Hackbloc Stands in Solidarity Against Pacific Northwest Grand Jury

Hackbloc has signed this statement of solidarity against the Grand Jury currently convening in Seattle, WA that is targeting the radical community in the pacific northwest. To sign this letter, please visit No Political Repression. For more information about how Grand Juries are used to infiltrate, intimidate, and repress social movements see the Grand Jury Resistance Project. Fuck the police!

On Wednesday July 25th, the FBI conducted a series of coordinated raids against activists in Portland, Olympia, and Seattle. They subpoenaed several people to a special federal grand jury, and seized computers, black clothing and anarchist literature. This comes after similar raids in Seattle in July and earlier raids of squats in Portland.

Though the FBI has said that the raids are part of a violent crime investigation, the truth is that the federal authorities are conducting a political witch-hunt against anarchists and others working toward a more just, free, and equal society. The warrants served specifically listed anarchist literature as evidence to be seized, pointing to the fact that the FBI and police are targeting this group of people because of their political ideas. Pure and simple, these raids and the grand jury hearings are being used to intimidate people whose politics oppose the state’s agenda. During a time of growing economic and ecological crises that are broadly affecting people across the world, it is an attempt to push back any movement towards creating a world that is humane, one that meets every person’s needs rather than serving only the interests of the rich.

This attack does not occur in a vacuum. Around the country and around the world, people have been rising up and resisting an economic system that puts the endless pursuit of profit ahead of the basic needs of humanity and the Earth. From the Arab Spring to the Occupy movement to now Anaheim, people are taking to the streets. In each of these cases, the state has responded with brutal political repression. This is not a coincidence. It is a long-term strategy by state agencies to stop legitimate political challenges to a status quo that exploits most of the world’s people.

We, the undersigned, condemn this and all other political repression. While we may have differences in ideology or chose to use different tactics, we understand that we are in a shared struggle to create a just, free, and liberated world, and that we can only do this if we stand together. We will not let scare tactics or smear campaigns divide us, intimidate us, or stop us from organizing and working for a better world.

No more witch-hunts! An injury to one is an injury to all.

To get SlowLoris running from an Ubuntu Live/Install CD (download at Ubuntu.com), you need to do the following:
-Download the slowloris tool to somewhere, by default it goes to the home folder/ubuntu
-Open the terminal by going to the applications button on the top left and searching for it
-Run the command sudo chmod +x slowloris.pl (hit enter to execute the command) to make it executable
-Run the command sudo apt-get install libnet-ssleay-perl liblwp-protocol-https-perl to install the dependencies for slowloris
-Run the command ./slowloris.pl -dns targetserver.com To stop slowloris, hold Control+C or close the terminal.

Greek ECD Tool (cross-platform) (this is added to a ZIP archive so you can download it. If you open the html file in a web browser, it will automatically start attacking your machine):
Hackbloc Hosts Computer Security Workshop Series in Olympia

Are you interested in learning how to beef up your computer security, encrypt your hard drive, or maintain your privacy online? Maybe you want to learn how to browse the web anonymously, fight government surveillance, or get around web filters?

Learn computer security from the people who know it best: hackers. Not the ski-mask donning figures who furiously type away at keyboards with an evil green glow that the media portrays, but the hackers who make and break technology for the thrill of learning while upholding strong ethics of free speech and the right to personal privacy.

While you'd normally have to pay hundreds of dollars to learn these skills from a computer security firm, we're offering them to you for absolutely nothing. All these workshops are free and open to the public. Whether you are an activist looking to combat government surveillance and repression, a journalist looking to protect their sources, or just somebody looking to gain a better understanding of computer security principles, these are workshops you can't miss. This is a one time opportunity and if you find some weak excuse to not come, you'll never get this chance again!

On Saturday May 26th, join Students for a Democratic Society and Hackbloc (http://www.hackbloc.org) for a workshop series on communications security and online privacy. If you can use Facebook and are willing to learn something new, you already have everything you need to understand the skills we will be presenting in these workshops. These events are designed to be accessible, so please don't let tech phobia prevent you from learning these important skills.

These workshops are hands-on so bring a laptop or you will feel very lost. Mac (OS X) and PC (Windows/Linux) are supported.

Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/167814623347679

-------------------------------------
Basic Computer and Communications Security

Learn how to browse the web anonymously, send encrypted instant messages, and send anonymous email! We will also cover (depending on time) installing anti-virus and firewall software.

When: Saturday May 26th, 2012 10AM-12PM
Where: Room B1105, Seminar II Building, Evergreen State College, 2700 Evergreen Parkway NW, Olympia, WA 98505

-------------------------------------
Disk and Email Encryption

Learn what encryption is, how it works, and what it can protect you from. Learn how to encrypt files/folders, flash drives, emails, and even your entire hard disk!

