It’s with great pleasure that we announce the first details surrounding our 2012 gala event.

For the past 18 months we have been in and out of talks with the Delta Halifax. Attempts in 2011 to bring the Haliwards to the Delta had been unsuccessful but we are excited to say that for 2012 we have struck a deal to secure a Delta bound ceremony.

On October 18th at 7PM we will celebrate 10 hand picked award winners. The award presentations will be supported by local entertainment, a dessert buffet and a cash bar.

Our director said earlier today:

”I’m so pleased that we were finally able to come to an agreement that would lead to us holding an event at the Delta Halifax. The Bluenose Ballroom has so much to offer and I’m very confident that this year we will see a real level of class added to the festivities.”

Further details including ticket prices will be announced in June.

Season’s Greetings from the Haliwards!

As we approach the festive season we would like to make you aware of a change in our 2012 schedule. Since the birth of the Haliwards it has been customary for us to close nominations as the New Year passed and hold our ceremony in the spring —but for 2012 we are making some changes.

In an email earlier today to the proposed board of the 2012 project our Director, Alex Maine said that he had to make some changes due to peoples schedules and some of his own personal commitments.

As some of you know I have been rather preoccupied with another position recently and that has taken up most of my time. That has set the Haliwards back a little but not to a point that would require a full rewrite of the schedule. The “thing” that did that was my wedding. I’m getting married in the spring and for once I’ve decided to put myself first and concentrate on that. Once the wedding has past I will return to the Haliwards and aim to prepare a ceremony for the Fall with the support of a new board, new chair and overseas director.

In the meantime our Director has made the decision to leave nominations open until further notice. We want to assure people that this is nothing more than a reschedule and that the Haliwards has not been axed. The project has grown rapidly in size and 2012 is set to be a head turning year for the Haliwards and it’s team.

If you have any questions or comments please email them to us pr@haliwards.com

Who can I nominate?
Who is your unsung hero or heroine? Who do you think is so inspiring they deserve to be recognized by the Haliwards? We are looking to find the stars of HRM – they can be any age, from any walk of life and from any part of the Halifax Regional Municipality, but, they must be extraordinary. Nominations are not limited to individuals. You can nominate groups, organisations and businesses. It doesn’t even have to be a human being.. I’m not joking —did you not watch Lassie as a kid?!

;

How do I make a nomination?
Making a nomination is extremely simple. Just fill out the form on our website. Try to give as much information as you can to help us with our decision. If we feel we don’t have enough information to go on, we will contact you and request more information. Once you hit the submit button we have it safe in our database!

;

Can I make an anonymous nomination?
Yes and no. When you make a nomination we need to know your name in order to prevent self-nominations. If, however, you don’t wish the person to know that you nominated them, we will respect that. These awards will indicate an anonymous nomination. Past experience is that some people are reluctant to accept anonymous awards, so only keep it a secret if it’s absolutely necessary.

;

What happens with my nomination?
Firstly the nomination will arrive in our database. It will stay there until nominations close. Nominations will then be checked for authenticity. Once we have removed the nominations that are fake and lacking on information we pass the remaining on to our board of local volunteers. The board will discuss each nomination individually. The nominations that stand out the most will be our award winners for 2012. The whole process can take months.

;

Who sits on the board?
The board is made up of local volunteers that were handpicked for their skills. Some have worked on the Haliwards before, some are completely new, some are past award winners —but they have one thing in common. They are passionate about their community.

;

How long do I have to nominate?
Nominations are open until June 22nd. It doesn’t matter if you send your nomination in tomorrow or 3 months from now, we treat them all the same.

;

Will you tell me if my nomination is successful?
Yes, if it’s successful we will notify you. Sadly due to the overwhelming numbers of nominations we receive we cannot contact those who were unsuccessful.

;

How will the awards be presented?
The awards will be presented in a finally tuned awards ceremony in late 2012. It will be an evening to remember. A night to give thanks to a select group or locals for the extraordinary things they have achieved. Mix that in with local entertainment and some refreshments and you got yourself a Haliwards Ceremony!

