Sigma 28mm f/1.8 Aspherical ii High-Speed Wide

It has been a while since i wrote something. But i saw that this blog has a lot of viewers coming in for this lens. I have made a blog post, not much of a review previously on 2010 http://hair3e.blogspot.com/2010/12/sigma-28mm-f18-aspherical-ii-non-ex-dg.html and saw alot of traffic coming in for that. Now i will re-review the lens again. Not much of review on the internet for this lens and is quite rare to find now, especially a good copy. The Sigma 28mm f/1.8 Aspherical ii lens is an old lens from the 90s and has already been discontinued. Replaced by the newer Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX DG.

The Sigma 28mm F/1.8 wide angle features high speed with compact and light weight design. The lens incorporates floating focus in combination of the total lens elements focusing and the internal focusing with 2 aspherical lens elements, which produce outstanding optical performance. An effective "Perfect Lens Hood" will be supplied as the standard accessory. The lens has matte "ZEN" finish like other Sigma lense.

2010 : I bought the lens from another Sony Alpha user for nearly RM500 (estimated $150USD) which was in a bad condition optically and without the lens hood. The optics was infected by fungus and affected the coating, that made the images come from the lens look less contrasty, inaccurate color, purple-ish tint. Images seems to look vintage-like lomo effect. However the sharpness is great, and a bit post-process of the image can give punchy contrasty vivid photo. 2014 : I saw the lens on sale by pparcheta on ebay and paid for it immediately. Took nearly a month for the lens to reach me. Came with lens hood and front cap. It was in great condition physically and optically.

Quick review
Positive:
+ Lightweight and small

- Old lens (repair and fix is not possible)

Since the day i got it, i have been ditching my 50mm. I spent most day snapping picture of my nephew, which with 50mm is quite difficult as the depth of field is too thin and most shot is out of focus (OOF) as babies moves alot. 28mm is an ideal focal range to shoot him, photojournalistic way (not the proper baby photoshoot). Capturing the moments is easier and the depth of field (DOF) is not too great as 50mm so i could include the background more rather than blur everything. The Sigma 28mm f/1.8 Aspherical ii has been my go to lens for now.

I love the 50mm focal range and with wide open aperture its nice to capture as what our eyes see. However sometimes i need wider focal for group shots such as for weddings. Previously i did get the Sony 28-75 f/2.8 SAM (SAL2875) just for the purpose of use for wide angle shots. Now with the Sigma 28mm f/1.8 Aspherical ii the Sony 28-75 f/2.8 is resting in drybox (i might let it go maybe).

I have yet to try the Sigma 28mm f/1.8 Aspherical ii on photoshoots or jobs, but i know it will perform well.

Lens comparison :
# Sigma 28mm f/1.8 Aspherical ii (bad copy)
Previously i had the bad copy of this lens, comparing to that i would say getting the good copy is consider lucky or a miracle as it is rare to see one in market , especially in Malaysia. The bad copy has bad optics, terrible color rendition, lack contrast, has purple-ish tint color and bad flare control. The only issue with the newer copy is the flare control but from my shooting style wont be a problem.

# Sony 28-75 f/2.8 SAM (SAL2875)
The SAL2875 is a good lens with moderate price range. Optically is great at wider angle but when zoomed the sharpness is not as great. When stopping down to f/4.0 the lens perform better. Comparing the SAL2875 to Sigma 28mm f/1.8 Aspherical ii , at 28mm ; the Sigma 28mm f/1.8 is better capability in lowlight. Comparing at same f/2.8 aperture, the Sigma 28mm f/1.8 looks sharper but the SAL2875 is good at the center focus point.

The SAL2875 is better paired with newer camera as it has AF-D and for bodies like Sony a99 has the inbody lens correction for micro adjustment, distortion and vignetting. However the SAL2875 doesnt support DMF mode but works with screw mount lenses.

# Sony / Minolta 28mm f/2.8
I used to own a Minolta 28mm f/2.8 lens, the lens is light and small. However the performance is not as good as a prime should. Only by stopping down to f/4.0 the images are good. At f/2.8 the image are soft. The Sigma 28mm f/1.8 is better than Minolta 28mm f/2.8 at any aperture.

