One of our favorite people will be at Halls Plaza tomorrow (Friday, May 18, 2012) for a personal appearance and trunk show! Dallas-based jewelry designer Amanda Sterett will be here, presenting a trunk show of her amazing jewelry. Stop in between 11am and 4pm to meet Amanda and to check out her beautiful handmade pieces.

We love Amanda’s jewelry because it is versatile and wearable – her pieces are just as much at home with great denim as they are with a fabulous dress. While styles may range from dainty and ephemeral to bold and chunky, the quality and thoughtfulness of the jewelry designs are consistent. We LOVE Amanda Sterett jewelry (and Halls shoppers do too, judging by the number of pieces we sell year after year!).

Men’s Trend Alert! We asked Curtis from Men’s Downstairs at Halls Plaza for his style pick – and he showed us these amazing wood accessories.

Curtis is showing off a WeWOOD watch in the beige / brown dual tone style ($120). It is feather-light and fabulous. He is also wearing sunglasses from Waiting for the Sun, made in France and also made out of wood. Curtis is showing a style in Bamboo ($220).

WeWOOD partners with American Forests to plant one tree for every WeWOOD purchased. Most of the trees are planted in ecosystem restoration projects called Global ReLeaf Forests. Many of these areas have been damaged by natural or human causes. These trees help clean the air and water, filter polluted runoff, slow global warming and erosion, and provide habitat for wildlife.

Last weekend was DIFFA/KC’s annual Dining by Design event. DIFFA/KC supports the prevention of HIV and AIDS by funding education and awareness programs in Greater Kansas City. And Dining by Design is their largest and most long-standing fundraising event.

And it’s a lot of fun! Halls is proud to have been involved in this event for many years. Our visual team goes all out in designing its table each year.

This year’s table celebrated the Kansas City skyline, complete with an enormous banner depicting downtown. The photo was shot by longtime Halls collaborator, photographer Hollis Officer. It was then colored in a most Warhol-like fashion by our art director Jake Marshall.

And then our head of visual, Don Rogers, and his team set to work creating a modern and bold tablescape with bright corals, pinks, greens and yellows. The colors mirror the current fashion trends of bold, bright hues and color blocking. A perfect reflection of our spring 2012 store looks.

Downstairs associate Lee Pahcoddy picked a brand new addition to Halls to share as his staff pick. Halls now carries three custom-made styles from 3×1 for Men’s Downstairs.

3×1 denim launched in May 2011 by the founder of Paper Cloth & Denim and Earnest Sewn.

Each pair is made inside 3×1′s Soho shop at 15 Mercer St. in New York City. Made with the highest quality selvedge denim from Cone Mills in North Carolina, and from Japan, each pair is made by one tailor from start to finish. Only 22-25 pieces are produced each day, using a single needle sewing machine to obtain a clean, beautiful finish.

Each pair at Halls is numbered so you know you are getting a one of a kind item. Check out this video from 3×1, showing the creation of a one-of-a-kind pair of jeans from beginning to end:

ArtBra KC is a unique and fun art auction that celebrates the bra as an empowering symbol of triumph over breast cancer, and as a work-of-art that can benefit those breast cancer patients just beginning, or still on, the journey.

Seventy work-of-Art Bras will be auctioned to benefit the Missy’s Boutique Patients in Need Fund. And a selection of those 70 are on display in the windows at Halls Plaza through April 26!

These one-of-a-kind Art Bras will be designed and created by family & friends of survivors, local artists, celebrities and volunteers. Art Bra KC will be held at the Midland Theater in Kansas City on May 4th.

We hosted about a dozen of Kansas City’s style bloggers a few weeks ago during out It’s a Girl Thing event at Halls Plaza. And, they seemed to love checking out the newest looks by Rachel Zoe, LAMB, Sophie Theallet, Rag & Bone, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Tory Burch and Kate Spade but they got positively giddy when we introduced them to our LK Bennett shoes.

For the past few years, LK Bennett’s beautiful yet understated shoes have been a favorite of the former Kate Middleton. Beautiful yet understated is a pretty good description of the new Duchess in general if you think about it. (She also favors brands like Links of London and Mulberry - also available at Halls Plaza.)

Anyway, we’ve had a selection of LK Bennett shoes and totes in stock at Halls Plaza since spring merchandise began arriving. And they are flying out of here. Kansas City officially loves LK Bennett.

SEA LIFE Aquarium opens tomorrow at Crown Center and we couldn’t be more excited, here at Halls Crown Center!

The aquarium (and its sister attraction LEGOLAND Discovery Center – set to open later this month) took over our former first and second floors at Crown Center. You may recall that we moved The Store for Men to a gorgeous new space on the 3rd floor of the Crown Center Shops last April in anticipation of construction. Our Hallmark and home departments at Crown Center were consolidated with other locations.

We got to take a sneak peek at SEA LIFE this week and it won’t disappoint! It includes more than 30 displays designed to take visitors on a two- to three-hour journey from “the fresh waters of the Missouri River into the mighty Mississippi River, then out into the warm blue coral-strewn waters of the Caribbean Sea, ending in the deep, dark abyss of the Atlantic Ocean.” Sting rays, octopus, starfish, sea urchins, and sharks are among the thousands of sea creatures visitors will be able to check out beginning tomorrow.

We’ve made a few more changes to Halls Crown Center in celebration of our new neighbors too. First up, new store hours! We will be open from 11am to 5pm this Sunday (Easter). Thereafter, our Monday through Friday hours will remain the same. Halls for Her, The Store for Men, Kid OH!, and Downstairs in Crown Center will extend hours on Saturdays (10am-9pm) and Sundays (11am-6pm), effective April 9.

What else is new at Halls Crown Center? We’ve expanded the Kid OH! children’s department and added a Life is Good boutique. Also new, Kate Spade and Tory Burch merchandise is now available at Halls Crown Center. You’ll notice that the entire store got a little brighter, a little more fun (check out some pics of our new look here) and we love it!

And finally, in honor of our new neighbor, Halls Crown Center has added a Seaside Gifts department with terrific marine-themed accessories, items for the home, toys for the kids and more. Be sure to check it out!

It’s been a long year of construction and change around Halls Crown Center and we are thrilled to finally have our new neighbors open!

We asked Jennifer Myers, Halls’ designer ready-to-wear and handbags buyer/manager, for her fun fashion pick for spring 2012. And we LOVE what she chose!

Jennifer is shown here, wearing her choice – a look from 3.1 Phillip Lim. Modern, clean and chic, 3.1 Phillip Lim is also a very, very wearable line. We love every piece in the spring 2012 collection.

The top is one of this spring’s brights – a fuschia silk that it infinitely easy to wear. It has short sleeves and high scoop neck yet the fabric gives it a dressiness that can work for many different occasions. The rounded tails (longer in back than in front) can be tucked or untucked – as shown here on Jen.

The pants are absolutely fabulous. This trouser is also silk, in a unique, wearable print called Lightflash (print pants are another terrific spring 2012 trend). They provide the perfect contrast to a bright top. These pants taper at the bottom and are finished with ankle zippers. The best part? They have a banded waistband with a DRAWSTRING. Yep, just as comfortable as sweatpants but SO chic.
