJing at the majority of the major events in Nashville, and was always employed at whatever club was jumping. So when Buck got signed it was inevitable that we would bump into each other. When Straight Outta Cashville dropped I bumped into Buck at this corner store called Paul's Market, and gave him a mix cd (titled My Way). After I gave him the cd he remembered me from the clubs and a previous DJ luncheon earlier that month, and started talking to me about possibly hitting the road with him. He told me what he would pay me and said he wanted a DJ from Nashville, but he wanted a new, young dj, to reflect him and his new wave for the city. So I was ready to hit the road, but it never happened. I waited over 2 years before I got a phone call from Buck. He called me to come out to his crib to scratch on a record. I did some scratching, he liked it, everyone was happy. So I started coming around more, hanging close and getting a feel for being around him and his atmosphere. Buck The World was in final preparation and it was time to start promoting the album. So he handed me an Instant Replay and said lets go. I didnt event know how to use the machine, but God has favor upon me. Our 1st show was in Memphis and after the show the driver, my homie Clint, said, "Man, you wouldn't even know that was ya'll 1st show". So I did every show from that day on until the show in Tampa where the infamous "FUCK G-UNIT" statement was made. God had been weighing on my heart the whole time I was running with Buck that I was not there to be a DJ, but a representation of God and God's word. I try to walk for God as much as possible. Im far from perfect but I believe in progress, stability, structure, and trying to do things as God says. Therefore, a lot of my actions, thoughts, reasoning and motivation would be completely opposite of what Buck would do. He does believe in God and Jesus but he's not in God's Word, in my opinion, enough to be on the same page with me as a Christian. I felt like God told me the evening before 50 leaked the Phone Call that it was time to shift into a new season. So I told those closest to me what I was about to do. The next morning the call is out and my phone is blowing up. So I waited till that Thursday to tell Buck I couldn't do the shows anymore. He was reluctantly supportive, but nevertheless supportive and thats the last time I've spoken with him.
07/16/08 - Val Kilmer Opens Up About 50 Cent

Val Kilmer Opens Up About 50 Cent, Batman's Nipples And The Long-Awaited 'Real Genius' Sequel

The star of new indie film 'Felon' humors us with a trip down memory lane

By Josh Horowitz

Christian Bale may be the Batman of the moment, but did the star of "The Dark Knight" ever tell Tom Cruise he could be his wingman anytime? Did he do a dead-on Marlon Brando impression in a movie in which the legendary thespian actually starred? No. Those distinctions apply to Val Kilmer, who, as the youngest actor ever accepted to Juilliard back in the day, was an acting prodigy if there ever was one.

The hits have been harder to come by in recent years (his winning role in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" didn't get the attention it deserved), but Kilmer soldiers on. His latest film, "Felon," in which he stars as a prison legend alongside Stephen Dorff, opens in limited release this week.

Kilmer recently stopped by MTV for a lively trip down memory lane (did you know the set of "Willow" was a hotbed of sexual activity among little people?), some rumor control (he addressed reports that he's going to play Van Halen's David Lee Roth in a film) and talk of a new friend he's found in 50 Cent.

MTV: This is a dark role for you.

Val Kilmer: Ric Waugh wrote a fine script. It's very accurate about prison, which is overwhelming. Not in a good way. And I told him so, that I just didn't want to feel like that. I didn't want to play a guy that dark. And he kept talking and I kept being polite, saying politely, "Thank you. I really like your ideas. But I just want a sitcom. That's where I'm at. Anything with Will Ferrell in it. That's what I want to do." it was just too compelling.

MTV: I heard you just worked with 50 Cent on a film?

Kilmer: I worked with Mr. Curtis Jackson.

MTV: Didn't he give you a rather extravagant gift?

Kilmer: Yeah, he did. He gave me a car.

MTV: How does that happen?!?

Kilmer: It was quite shocking. It's a 1965 Impala convertible. He knows how close I am with my kids. And it was actually cruel that he would take over as the centerpiece of their affections with an object. You may have been shot nine times and you may be the #1 rapper on Earth, but I know where you live. I'm going to wait until you're asleep, and you're going to wake up screaming, buddy. He's still got a slug in his tongue. And yet he gets up in the morning and makes a living speaking. Amazing.