# Other lenses
There are a few other lenses in the near similar focal range for Sony / Minolta A mount. However i do not own to compare. Sigma 28mm f/1.8 Aspherical ii Review
Light and small.
Fit nicely on small dslr or pro level body and even mounted on NEX series.

Built is solid.

Steel or metal barrel.

Optically is sharp from wide open in the central region and
This lens render bokeh / out of focus greatly at wide open.
Combined with tact sharp at wide open aperture, i rarely shoot other than f/1.8 (for normal shots, not landscape shots).

Fast focussing although with only screw mount.

Noisy AF
Screw mount. No focus drive mechanism as it is old lens tech .
No USM / SSM / SWM / SWD / XSM / SDM / HSM

Distortion control for a wide angle lens is quite good.
Where i dont mind shooting portraiture with it even on 35mm Full Frame.

No back or front focus issue , no need for AF calibration on body.
Lucky me getting a great copy :)

Has inbody focussing mechanism so the filter does not turn during focussing.

Focus ring is smooth and easy.
Combined with focus peeking mode on my dslr, everything is easy peasy.

Minimum focussing distance (mfd) is 0.3m / 30cm / 300mm.
There are lenses that go much nearer , the Sony 24mm f/2.0 Distagon T* ZA SSM which is 190mm.

7 bladed aperture.
With small aperture is easy to get sunstar.

Flare control and CA is low to moderate.
Not much to be expected from an old era lens. Flare and fringing might be fisible but proper technique and control can reduce or eliminate them.

Old lens
No motor or af mechanism like the newer Sigma with Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM). But AF with screw mount is still fast and accurate.
Not possible to be repaired or fixed anymore.

Australia 003 : The Mermaid Beach

Gold Coast beach is 57km long coastline stretch, with some of the most popular surf breaks in Australiaand the world including, South Stradbroke Island, The Spit, Main Beach,Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach, Nobby Beach, Miami, Burleigh Beach, Burleigh Heads, Tallebudgera Beach, Palm Beach, Currumbin Beach, Tugun, Bilinga, Kirra, Coolangatta,Greenmount, Rainbow Bay, Snapper Rocks and Froggies Beach (wikipedia).

We stayed nearby Mermaid Beach at the Turtle Beach Resort, around 10min walk to the beach. Morning was very very cold , only had few chance for sunrise photoshoot coz so cozy in bed :P

Australia 002 : Day Two at Brisbane

Second day at Australia, spent most of the day in Brisbane city as we only stay in Brisbane for 2 days 1 night. Stayed at Aabon Apartments at Lisson Grove which is in walking distance to Wooloowin train station. Took the train to the city, 1 trip costs us around 30 Aussie which means nearly rm200 for return trip :(
So travel in Australia thru train is costly, my dad rented a car the next day till end of trip at Australia (booked earlier so much cheaper).

The train was very efficient and fast, also equipped with Wifi for FREE. sadly not all train and even malls or coffee shop offers free wifi in the city... so no checking in on 4sq , no instagrams and no tweets :0

The city of Brisbane is very clean, so is most cities except KL lol. Stroll around to find the car rental before taking the car the next day. Stopped at few shopping malls for lunch end up at Nandos.

Nando's is halal in Australia mostly, the chicken are 'properly slaughtered' according to Islam. Only some branch serve alcohol like the ones with most attraction (beach at Gold Coast).

Cant remember much of the buildings, but passed by shopping area or tourists area and shop alot :)

Evening at Brisbane is awesome, the blue sky glowing turns to dark. i only had with me an Ultra Wide Angle lens, if not the view of the city at the pic below is great . . .

Back at the apartment, ate Nando's again (tapau) and snapped few pics during sunset. Hoping the sky would clear up the night so i could try shooting the stars and milkyway but not that night....

Australia 001 - Airbus 330-300

Lama tak update blog , so many pictures to share, so many things to write, but so lazy to do so. 1 more year to go for degree studies and perhaps many more in study field, need to motivate myself olwez with study , passion and others things like blogging . So here i hope to re-start blogging with updates and stories from recent family trip vakasyun to Brisbane-Goldcoast Australia from 22-31 August 12. :D

10 day trip to Brisbane-Gold Coast, Australia

half day travel in car
nearly 4500 pics taken
only 150+ uploaded to facebook (Australia trip album)
bought many souvenirs for friends and family
not much for myself except pictures :)

Travel with MAS Airbus 330-300 took 7hours+ if im not mistaken, didnt slept at all during the flight. the entertainment system on the new Airbus is great, touch screen LCD, easy to navigate controller, controller no more on the arm handle instead just under the LCD. U can make calls thru after u swipe your credit card but does any1 do that?

