Nestled in the cerulean waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Capri, Italy, has long enchanted artists, writers, and dreamers with its natural beauty and timeless charm. From the ancient Roman villas perched on cliffs to the azure grottoes that glow with otherworldly light, Capri is a place that seems tailor-made for creative inspiration. If you’re an artist seeking a retreat where you can reconnect with your muse, look no further than this idyllic island for your next artistic journey.

Why Capri? The Island of Inspiration

Capri’s storied history as a haven for artists dates back centuries. Famous creatives such as Pablo Neruda, Jean Cocteau, and even Jacqueline Kennedy found sanctuary on this island. With its unique combination of dramatic cliffs, sun-drenched coastlines, and lush Mediterranean flora, the island offers a stunning backdrop for artistic exploration. Every turn on Capri invites a moment of stillness, an opportunity to capture the interplay of light, water, and landscape in your work.

What to Expect at an Artist Retreat in Capri

1.Inspiring Landscapes: Imagine painting with the backdrop of Faraglioni’s rock formations or sketching the quiet, hidden gardens of Villa Jovis. Capri’s diverse landscapes offer countless opportunities to get lost in nature and draw fresh inspiration.

2.Workshops and Masterclasses: Many artist retreats on the island include professional workshops where you can refine your skills in drawing, painting, photography, or sculpture. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a beginner, these sessions are tailored to meet you where you are in your creative journey.

3.Community of Creatives: One of the most enriching aspects of an artist retreat is the opportunity to connect with fellow creatives from around the world. Share ideas, collaborate on projects, or simply find a supportive community that understands the ebbs and flows of the artistic process.

4.Cultural Immersion: An artist retreat on Capri wouldn’t be complete without immersing yourself in the island’s rich cultural history. Explore the ruins of ancient Roman villas, visit local art galleries, or attend performances in intimate venues that celebrate the island’s artistic heritage.

5.Time for Reflection and Creation: Unlike the hustle and bustle of daily life, an artist retreat allows time to pause, reflect, and work at your own pace. Whether you prefer to start your mornings with plein-air painting by the sea or spend afternoons journaling in a quiet garden, the retreat gives you space to reconnect with your creative process.

What to Do Outside of Your Creative Practice

Capri is more than just a place to create; it’s a place to explore. When you’re not working on your art, there are countless ways to enjoy the island. Take a boat ride to the famous Blue Grotto, hike up Monte Solaro for panoramic views of the island, or sip an espresso in one of the many cafes overlooking the Piazza Umberto.

If relaxation is your goal, the island’s beaches, such as Marina Piccola, offer the perfect place to unwind after a productive day. For those interested in wellness, many retreats also offer yoga and meditation sessions that complement your creative practice, helping you stay balanced and centered throughout your stay.

Practical Information for Your Artist Retreat

•When to Visit: Capri is best visited in the spring and early fall when the weather is mild, and the tourist crowds are smaller. These times of year also provide the clearest light for painters and photographers.

•Where to Stay: Many artist retreats on Capri partner with local accommodations ranging from rustic, charming B&Bs to luxurious villas. Depending on the retreat, you might be staying in a secluded hilltop setting or right by the water.

•What to Bring: Be sure to pack your art supplies—whether paints, sketchbooks, or cameras—along with comfortable clothing, walking shoes, and a sun hat for outdoor sessions. Capri’s weather can be unpredictable, so layering is always a good idea.

Unleash Your Creativity on Capri

Whether you’re looking to reconnect with your artistic passion, meet like-minded creatives, or simply enjoy a break in one of the most picturesque places in the world, an artist retreat on Capri offers the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in beauty and inspiration. Let the island’s magical charm reignite your creativity and transform your artistic journey.

Pack your brushes, pens, or camera—Capri is waiting.

Adventures in South America

There are so many beautiful places to explore in the world. This past Easter, I was fortunate enough to find myself with three friends hiking through the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, Peru.

South America is filled with vast expanses of unexplored rainforest, as well as breathtaking vistas and hubs of ancient civilizations, such as the Incas. These locations have become hot-spots for travelers who–like me–are looking for a bit more adventure. And what’s more adventurous than making the trek up into the Andes?

After spending a few days in Lima, Peru, we made our way out for a getaway with Fashion For Conservation–more to come on that in a future blog–when we decided to first explore all that Machu Picchu had to offer.

Checking in for our train to the base.

Hiking through ancient ruins

It was a rainy Good Friday when we decided to visit Machu Picchu. Now, when most people visit Machu Picchu, they tend to take the bus up. That way they can be sure to look photoready in their colorful Peruvian ponchos once they reach the top. But not us.

We set off in our rain gear, deciding that we wanted to experience the full beauty of our location by taking the grueling hour and forty-five minute trek up the mountain, climbing over the huge steps, higher and higher.

Me and my crew at the summit.

Reflecting through adventure

Pretty quickly into our hike, I resolved to make the journey on my own. Taking time to reflect and appreciate the surroundings of this iconic, spiritual place.

There was so much to take in as I made my way up the mountain. Being surrounded by the flora and fauna, I began to realize how fortunate I was in being physically capable to do this. Our health is one of the most important aspects of life. And this experience gave me a chance to become aware of just how grateful I was to be healthy and that I had the ability to make that hike on my own, rather than having to take the bus up the way so many others do.

This trip allowed me to feel so much while experiencing the iconic beauty of the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu.

A Tragic Loss

It’s no secret that human activities have had a significant impact on the planet and on biodiversity. This year we took a step closer to the extinction of the Northern White Rhino, a subspecies of the White Rhino. Before his death at age of 45, Sudan was the last-known male Northern White Rhino. He spent the last nine years of his life in Kenya where attempts to use science and other research where made to try to bring back the magnificent species. Without Sudan, there are only two female Northern White Rhinos left on Earth.

The last northern white rhino, Sudan, grazes at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a 90,000-acre conservancy in central Kenya which has made great strides in protecting and increasing rhino populations in Kenya. ©Stuart Price for Make It Kenya Photo.