MTV: You've dabbled in music. Are you a better singer than Curtis is an actor?

Kilmer: I'd have to say he's a better actor. He's very effective. He's a real genuine, kind man. He made a song for my kids.

The NewYork judge in 50 Cent's child custody case has allowed the rapper's lawyer to stay in the case despite 50's ex-girlfriend claiming that there was a conflict of interest.

As reported earlier, Shaniqua Tompkins, 50's ex-girlfriend and the mother of his son, asked the judge to remove Brett Kimmel from the case because she sought legal advice from him in 2005.

Tompkins claimed she called Kimmel to talk about child support, palimony and her financial interest in 50 Cent's movie, Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

According to The Associated Press, Judge Carol Edmead allowed Kimmel on Tuesday (July 15) to stay on the case because he never created an attorney-client relationship with Tompkins.

Edmead will determine who will have custody of the former couple's child and who will collect insurance money on the $2.4 million Long Island house that burnt down in May.

Tompkins, who lived with 50's son in the house, has publicly claimed that 50 Cent orchestrated the fire. 50 denied the allegation and shot back with a $20 Your browser does not support inline frames or is currently configured not to display inline frames. million defamation suit against Tompkins, currently pending.

50 Cent and Tompkins have been fighting over the house after the rapper attempted to have her evicted from the home unless she paid rent.

The cause of the May fire has not been determined.
The war between 50 Cent and mother of his preteen son Shaniqua Tompkins wages on. Now, she wants his lawyer booted from the case.

Tompkins says Fifs attorney Bret Kimmel actually gave her some legal advice in the past, before their current custody battle began, so hes privy to her strategy. Her lawyer plans to ask a Manhattan judge today to remove Kimmel from the case due to conflict of interest, according to TMZ.

Tompkins will also set out to keep Fif from collecting insurance money on the house she once publicly said he burned down. 50 denied the allegation and shot back with a $20 million defamation suit against Tompkins, currently pending.
07/14/08 - Young Buck To Tony Tayo, Lets Fight.

Young Buck To Tony Tayo, “Lets Fight.”

Young Buck took the the air on XM satellite radio and challenged Tony Yayo to a boxing match.

“As far as Yayo talking about he wanna fight, Ill do it,” Buck said, according to UDub News. “Ill do it off of real nigga shit I swear on my childs life. If they line this shit up, where me and that nigga can go in a ring, we can put that shit on VH1. We can make that shit real life. Ill have Floyd Mayweather training me. Ill knock that niggas fat, flabby, old non-rappin ass out.”

The two former friends turned foes first butted heads during another Buck radio appearance. During the aftermath of Yayo allegedly assaulting the son of The Games manager, Buck rebuked the actions. The comments led to the beginning of the end for Buck and his inclusion in G-Unit.

07/14/08 - LL Cool J Talks About New Album, G-Unit & More

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Give it up to LL Cool J. You can't say that the legendary master of ceremonies isn't putting in work. He dropped his Return of the G.O.A.T. mixtape with DJ Kay Slay a few weeks back, and he says the reception was so good, he's thinking about putting another one out. Yes, two LL street CDs in one year.

Keeping in tune with the streets, he's also made a number of guest appearances both officially (Alicia Keys' "Teenage Love Affair") and as a pleasant surprise to the artist who made the original (G-Unit's "Straight Outta Southside").

"I loved getting onstage with G-Unit the other day," Cool J told us about joining the Unit at a recent New York concert. "It was fun, crazy. The crowd, like, exploded. They went crazy. I got a lot of love for 50, and he definitely inspired me and kind of tweaked this newfound hunger that I have to keep."

Cool said that his friend Fif never hit him up directly for any advice, but he said it's not out of the realm of possibility that he inspired 50 as well.

