The first night we spent in the capital city of Quito in the San Francisco, a colonial hotel in a room that not only had no view, it had no windows! The next day we flew to Cuenca at about 8000 ft elevation. It has a beautiful colonial downtown that has been spoiled with way too many modern buildings. We stayed first in the Hotel Crespo, a lovely hotel that looked out over the main river running though the city. Actually it is more like a very swift flowing creek, and is fed by melting glaciers in the nearby Andes. After three nights there we moved to a condo owned by a friend who just left that morning for two weeks in Germany.

THE VIEW FROM OUR WINDOW

The view from our window was posted in
The fresco will be on the white wall straight ahead.

The dining room is painted with a mixture of lime and natural dyes. Then a clear layer of nopal cactus juice mixed with water was added. When that was dried it was polished to give it a high sheen. This is an ancient technique that is now almost a forgotten art. The only other place we have seen this technique used is at the spectacular new Regional Museum in a former convent.

Above is the living room taken from behind our blue couch of which only an arm is visible. We had the rug woven for us by a friend Augustin Cruz, a master weaver. Then we had to have glass top coffee tables made so we could see the rug. Augustin made us matching coasters that you can see on the coffee table. Our carpenter, Jorge (George) Bautista also made the unit on which the television is sitting. It has a cabinet on top which has the sound system and drawers for CDs and DVDs.

Click on any photo to enlarge.

Day 4 - TREES GROWING FROM TOPS DOWN

This view is looking down from the balcony outside the glass wall of our office. I had been calling the art project on our patio wall a mural. Because the technique is to paint the natural dye and lime mixture on fresh concrete, it can and should be called a fresco; the word comes from the Italian word affresco which derives from the adjective fresco (fresh). Perhaps the best known fresco is that in the Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo on fresh plaster.

Maestro Gerardo de la Barrera went to Italy to learn the technique he is applying to our wall. As a maestro (teacher) he is passing on the secrets to Stuart Brandt as they work; and Stuart is teaching Gerardo how to make a mural and to give it depth. They make a great team and both are excited by the work of art they are creating.

The duo is working from the top of the fresco down so as to not drip cement on work that has been done below. Ed has already decided to hang real Spanish Moss right over the painted ones.

A view from our office balcony of the the upper part of our new tree with Spanish Moss.

DAY 1 - JUNGLE FRESCO

We are just beginning a project with two artists to do a fresco of a jungle scene on the walls of the patio. The walls are opposite the glass wall of the living and dining rooms. All of the Bedrooms also have glass walls with sliding doors overlooking the patio with its soon to be jungle scene. There will be birds, butterflies and a monkey in a tree. The fresco is going to be spectacular. One of the artists is local, Gerardo de la Barrera, and the other is a friend of ours, Stuart Brandt, who with his partner have just bought a house to remodel here in the center of the city not far from us. Since the flight to Europe leaves from NYC we will first spend a week visiting my mother and family in Berne. As you might have read, a couple of days ago the Massachusetts legislature passed a law that for the first time allows gays from out of State to get married there. I proposed to Ed that while we are in Berne we drive to Mass. and get legally married. He accepted my proposal, (even though it was not on bended knee!). The wedding will take place at the historic Village Inn in Lenox. My mother, siblings, aunts and uncles, and respective spouses will attend the ceremony. Then we will return to Berne for a reception attended by the my extended family at the pond house on my brother Ralph's farm, the location of many family celebrations.
