Once upon a time, a peddler was walking up and down the streets to sell her goods, chickens and guinea fowls.  She started hawking and walking around a well-inhabited area. She knew the neighborhood very well.  Everywhere she went, the itinerant merchant or street vendor shouted, "Beautiful Chickens and Guinea Fowls for Sale."  Only 200 gouds."  In those days, foodstuff, chickens and guinea fowls were not expensive. 

The chickens and guinea fowls peddler carried all of her goods on her head.  On her right side, she carried the guinea fowls on her head.  On the left side, she carried the chickens.  Under her left arms, she carried 4 more guinea fowls which she has a long history of selling quickly.  The merchant placed the chickens and guinea fowls in a large basket made of banana straws and ties.  Everybody knew Ms. Semafi as a reliable peddler of chickens and guinea fowls.  The chickens and guinea fowls itinerant merchant did not want to walk by the public market because there were other livestock sellers there.  Ms. Semafi was very proud of her commerce.  She entered this business by selling mangoes first.  She started saving her money.  After saving enough money, Ms. Semafi decided to start selling chickens and guinea fowls, which brought her more income.  The clients who did not know her name called her the chickens and guinea fowls peddler.  Anybody who heard it knew they were talking about Ms. Semafi.  From Kenskoff, Boutilier to downtown Petionville, Ms. Semafi had all kinds of clients, rich as well as poor clients.  In those days, there were no problems of insecurity in Haiti.  Ms. Semafi's chickens and guinea fowls business was going so well that on some occasions, she could rent a taptap to transport her goods to her customers and sale destination or downtown.

 If you are a child growing up in Haiti, you already know what major your parents want you to select or what they want you to study.  If you are a boy, they want them to become a doctor, a businessperson, a lawyer, an engineer or an architect.  Haitian parents wish their children choose those majors.  As 95 % of Haitian parents are poor, they must pray a lot.  They would like to see their dreams become a reality by faith.  The remaining 5 % of Haitian children have more chance to study what their parents want them to study.  Those parents are wealthy.  They can send their kids to study in foreign countries such as the United States, France, Canada etc. That means the majority of Haitian children do not have much of a choice.  They would like to find a scholarship.  If they are lucky, they may find an evangelical or catholic church that may look for a scholarship for them from their professional network.

Even before Haitian students take their official baccalaureate exams, they hope to further their studies.  However, they cannot find any financial means to pay those exorbitant fees (costs).  Those youngmen and young women's parents work their land that does not provide good yields.  On many occasions, this lack of good yields is due to the lack of rain.  Drought is the cause of many farmers who cannot work.  Even when they plant, inundation, bad weather, and hurricane destroy their fields and livestock that could help their children.

Americans celebrate with hotdogs, games, and races.  They go to beaches.  They go to lakes.  They travel to see family members in other cities.  They are running up and down every where.  They buy a lot fireworks to celebrate this day.  There are Americans who sit around to chat, eat, tell jokes and laugh with their friends. Meals, games, alcohol, beer gather people together.  However, they are sometimes the causes of headaches and much pain.  Whatever weapons – from knives to firearms such as guns, revolver, machine guns, AR15 etc – should not go along with alcohol and narcotic drugs.  There are Americans who must walk around in the middle of the hot humid or dry heat.  The sun is unforgiving to everybody.  They are working because they have to work if they are doctors, taxi drivers such as Uber and Lyft drivers.

 When some Americans finish celebrating, they get drunk, inebriated, intoxicated.  They start rolling on the ground and causing damage in the neighborhood.  Neighbors call the police who come to restore order amidst the chaos.  The police officers even arrest some drunk troublemakers and drug dealers for selling opioids such as Duragesic or Fentanyl, crack, cocaine, heroin, methadone, Roxicodone or oxycodone etc. Some of the revelers call Uber or Lyft so they can go to another party.  They continue to drink more alcohol, wiskey, and any other alcoholic beverages they can find.  They are high on all kinds of drugs. 

Before the end of the day, ambulance drivers cannot celebrate because they must be dispatched to pick up the overdosed revelers.  They take them to the hospital so doctors and nurses can save their lives.  The parents of those revelers do not know where their sons and daughters are.  The children do not stay in touch with their parents.  These strong narcotic drugs known as opioids change their growing brain. 