It’s that time again! The Haliwards returns for its third season. Last week our Director, Alex Maine sent out an email to prospective board members confirming there would be a 2012 Haliwards project.

I haven’t spoken to many of you in months now and for that please accept my apologies. It’s been a manic summer and I have only just about found my feet. I’m contacting you because in the very near future I’ll be starting work on the Haliwards 2012. I’ve been working on the Haliwards for almost 3 years now and so far it has been fairly successful. 2012 is is set to be our highest budget production.

Once again we are looking for HRM to nominate their nearest and dearest, the individuals and groups that make our world spin. As before our awards will not be restrained by categories but purely restrained by how far your imagination can go.

Nominations will open on October 1st and will remain open until the end of the year.

Haliwards, the community based project that recognizes local groups and individuals who make a positive impact on Halifax Regional Municipality, concluded its second annual ceremony on Saturday evening. With all award winners in proud attendance, the ceremony was a great success.

Heather Shay and Alex Maine cohesively hosted the ceremony. Cassie Ellis-Browne was the guest coordinator, warmly welcoming the award recipients and guests.

“The ceremony was moving and memorable. Again, we said thank you to some of the outstanding and extraordinary people in HRM,” Says Maine. I had a wonderful evening and beyond the ceremony I am deeply touched by the feedback of congratulations and appreciation that I have been receiving.”

The vibrant atmosphere of the awards was accented by the musical entertainment provided by Kristina Trites, Chloe Jones and the Doucet Sisters. The audience was captivated during each performance.

“My experience hosting the awards was very exciting,” says Shay. “It was an honour to present awards to the very deserving recipients.”

Haliwards was a great experience for all who attended. The night was filled with many laughs and even a few tears, as the award winners showed the audience why they were receiving a Haliward.

However, don’t be down if you missed the ceremony. It was recorded in high definition and the DVD, along with photos from the ceremony will be available for order online – www.haliwards.com/dvd.

Established in 2009, Haliwards is a community awards project based in the Halifax Regional Municipality that recognizes “everyday” individuals and groups who strive to make their community just a little bit better.

Haliwards, the community based project that recognizes local groups and individuals who make a positive impact on Halifax Regional Municipality, recently announced Heather Shay as the host of this year’s awards ceremony. However, a retraction is in order — The Haliwards Advisory Board is thrilled to announce that Alex Maine, Project Director, has just landed at Halifax International Airport and has issued a statement saying he intends to cohost the ceremony.

“The Haliwards is reaching a critical stage and as we finish up our 2011 project we begin to look towards the Haliwards in 2012”, says Maine. “I believe the Haliwards are too important to miss and that is why only a matter of minutes ago I landed at Halifax Stanfield International Airport with every intention on co-hosting the 2011 awards.”

It was previously announced that due to Maine’s hectic schedule of work on projects in the UK he was reluctant to commit to attending the awards. After planning the awards and putting in a vast amount of effort in, Maine knew he had to be here in Halifax for the award ceremony.

“It’s an honour to be co-hosting the Haliwards with Alex”, says Shay. “The board is excited to have Alex in attendance, and to have him here to see the outcome of the work he put into this extraordinary event. It will make the awards a better experience overall, having the person who worked so hard to make it all possible in attendance and as a co-host. “

Maine’s arrival to Halifax was kept secret by the board. It was a hard secret to keep, as many members almost slipped up and leaked the exciting news. However, they stood by Maine’s side, knowing how passionate he was about surprising the audience of the Haliwards.

Maine points to the sponsors and recipients for his reasons in attending the ceremony; though openly admits that he had thought about attending the ceremony and had made arrangements for the possibility of attendance.

“Everyone involved in Haliwards has been telling me for months that I had to be here,” says Maine after he just arrived in the city after a long flight from England. “Award winners, along with our partners and sponsors have been telling me what a shame it is that I was unable to attend the ceremony. Their kind words have twisted my arm to be here. It’s no secret that, in fact, I booked my ticket several months in advance, but only as a backup plan on the off chance I was able to attend the awards. This would have marked the first project I had directed and not attended.”

