Armed with just $1, they must trade their work for rides beds and food to travel across America in 40 days. Will their art get them from coast to coast? The pair must make their way as quickly as possible to their final destinations, as the winner is the first one to the finish and the loser must return all his hard-earned cash.

“I’m either the last of the Gen Xers or the top of the Millennials, but I do feel ownership with their generation,” she said. “I’m humbled and grateful for the opportunity [to serve as gm]. But I carry a great deal of ownership for Halogen. Not only because I came up with the concept, but because I consider myself part of the Millennial generation.”

Believe it or not, Valentine’s Day can be more than just the barrage of pink carnations, candy hearts and Hallmark cards. You can become a channel of love for those who need it the most. So this Valentine’s Day, give of yourself and your time to people you know and complete strangers. From volunteering to buying a gift that universally gives back, here are nine charitable ways to show love this Valentine’s Day.

Valentine Run. Charity marathons raise money to help others and promote healthy living. Get your heart pumping with the 9th Annual Valentine Run in Los Angeles, Valentines Hearts ‘r’ Running 5k in St. Paul or Brevard’s Valentine’s Charity Walk in Titusville, Fla.

Fair Trade Valentine. Buy fair trade gifts from companies that ensure farmers not only get a fair deal for their crop but share in its profits, too. Try Divine Chocolate, Two Hands Workshop, Sjaaks Organic Chocolates, Cafe Gratitude for gifts that give back. Global Exchange’s National Valentine Day of Action is continuing the fight for fair practices with a campaign for teachers to educate students about fair trade on a single day.

Love Letters. What does peace mean to you? Through reflective poetry, the Valentine Peace Project encourages a creative written dialogue on peace and will be shared with people all over the world. This global effort hopes to continue the conversation of love and peace.

Small Acts of Kindness. This February, participate in the annual Random Acts of Kindness Week (13-19). Buy coffee or lunch for a stranger or friend, babysit your neighbor’s children, or mow a single mother’s lawn. Visit actsofkindness.org for more ideas.

Be My Volunteer. VolunteerMatch lists a host of volunteer opportunities in your area.

Support a Cause. Denver-based Project Valentine works to make Valentine’s Day a little sweeter for individuals going through cancer treatment. Also, With This Ring takes donations of rings to help create clean water in Africa. One ring can potentially bring clean water to an entire African village for years to come.

Animal Love. The Humane Society of the United States makes it easy to show love to furry pets. Donate your old fur or fur items to its Coats for Cubs program, which will provide warm bedding for orphaned or injured wildlife. Also, you can make a monetary donation to its Hip, Hip Humane! program. You’ll receive a personalized greeting card for the object of your affection.

Help the Needy. Deliver cookies or thoughtful Valentine’s Day cards to the homeless and elderly. Contact your local homeless shelters and retirement homes and ask how you can help.

Remember Service People. Don’t forget the people who make your life a little easier. The barista who brews your cappuccino complete with a rich foam texture, the mail carrier, even the office cleaning crew would appreciate a thank-you card.

Traveling since he was 5 years old, Scott Wilson leaps into the world’s most unusual places. From glaciers to cliffs, he’s willing to brave unknown elements for once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Justin Lukach

An avid surfer and car enthusiast, Justin Lukach took the road more traveled before his epic journey through some of the most unique and remote places on the earth. He was working at an engineering firm in Hawaii when he received a call from his old high school friend Scott and an offer to leave his day job and travel the world.

While it’s never been easier to create your own sense of sanctuary at home, a single’s life really isn’t complete without some semblance of community.

In About a Boy, the 2002 comedy where Hugh Grant almost didn’t get the girl, his character (a self-centered, independently wealthy thirtysomething named Will) realized a truth far beyond the usual “love conquers all” platitude. He discovered the need for a community of people in his life.

Sure, Will was pretty self sufficient with enough hi-tech gadgets and disposal romances to keep him entertained—all within the comfy confines of his London home. But once he let one person in his life, namely a gawky teenager who needed a father figure, and more importantly, a good friend, well, Will’s life was forever transformed.

Suddenly, he had a reason to live beyond his own needs and wants, and people he could count on when the going got tough in his own life. And it wasn’t simply found once he got married. But when you’re not in the tight quarters of a college dorm where meeting new people is practically second nature, how does a sense of community evolve naturally?

While it won’t happen without a little effort, it may be easier than you imagined.

Get With Knit

Thirty-four-year-old Amy Bickel found an unexpected connection with women she’s never actually met before through their shared love of knitting.

“It’s been a constant struggle to find people I relate to in the suburbs of West Des Moines. If you lived there, you’d know exactly what I am talking about. It’s Yuppie-ville,” Bickel said. “So I joined an online community of knitters and love it at Ravelry.com).

