Happy Celtic New Year Again! Today November 7th 2014 is the actual astronomical date of Samhain/Halloween. November 1st is called the traditional date, fixed in the calendar. Our ancient ancestors used astronomical observations to determine dates of annual festivals. While today marks the precise moment when the cross quarter event occurs, this degree of accuracy was/is not present in the ancient monuments which are astronomically aligned. Events such as the lighting of chambers with the sunshine of sunrise usually persist over a period of about 5 days. The solstices and equinoxes do not occur at the same time every year due to the elliptical orbit of the earth around the sun, our present calendar and other factors. This is the actual astronomical cross quarter day which marks the point in the year, half way between the Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice and for our Celtic ancestors this date marks the start of winter. We all know that the Earth takes about 365.25 days to orbit the sun. Thus, every four years the quarter days add up to one whole day and we have a leap year. For the same reason the precise time of the equinoxes and solstices are not the same each year and generally will occur about 6 hours later each year, with a jump of a day (backwards) on leap years. In fact it is only after a complete leap-year cycle of four centuries that these dates will be repeated. If we look at the 20th century, the times of the vernal equinoxes have ranged between the latest dates - March 21st at 19:00 and September 24th at 06:00 (in 1903) - to the earliest dates - March 20th at 08:00 and September 22nd at 17:00 (in 2000). A quick look at tables showing sunrise and sunset times on successive days in March and September will show that the dates do not coincide precisely with the times of equal day and night length. There is another factor to be considered which is that the orbit of the Earth around the Sun is an ellipse and not a circle and Kepler's Law states that the Earth moves fastest when it is closest to the Sun (approximately 3rd January each year) and slowest when it is furthest away (approximately 4th July). This 'unequal motion' causes variations in the length of the solar day and in the times of sunrise and sunset. The combined effects mean that the Sun does not cross the meridian (when it is highest in the sky) at precisely local noon each day. The difference between clock-defined noon and the time when the Sun is on the meridian is called the Equation of Time and represents the correction which must be applied to the time given by a sundial to make it agree with clock time. This correction can be as much as 16 minutes in either direction. Just to confuse you more the actual calendar date of Samhain/Halloween is November 11th. This was due to the reform of the Julian calendar under Pope Gregory in 1582* (hence the Gregorian calendar which we use today) and ten days were annulled or disappeared down a black hole. October 5, 1582 became October 15. However, the old cross-quarter days kept their old dates, so Samhain, which was celebrated on the night of October 31, is still celebrated on that date, despite the fact that the actual revised date would be on November 11. Unlike modern Halloween the festival of Samhain started on the night of November 10/11 and ran for 5 days, perhaps coinciding with the period of time monumental chambers are lit with sunlight. This is reflected in the beliefs that Samhain was a time when spirits of the dead returned to this world. It was a period when the veil was open between this world and the next and continued until November 16, which is referred to as Gate Closing. It coincides with what is also known as Hecate Night and also when the Leonid meteor shower begins. As the name "cross quarter days" implies there are four in a calendar year. These days are when the most important festivals of the ancient Irish occur and are known as Samhain, Imbolc, Bealtaine and Lughnasadh. Each festival marks the start of a season, winter, spring, summer and autumn. Knowledge of the seasons was important for survival in northern climes as late planting could be disastrous in a short growing season. Thus equinoxes were of lesser importance. (Samhain, Bealtaine and Lughnasadh are still the names in Irish of November, May and August, respectively.) *Note: the Gregorian calendar did not come into effect in Ireland until 1st January 1752 because protestant England resisted using a Catholic calendar! Image: Samhain sunrise at Carrowkeel, located in the Bricklieve Mountains in Co. Sligo. It is a complex of Neolithic passage tombs consisting of 14 passage cairns identified with letters. At the monument known as Cairn L, the sun illuminates this chamber on the mornings of Samhain and Imbolc. Tests using Carbon 14 dating places the tombs at between 5400 and 5100 years old (3400 to 3100 BC), so that they predate the Pyramids on Egypt's Giza plateau by 500–800 years.]]>