The standard QWERTY keyboard with the game controller on the sides. The standard old boring board games and some new ones like miniature golf and stuff. i'd prefer to watch movies or tv series lah! Taruk lah Angry Birds ke

Many new movies displayed during the flight (August 2012) ; Avengers & Battleship. Tv series - comedy like 2 Broke Girls , Big Bang Theory & 'Mike and Molly'. good enuf for 7+ hours flight :D

The most useful add on to the system is the USB port beside the controller, good that u can plug in USB devices to play pictures on the LCD (not sure about videos thou). Another good thing is u can charge your device :)

Food is halal and nice , dapat aiskrim Magnum too :)

Trying out slider on Timelapse video, walaupun kena tolak manually dan click shutter and setup exposure manually the output is ohsem (to me lah!!).... Sungguhpun tak sehebat dan segempak Timelapse Photographer otai lain, tapi baby steps yeah. Nak carik resoources for DIY automated slider pulaks pasni :)

Bukit Tabur Revisited

Cuti 1/2 semester kembali lagi, 1st activity - panjat Bukit Tabur but as before separuh jalan dah pancit. So berhenti & snap photos :)

Good for friends of mine (4 orang) yang berjaya tawan Bukit Tabur & now dok hebahkan kejayaan mereka hahahaaaaaa. Tunggu lah suatu hari nnt bila aku dah fit sket and kuat stamina .... Seriusly letih gila & panas terik lagi la . Next time nak try naik sebelum subuh to snap sunrise view :)

I Love Film Photography : Blackbird Fly TLR v4

Some of the pictures from the Blackbird Fly TLR loaded with Kodak Gold 200 expired, took me 6 month to finish 1 roll. Probably because of the limitation of the camera itself, only suitable to be used outdoor. The fix aperture of f/7.1 or f/11.0 and fixed shutter value of 1/125s is very limiting its purpose, not like da old old TLRs...

The shot above ni the day i lost my iphone 3gs, while doing some timelapse video (http://youtu.be/ndEaLOVXRCA). The iPhone is inside the top pocket of the bag, and im standing to the left of it. Entah bila tak perasan kena cilok... Dem u pencurik/pencilok!!!

These few months asek berbelanja banyak sangat , sampai sapu abeh film camera oldskool Minoltas. Some of the film SLRs that could mount the Sony/Minolta A-mount AF lenses and the Rangefinders. Still testing the output of the film and some kuar memang hancur, overexpose kaw2.... probably kena hantar CLA dulu :(

Exploring Pantai Jeram

Bagi menghabiskan sisa cuti semester yg cuma 3 minggu, berjalan la jauh sikit sampai ke Pantai Jeram (berdekatan dengan Pantai Remis) sebab di area Selangor/Kuala Lumpur ni je lah salah satu dari pantai yang ada. Kepingin jugak nak pergi pantai tiap-tiap petang, tapi jauh.....

So selama cuti 3 minggu, berjaya sampai ke sini 3 kali dan tiap kali cuba shoot something different. Dari slow shutter , HDR dan timelapse walaupun gambar tak berapa menarik tapi sgt puas hati dapat mai. Lagi-lagi dapat follow sifu2 besar photographer berpengalaman shoot disinun.

Semester ni pulak timing kelas agak pact, mmg takdak can nak trip kesini. Next next semester kena susun jadual baik sikit la nampaknya....

Kata orang, kalau duduk dekat bandar-bandar memang idamkan hidup di kawasan luar bandar, and vice versa. Even ikan atas ni pon nak relax sometimes haha...
Harapnya next time sampai kesini dapat pakai UWA dengan Lee Big Stopper + GND filters :)

Cubaan HDR dengan mengambil multiple exposure dari EV (-2) to (+2) dan digabung di Photomatix. Rupanya kalau nak buat HDR takyah letak Gradual ND filter pada lens sbb nanti ada color cast, exposure tak balance dan kemungkinan output kurang sharp.....

