We agree that the Medal of Honor series isn’t what it once was, especially with competition from Activison’s Call of Duty and EA’s own recent hit Bad Company 2.

We’re really looking forward to Mafia 2 for its blend of open-world gangster gameplay and drama.

Denby Grace, producer of Mafia 2, has said that the game will last around 15 hours.

“The experience is 15 hours, so it’s not too bad. But the scope is pretty huge, the script’s like 600 pages; 160,000 words; 300 speaking characters.”

Mafia 2 is set to release in the 4th quarter of 2010 on Xbox 360 and PS3.

This is a review by fellow Gamersworldbd reader Sng425 and has been edited by me.

Remember Desmond Miles & his Ancestor Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad From Assassin’s Creed? Well, the Assassin’s Creed series is back with a brand new sequel named and this time It introduces us to a new assassin “Ezio Auditore da Firenze” from the late 15th century in Italian Renaissance era.

Assassin’s Creed 2 takes place in an open world with nonlinear gameplay, allowing the player to roam freely within several regions throughout the late fifteenth-century Italy such as Venice, Florence, Forli, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Rome & Apenine Mountains.

Ezio is a son of a 15th-century Italian banker. The player will find Ezio as a 15th century Italian noble student, where he has not yet donned his assassin’s robe and instead is living a carefree life; challenging his brother to a rooftop race, beating up his sister’s cheating lover, visiting his girlfriend’s house at night, fighting with the local gangs, stealing & pickpocketing money from the citizens of Florence, etc. However, Ezio’s devil-may-care freedom is soon cut short.

There are a lot of key features that has been added in this new sequel of Assassin’s Creed series. As you may have known, money plays a big part in Asassin’s Creed 2 and it can be earned in a various way, by completing missions, doing business in the villa, stealing and pickpocketing from civilians, looting from guards, finding hidden treasures etc.

The player can spend money to buy new weapons, ammunition and upgrade Ezio’s armor from the blacksmith’s store. [You] can visit the doctor to get cured or to buy medicine which will help him in his journey. [There is also the tailor where you can] get a new assassin uniform and upgrade [Ezio's] knife ,poison and medicine pouch.

[There is a] fast traveling station to travel through cities quickly in exchange for money. Gamers can also visit the art merchant to buy the treasure maps of every regions to find hidden treasures and to buy paintings for the villa, which increases the value of Monteriggioni.

By increasing the value of Monteriggioni, Ezio will get a cut of the action for the money he invested. Everytime Ezio expands his business at the workshop in the villa, he will get a 10% bonus of the total value everyday. Ezio can expand his business by re-innovating the city, collecting weapons and armor for the armory in the villa, by upgrading the stores there, collecting paintings, feathers and most importantly the Codex Pages.

In the previous game the character was only able to climb, run, and ride horse. But now the player is given a new freedom to swim and even fly with a flying machine. The tall towers will give the player a Bird’s eye view to synchronize the area like the first game. Climbing is much improved from Assassin’s Creed 1. Indeed, Ezio can now jump when climbing to grab an edge, which makes climbing a lot more easier.

Now talking about the combat system and the new weapons. In the previous game, [Altair] was only able to carry four weapons in his inventory. But now Ezio is able to carry almost eight weapons in his inventory; The Sword, Dagger, Dual Hidden Blades, Smoke Bombs,Poison Vials, The Pistol, Throwing Knives and of course Ezio can use his fists. Combat is almost similar to the first one, except some slight changes. Ezio [can now] perform a double assassination, [killing two enemies at once]. Double assassination is fun to perform and it never gets old.

Combat is [more] fun in Assassin’s Creed 2 since the player can kill an enemy with his own weapons or even using the enemy’s weapons, as you may have watched in a trailer.

This review is based on the console version of the game. There is not much more to talk about the graphics, sound and gameplay. Everything is just great in the console version.

The game is divided into 14 sequences. The two DLCs [Battle for Forli and The Bonfires of the Vanities] are required to play Sequence 12 & 13 on the console version. The PC version will come included with the DLCs.