Confronting the Causes

The astonishing decline in global wildlife populations is happening quickly. There are only 40,000 rhinos alive today–that’s 60 percent fewer than just 40 years ago. This dramatic decline serves as a wakeup call on the importance of acting fast, but also acting smart to protect biodiversity for future generations. One of the first steps towards a solution is recognizing the behavior that drives the cycle forward. Such causes include poaching and the illegal trade of Rhino horns and other animal byproducts such as hides. Additionally, an explosion in the human population has led to encroachment on protected areas and interference on natural grazing lands.

A rhino handler stands with‘Sudan’, the world’s last remaining male northern white rhino is seen at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Sudan died this year, ending the hopes for successful reproduction. ©Stuart Price for Make It Kenya Photo.

Crafting a Solution

Though it can certainly seem daunting and hopeless at times, we shouldn’t give up hope yet. One of the solutions towards ensuring the survival of our wildlife lies in the hands of the communities that coexist with wildlife. Communities that share resources with wildlife should also share benefits that come from wildlife. Another solution entirely lies in scientific research and learning. We ought to be clear about the absolute consequences of the impact caused by human activities by rallying more funds towards the protection and conservation of unique wildlife species and their habitats. The death of Sudan and eleven other rhinos which also succumbed in a botched translocation process is a cruel symbol of how much disregard humans have for nature.

Sudan seen in 2015 with a couple of his handlers at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. ©Stuart Price for Make It Kenya Photo.

Looking Towards the Future

We should exploit the unique advantage technology affords us <g class="gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="6" data-gr-id="6">in</g> the aim of developing solutions for the next generations. <g class="gr_ gr_14 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del" id="14" data-gr-id="14">Afterall</g>, we are among the lucky few people who have had the chance to be apart of a truly historic transformation. Our planet at a crossroads because of us and we have the opportunity to decide the path ahead. I passionately believe that this is where we stand today in terms of biodiversity conservation.

Not Your Mom’s Leather Jacket

The places I travel to inspire me to feel more alive. Whether it’s the beauty of the landscape or the vibrancy of the people, I like to carry bits of it with me as I move through life. This supple lambs leather jacket is finished with a vibrant, vintage Moroccan textile detail so you can carry some of the spice and flare with you through the winter. It’s not just another leather jacket. You’ll look as chic and powerful as you feel in this statement piece.

At the end of the day, what’s the point of self-expression through fashion if we aren’t having fun with it?

Lending a Lens for Endangered Species

Africa is the beginning and the end for me. It encompasses everything I love most about travel – diversity, wildlife and a tapestry of fascinating cultures. There’s one place in Africa, however, that has become very near and dear to me, and that is Kenya.

Grevy’s Zebras are currently listed as an endangered species. I © Photo courtesy of Gypset Productons

I took my first trip to Kenya last January with my friend Ethan the founder of Mint Media to participate in the Great Grevy’s Rally with the conservation organization Wildlife Direct. The Great Grevy’s Rally is “a unique opportunity for citizen scientists to contribute to the preservation of an endangered species [and to] be a part of the national census of Grevy’s zebra that is using photography and citizen scientists.”

For three days we traveled around the savannah and tracked these extraordinary zebra’s, as well as the beautiful reticulated giraffe, snapping photos of their spots and stripes from their right side, so the real scientists could differentiate between each animal to count them. How cool is that! I have to say, it was so satisfying knowing that with each photo I took was lending a hand in helping to save these endangered species.

Adventures in Amboseli

Game drives are one of the incredible experiences available as guests at Tawi Lodge. Seeing these animals in the wild is truly a singular experience. | © Photo courtesy of Tawi Lodge

After this, we were on to our next great adventure…a safari in Amboseli National Park, with my friend Teeku Patel who is a wildlife photographer, conservationist and certified professional safari guide. If you want to get up close and personal (at a safe distance) with the wildlife of Kenya, Teeku is your man. Teeku spent many of his early years on safari, exploring and camping in the game parks of Kenya and reserves of East Africa. He did so under the expert tutelage of his father, an Honorary Game Warden. This is where he learned a great deal about wildlife and the different cultures and customs of East Africa.

A Home Away From Home in Kenya

I could hardly write about my travels to Kenya without mentioning one of the absolute best places to stay. Tawi Lodge is where we called our home away from home for a few nights while on Safari. I’ll never forget waking up in my cottage, walking out on my deck to find the clouds had lifted. With the air clear and the views vast, I could see Mt. Kilimanjaro in all its magnitude reigning over the landscape. Even from a distance, it’s impossible not to appreciate Africa’s tallest mountain and how small it can make you feel.

There’s not a bad view in sight. Each cottage is built on sweeping bushland in full view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. | © Photo courtesy of Sokomoto Images

Aside from the glorious views though, the experience at Tawi was unforgettable on its own. From the exceptional accommodations, to the creative, delicious menu and the wildlife enjoying the waterhole safely adjacent to the swimming pool, so many wonderful memories were made. All of this matched with the incredible service, you couldn’t ask for anything more.

Every cottage is decorated exquisitely. The art and finishes put the vibrant regional culture on display. | © Photo courtesy of Tawi Lodge

An Unforgettable Cross-Cultural Experience

Due to the incredible proximity to Amboseli National Park, the wonderful staff at the lodge arranged for us to go exploring with a Maasai warrior. The Maasai people have been semi-nomadic on this land for centuries and their knowledge of it is unmatched. Their experiences living in sync with the land and animals serve as a shining example of climate adaptation. There’s a lot we can learn as climate change progresses.

Myself on a bush tour with a Maasai warrior. I © Photo courtesy of Sokomoto Images.

He led us on one of the most unforgettable days. There’s really nothing in the world like encountering the majesty of zebra, giraffes or elephants in their natural habitat. Just when it could hardly get any better, we met up with Teeku again. That night, he arranged a bonfire and we ended the day beside the fire, sun melting below the horizon. I am absolutely sure I will return to Tawi Lodge again and again.