Kuala Lumpur : A busy city

Kuala Lumpur, bandar yang belum lagi habis aku explore banyak tempat-tempat menarik yang tak dijangka ada view dan perspektif yang lawa. Macam gambar semua ni di-snap dari sebuah bangunan flat je, tapi view kalah kondo-kondo & banglo-banglo di KL. Dan harapnya sampai bila-bila boleh naik kesana nikmati view ni & some other spots....

Sebab nak mencuba timelapse, aku dah sampai sini 3 kali dan rasanya nak pegi setiap hari kalu boleh. sebabnya 'view' setiap hari lain, everything changes. Mood of the picture berubah bila berubah cuaca, suasana dan masa. Itu yang menarik bila buat timelapse, something yang you cannot show inside a still picture, something more...

And yes, some 'moment' is nice-r better dari yang lain, if cuaca elok + langit biru + transition to sunset nampak jelas for sure is awesome but thats just one of the days, not everyday! ( best situation vs worst case scenario )

Next spot in KL tapi versi sunrise walaupun haritu trip kesana tak berapa menarik. Tapi always ada nextime :)

Creating a timelapse has never been easy, but now with smartphones like iPhone there's many applications for it (im using is Timelapse Pro). With a tripod stand , u can create timelapse anywhere. A DSLR needs an intervalometer or timer remote control to automate the capturing, sequencing and setting the interval between photos.

Semester baru (walaupun lagi seminggu nak mid-term), dapat lah merasa seperti duduk kat penthouse. Tingkat 4 blok atas bukit dengan view panorama Mahallah Ali. Malamnya sejuk gedi, paginya cahaya matahari direct masuk bilik , so memang tabley tido. Bagusnya dapat bangun awal pepagi. Yang lecehnya walaupun cafeteria depan mata tapi malas bebonar nak turun naik 4 tingkat....

Terasa nak try buat timelapse + HDR tiap hari sampi grad... ntah berapa space HDD makan tuh ??? =X

Al-kisah di Madinah al-Munawwarah ketika awal Ramadhan al-Mubarak 1432H

#1 dikala fajar menyinsing memancari bumi Madinah al-Munawwarah

#2 dikala langit yang seharusnya kaler purple kelihatan kebiruan di kaca LCD

#3 dikala manusia tidur,

adolah sorang mamat ni dengan kameranya pusing2 Masjid Nabawi nih XD

#4 ada yang berteduh dibawah payungan dari terik mentari
Suhu dan cuaca terik tiap hari mencecah 50degrees celcius, tanpa hujan ,hanya dengan kipas blower air

#5 mencarik corak dan struktur yang abstrak, demi memenuhkan memorycard 8GB

#6 di ketika mana peluang kesana adakah kesampaian lagi

#7 ada yang berteduh dibalik bayangan, berteduh dari panas mentari yang membahang
(suhu standard tengah hari 45-50degrees celcius)

New firmware for Sony a33/a55 and NEX3/5

New firmware upgrade for owners of Sony Alpha a33, a55 , Sony Alpha NEX 3 and Nex 5 released by Sony which includes the new Picture Effects mode in all of them and a new enhanced manual focusing function in NEX series called 'Peeking Mode'. The 'Peeking mode' allows users to select color (red,white,yellow) and are shown in the live view LCD screen the Depth of Field area which are the point of focus (refer to a youtube link below). In addition, the orange Alpha logo appears when turning off the NEX and some other improvements.

The 'Peeking Mode' allows better manual focusing for NEX users with manual lenses and best of all is available during video recording. The Picture Effects mode is available for video recording but the effects aren't changeable during recording. Also the 'Picture Effects' mode limits the user on settings like aperture, shutter, ISO, DRO/HDR and metering. The method to overcome that is with manual lenses with own aperture ring to control the DoF.

For the Sony alpha a33/a55 users, the current D-RANGE button are now customize-able to few other functions such as the metering mode, creative style (profile) , picture effects, sweep panorama and flash exposure. But in my humble opinion (IMHO) , those functions are accessable from the 'Fn' button and the picture effects and sweep panorama are only access-able in their 'Dial-mode' , thus making the button quite useless and is an insignificant customized change. IMHO , the best function is still the DRO/Auto HDR+ mode remain there.