The PC version will release on March 16, 2010.

That’s it, people. Assassin’s Creed 2 features a lot of things that can’t be said in the review. It will take thousands of words to describe all the features of it. So I just figured out the pros and cons of the game and gave it a 9/10 overall.

Pros:

(+)Huge, beautifully realized world to explore
(+)A great variety of missions, weapons, and stealth techniques than in the original
(+)The main protagonist Ezio is a terrific new character
(+)Great storyline with outstanding visual design,sound effects & gameplay
(+)Combat is fun & the double assassination never gets old
(+)A great sequel that will make players eager for the third installment

Cons:

(-)Console gamers will have to buy the DLCs to play some sequences in the game.
(-)A few gameplay and visual quirks

Overall: 9/10

THQ has said that the PC version Metro 2033 will support Nvidia’s 3D glasses as well as DirectX 11.

Tony Tamasi, Senior Vice President of Content and Technology of Nvidia said in a press release:

“Our engineers have been working closely with 4A Games to ensure that Metro 2033 takes full advantage of some of the spectacular effects made possible with the next generation of DX11 hardware.

The 4A Engine is one of the most advanced game engines we’ve ever worked with, and with DX11 enabled, Metro 2033 is undoubtedly one of the best looking PC games of 2010. Combine this with NVIDIA 3D Vision and PhysX and you will experience mind-blowing visuals.”

Dead Space 2 is in a limbo and it isn’t clear whether EA’s sequel to the critically acclaimed horror-shooter will debut on PC.

Speaking with Bluesnews, an EA rep confirmed, “As of right now a PC SKU is not in the plan.”

However, speaking later to VG247, EA told that Dead Space 2 on PC is “under consideration.”

“Visceral Studios is dedicated to delivering an outstanding Dead Space sequel for the Xbox 360 and PS3″

“A PC SKU is under consideration. Nothing additional at this time.”

There’s still hope PC gamers.

Dead Space 2 will debut in fiscal year 2011. That means late 2010 or early 2011.

It is a sad day for us PC gamers indeed. Microsoft has confirmed that Alan Wake on the PC has been canceled, saying that some games are more suited than others.

Speaking to Strategy Informer, Microsoft said:

“Some games are more suited for the intimacy of the PC, and others are best played from the couch in front of a larger TV screen. We ultimately realised that the most compelling way to experience “Alan Wake” was on the Xbox 360 platform, so we focused on making it an Xbox 360 exclusive. Both Microsoft and Remedy have long histories in PC game development. This decision was about matching this specific game to the right platform.”

Earlier we reported that Alan Wake will release on the Xbox 360 on May 18 2010 (US) and May 21 2010 (EU).

Official PlayStation Magazine UK has reviewed God of War 3 in their March 2010 issue for a score of 9/10.

Here’s what OPM UK had to say about God of War 3:

“The game is inches away from scoring 10/10, and it’s only the familiarity of the core gameplay that makes it feel less than the very, very best.

But it’s definitely the biggest, and if this is the finale (and the corpses littering the stage by the end of the game suggest it might be), then God of War III gives PlayStation’s toughest hero the send-off he deserves.”

Ubisoft has just dropped word that a new Ghost Recon game will be released, dubbed “Future Soldier”.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will release Fall 2010 and Ubisoft says the game will have “cutting-edge technology, prototype high-tech weaponry, and state-of-the-art single-player and multiplayer modes”.

The multiplayer beta will hit Summer 2010.

Good news for Mass Effect 2 fans, BioWare has plans to release a new armor and a shotgun tomorrow (9 February 2010). The DLC will be available for download via the in-game Cerberus network.

Details of the DLC are:

Cerberus Assault Armor

Cerberus assault armor is designed for shock troops, turn the tide of battle against creatures or forces that would decimate normal soldiers.
Increases heavy weapon ammo capacity by +10%
Increases shields by +10%
Increases health by +10%

M-22a Eviscerator Shotgun

The M-22a Eviscerator Shotgun is a longer-range shotgun with armor-piercing loads. This design also violates several intergalactic weapons treaties, so the M-22a is not distributed to militaries.