When: Saturday May 26th, 2012 3-5PM
Where: Room B1105, Seminar II Building, Evergreen State College, 2700 Evergreen Parkway NW, Olympia, WA 98505

FBI seizes server providing anonymous remailer and many other services from colocation facility.

Read the full press release here

On Wednesday, April 18, at approximately 16:00 Eastern Time, U.S. Federal authorities removed a server from a colocation facility shared by Riseup Networks and May First/People Link in New York City. The seized server was operated by the European Counter Network (“ECN”), the oldest independent internet service provider in Europe, who, among many other things, provided an anonymous remailer service, Mixmaster, that was the target of an FBI investigation into the bomb threats against the University of Pittsburgh.

“The company running the facility has confirmed that the server was removed in conjunction with a search warrant issued by the FBI,” said May First/People Link director Jamie McClelland. “The server seizure is not only an attack against us, but an attack against all users of the Internet who depend on anonymous communication.”

Disrupted in this seizure were academics, artists, historians, feminist groups, gay rights groups, community centers, documentation and software archives and free speech groups. The server included the mailing list “cyber rights” (the oldest discussion list in Italy to discuss this topic), a Mexican migrant solidarity group, and other groups working to support indigenous groups and workers in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. In total, over 300 email accounts, between 50-80 email lists, and several other websites have been taken off the Internet by this action. None are alleged to be involved in the anonymous bomb threats.

“The FBI is using a sledgehammer approach, shutting down service to hundreds of users due to the actions of one anonymous person,” said Devin Theriot-Orr, a spokesperson for Riseup. “This is particularly misguided because there is unlikely to be any information on the server regarding the source of the threatening emails.”

“We sympathize with the University of Pittsburgh community who have had to deal with this frightening disruption for weeks. We oppose such threatening actions. However, taking this server won’t stop these bomb threats. The only effect it has is to also disrupt e-mail and websites for thousands of unrelated people,” continues Mr. Theriot-Orr. “Furthermore, the network of anonymous remailers that exists is not harmed by taking this machine. So we cannot help but wonder why such drastic action was taken when authorities knew that the server contained no useful information that would help in their investigation.”

Hackmeet 2011 Report Back

Hackmeet 2011 took place October 15th - 16th in San Francisco at Noisebridge and a grip of the HB crew made it out to take part in the event. Hackmeet started a few years back in response to the closed and oppressive environment of the Adobe conference that was happening in San Diego. This was the third year of the conference which focused on creating space for discussions amongst radical tech folk. Below are some of my takes on the talks that were given along with a few notes from the two presentations I participated in that I said I would post.

Agitkid of kill radio and indymedia (since the WTO days) presented on consensus decision making. One of the main things that I took from this was the idea that for a group to be able to use consensus decision making process it is critical that there is defined points of unity, giving Indymedia's Principles of Unity as an example. The lack of principle's of unity in the various occupations across the states may point to why consensus decision making has been so difficult. Other useful suggestions where:

having regular meetings with a time limit

members should take turn facilitating meetings, taking notes, and keeping track of the non-verbal communication of the group (making sure certain individuals are not dominating conversation, calling breaks

having subcommittees work though topics that are presenting a lot of difficulty to larger group outside of the meeting and bringing back findings to the larger group

Restricting blocking on topics to concerns that directly come in conflict with the points of unity

Our very own Flatline facilitated a discussion of technology and privilege. This discussion focused on ways that some folk are marginalized in tech circles and in regards to access to tech. Some of the issues that were brought up were in regards to making hacker spaces accessible to more then just straight white men, making sure that your websites are designed to be accessible to visually impaired folk, as well as some feedback on how a "apprenticeship" program can work towards having diverse participation in a tech collective. This last bit resulted in a personal discussion with the success that tao.ca had with a mentor-ship program where no white men got root to their systems without taking on a new non-white man to show how to accomplish different sysadmin tasks where eventually the folk they were teaching were able to admin the system on their own. Another point was brought up by an older SDS member who talked about how implicit privilege came implicit responsibility. He talked about how privileged folks had the opportunity and privilege to take actions for change that weren't accessible to less privileged folk. The basics of all this is that if we oppose oppressive institutions but are still replicating the power dynamics of those institutions aren't we missing the point. I would argue that we are and that if your group is predominantly straight white men it is a good time to start asking why. Here is another review and better synopsis of this talk.

Silverfox gave a quick overview of concepts and tools for offensive and defensive security that could have been fleshed out into a 4 year course.

Liz of geekfeminism.org led a interesting discussion on what offensive security campaigns with a feminist perspective might look like. Discussions of what the targets would be and what tactics would be used. Geekfeminism is a rad site that consistently has a radical analysis of patriarchy in tech circles. Watching Liz disarm some bro try and splain what he thought feminism was after coming into the discussion was pretty spectacular. Check more about what Liz thought about all this here.