"He may be watching me," Cool J said. "This is my 24th year. So we're in a whole different — we in two different realms. I'm definitely happy for him, excited for him. I know where he's at, he's only on his third or fourth album. My fourth album was Mama Said Knock You Out. I know what that is, when you're brand-new to the world. I just hope that he enjoys the longevity that I'm sure he'd like to enjoy as an artist."

LL's Exit 13 comes out later this year. The first official single is "Baby," featuring The-Dream.

"I made the records I felt from my heart, and I believe the people will respond to great music," he told us in May. "And I got Def Jam, the whole building, behind me. We're the new Lakers. The energy is great." ...
07/13/08 - LL Cool J & 50 Cent Link-Up

LL Cool J has teamed up with 50 Cent for his upcoming album.
New York rapper LL, real name James Smith III, has written an entire album worth of tunes with Fiddy, and plans to showcase a handful of them on his latest album, Exit 13.
Speaking to All Hip Hop, LL revealed: “I did a whole album with 50, I did an album by myself, then I went and did another album by myself. “I decided to use like two or three songs from the album I did with 50, one from the second album I did by myself, and the rest is all new material.”
The Mama Said Knock You Out rapper also told how 50’s work ethic had inspired him, but that fans should not expect him to try to “out-gangsta” the In Da Club star.
He explained: “Watching him work made me hungry again, but it was also important for me to come out with an LL Cool J album that doesn’t sound like I’m trying to be 50 Cent. I’m not doing that.” Orange asked Polydor, 50 Cent’s UK record label, for comment but they could not respond in time for this story’s publication.
LL Cool J’s 13th album, Exit 13, is set for release on August 26.
07/11/08 - Mobb Deep Sue Former Manager Over Infamous Archives

Mobb Deep has reportedly filed a lawsuit against their former manager for releasing their recordings without permission.

According to TMZ, Mobb Deep claim that Norman 'Purfek Storm' Bell released a batch of their unreleased songs via a two disc compilation titled Infamous Archives in 2007 without their consent.

The New York rappers claim that Bell profited from the compilation and owes them over a million dollars in back royalties.

Bell could not be reached for comment.
07/10/08 - LL Talks Exit 13; Denies Signing To G-Unit

After a 2 year hiatus, veteran LL Cool J is gearing up for the release of Exit 13, his 13th and final LP under his Def Jam recording deal.

Unlike his other albums, the Farmers Boulevard legend has worked closely with another Queens native, rapper 50 Cent.

“I did a whole album with 50, I did an album by myself, then I went and did another album by myself,” LL disclosed to AllHipHop.com. “I decided to use like two or three songs from the album I did with 50, one from the second album I did by myself, and the rest is all new material.”

Some have expressed concern that LL may pattern himself after 50s more successful albums, such a Get Rich or Die Tryin, a claim the MC quickly denied.

“Watching him work made me hungry again, but it was also important for me to come out with an LL Cool J album that doesnt sound like Im trying to be 50 Cent,” LL clarified. “Im not doing that.”

LL also dismissed rumors that he was attempting to sign to G-Unit over his dissatisfaction with Def Jams promotion of his last album.

“There were a lot of, for lack of a better word, doe-does out there that were like ‘LL is going to sign to G-Unit,” the veteran laughed. “I dont know what these guys were thinking. Why would I work for 20 years to sign to another artist? I dont know where the stupidness came from. I dont think they understand who theyre dealing with and the reason why Im here.”

LL openly criticized former Def Jam president Jay-Z about his work in promoting rap albums on the label.

Now with a new regime, he feels rap projects including his own, will get the attention they deserve.

“Before Lyor and them left we did a deal and I got my full catalog. LL Cool J owns his whole body of work. Im very happy about the growth Def Jam has experienced,” he revealed. “Now, do I feel the Hip-Hop side of the music needs more attention? Yes. I think Hip-Hop will be served more now that Shakir Stewart is up there doing what he does. People are excited about Hip-Hop. People are excited about my project and I know its going to succeed.”

Exit 13 is set for release on August 26.

The album features production from DJ Scratch, Tricky Stewart, and Raw Uncut.

Guests include KRS-One, Jim Jones, 50 Cent, Lil Kim, Trey Songz, The Dream, and Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi.