Get ready to add a playful and sexy summer staple to your wardrobe. We’re excited to introduce to you all the GYPSETGIRL Flirt Skirt beach cover! It’s very important to me as a designer to make clothes that are as chic and adventurous as the women who wear them. You should always feel completely poised, beautiful and comfortable in your clothing. I know it’s hard to feel that way when it’s as dreadfully hot and humid as it is here on the East Coast. You might even be wondering if it’s possible to stay cool and look hot at the same time? Absolutely, but you have to dress for success. While shorts and crop tops are certainly tried and true summer beach wear, these hot beach days have me reaching for a breezy and fresh alternative, the GYPSETGIRL Flirt Skirt beach cover is perfect to hide those itsy bitsy teeny bikini’s.

Channel your inner lady madonna this spring with the beautiful tiered maxi dress. You’ll look fresh and breezy as a summer day draped in this ultra-soft silk number. It’s the perfect clean slate for your wardrobe this season.

Fringe Baby, Fringe

Let the runways in London and Paris provide all the proof you need that fringe is in this season. This luscious Atlas lambs leather jacket is perfect for a cool summer night. It’s both fitted and free-flowing featuring a tasteful textural embellishment along the shoulders. But there’s more than meets the eye with this jacket. I designed a special lining in collaboration with artist Chris Tuorto. It features four feathers each with the word “Tolerance” written inside in English, Turkish, Arabic and Russian. It’s an important reminder to carry close to the heart these days. Feel good knowing a portion of the proceeds goes towards the Syrian Refugee Fund.

Jungle Kitten

You’ll practically dance into every room in the high-low flamenco inspired Flirt Skirt. Feel fierce in this unique gray leopard pattern yet oh so comfortable in the elastic waist that’s great for any day to night look. The flirty pom-pom fringe really ties the whole look together making it fierce, chic, and fun all at once. Made of a soft and light, polyester this skirt is a must-have!

Loving what you’re seeing? There’s much more of the GYPSETGIRL Spring/Summer Collection to be discovered. Check out the GYPSETGIRL BAZAAR to see the rest of the Spring/Summer 2018 collection.

Philippa/Flickr

There’s no better place on the planet to ring in the summer solstice than the land of the midnight sun. Ninety-six continuous hours of sunshine and top-notch headliners will keep you dancing through the Secret Solstice festival. Artists Stormzy, Steve Aoki, and Charlotte de Witte are just a couple good reasons to attend. Be sure to make a stop at one of Iceland’s many geothermal hot springs before you head home and soak off the post-festival blues.

Montreux Jazz Festival, June 29th-July 14th ~ Montreux, Switzerland

Don’t be fooled by the name. This festival has evolved from its roots to include a variety of acts among its signature jazzy lineup. No matter your musical tastes, the acts at Montreux Jazz will please both the jazz purist and indie enthusiast with acts like Leon Bridges and New Orleans Jazz Train. Also keep an eye out for the unique sound and awe-inspiring performance of Moses Sumney. There’s few places with the same undeniable beauty and tranquility found on the shores of a Swiss a lake. See for yourself.

The lineup this year is stacked with new moguls and classics with names like Kendrick Lamar, Bob Dylan and N.E.R.D. Also playing are Odesza, Mac Demarco, Post Malone and many more. If the artists weren’t good enough, you can frolic between stages by taking a chairlift through the greenery and breathing crisp mountain air.

With all of this fantastic music to choose from this festival season 2018, where will you find yourselves shaking your booty this summer? We know where we’ll be!

Say Hello to the Little Gray Elephant Dress

Sustainable fashion is on the rise, and with Spring officially here, it’s time to pack away the sweaters and jackets and add some warm weather, “kind” clothes to your wardrobe! Don’t forget to save some room for GYPSETGIRL, though. I am ecstatic to announce the iconic elephant dress from the GYPSETGIRL Spring/Summer 2018 collection is now available for online purchase.

A portion of the proceeds for this fabulous dress go towards Wildlife Direct. This organization works to end the illegal ivory trade contributing to the worldwide endangerment of elephants.

Sustainable Designs Inspired by Nature

This super soft, gray silk dress has been featured in British Vogue and seen on the runway in Fashion For Conservation’s show at London Fashion Week last September. It is chic, elegant, and perfect for any occasion. The aesthetic and innocence of baby elephants is palpable in the design of this lovely dress. Made from luscious hammered silk evoking the texture of an elephant’s skin, the dress flatters your natural curves. Meanwhile, the cinched, crinkled silk sleeves are reminiscent of iconic elephant ears. The peekaboo back is both sexy and modest.

A baby elephant strikes a pose while walking the road. James Sanders/Flickr.

Fashion You Can Feel Good About

It’s important to feel beautiful and confident in your clothes, but it’s even better knowing you’re supporting sustainable fashion. Designed to raise awareness to the plight of elephants, you’ll look and feel great in it. It’s time to take action against ivory poaching, or these majestic, intelligent creatures face the tragic possibility of extinction during our lifetimes. That’s why a portion of the sales made on this dress will be donated to Wildlife Direct. This organization works tirelessly to protect elephants. They played an active role in stopping elephant slaughter in Kenya during the 1980s. Their work and mission continues to this day.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get shopping!

One of my life long dreams came to fruition on the runway at none other than London Fashion Week last October. I realize it’s hard to go wrong with the all of the beautiful couture, gorgeous people, and autumn charm swirling about one of the most iconic cities in the world, but having the opportunity to see one of your own designs on the catwalk is an experience unlike any other. I feel so privileged to be a part of such an important campaign.

The GYPSETGIRL Elephant Dress in London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2018.

GYPSETGIRL’s Elephant Dress appeared in Fashion for Conservation’s Elephantasia show alongside 23 other uber talented international designers. Seen in British Vogue, each and every piece was inspired by the majestic, gentle and tragically endangered elephant. The show sought to raise both awareness and funds to put a stop to poaching and to ensure that future generations are able to experience these truly unique creatures.