The next day Evoltech led a brief overview of the work that has been and is currently being done by the March-Hare Communications Collective. The Operator Distribution is still not ready for a beta release but should be in the upcoming months. When the group was posed with the question, "How can communications / offensive security teams assist street action" the responses where:

Communication between working groups

training people to use a specific tool

concerns people have about security as a boundary

sharing information

decentralizing communication infrastructure

more mobile device secure communication tools

secure channels between people in the street

a way to verify that communication is secure

encrypted handhold radios

Voice to text

Building our own networks

Operators monitoring police communication / scanners

trainings on how to be a part of a comms team / trainings

create a wiki to help people design IRL games as trainings

working with homes not jails or other non-violent groups to setup infrastructure

instead of focusing on supporting all mobile devices focus on supporting at least one device so that teams can be assured that if they have that device the application will work

Someone who has game authoring experience stepped up to help design a role play game that will help teach folk to run comms and work the bugs out upcoming March-Hare releases. Expect to see this getting worked out in a wiki on march-hare.org in the upcoming months.

Flatline and Silverfox talked about the progress and future plans of Openwatch - the cross platform cop watching app which provides a way to record and in real-time upload video to an off-site server for safe keeping. Folk from the Copwatch mobile team steped in to share the work they have been doing to support a similar effort but for feature phones that rely on a mms back-end.

Evoltech really bombed the DDOS presentation for beginners presentation after not being able to get the projector up and running in a different room. Meanwhile Silverfox discussed the new Hailstorm node.js tool for load testing websites. Evoltech eventually bailed on the hands on presentation and ended the presentation with a presentation of a phone DOS attack as released by b14ck based on pycall. The attack works by leveraging python with asterisk by creating automated call files for asterisk to process. Feed a simple app a file with a list of phone numbers and it will continually simultaneously dial each one leaving the phone in an unusable state. This attack can be used to consume all of the available trunks of a company's voice service or all of the out of band cell phones of police during a mobilization forcing communication back onto monitor-able police radio. It was pointed out that in a mass mobilization situation if this attack was performed to call all phones serviced by a single station that you would be dosing not just the phones you were targeting but all of the other callers that needed to make calls using that station. The additional benefit of using this tool is that it only uses sip headers to initiate the call which requires a low amount of bandwidth as compared to the high bandwidth demands of RTP once the call is answered, but as soon as the call is answered the call is terminated. As a result a large number of lines can be tied up without buying a lot of minutes from a sip/iax termination service. All that is needed is the ability to anonymously purchase service from a sip terminator. This tool will be weaponized in an upcoming Operator Distribution release. For those that were looking forward to the presentation and at least wanted access to the tools evoltech sends sincere apologies but offers the following download of notes and scripts that were going to be presented on in the talk.

There were a number of other awesome presentations including a very slick presentation
on windows cracking and general techniques for perverting the .NET framework which I will be reviewing in the upcoming weeks.

How to beat anti-piracy measures and make backups of your CDs/DVDs in Linux.
Communiques, news, and legal support info from anonymous and antisec
... and much much more!

"What we need most to organize in the digital world, the social media that we all use, is controlled once again by 1%. We are the 99% of the internet-age. The same
sociopathic corporations and governments that exploit us in our daily lives are also expanding their digital dominion. For years, internet activism was considered the domain of a vanguard of hackers, waiting for anonymous, lulzsec or other groups to erect the digital barricades. Even if in our political lives we reject vanguardism, we are still waiting on these special few to do battle for us. We need a hacking movement that allows the 99% to get involved and shape the goals tactics and strategy of our digital protest. The hackers need to join the users, not lead them."

Questions? Comments? Article Submissions? Get a hold of us at: staff [at] hackbloc [dot] org. We can get bulk copies for distro and for your infoshop/social center/space.

Thanks to everyone who helps keep our bits flowing securely and to everyone who helped work on this issue of the zine: Ringo, Discordia, Anonymous, The Pirate Bay,
lulzsec and antisec attack the pigs again!

Released this weekend were dumps of data from servers running services for over 70 police agencies in Missouri by #antisec and dumps from a server hosting information on Brazil federal police. The dumps include Personally identifiable information on officers including emails, SSN, systems information, password hashes, some CC info as well as code to custom (aka vulnerable) web applications.

With the current UK Riots after a police murder, recent shootings of people in Oakland, the violent repression of dissent in Seattle, and violence against peoples everywhere perpetrated by the thugs of the state it is nice to see some support from the hacker underground. From hackbloc and the rest of us fighting against the pigs big thanks and hugs to lulzsec and antisec for the success of the recent attacks. As the members of our own communities get taken out in the struggle in the streets we understand the pain and anger when a comrade gets nabbed.
