iPad too much for some campus wireless network in the US

Even though the Apple iPad has received much praise for its design and user interface, there are many who aren’t so enamored with the device. That includes a couple American universities that are having problems with the iPad on their networks.

Cornell University, George Washington University, and Princeton University have all prevented users of the iPad to log into their campus’ wireless networks, fearing a complete breakdown of an already-established wireless network.

The iPad causes DHCP client malfunctions, which basically means the tablet causes interference for other devices using the school’s wireless network. It uses DHCP to obtain a lease, renews the lease zero or more times, but then continues using the IP address without renewing the lease. The iPad allows the DHCP lease to expire, but it continues using the IP address after allowing the lease to expire.

Finally solved the GoogleUpdateInstaller popping up every now and then

The solution to this is simple:

Open Finder then highlight your HDD then Library then Google then Google Update Helper then there’s this application inside. Run that and then Uninstall.

That’s it.

How to unzip a zip file that comes with z01, z02, in a Mac

I just downloaded 3 files with the following extensions:

.zip
.z01
.z02

By the way, my OS is Snow Leopard and I’ve tried using Split and Concat, ZipIt, and Archive Utility. ZipIt had an out of memory error while the others just don’t work. Here’s the solution, download the latest stuffit expander which is called Stuffit Expander 2010. Problem solved.

WordPress 2.6.3 Released

Wordpress just released version 2.6.3 of their blogging platform.

It fixes a vulnerability in the Snoopy library, used to fetch the feeds shown in the Dashboard. It is considered to be a low risk vulnerability though. Nevertheless you can download the latest version of WordPress from http://wordpress.org/download/.

How to disable right-click, copy and paste on your Blog or Website

Ok maybe you have experienced writing your own original entry only to find out that other sites just copied and pasted it without your permission or even a link back to your entry.

Here’s how to disable right-click, copy and paste on your site.

Insert this code anywhere after the and before the tags of your site’s source.

You can try it and see if it works.

Open new windows in Tabs in Safari

Most of the time when you click on a link while using Safari, it opens a new window instead of a tab.

So here’s a trick to make Safari behave like Firefox. Open Terminal, (/Applications/Utilities/) or use spotlight and type in terminal and copy paste the following command:

defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true

then Enter

You then have to restart Safari for it to work. All clicked links will now open in a new tab. If you want to revert to the default behavior of Safari just repeat the steps but replace “true” with “false.”

How to revert or downgrade your iPod Touch firmware (Mac)

Ok I just tested this procedure and I was able to revert or downgrade my iPod Touch firmware/software version from 2.1 to 2.0.2.

As of this posting, 2.1 is the latest version of the iPod Touch firmware.

First step is to open iTunes and then connect your iPod Touch to your Mac.

Your iPod Touch will now appear in iTunes.

Then make sure that your iPod Touch is unlocked meaning you can press the buttons and go to the each applications.

Press the Home button and hold and then press the Power button (located at the top of the unit) and hold.

While still holding both buttons, look at iTunes and once your iPod disappers from the sidebar, release the power button but remain holding the home button. Then your iPod will reappear on the sidebar, immediately release the home button.

You will see this notice

iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.

Now you’re ready to downgrade. Click on option and click on restore (option+restore), finder will open and you will have to choose which firmware to install.

The firmwares are located at

~user/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates

Note: ~user is the name of the your home folder

The file that we’re looking for has an extension of ipsw (*.ipsw)

If you’re like me who wanted to revert to 2.0.2, I chose

iPod1,1_2.0.2_5C1_Restore.ipsw

and then open.

That’s it. Follow the rest of the steps given by iTunes and you have successfully reverted/downgraded your firmware.

Disable and Enable backup of iPhone or iPod Touch in iTunes (Mac)

Even after updating to the latest software (2.1), iPod Touch still takes a long time to backup.

There is a free software that you can download that can disable and enable backup by just a click of a button. It’s called Backup Disabler by TwelvePin.

It’s described by the developer as:

Purchased a FREE single of the week on iTunes and got 34 paid singles instead

Ok maybe this is a bug because of what’s going on now with the iTunes update plus the software update for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Ok so I went on downloading the FREE single of the week, which is currently the song “The Show” by an artist called Lenka but my iTunes is currently downloading as I’m typing this 34 paid singles which are 99 cents apiece. I even tried cancelling and purchasing again but it’s still downloading the 34 singles and the song that I’m supposed to be downloading is no where to be found. Here are the 34 songs:

WordPress 2.6.2 Released

The WordPress Team has just release WordPress version 2.6.2.

This is a security release especially for those who have open registration on their blogs. The attack is complex and is dependent on open registration being turned on in your blog but can be executed in theory and turns out to be more of an annoyance than an actual exploit.
