Byron brings us his year-end...

“A Very Gunkcast Xmas!”

Byron brings us his year-end finale for Gunkcast! This episode is loaded with lots of cool holiday music (some of which we are certain you haven’t heard before). Besides playing The Gunk U.K.’s long-running standard “Christmas Fallout,” they also have a brand new holiday jingle in the form of trashing <oops…we mean covering> a traditional Christmas tune (& with Johnny Mohawk as well). Then, another gem of a holiday tune from the Letter Seventeen podcast gets a play. There is more cool music from the likes of Snow Control & The Descendents. But finally, Byron digs into his archive vault & finds yet another Xmas tune he forgot he ever wrote (& trust us…it is quite a shocker)!

BTW—-what’s up with all this “HOLIDAY” talk?… it’s “CHRISTMAS!” and Byron makes a point of this in reprising his old OWIT segment.

Well…we had a great year in Gunkcast-land! Have A very Gunkcast (oops—“Merry”) Christmas & A Happy New Year! See you all in 2012…cheers!

If you check out just “one” Gunkcast episode this year…this is the one! Of course we will say this about each new release of the podcast, but this one really packs a punch! It is the big release party of the much anticipated “split e.p.” between Curmudgeon & The Gunk U.K. ! Not only is the whole new e.p. (featuring both bands) played and made available for your FREE download here, but there are all sorts of extra goodies…as well as typical Gunkcast lunacy! So instead of going on yapping about it here, we suggest you just listen…cheers!

Byron tells a true ghost story of his own. Then his kids have something to add to this. And just when you think it’s over, a legendary “60’s” rock icon is brought back from the netherworld to tell his own tale! Byron summons an old cover tune from the Gunk U.K.’s garage-session recordings vault (which fits in quite nicely here). To conclude everything, Byron & his kids perform an 80’s new wave classic on an old keyboard they found amidst the cobwebs in their basement! Happy Halloween to all…cheers!

Byron witnessed a retro 80’s concert in Chicago...

“Nostalgia Act”

Byron witnessed a retro 80’s concert in Chicago which inspired this episode (& not to mention it was also recently the milestone 20th anniversary of a hugely influential 90’s LP)! So Byron was feeling quite nostalgic here & takes a trip of sorts down memory lane. He wonders how the youth of today will possibly look back at this present era in the future. Will the current age of technology, internet, & online social networking have a lasting impact on the kids of today? Will it really?? Also, Byron’s own children have a couple of things to add here with their impressions of current reality TV and generic pop culture icons (again do we hear a J.B. in this?)!

Also tune in for a couple of live studio jams…one tune being from one of Byron’s favorite ever (& somewhat unsung) 80’s bands & the other tune a not so unsung 90’s “anthem” (which ties in with that 20th anniversary thing again). For the latter Byron is joined in the studio by Karlmudgeon—singer of local Chicago band Curmudgeon. Oh and the next song from that upcoming split e.p. between The Gunk U.K. and Curmudgeon is debuted…enjoy!

No really…we promise this episode really delivers! To get things started, there is a world premiere song from Chicago’s own Curmudgeon (who are label mates with The Gunk U.K. on Trashcanrock Records). This is from the upcoming split e.p. between both bands. Us guys from The Gunk U.K. have to admit…the tune really rocks (especially since we also play on it)!

Next, Byron and Johnny dive back into the vinyl talk with probably the most off-the-wall discussion ever of the classic 80’s LP from Yaz—“Upstairs At Erics!” Byron does ease up a little on his 80’s freakout…but not before bringing up a few of his “picture discs” from that era. Then Johnny kicks in with more of his old school vinyls and a few true relics he brought which boast of other ancient media formats. Johnny makes a big case here for the “well-constructed” vinyl LP of old and even attempts to get into technical vinyl measurements & stuff like that. Then they pull out a classic Dio LP and totally freak when they test the truth behind a certain urban legend regarding it! Following are some more (fairly unconventional) musings on classic LPs from the likes of The Kinks, Prince, & “pre-Phil Collins” Genesis…and to pretty hilarious results! Byron & Johnny both admit to being huge fans of a music genius of the modern era by the name of Steven Wilson. The famous British “Hipgnosis” album artwork design group get a big mention. Following this is the point where Johnny launches into the most memorable “rant” of the entire trilogy…unleashing his feelings concerning the state of modern music and the generic pop stars who currently rule the charts.

And just when you think things are over, Johnny’s wife phones in to see where he’s at (a hint that Johnny’s dinner probably wasn’t waiting for him later that night)! Then…finally, there is a surprise guest appearance by a certain Gunkcast alumni to wrap things up in true style as is only fitting for this podcast!

Thanks to everyone for tuning in to the Gunkcast summer trilogy of 2011…we hope you all enjoyed listening as much as we did in cracking open 2 bottles of bourbon & ranting away on all of our favorite vinyl LPs! Cheers!!!