I drew my inspiration for the GYPSETGIRL Elephant Dress from a baby elephant. The hammered gray silk of the body represents the textured skin while the crinkled silk of the sleeves represents the ears. This chic and flattering piece can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion and the gorgeous color is flattering on all skin tones.

I was absolutely blown away by the creativity demonstrated by all the designers in Elephantasia. No two pieces looked the same and yet each one found a way to breathe new life into the concept. How perfect when you consider that no two living creatures are exactly the same.

I am thrilled to announce the the GYPSETGIRL Elephant Dress, as well as my entire Spring/Summer 2018 line, is available for purchase online now on the GYPSETGIRL BAZAAR! Our mission is far from over and a portion of the proceeds are contributed to WildlifeDirect.

We came across the Tribe Hotel while looking for a cool & chic place to stay on our recent trip to Nairobi. The name alone intrigued us to learn more, but it was the incredible experience of staying here that made us come back twice during this latest adventure, along with discovering the ethos behind Tribes view of the world and how they embrace diversity and equality in humanity sealed the deal for us.

“Tribe was conceived from a simple belief: that we coexist on a single planet and there is only one Tribe that matters… humankind. The interdependence of today’s societies and the speed at which networks are being built, make it increasingly apparent that unity is the foundation of a dignified, sophisticated and prosperous world community. It is this spirit that governed every stage of Tribe’s development and is central to its operational mission statement.” ~ Tribe Hotel

The Tribe Hotel seamlessly blends chic, modern design with African tribal artifacts for an incredible cultural experience.
I can’t say enough about the wonderful Tribe Hotel team. From general manager Stephan Meeves, to the restaurant staff and concierge, everyone was helpful, friendly, and so accommodating. One receptionist at the spa even offered to pick-up an amazing hair piece I had been admiring on her despite it only being available at an outside location. Talk about going above and beyond your job description. The service is unparalleled!

To call Dr. Paula Kahumbu a strong woman, would be a masterpiece of understatement. From the time she was a teenager living in Kenya, she made the choice to live her life on her own terms. Under no circumstance was she going to become a secretary, and be confined to the traditional expectations of a typical Kenyan woman of that time. No, she had other plans for herself. Bitten by her love of the environment and conservation at a young age while surrounded by wildlife living in a rural area of Kenya, she knew her path was going to be wider and she trail blazed it with vision and determination like notables Diane Fosse and Jane Goodall.

With her boots on the ground effort, Dr. Kahumbu made her way to a Kenyan park lead by conservationist and paleoanthropologist, Dr. Richard Leakey (son of famed paleoanthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey), whom became her mentor, helping to sculpt and affect the change she would make in continuing his legacy.

Now with a PhD from Princeton University where she studied Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, she is the CEO of Kenyan Conservation NGO (originally co-founded by Richard Leakey) and is now championing the hard-hitting Hands Off Our Elephants Campaign with First Lady Margaret Kenyatta. Hands Off Our Elephants is a campaign to help build elephant awareness and conservation via behavior change on every level of society, from rural communities, to business leaders and politicians.

Now, being an environmental myself, feeling heartbroken over the poaching crisis of the African elephants and having a lifelong admiration for Fossey and Goodall, when Fashion for Conservation asked me to interview Paula Kahumbu for their Elephantasia campaign, I jumped at the chance!

I arrived at the office in New York and was immediately escorted to a conference room lined with a collection of Amarula Liqueur bottles, and was introduced to Dr. Kahumbu. She shook my hand with a warm, welcoming smile on her face as we sat down to discuss the Maasai people’s beadwork she had brought for me for a Fashion for Conservation shoot, the plight of the elephants and how others are working to raise awareness for these endangered giants.

Dr. Kahumbu: So these are traditional African pieces made by women of the Maasai Tribe who are master beaders. These women in particular are the women we are trying to support. Each of these pieces are mostly worn together. They are given to women by men.

GYPSETGIRL: Wow, these are extraordinary! So, tell me why you are here in New York.

Dr. Kahumbu: I am here working on a partnership with Amarula who supports the Maasai women.

GYPSETGIRL: I see, hence the many Amarula bottles. (I point to the line of bottles across from me)

Dr. Kahumbu: Yes, it’s a cream made from the Marula fruit which is a very famous and iconic tree in Africa that elephants love, and when the tree blooms, it produces buckets of these fruit. They fall on the ground and release this beautiful smell that attracts elephants from all around who come an eat the fruits and disperse them again through their travels. So the tree and the elephants are interlinked.

GYPSETGIRL: That’s such an interesting way to look at it. Unfortunately, I imagine the poachers take advantage of the opportunity of the elephants love of visiting the trees and eating from it?

Dr. Kahumbu: Yes, the poachers take advantage of any opportunity. Clearly though, it’s not the trees fault, but the people who are in the market for the ivory.

GYPSETGIRL: Yes I understand that. Do you think it comes down to a lack of education?

Dr. Kahumbu: Not necessarily, did you know that New York is one of the biggest markets for ivory in the world? And so is Washington. There are Americans that are highly educated who don’t know that every piece of ivory that you wear has resulted in an elephant being killed. When an elephant gets killed, it’s not just an elephant like any other animal, these are animals that have societies, cultures and families just like human beings. They grieve, they mourn. When poachers kill an elephant, they always go for the biggest, so you’re talking about the matriarchs, they are the older individuals in the families which stay together for life. So when you remove those wise elder individuals, you’re left with baby orphans who cause a lot of problems and are then killed even further because of their nuisance. So it really disrupts the entire planet and society which causes a lot of tension and trauma, which one could really relate to as a human being. It’s like a war. It’s like families who are disrupted by war. This is what is happening in lots of parts of Africa. In Southern Tanzania alone they’ve lost 75% of their elephants. So you can imagine what that means. It means that every family of elephants that lives in Tanzania is affected by the poaching crisis that’s going on.

GYPSETGIRL: It’s heartbreaking to hear that. I’ve always had an affinity with Africa since I was a small child. Africa has had a big influence on shaping my passion for animal conservation, and I understand that elephants have the same feeling as humans, so as a result, what is happening really enrages me.