The DLC pack seems to be tailor made for a vanguard class. I like to get up close and personal with heavy charge, and these two will completely dominate the enemy.

In Dante’s Inferno you travel to the nine circles of hell trying to redeem yourself and recover your lost love Beatrice.

The early stages of the demo is set in Florence, Italy and is really polished. From the first moment I picked up the controller, it was evident as to how much time Visceral Games had put into it.

Combat is really fast paced and good fun, although it was a tad easy and often delved into mindless button mashing There are only two stages of difficulty available in the demo, with more harder difficulty settings promised in the full game. What sets this game apart from the likes of God of War is its setting – you either get to punish enemies or absolve them of their sins.

There are two paths of progression available, holy (you earn holy experience by absolving enemies) and unholy (by punishing enemies). It is possible to mix match these two but most gamers will find that one clear path will provide the best rewards.

What blew up the demo was a battle with Grim Reaper of Death itself, and watching Dante defeat him and take the Scythe. That was a treat as death himself begged for mercy. Boss battles follow the way of God of War with button mashing at the precise moment to finish off the enemy.

This is definitely intended for a mature audience, there is no shortage of blood, torture and naked women. The graphics is top-notch and there was no framerate hiccups on the Xbox 360 version (which I played) even with a dozen of enemies on screen at once.

From the demo it seems Dante’s Inferno has a variety of settings – you have to fight through nine circles of hell to be exact. However, it is a bit too similar to God of War. Let’s hope the finished game can break out of the hype.

Bangladeshi gamers are worried about Assassin’s Creed 2 PC DRM.

Here’s it in a nutshell: Gamers will have to be connected to Ubisoft’s Online Services Platform to play even the single player campaign.

If you lose connection, the game will pause and resume when you’ve got your connection back.

You need to sign up for an account at Ubi.com to play Assassin’s Creed 2 on the PC.

GameSpot reports, “gamers will be required to be connected to the Internet during their entire play session. The enabled-Internet requirement is necessary across all game modes, including single-player and multiplayer options. If players lose their connection during a session, the game will pause and resume once the Internet is restored. Players will also be required to sign up for an account on Ubi.com.”

This has us Bangladeshi gamers really worried. Legitimate paid customers will also be annoyed since a constant internet connection is required.

The controversial article, PC Phobia – Is The PC Dead As A Gaming Platform? has garnered intense debate from Gamersworldbd readers.

A follow up is in order. But instead, let’s take a look from Bangladeshi perspective. If you are a Bangladeshi gamer, which would be better, PCs or consoles?

The Good Ol’ Days

Whether we like to admit or not, most of us started as a PC gamer. Remember the old days of NFS and Prince of Persia on AMD K6/Pentium I PCs in Bangladesh?

Back then gaming was simple on Windows 95 or the DOS-era if you were lucky enough to own a PC at that time. There was no need to worry about system requirements. Most games we played were limited to the ones that came pre-installed. Or we would have some elder relative (who happened to be a PC nut) and install the next NFS in our PC.

Bangladesh was gripped with Doom, NFS, Prince of Persia and Road Rash fever that took long to break out of.

Consoles were gaining in popularity, mostly the Sega Mega Drive and Sonic. Consoles were simple and lasted longer (I’m looking at you RRoD) than their controllers. I fondly remember going to Eastern Plaza every few months to replace a busted controller. Games came in cartridges, we couldn’t imagine playing directly from a spinning disc.

New Kid On The Block

And along came this box called the PlayStation that would play games on the TV. It was a toy for the rich only, and most of us mocked the “retarded” gamepads that they used. However the first Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid proved us wrong.

Mind you, PC gaming was at it’s pinnacle (and it still is now) in the PlayStation era. Consoles began gaining in popularity with the advent of the PS2. The original Xbox was less well received in Bangladesh.

The Rise Of The Consoles

Fast forward today and most households (in Dhaka) own a gaming console. Why?