The Haliwards 2011 Ceremony is taking place at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic on April 2nd. The ceremony has limited seating. Details can be found by visiting http://haliwards.com/buy

Haliwards, the community based project recognizing local groups and individuals who make an impact on HRM, has established the musical lineup for the ceremony, taking place on April 2, 2011. The lineup includes Kristina Trites, Renee Doucet and Chloe Jones.

Trites’ well received performance at the 2010 Haliwards sparked a return invite for this, the second year of the awards. Born in Saint John, NB, Kristina Trites grew up on the outskirts of Halifax and offers a unique sound blending pop with acoustic folk.

The first fiddler to perform at Haliwards, Renee Doucet is a Nova Scotia native, dedicating herself to fiddling for the past 11 years. Taking a special interest in traditional Celtic music, Doucet currently performs with her sisters in the fiddle, mandolin and piano trio, The Doucet Sisters.

Chloe Jones is a local singer with a newly released EP, “Old Palace.” Jones’ unique voice and pop/alt style will delight the audience. Jones has recently played the Seahorse Tavern and The Company House to great reviews.

“We are excited to introduce the talent of Chloe and The Doucet Sisters to guests of the Haliwards, but also to announce the return of audience favourite and newlywed Kristina Trites,” says Alex Maine, Haliwards Director. “These performers will be a great asset to what we have planned for this year’s award ceremony.”

Established in 2009, Haliwards is a community awards project based in the Halifax Regional Municipality that recognizes “everyday” individuals and groups who strive to make their community just a little bit better.

Haliwards, the community based project that recognizes local groups and individuals who make a positive impact on Halifax Regional Municipality, announces Heather Shay as the host of this year’s awards ceremony. The awards will be presented April 2, 2011 at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

Shay, chair of the 2011 Haliwards Advisory Committee, along with Haliwards director Alex Maine, is excited to be spearheading this worthwhile initiative for a second year.

“I am very pleased that Heather has agreed to host our 2011 ceremony in my absence,” says Maine. “Heather presented several awards in our inaugural year in Halifax and I know she is right for the job. I am confident that she will succeed expectations thanks to her own personal abilities and the strong and able support of the Haliwards team.”

The 2010 Haliwards were a great success and nothing less is expected for the 2011 ceremony in which eight local award winners will be recognized.

“It’s a great honour for me to host the 2011 ceremony in the absence of our Director, Alex Maine,” says Shay. “We have a unique set of handpicked winners and I’m looking forward to presenting the awards at the ceremony.”

Tickets to Haliwards are extremely limited and sold out 30 days prior to the event last year. Don’t be let down. Purchase your tickets now at http://haliwards.eventbrite.com

Established in 2010, Haliwards is a community awards project based in the Halifax Regional Municipality that recognizes “everyday” individuals and groups who strive to make their community just a little bit better.

We take great pride in our awards project so naturally we take great pride in our award designs. In the inaugural year of the Haliwards we introduced “Clara”. Clara was the name of our 2010 award and we presented 7 of them at our award ceremony. This year we wanted to take what we had learnt from Clara and bring it forward to match our modern day theme. We said goodbye to the white and the commonly used landmarks of HRM and designed something that was tasteful yet relevant. We didn’t totally let go of Canada in this design. There is still an unmistakable maple leaf… seriously, how could we not? Our new design is 20% smaller in size than Clara. It’s also free standing as its supported by a metal rod that can be fastened to the bottom of the accolade. No wall mounting this time.

The most interesting fact about our new design is where its being produced. After careful consideration we have opted to have the awards manufactured in London, England. They will be flown in especially for the ceremony. These awards are being produced by the same company that designed “Mark”. Mark was our 2009 award at The Pride of Central Somerset. Lots of names eh? Keep up!

So now the question you’re asking yourself… What did we call this award? We called it Marie.