Dr. Kahumbu: It’s very tragic. People around the world love elephants. We see them in our toys, we see them in our bed sheets, we see them on television. They’re everywhere. Elephants are one of the most beloved species on this planet and very few people know they are being killed. One every fifteen minutes, which literally means in our lifetimes, by 2030 they will be gone from the wild. We are trying to change that course by supporting education like this because there isn’t enough awareness.

Dr. Kahumbu: The campaign we are running is called “Don’t Let Them Disappear” We built a life-size elephant sculpture, meaning it was about 10 ft. Tall, in Union Square this past August 12th, which is World Elephant Day. It weighed the same as a huge elephant. It’s was created by a very famous Japanese sculptor, and we let it stand in the summer sun and melt as a symbol of the elephants disappearing. We have from this gotten a massive public engagement, because we invited people from New York and beyond to come see and engage with us, talk to me, learn more about the problem and learn more about how they can help. Actually, the other thing Amarula has done is from every bottle of liqueur sold in the US from the first of September until the end of the year, they will donate $1.00 to WildlifeDirect, so we can continue our work in Kenya.

GYPSETGIRL: What an original and thoughtful way to spread awareness!

GYPSETGIRL: I truly admire the work you have done with WildlifeDirect, tell me how you’ve made conservation your lively hood? Was there a catalyst or something that happened where you said “I have to do this”?

Dr. Kahumbu: I think, like many Kenyan’s, I grew up surrounded by wildlife in a very rural area. Which I still live around today. Kenya is my home. I live just south of the Nairobi National Park, just outside of, the wilderness area. I decided as a teenager that I was going to do conservation.

GYPSETGIRL: But a Park Ranger is quite a demanding job. What was it that drew you in to tackle that challenge?

Dr. Kahumbu: My mother! She wanted me to be a secretary. I was sent off to secretarial college like so many girls my age in that area. After three months there, my girlfriend and I were dying and we decided we were going to run away. We got on a bus which was unheard of for us and we went to the National Museums of Kenya to listen to the scientific lectures and then I decided then and there, that’s it! I want to be a ranger. I want to go out there and protect lions. I went off to talk to Richard Leakey who was in charge of that particular park. He was incredibly generous in that he listened to me, a seventeen-year-old with no university experience. He said, “Are you sure you want to be a ranger?” He looked at my grades and said he would help me get the job. I was encouraged and mentored from then on. I was given all these opportunities to go into these wild places and work with wild animals, other scientists and experts. It was that which really helped me to understand sort of what it would be like to be a ranger and what it would be like to be a scientist. So I decided I wanted to do conservation. You cannot really have any power or say unless you have the academic credentials, which is why I went to university to get my bachelors degree, my masters and finally my PhD here in the US at Princeton.

GYPSETGIRL: That’s so impressive! When did you become CEO of WildlifeDirect? How did that occur?

Dr. Kahumbu: My entire career was aimed towards working with the national government for the Kenya Wildlife Service and after working for them for two years, I realized I was not making the impact I wanted to make. So I left the wildlife service in 2007 without knowing what I could do and Richard Leakey invited me come and work for WildlifeDirect, which was an organization at the time that created a voice for people doing conservation, on the ground and all across Africa. I left the job I was doing, which was considered a great job in terms of money and prestige, to go back to work for Richard Leakey and it was phenomenal. I was creating campaigns to help not only raise awareness about the crisis of the African animals but make a real difference for them. I became the CEO in 2009 and I’ve been there ever since.

GYPSETGIRL: What a remarkable impact you’ve had!

GYPSETGIRL: I’d like to get back to the beadwork. The Oltome-Nadupo Womans Company is such an amazing vehicle to build awareness for the plight of the elephants and proving, as you were saying, that elephants can coexist with people. This is so important for people to know, in addition to it empowering the Maasai women that you’re working with. How did the organization begin and what parts have you helped to contribute to its success?

Dr. Kahumbu: So first, it’s really important that people know that African elephants and humanity evolved together. In fact, I think people love elephants because we literally have related to each other since the beginning of man kind, so it’s tattooed on our DNA that we have this relationship. Communities in Africa have lived with elephants forever. In fact, it’s amazing that the mammoths went extinct. In America, humans did not evolve with mammoths, they killed them off. In Africa, humans lived along side mammoths. In this particular community, in Maasai Land, women are not really empowered. It’s a very patriarchal society, and these women worked with us initially as an empowerment project to train them in whatever they wanted to be trained in that would allow them the empowerment they needed to have a greater say in their lives and future. In particularly in an alternative lively hood. They said they wanted to do beadwork and they wanted the name of their company to be related to elephants, so they named it Oltome-Nadupo, which means elephant success story. So this is why it’s so important, 147 women, many of them in their sixties, none of which have ever gone to school, so they can’t read or write created this company. In spite of the obstacles they faced, they really wanted to have a business of their own, which was a huge challenge for us, but they wanted to have a say. Empowerment for them meant financial independence. They aren’t allowed to own cattle or land, but they have a craft that is unique to them and the quality of their work is world-class. So in realizing this we said, “How can we turn their products into more than just tourism trinkets, and into something that has global appeal, and gives real value?” It’s art, what they produce, it’s really world-class art. For these women it’s jewelry they actually wear every day. A lot of people think they put it on for tourists and they don’t. They actually wear it all the time. They have all kinds of amazing folk-lore, cultural legends and stories about what each color means and their association of the different stories. It is related to their lively hoods and related to their livestock as well, which is a critical part of their survival and their status in society. Every piece is made by a woman, to then be given to another woman for a certain reason. Each piece is meaningful and authentic. You can actually smell within the pieces, the Maasai Home.

So to turn these products into something sellable on a global platform, we built a workshop and supplied these women with the highest quality materials to create the production and successfully target a fashion sector that is interested. The reason why this is so important for elephants is because ivory is also a fashion accessory. If it’s in fashion they can say don’t buy ivory, buy our traditional beadwork. It supports the women who create them and provides income so their lives can continue, which will ensure the elephants lives will continue. We don’t want these people to end up having to kill elephants out of desperation for income. In many other local communities, the people are killing elephants because they have no other means of generating income.