For the half that you spend on your PC, you will most likely find a top-of-the-line next generation console. Then there isn’t the hassle of ensuring that your system meets the requirements to play the game, just pop the disk inside your console and start playing – even no installation required! Unlike PCs, you don’t have to constantly upgrade your consoles meaning that your “investment” won’t get obsolete by the next year or just six months from now.

The PC Strikes Back

But all is not lost for PC gamers. Sure, consoles have overtaken PCs in popularity in the US/EU but here in Bangladesh, PC reigns supreme.

As a reader Moontasir points out, a PC equipped with two ATI HD 5870 in CrossFire will beat the graphical quality of consoles. This is true, consoles are limited to a resolution of 1920X1080 whereas PC gamers can enjoy 2560X1600 (the ATI EyeFinity supports a maximum resolution of 7680X1600 across multiple monitors).

But why stop there? A core i7 rig, with two HD 5970 in CrossFire (for a total of 4 GPUs) and 12 GB of RAM will blow the consoles out of the water.

For comparison, a PS3 uses a 3.2 GHz Cell processor with a NVIDIA GPU pushing at 550 MHz.

The Xbox 360 also uses a 3.2 GHz PowerPC triple core processor. RAM is at a paltry 512 MB and the ATI GPU is clocked at a laughably 500 MHz.

So The Hardware Is There But……

But specs alone won’t save the PC (if you are crazy enough to spend that much anyway) since most developers won’t take advantage of the hardware. The reason we are seeing games like Halo Reach, Uncharted 2, etc. is because developers take full advantage of the console architecture. They are designed for gaming, and even with inferior hardware, gaming on consoles is smooth and ultra-realistic thanks to hundreds of man-hours developer spend on optimizing their code. Most PC games are lazy ports of their console counterparts and hence the lower framerates.

A Gamersworldbd visitor explains the difference between architectures:

“As always, computing hardware is always superior to console hardware – by raw numbers. But what makes the average high-end gaming rig inferior to a PS3 or Xbox 360 are the multiple GPU cores. Console hardware is manufactured for one sole task – render animated polygons or vectors. PC hardware is, on the other hand, manufactured to do a multitude of things.”

Nobody Owns The PC Gaming Platform

The other reason is that nobody owns the PC gaming platform (even though Windows has the majority market share). The reason why consoles get such superb exclusives is because Microsoft and Sony took the initiative to make such games in the first place. It is in their best interest to make a triple A title which sells a lot of hardware and generates even more profit. In comparison, the latest PC exclusive is unlikely to sell more copies of Windows. Sure, hardware sales might increase but Microsoft has nothing to gain (and hence the lack of interest on PC gaming on part of the Redmont juggernaut).

As another Gamersworldbd reader Enamur Reza so succinctly puts it: “Of course PC delivers out the best in graphics but it cant give me the Uncharted II or Bayonetta, or, Ninja Gaiden II or Assasin’s Creed II ( at the right time), or Gears of War II, or most importantly God of War III.” Well said sir.

However, for FPS and RPG games PC is the place to go. I kid you, try to beat Left 4 Dead 2 at hardcore (on realism mode) with your Xbox 360 gamepad and try it again on a mouse and keyboard.

And you don’t see consoles with World of Warcraft and 11.5 million players.

So Which Is The Best In Bangladesh?

PC games are the cheapest in Bangladesh, followed by Xbox 360 games and lastly, PS3’s original games. Although that is soon about to change with the PS3 hack.

Dhaka is hitting the console fever but everywhere else in Bangladesh, it’s still PC. That said, if you are a hardcore gamer, you surely own a gaming PC plus a console (or two).

If a game releases on multiple platforms, I always get the PC version since it’s cheaper. I also own a Xbox 360 and PS3 for the exclusives that simply aren’t available on the PC.

I was born a PC gamer and will be a PC gamer for life.

First it was Mass Effect 2, and now BioShock 2 has bee released on torrent sites, available for download.

It is the Xbox 360 PAL version and the download size is around 6.5 GB.

BioShock 2 is set to release on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on February 9 2010, so it’s been leaked 5 days before the official release date.