Cheers!!!
The talk of all things vinyl continues (as well as the flow of medicinal beverages). The view of old school vinyl LPs as “eye candy” is stressed…as opposed to what we have in the current day & age. Byron taps into his inner love of 80’s music and gets his New Wave freak on (& to Johnny Mohawk’s slight dismay)! Also, Byron tries to impress Johnny with LPs which do “not” boast “gatefold sleeves.” But this is not an easy task as Johnny belittles some of Byron’s re-issued & generic-cutout LPs. However, Byron does save face with many of his authentic original (and some out of print) vinyl rarities as well as bootlegs! 45’s get a mention…at which point Johnny manages to get himself “bleeped” (a first for any Gunkcast)! Then Byron pulls out the “Little Creatures” LP from Talking Heads & Johnny’s reaction may truly surprise all! But perhaps most shocking of anything in this episode is the unabashed attempt to expose a certain beloved cult classic 80’s tune as a big rip-off!!! Ohhh we love the song in question too…but the evidence presented may just raise some questions!

The “Vinyl Rant Trilogy” will conclude with Part# 3 coming very soon! Cheers!

What happens when Byron invites a surprise guest to the studio with both of their old vinyl LP collections (& of course medicinal beverages on hand)? The title of this episode should say it all! Ok…no surprise, Byron’s guest is Johnny Mohawk & this becomes an all out “rant” session! They set out to defend the merits of old school vinyl LPs vs. the modern era of mp3’s, digital downloading, & generic pop culture icons (do we hear the initials “J.B.” here?)! Along the way Byron becomes increasingly dubious of Johnny’s reputation as a hardcore punker as the discussion progresses & as the beverages flow. Byron decided to make this episode a trilogy due to the overall length…and also as a cheap way to get more Gunkcast episodes out of it in a short time! To start things off on the right foot these blokes do a live studio jam of a cover of Johnny’s all time favorite band (which may include some family ties). The episode also concludes with yet another outstanding cover tune by the band The Basement Lights (out of Knoxville, TN). Also tune in for a special exclusive preview of a certain much hyped upcoming Gunkcast episode as well! The 2nd installment of the “Vinyl Rant Trilogy” will be released very soon. Cheers!

Well I suppose the title of this episode says it all! Join Miles & Byron as they take both of their podcasts on a field trip (of sorts). They had a rollicking good time! Miles attempts to take on a Chicago “accent” and talks about brats & kielbasa alot. Meanwhile Byron’s cheap-ass recorder starts failing miserably in public—once again! So the quality of the audio at this event becomes a bit questionable (especially at “10:10” into this episode where we suggest you may want to turn that volume ever-so-slightly down)! But we make up for the audio shortcomings with a great music soundtrack provided by local Chicago band Curmudgeon (who are label mates with the Gunk U.K.)!
Byron brings the show back with one of the wackiest outings to date! 1st he attempts to spice up the standard Gunkcast intro…just a little (and with some extra help from a few friends). Then join Byron as he embarks on a Shamrock adventure on the streets of the Windy City. “2nd Take Tony” makes his big return to the show and joins Byron in the studio for what can only be described as the most juvenile fun we’ve had on the show yet! Also, Byron summons up a performance of one of his old forgotten tunes from the vault. And finally, what everyone has been waiting for…the answer to the question as to the whereabouts of the recently missing Smidge Kurdlebaum!
As a result of recent tragic events in the Gunk U.K. circle, Byron decided to pay special tribute to a fallen member of the team with this episode. But during the course of this short outing, what starts with one tragedy now inadvertently becomes two (in a manner of speaking). Also for the 1st time ever in any Gunkcast, Byron features music “not” by The Gunk U.K…Just a hint is that both music selections are by classic bands which also feature a “U.K.” in their names! Please excuse the very poor quality during the majority of this episode…the reason for it will become apparent upon listening. Cheers!

Byron gets his 1st new Gunkcast out...

“Dot Com Morons”

Byron gets his 1st new Gunkcast out for 2011! In this episode Byron decides to complain about technology and makes arguments for the “old school.” Topics tackled include holiday greeting card kiosk machine headaches, cell phone stupidity, and internet/texting slang as the official language of the 00’s. Also, a wistful look back to the corner record shop of old…which sends Byron off on a tangent about the merits of vinyl LP’s versus mp3’s. In light of the subject matter at hand, Byron decided to strip back this episode to the basics and even does a couple brand new acoustic performances of Gunk U.K. classics! Cheers!

Months in the making…Gunkcast #2 now arrives just in time for your Christmas holiday 2010! In this episode Byron takes his show to the streets of Chicago, takes us behind the scenes of The Gunk U.K.’s current recording studio sessions, and unveils the true meaning of OWIT and how it relates to the corporate conglomerate bastard machine of America. This episode is jam-packed with with music (including The gunk U.K.’s annual holiday jingle) and even includes a big send off from a celebrated member of the podcast community! Oh…and there’s also the debut of “2nd-Take-Tony”…what more can you ask for in a podcast??