So here’s an opportunity for women to remain champions, to be whistleblowers when they see things going wrong, to defend elephants, and to engage with their community on conservation and protecting them.

GYPSETGIRL: How do the men of the communities feel about this new empowerment of women?

Dr. Kahumbu: The men have been extremely supportive!

GYPSETGIRL: That’s really special, I love to hear that.

GYPSETGIRL: So as you know, it’s challenging for many people to feel they can make real change. In that situation, what would be your advice for others to understand how they can feel confident that they are affecting change in their effort to raise awareness for the elephant crisis?

Dr. Kahumbu: The best evidence is when people who get involved see communities come together in all sectors. We have commercial brands partnering with NGO’s. Also, we are working with the government. As a result of these collaborations and joint efforts of many organizations, people on the ground and the media, poaching in Kenya has declined by 80%. So not only are the populations in Kenya safe, but they are growing. The giant tusked populations have also maintained a steady presence. Meaning that when people support the conservation, these giant tusked breeds can pass their powerful genetics down to their offspring. Thus proving the positive effects. The government has been a huge help. They don’t give us money, but what they give us is tremendous support. They give us platforms, attend our events, support us by giving us the ability to do all kinds of things. We have the first lady literally coming to the field. It was actually her research that sparked this project with the Maasai women in collaboration with saving elephants.

GYPSETGIRL: This is amazing, it’s so important for women to be able to come together and create a community of sisterhood.

GYPSETGIRL: It’s been such an education sitting here with you and learning so much about the plight of the African elephants. I thank you for that. Now, on a lighter note, I’d like to ask you a few specific questions I ask all of the well-traveled people I interview for GYPSETGIRL.

Dr. Kahumbu: Ask away!

GYPSETGIRL: Ok. What does travel mean to you?

Dr. Kahumbu: To me, travel is adventure. A delicious, decadent way of engaging my curiosity.

GYPSETGIRL : Where is your next adventure taking you?

Dr. Kahumbu: I’d like to go to Iceland!

GYPSETGIRL: What is your favorite destination and why?

Dr. Kahumbu: I can’t say I have one. I am always blown away by everywhere that I go. I’ve gone to China expecting to hate it and I actually fell in love with the country. I’ve discovered, if we just abandoned all our preconceptions and go to every place as a place of discovery, then we can truly be open to so much more than otherwise. One thing for me with traveling, is I love to go with people I really care about and who I can see the world with through their eyes as well. When I traveled to China with my son who was sixteen at the time. I saw it in a way that I would have never been able to see without him there.

GYPSETGIRL: I agree, I’ve never been to a place I haven’t loved! My next question is, who would be your favorite travel companion dead or alive? Or who is, but I think you may have already answered that.

Dr. Kahumbu: For sure my favorite travel companion is my son and maybe my brother. For the most part it would be family members and people who are close to me.

GYPSETGIRL: If you were given the choice, what would your ideal form of transportation be to a destination? A plane, train, automobile, boat or an even a spaceship?

Dr. Kahumbu: Definitely a boat! I do also like going by road, but I don’t like planes so much and I’m not crazy about trains either, but boats by far are the best.

GYPSETGIRL: What is your must have travel item that you can’t live without?

Dr. Kahumbu: Well there’s quite a few! But my hiking boots are an absolute must have because I like to walk and hike.

GYPSETGIRL: A very practical answer, usually I get booze lol. Well, Dr Kahumbu, this has been so informative and enjoyable. I know that the followers and readers of GYPSETGIRL and Fashion for Conservation will take a lot away from this. Thank you so much for your time.

Dr. Kahumbu: Absolutely! Thank you for coming by.

As all who follow GYPSETGIRL are aware, two of the biggest parts of my life are fashion and the outdoors. So it’s an easy conclusion that the organization Fashion for Conservation would be a company I would happily be involved with. That being said, when they asked me to document a photo shoot for their collaboration with WildlifeDirect to celebrate the amazing beadwork from the Oltome Nadupo Women’s Company and for Fashion for Conservation global showcase and fashion show “Elephantasia” (being held on September 18th at London Fashion Week), to raise awareness for the poaching plight of the African elephants, how could I refuse!

“Elephantasia”is the brain child of creative power houses Ava Holmes, Nazanin Alvarez and Samantha Zwicker and showcases elephant inspired clothing designed by fashion designers across the world, including myself. This cause is so important to me. It is an environmental disaster and is in such desperate need to be a priority on the global preservation radar. In understanding this, I feel a basic obligation as a human being to oblige, beyond the affinity I feel for Fashion for Conservation. So off I went to Brooklyn to cover this fun day of fashion, photography and most importantly working to keep the elephants safe.

My elephant inspired designed dress for “Elephantasia” on the runway at Atzaro Fashion Festival..

The day began at Wrythe studio in Brooklyn, NY. I proudly arrived with the beautiful beadwork by the Oltome Nadupo Women’s Company, entrusted to me by Wildlife Direct. The Oltome Nadupo Women’s Company was created by the women of the Maasai Tribe in Kenya, Africa to bring more financial stability to the women and children of the tribe and to help stop the poaching of the elephants for their ivory. It’s important to understand that the Maasia have a deep understanding of this crisis. They live and interact with the elephants everyday and see first hand the negative ramifications from the killing of these creatures. In turn, the elephants have a deep understanding and respect of the Maasai as well. Simply put, elephants get it! They feel emotions like human beings. They feel sorrow and empathy and truly understand suffering and love. Elephants feel anger and remorse too. They have the capacity for logical thinking. The capacity only one other animal has, the human animal. They are acutely aware of what’s happening to them, which makes this crisis even more heartbreaking. The Maasai recognize this and unfortunately have to witness the aftermath of the slaughter ( occurring at the rate of one every 15 minutes). In creating the Oltome Nadupo Women’s Company, they are in my opinion, making benevolent efforts to stop the destruction. So, considering this and all of the Maasai people’s extensive knowledge of the situation, it would be a smart choice to follow their lead..no? This is why FFC and Wildlife Direct have rallied around Oltome Nadupo Women’s Company in using their gorgeous beadwork and jewelry to spread the word. I was so happy to assist in this and honored to deliver what to me is priceless artwork. And I could see from the reaction of the other ladies on set, they all agreed!