Needless to say that kids who are exposed to them at a young age will suffer long-term consequences.  They turn young men and women into zombies running everywhere and looking for the next high.  They cannot live with them.  They have to stay on a constant high.  They may even turn to crimes to get the drug they are after for a short time.  Addiction is a form of compulsive shopping.  The drug addicts want their joint now.  If they manage to hold a job, they work only to be able to purchase more opioids.  It's a hidden epidemic that is destroying the American family.  Oftentimes, all the members of a family are suffering from this hidden epidemic one form or another.

4th of July, the last member of the family cannot stay in the house.  There is too much noise in the neighborhood.  The dogs start barking and running all around the yard until they jump over the fence.  If their owners are not present, they do not have any chance of staying in the yard.  They encountered other neighborhood dogs tormented by the fireworks all day long.  They form a huge pack of dogs running up and down.  As soon as adults and children see them, they get so scared.  They run back to hide in their home or anywhere they can find shelter. Dogs of all breed, big as well as small dogs, are barking.  They pretend to be mad and enraged.  People have reason to be afraid or run away in a different direction.  Their children and they are the ones who make these dogs' lives miserable on 4th of July.  This pack of dogs is like this mass of refugees who are seeking refuge in any place free of noise, exploding weapons and gunshots.  There are dogs that are looking for their best friends, their loyal mates.  There are dogs that are looking for their guardians' sons and daughters who left home many years, months, or weeks ago. Opioids, marijuana, narcotic drugs and alcohol took over these young men and women's mind, brain, and life.  They're already gone.  Gone far away.

Some Haitian migrants left Haiti by walking, catching a tap tab or taxi, and traveling by bus to DR where they caught a flight to Panama.  From Panama, they traveled to Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brasil.  Some of them were granted a work permit to work in Brasil.  That was when Brasil's economy was great.  Brasil did not have the current political upheaval.  President Dilma Rousseff and Zika were not making headlines yet. People were talking about getting ready for the 2016 Olympic games.  Once the economy started slowing down, Haitian migrants lost their job.  They were ready to travel again through Central America and Mexico.  This time, they were heading back to Tijuana at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the largest land border between Mexico, Tijuana and San Diego. 

Staff at La Casa de Migrante in Tijuana said they have opened the door and the floor so migrants can have a space to stay and sleep. 

This series of podcast lessons will help everyone, social workers, authorities, church directors and pastors, and local officials. 

Kachiman – la cherimoya/chirimoya (Spanish) – Sugar Apple or Sweetsop in Jamaica, Matomoko in Kenya, Sweet apple in Ghana, foreign lychee in Hong Kong, fruta pinha, condessa, ata, anona in Brazil and Angola, Matopetope in Tanzania (also known as custard apple in India and Australia and referred to as Annona reticulata).  In Hispanic America, it's known as anón, anón de azucar, cachiman, fruta do conde, saramuyo, granadilla (little grenade).  Custard apple is an excellent source of energy. It helps to fight exhaustion and eliminates muscle weakness.  Por su bajo aporte en sodio, riqueza en potasio y poca grasa se aconseja a aquellas personas que sufren de hipertensión arterial o alteraciones cardiacas o de vasos sanguíneos. De la misma forma, también reduce los niveles de colesterol. 

Kowosòl – Guanábana (Spanish) – Soursop (Graviola – Brazilian Portuguese; Corossol – French; Anona reticulata – European Portuguese; bullocks' heart, bulls' heart, cœur de boeuf – Democratic Republic of Congo; Brazilian Pawpaw – Filipino). Some people state it is used for cancer treatment.  However, there is no credible scientific evidence showing that Anona muricata or Graviola is a cancer cure according to the Federal Trade Commission in the US.

Kayimit – Cainito / caimito / estrella – Star apple in Jamaica or milk fruit (Pomme de lait in French), known as bobi wata or breast Milk fruit in Sierra Leone; Odara in Nigeria.  Infusion of the leaves has been used against diabetes (tansyon) and rheumatism.  It is a delicious fruit that can serve as dessert.  The Cainito leaves have two colors, green and gold.  They refer to people with two faces as hypocrites, two-faced people.  Well-known aphrodisiac!