Apart from that the new update is awesome and saves time for editing and photoshopping for some users =)

Behind the scene of Wedding & Post-Wed photoshoot of Muhsin - Shima & Ina - Li. Sini awok nak story sikit pasal photoshoot itu . First time aku dan Syah tolong handle photoshoot post-wedding so masing-masing blur dan tataw camana nak pose kan pengantin. Pening dengan gaya ape nak buat terkeluar idea nak try wireless flash@strobe.

Then, jalan-jalan dekat bandar dengan pakai baju pengantin seriously akan attract pandangan. Tourist mahupun anak jati Melaka sendiri sanggup brenti kete nak tengok, ada siap mintak bergambar lagi dan wish 'congrats' .... dah macam celebrity @ Raja XD

Tengah-tengah hari terik jalan-jalan keliling Bandar Melaka memang panas tak terkata, dan dan jumpa satu pasang pengantin lagi tengah photoshoot jugak XD

Few professional@sifu comment gamba kitorang kat few forums amek tuh kata lighting terlalu harsh (direct flash), kena pakai diffuser ataw payung, distortion terlalu ketara (sebab guna Samyang 8mm Fisheye & UWA Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6) dan composition ntah pape. Thank you for the comments and criticism, kami budak baru blaja & hoping will improve.

Wedding photoshoot ini nampak saja senang, tengok Official Photographer (OP) selit sana sini amek gambo nampak cam mudah je. Tapi dah try sekali baru taw la susah mana nak handle. Dengan panas terik siang hari nya, orang kerumun pengantin macam mana nak menyelit, macam ne nak mintak pengantin pandang kamera, macam mana kalau ada photografer lain kat situ & mereka 'kacau' scene, nak carik angle yang lawa , nak guna direct flash ke diffuse ke bounce, battery cukup ke tak, lens ape yang perlu , gamba yang wajib ada macam gamba dengan family, gamba ketika akad, gamba ketika upacara batal wudu', scene yang tak wajib cover cam gambo member makan... perghhh banyak la lagi.....patutlah charge amek gambo kawin mahal.....

thank you pada pakcik ini walaupun tataw sape tah yang tolong settle kan queue amik gambo, susun pengantin, pose camana dan banyak lagi...karena dia lah senang sket koje kami hari tuh. Tapi bising & kecoh tak beragak...

Wedding photoshoot seriously not for everyone, especially not for me. Tapi kalau nak tolong-tolong member & family takdehal =)
Anyways, congratulations for Muhsin-Shima & Ina-Li and hope all of you a happy life together =)

Sharing some gambar dari Canon Prima BF90 + Kodak Elitechrome ISO100 , Smena 8m + Kodak Gold ISO200 dan Canon Prima Super 28N + Kodak Gold ISO200(expired 2004).

Dimulakan dengan Canon Prima BF90 dengan Kodak Elitechrome yang aku test amek gamba post wedding photoshoot of member aku Muhsin & Shima dan Li & Ina. Output color agak lain dari lain, tapi contrasty dan unique. Details tentang photoshoot on next post , location tengok saja dah boleh agak XD

Sebelum ni (post instagram v2) , aku ada jumpa Canon Prima 28N yang dah siap ada film dalamnye. Rupanya film tuh dari tahun 2004/2005 , still ada gambar dari trip family pegi ke 'Golden Triangle' , border antara Thailand, Burma (Myanmar) & Laos.

Dari film yang sama amik tahun ni. Karena film dah expired , output jadi grainy dan dark.

note : film Kodak Gold 200 dalam Blackbird Fly dah berbulan tak abis lagi 36exposure

Sekian lama tak update sejak balik dari Cameron Highlands, terasa pulak nak menulis sbb borink ayam kat umah dan beribu gambar nak share. Tapi kalau upload gambar kat blogspot @ facebook ni quality kureng sket, upload kat FlickR better tapi limit 100pics saje pastu gambar lelame hilang...

Terasa nak upgrade account FlickR pro tapi merasa diri ini NOOB ,
Terasa nak beli domain sendiri tapi yang free ni pon taktertulis
Terasa nak tukar/edit layout tapi nanti sume setting lari
Terasa nak pegi tour jalan2 seluruh dunia, tapi KL pon sesat lagi
Terasa terasa terasa....

Oleh itu, bersyukur dengan apa yang ada dan gunakannya dengan sebaiknya