The photo shoot started with hair and makeup for the gorgeous and lucky model who had the job to pose for the campaign, along with the photographer Kimber Capriotti working with the lighting to ensure every shot did justice to each piece of jewelry. Between the two of these talented ladies they created beautiful images and really brought the beadwork to life!

All in all it was a a great day, with inspiring women working together to help continue in growing awareness for a very worthy cause.

Stay tuned for more to come from my work with Fashion for Conservations and WildlifeDirect!

Elephant conservation has always been near and dear to my heart. How could it not be? These majestic and intelligent creatures are so special and nurturing and a lot like human beings. More like humans than most understand. Did you know that elephants have memories like human beings? Elephants actually visit the graves of their dead family members just like humans do. They remember the happy experiences, as well the heartbreaking tragedies they endure. For example, witnessing the slaughter of their herd/family members for their tusks by greedy poachers. These beautiful giants carry these haunting and brutal memories with them for a lifetime. It is a tragedy that any living creature would be subjected to this. Did you know that if it isn’t stopped now, elephants will be extinct in our lifetime? This fact is crushing to me. So when Fashion for Conservation invited me to create a dress for Elephantasia and to have GYPSETGIRL join them in their crusade to spread awareness and raise money for elephant conservation, I jumped at the chance.

The launch of this seasons Elephantasia showcase was in Ibiza on July 18th at the Atzaró Fashion Festival 2017. It was a magical evening, full of uber bohemian style, a fabulous fashion show, pop-up-shops and most importantly recognition of the plight of African elephants.

The GYPETGIRL Elephantasia Dress

There’s so much to share, I don’t even know where to start! The night began with the arrival of the 2000 breathtaking international glitterati that some like myself, came all the way to Ibiza just for this extraordinary event. The cocktails flowed as people walked and danced around the property exploring the amazing food to sample and the boho-luxe wares each vendor had to offer their enthusiastic buyers.

As the sun set, drawing a kaleidoscope of pink and orange in the sky the show began to the sound of a flute with what seemed like pixies coming from out of a forest. I was soon to discover that these “pixies’ are some of the gorgeous members of the internationally known World Family Ibiza. A nomadic group of glamorous gypsies who travel the world to design and sell their incredible fashion collections (I couldn’t resist taking a few of their colorful and luxurious pieces back home with me.).

As the World Family Ibiza members left the runway, their designs soon followed in colors and textures that took my breath away!

The most amazing part of the show for me of course, was seeing all of the mega-talented designers looks that were all elephant inspired for Elephantasia. They were very unique in style, striking and exceptional in their own right. I truly can say that as I watched each look come down the runway, I really loved how through fabric and design each piece embraced the spirit of the African elephant in such an artistic way.

What an amazing experience the whole evening was! I feel so privileged to have had this opportunity and to be included with so many other designers that I find so inspiring. I hope that you feel inspired as well. We all share this planet together, even though in some cases our countries have borders that are separated by oceans. Nonetheless, we all need the elephants to keep this world turning. African and Asian alike, and they need us to save their lives. So please do what you can to help support Fashion for Conservation and all the organizations doing what they can to prevent extinction and to save all the worlds beautiful and much needed creatures.

The GYPSETGIRL Autumn/Winter 2017 campaign shoot is complete! It was so much fun and a great success. We shot on the very cool Rooftop at the Providence G in Providence, Rhode Island. Our model Hayley nailed every shot with her gorgeous piercing blue eyes and mega-talented photographer Myke Yeager effortlessly captured Haley’s amazing work! With great people and positive vibes all around, we couldn’t have asked for a better day!

This collection named Rock n’ Roll Nomad was inspired by the colors and textures I came across throughout the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey. There’s lots of leather and subtle textures and was designed for women on-the-go, ensuring that while you look fabulous, you will feel very comfortable as well. I feel that alone makes them great for day-to-day. The pieces can also be mixed and matched with each other to create multiple outfits within the collection. With all of the traveling I do I was mindful to design this collection to have clothes that can easily be worn together, eliminating so much of the headache in deciding what to pack and leaving more room in your suitcase for the treasures you’ll want to bring back from your adventures.

The Rock n’ Roll Nomad collection has already received an amazing response and has been featured in British Vogue! To read the story about how this incredible opportunity occurred click here to see the blog post.

It’s such a wonderful new journey to be on now that I’m designing clothes. There’s so much to learn and I’m enjoying every second of it. When I have the opportunity to work with the models and photographers and see my designs come to life, it’s a real adrenaline rush. It gives me such a sense of euphoria and satisfaction. If the GYPSETGIRL Autumn/Winter 2017 campaign shoot is any indication of the future success of the collection, I feel confident of what’s to come. I can’t wait for autumn to arrive!

GYPSETGIRL featured in British Vogue! Who would have thought it would happen this quickly! I’m thrilled to share the news that the GYPSETGIRL 2017 Autumn/Winter collection, Rock n’ Roll Nomad, is now a part of the most iconic fashion magazine in the world!

I couldn’t even believe it when I received the news! It’s amazing how life works sometimes and when people say timing is everything, believe it! On Easter Sunday, my best friend in London, Izzy, was at a gathering and just happened to be talking with an editor at British Vogue at the same moment that I texted her the photos from the runway show I had just done at Massif Fashion Week in Denver Colorado. Out of pure excitement and her love of the collection, Izzy showed the editor she was chatting with the photos and the editor loved them! She immediately told Izzy she would like her to connect her and I to discuss a feature of the collection in Vogue. It happened just like that! Within 5 minutes from the time I sent the message to Izzy my life changed! The feeling of vindication was palpable after working so hard and persevering through some very challenging circumstances personally over the last couple of years. That said, I’m grateful for those challenges as well as the success, because without them, this success would not be possible. No matter how bad things can be sometimes, always keep the faith that you are going in the direction that the universe intends. Some lessons may be harder than others, but you’re meant to learn them. They will bring you to the other side.