Mirliton – Chayote – Chayote.  It may help prevent acne, may help guard against constipation, may help energize the body, may help promote thyroid health, promote heart health

"When rescuers and the authorities were finally able to enter the club, they witnessed a scene of desperation and complete chaos as more and more bodies were discovered in the restrooms. Brazil’s Globo opined that the revelers were looking for a way out. There were bodies that went all the way to the back of the club. The fire turned the nightclub into a deathtrap for all of these concertgoers. Many died of asphyxiation as toxic gases and smoke overwhelmed the trapped partygoers.

One thing is clear. Improvised pyrotechnic performances inside nightclubs should be banned. That’s the common thread between all those tragedies and losses of human lives. Pyrotechnics display has no place inside a nightclub. Concerts organized en plein air are other things.

President Dilma Roussef wants to know what went wrong and how to prevent such future tragedies. She is giving the full support of the Federal government. She spent a major part of her life in Rio Grande do Sul, the southern part of Brazil. Brazilian officials have already started to investigate the causes of that deadly fire. They want to know whether the fire sprinklers were working. They want to know whether the security guards truly impeded the public’s exit in case of emergency. According to Globo, the nightclub’s permit verifying health and safety standards was expired months ago. Authorities will also have to review how they go about the enforcement of safety standards in the whole country. As the world’s eyes are on Brazil from now on due to the upcoming world cup and Olympic games, they may have to take a deeper look at those standards and practices again. The world’s best athletes will be in most Brazilian buildings, stadiums, and hotels.

"Sixto Diaz Rodriguez’s Philosophy: Rodriguez’s eBook Guide to Happiness" is about the man, the legend, and the genius who was not aware of his Rock and Roll fame in other parts of the world. It is about Jesus Rodriguez. Bootleggers managed to take copies to South Africa and Australia where Rodriguez has had a huge following. He did not know about his popularity on those shores. He was busy demolishing and remodeling homes in the United States to make a living. Music was not paying his bills. The release of this movie/documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" was going to change things. As they say, the rest is just history.

In this novella, the authors show Bouki's desperation and push factors contributing to his agreement with a sleek, sophisticated local criminal and people smuggler / trafficker known as 'Captain Katastwòf Natirèl.' Bouki was deep in debts because he wanted to maintain a lifestyle he could not afford on the meager catches of a fisherman. Caught and deported several times by U.S. Border and Coast Guard, Captain Katastwòf Natirèl (Captain Natural Catastrophe) was on a black list. Bouki thought he was smart enough to pull this trip on his own. He refused to be known as the butt of his brother's jokes, a simpleton, a fool. He did not want Malis, his intellectual brother, to know about the details of that trip. All the while, Malis never hesitated to put him down and make him realize that he needed his expertise, language skills, and critical thinking.

Charles J. Desmangles and Kevin Levin interweave elements of the Haitian culture in this remarkable Haitian Creole, Spanish, English novella. Things must have been really harsh in Haiti if these two famous characters of the Haitian folklore finally decide to leave the country on a perilous raft to cross illegally to the U.S. shores. When faced with an upcoming storm, Captain Katastwòf Natirèl led his crew to Santiago, Cuba to seek temporary refuge. He forced everybody to learn Spanish in order to pass for Cuban refugees. Will Booki, Malis and Captain Katastwòf Natirèl make it to the dry grounds of Florida?

This story is set against the backdrop of Haiti's devastated agriculture, political upheavals, insecurity, presence of UN troops or Minustah, series of natural disasters such as hurricanes and 2010 earthquake, barren lands and tree-less mountaintops causing widspread floodings, destroyed ecology, infrastructures and educational institutions with a local population that depends more and more on imported goods and used clothes euphemistically known as 'pèpè.'

In this novella, the authors also implicate and relate the complicity of the catholic church whose priest, Father Francois, refuses to use Haitian Creole and French in his mass in his dogged efforts to cater to a dwindling but rich and powerful group of Latin language enthusiasts, les Bourgeois Commercants Mulattres (native Haitians of Syrian, Lebanese and.. descent). He did not heed Professor Malis' advice to start leading mass in Creole just like the Voodoo priests and protestant churches do all over the country with great success. What's worse is that Father Francois never said a word or raisee his stubby pinky finger against the clandestine smuggling and chaperoning of Haitian children who took these rickety boats to get reunited with their parents in Miami. Sister Marie Lafontant made her money chaperoning children and paid the priest under the table without counting her generous tithes to the church.

