Many people ask me about the Golden Rules I mention for PCs and computing in general.

Basically, I’m very opinionated about technology. And I make no apology for that.

But at the same time, it’s important we don’t think about technology as being a means to an end. No. Technology is a tool – your PC is a tool. Your iPhone is a tool. Your MacBook is a tool.

Don’t make the mistake many make by confusing this simple fact. Too often, people get distracted by the technology itself and forget about the purpose behind why they purchased it!

Most of us by technology to solve some kind of problem, no matter how trivial. So my first Golden Rule is this: don’t buy technology for technology’s sake.

My second rule of thumb is around longevity and value. With new products being released every single month, it’s easy to spend your entire income just keeping up with the Jones’!

This is a huge trap. My second Golden Rule is: don’t buy technology just to impress people. It’s stupid at best and destructive at worst.

Which leads me to my third Golden Rule: get as much out of your technology as you can. This may mean skipping a generation or two before you upgrade. Make your technology investments go the distance – you’ll save money and avoid the dangerous always-upgrading trap!