The GYPSETGIRL Fall/Winter 2017 collection is here and I was thrilled to debut it at Massif Fashion Week in Denver, Colorado last month! We here at GYPSETGIRL are so excited to share it with you! It was such a fun collection to create. I drew my inspiration from the colors and textures I discovered throughout the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey and named it Rock N’ Roll Nomad. There’s lots of leather and supple textures in the pieces ensuring that while you look uber-chic you will feel very comfortable. That alone makes them great for day to day. The pieces can also be mixed and matched with each other to create multiple outfits within the collection.

I’m very proud of my first ready-to-wear launch and have to say, there’s just something about having a runway show. To see clothes you’ve designed and worked so tirelessly to create take life as you watch the models walk down the runway is an experience like none other. It’s inspiring to me because I never set out on this journey to be a fashion designer, I began the blog simply because I travel so much and many people were interested in the enclaves I traveled to and from, as well as the unique and interesting places and things I came across as a result. The want to begin designing grew organically from these experiences and the compliments I received from the different clothing, textiles and jewelry I collected along the way.

I hope you’ll be inspired by the GYPSETGIRL Fall/Winter 2017 collection to embrace your inner rock n’ roll nomad and get on a plane to take that bucket-list trip. You too will be awed and inspired to want to see more and more of the world. The self-discovery you’ll begin to understand will change you for the better and there’ll be no going back. Travel is indeed the only thing that makes you richer.

Be sure to click on the Shop tab or click here to check out the GYPSETGIRL Bazaar to see the beautiful GYPSETGIRL Resort Collection and accessories available for that next amazing adventure in your future!

Based in a fashion photography and film studio, Massif Fashion Week produces a collection runway shows that are filmed and photographed in high-quality formats to be viewed by a broader audience. The Massif Fashion Week shows serve as a platform for local, national, and international designers and brands to display their work and grow their following.

I am so excited to participate in Massif Fashion Week here in Denver, Colorado. I will be showcasing the GYPSETGIRL Fall/Winter 2017 ready-to-wear collection on the closing night of their fashion week, today April 9th.

I am so excited to be back in Colorado, being I have lived here for 10 years. Living in Colorado was such an amazing and impactful time of my life. I took so much away from it in how it affected my take on fashion. The Native American vibe and free-spirited, alternative philosophy’s embraced by so many here, has had a direct impact on my designs and is evident in this current collection, Rock-n-Roll Nomad. The collection is full of leather and supple textures (as seen in the peacock-blue, velvet and leather suit on the model in the photo) in the pieces, ensuring that while you look fabulous, you will feel very comfortable. That alone makes them great for day-to-day. The pieces can also be mixed and matched with each other to create multiple outfits within the collection. The GYPSETGIRL F/W 2017 collection will be available in the GYPSETGIRL BAZAAR (pre-orders available next month) and in retail stores in September.

Below are couple of photos of designers collections from last years show. I was so excited to have been invited to Massif Fashion Week as 3 designers from last year were invited to show at New York Fashion Week this year. Here’s hoping!

Georgine Ratelband, fashion designer and friend, had another spectacular showing at NYFW F/W 2017. Her Fall/Winter collection of luxury women’s wear was full of the complimentary mixes she’s come to be known for. Bold patterned jackets were mixed and matched with slinky high hemmed-dresses. Strong leather accents –both black and green –were coupled with luxurious furs and delicate sheer tops. The hues and structure of many pieces offered a subtle nod to military styling, while still remaining distinctly feminine in silhouette.

Metallics of antique and rose gold were seen throughout show, both in outwear as well as dresses and separates. The shift dresses were playful in their mix of materials and proportion, however, all the while maintaining sophistication. In Georgine’s line, there is a clear and intricate balance between masculine and feminine. It is seen throughout her designs, and was prominently displayed in her F/W 2017 separates—where tuxedo stripes met delicate velvets and color-blocked silks.

The chic, efficiency of all black head-to-toe was re-invented and given a new life on the Georgine runway. A calling card of New Yorkers everywhere, the color black played a dominant role in the show, but the textures of each outfit are what told the story and ultimately stole the show. Georgine Ratelband’s Fall/Winter collection stayed true to the overall vision of her line. It highlighted a confidant woman who is the immaculate balance of intricate and powerful, delicately sophisticated and unequivocally badass.

The area of Tulum, Mexico situated on the Caribbean Coastline, boosts stunning crystal clear water and powdery white sand beaches. Aside from its tropical beaches though, this bohemian hot spot is known for its well-preserved Mayan ruins that were built in the 13th century. Tulum is a place to expand your imagination through wondering about the historic Maya and to relax and enjoy the sun and the Caribbean Sea.

The uniqueness of Tulum is embraced through the history of the old Mayan city. It was one of the few Mayan coast cities that were protected by a wall. The individuality that this city holds is special to gypsetters because there is more to this place than just the eye can see. This is a place of discovery and inspiration. A big part of the draw for me to keep returning to this very chill enclave.

This boho chic locale on the playa, does not leave you bored with the amazing resorts, wellness activities and restaurants to choose from. To name a few I’ll start with the Amansala Resort, which is located on the Riviera Maya. This Eco Chic resort offers three different yoga retreats that you can choose from, making it easy to select which is most suitable for you. The Amansala is just a short 10-minute drive into town where you can shop at local boutiques and dine on some delicious Mexican delicacies. In the heart of the Mayan Riviera I dined at Mur Mur quite a few times for breakfast and dinner. Mur Mur serves authentic Mexican cuisine that is affordable and has its patrons coming back for more. Aside from the wonderful food I enjoyed, I found the lovely and newly opened boutique called Miguelina by designer Miguelina Gambaccini. Miguelina, the boho inspired boutique carries its luxury apparel line for women that’s solely dedicated to travel.