"Bouki and Malis Turned Boat People - Bouki ak Malis Pran Kanntè" is a book that will make you laugh and cry in the same sentence or paragraph. This book should be a required reading for anybody who wants to understand Haiti and the 'Boat People' phenomenon. Definitely, it should be required reading for any NGO, tourist, international workers in Haiti. It should be a required reading for any sociology students. This novella is edited by Prof. Joseph J. “They said that I am supposed to pass the shark test too,” Bouki said to Malis.

“What are you talking about?” Malis asked.

“I was told that it is a test developed by the American authorities to separate Cubans from Haitians. They say that sharks like Haitians’ blood and flesh. They eat Haitian migrants whose boats capsize in high seas between Haiti and Bahamas. “

“Come on, Bouki, think straight. Respect yourself. It looks like you are losing your consciousness, you are coming in and out of consciousness. It appears that the waves of the sea and the crossing made you lose your mind. Americans are not like that! Where can they find these sharks?”

“Malis, I am not crazy. You always think I am crazy!”

“Crazy people hold this kind of talk!”

“I am a fisherman, but I am afraid of sharks. Their teeth are like saws.”

“Hello Bouki, you are no longer on the ocean now. You are on firm U.S. soil!”

Professor Orosco and Malis continued to teach Spanish lessons. Malis had a lot of problems teaching the illiterate group. They were supposed to memorize a lot of lessons. It was the only way to teach them.

“¿Que edad tiene ud.? – Ki laj ou genyen?” (“How old are you?”) Malis taught the group. He asked them to repeat after him.

“Tengo 34 años de edad. – M gen 34 an.” (I am 34 years old.)

“¿Cúantos niños tiene ud.? – Konbyen timoun ou genyen?” (“How many children do you have?”)

“¿Es casado/a?” – Eske ou marye?” (“Are you married?”

The indigenous inhabitants of Haiti or Bohio were consequently decimated by hard labor, rapes, and diseases! By the end of 1500s, the news about Mexico's gold mines were more sensationalistic. The Spaniards packed up and left for Mexico. They did not have the time or the equipment to turn your innards to make you cough up your last treasures. Mother Haiti, you wanted to reward future generations who would watch over you despite all the drama and sufferings your land has gone through.

Hairless (treeless), your tall mountains kept deep secrets of beauty that men and women from all over the world covet. Far too many centuries, you have been made fun of because of your apparent poverty. Far too many years have found you begging the international community in order to feed your children forced to pile up in the capital, rested on major fault lines. The fatal quake only took 5 seconds to change things. Tectonic plates were moving and exposing your true and precious beauty!

May a new dawn arise for the men and women whose cries of hunger, famine, and fights for justice and dignity are heard from the plains of Artibonite, the valleys and coastal ranges to the peaks of the northern mountains whence Henri Christophe, Jean Jacques Dessalines, Francois, Biassou climbed down. These mountains that sheltered the runaways fed not only the remaining indigenous inhabitants of the island but also the new black gold from Africa. European powerhouses were going to carve Hispanola. French would fight Spaniards who would fight English colonists. How long will it take for your children spread all over the world to get back to your bosoms? How long will it take for them to want to stay home, work hard to see the fruits of their hard labor and take care of your grandchildren?

May the prophecies come true! On wings of eagles (malfini), they will be brought back to participate in the development of your once fertile land! Koukou wè lwen, men li pa wè dèyè tèt li – An owl can see very far, but it cannot see behind its head ( this saying preaches humility)

Tete pa janm two lou pou mèt yo – Breasts are never too heavy for their owners (this saying is about experience)

** Bay kou bliye, pote mak sonje – He who inflicts the blows forgets, but he who carries the scars never forgets. (This is used mostly when somebody will seek revenge. You may have gotten away with the mistreatment of somebody for a long time, but some day, he or she will fight back and give you a fatal blow. This is often used against wife beaters or girlfriend beaters or bullies or dictatorial regimes or authorities who mistreat the people)

*** Bouch granmoun santi, men pawòl ki sot nan bouch li bay sajès – A grownup’s mouth may smell, but the words that come from his mouth are pure wisdom (This saying exists to encourage young men and women to listen to adults’ instructions)

*** Ti nèg sa-a anmèdan anpil – Li toujou ap chache-m kont – This young man is a bully. He always looks forward to picking a fight with me.
