When sentient artificial intelligence becomes reality

Two things humans often do: We anthropomorphise, and we dehumanise. Which is, if you think about it, a rather curious dichotomy: when we anthropomorphise, we ascribe human characteristics to inhuman beings, and when we dehumanise, we do the opposite, denying the full and equal humanity of other members of our own species. The classic example of this is someone who invests deeply in animal welfare, but doesn't care about human rights abuses.

Why?

In October, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency premiered its most ambitious humanoid robot contest ever: a competition to build robots that could replace humans in disaster areas like the 2011 multiple-reactor meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Entrants in the challenge must design robots to perform feats of strength and mobility, such as removing debris and climbing ladders, as well as chores normally thought of as involving intellect: autonomous decision-making tasks like choosing which leaking valve to close.

If emotional reactions were measured, they could be valuable data points for better design and development. Emotional artificial intelligence, also called affective computing, may be on its way. But should it be? After all, we're already struggling to cope with the always-on nature of the devices in our lives. Yes, those gadgets would be more efficient if they could respond when we are frustrated, bored or too busy to be interrupted, yet they would also be intrusive in ways we can't even fathom today.

Your brain is a collection of neurons — tiny cells that use electro-chemical signals to send and receive information. But as Google builds an artificial brain that will help drive everything from its web search engine to Google Street View to the voice-recognition app on Android smartphones, it’s using very different materials. Among them: graphics microprocessors, the same sort of silicon chips that were first designed to process images and videos on your desktop computer.