“I’ve never met these women, but we share stories, trade yarn, sell yarn, participate in swaps for holidays and communicate online daily,” Bickel continued. “One woman just sent me a bunch of DVDs (on loan) to watch, because I mentioned it was a TV series I hadn’t seen. I am sooo nOT the online community type, but this group appeals to me with the whole knitting commonality.”

Bickel also recently joined a book club with 12 other women with “totally different views of reading and opinions on what we read.”

Since Bickel is comfortable in her own company, she says that interacting with others who share a love of knitting and reading prevent her from going “feral.”

“I find that I become much more self focused when I spend a lot of solitary time and being around other people reminds me that the world is bigger than I am,” she said.

I Get a Kick Out of You

While 26-year-old Jenna Green of Apple Valley, Minn., still enjoys attending a weekly church service each week, she noticed that activities outside of the Sunday morning services weren’t really meeting her social needs.

So the normally shy and reserved bookworm, who normally prefers the company of a engaging novel or a great TV series ventured out of her proverbial comfort zone and joined a local soccer league.

“I signed up as a ‘free agent’ meaning I didn’t have a team, because I didn’t know a single soul who played soccer anymore. Then after several weeks I got called and asked to play with a group of complete strangers that needed a sub, and now I’ve joined the team and have met several great people who all have a great time together,” Green said. “If you have the courage for it, entering into a pre-existing group, like a soccer team, is one of the easiest ways to meet new people because everyone else is already happy and comfortable.”

Lending a Helping Hand

In addition to bonding with fellow singles in her church community, 33-year-old Katrina Glaim of Plymouth, Minn., has found sanctuary in volunteering through local humanitarian organizations.

“Nothing is more rewarding than joining together with people for the common purpose of helping the less fortunate,” Glaim said. “Whether it’s raking leaves for a neighbor or building houses through Habitat for Humanity, I can do something fun and meaningful in this single season of my life.”

In his desire to be relational, 29-year-old David Fisher of Nashville, Tenn., volunteers at a local homeless shelter on a bi-weekly basis, an experience he says he probably “gains more from than he’s actually giving.”

“In a society where individuality and working like a mad dog is constantly emphasized, doing something like this helps put life—and our need for each other—into perspective,” Fisher said. “We can’t be afraid to let people into our lives, especially those who need our help. And amazingly once you start doing this, it becomes your favorite part of the week—at least that’s what happened for me.”

The five explorers featured on “photoXplorers” are collectively known as The DK Photo Group. In the ruins of an abandoned steel mill on a cold December Sunday in 2005, six photographers came together to form the DK Photo Group. Russell Brohier, Sean Galbraith, Steve Jacobs, Laurin Jeffrey, Mathew Merrett and Jay Morrison joined together with the goal of exploring cast-off architectural spaces, and bringing their images to larger audiences. In time, Jay left the group, and the other five members carried on the name and mission.

Though each has their own artistic voice, what binds them together is their common subject matter. Exploring the forgotten, decaying and derelict relics of society, this group photographs and documents those buildings which once stood as bastions of social institutions. Now silent and testament to the history of our social past, they are artifacts left to deteriorate.

We are an urban art force like few others, moving around your world,
gaining access to the forgotten and lonely corners. We go where few know
about, where fewer still would dare to venture themselves. We are poets,
archeologists, artists, documentarians and anthropologists. We bring the
past to light, trying to understand and share it with a new generation.

We are your neighbours and coworkers, normal people who lead normal lives.
Some people collect stamps or help to save the rainforest. We collect
images and try to preserve our own local history. Just because everyone
else walks past certain locations without a second thought or glance does
not mean that we have to.

We hope our work helps you gain a new understanding of the world around you.

What drew you to appear on “Jump Shipp”?
I was had been thinking about “jumping ship” for a while. Animals are my passion but I never had a real reason to leave my job – I didn’t have a solid financial exit plan to take me from my comfy job to starting my own business.

Tell us about your experience on the show.
I had a great time and I learned a lot! Josh gave me a lot to think about and helped to get me some answers to questions that had been swirling around in my head for a long time.

What was the hardest challenge on the show?
My hardest challenge was the day spent at the ranch. While I had fun that day and did get some insight as to what it would be like working at a facility like that one, it wasn’t really in line with what I had in mind for my business. I was completely unprepared for that day.

What made you want to want to pursue your dream?
Connecting with the animals and being out from behind a desk.

Did you have any apprehension about making the jump?
Of course! The whole “no financial cushion” was my biggest fear!

What has life been like after the show?
I stayed in my position with the jewelry manufacturer for another year after the show taped and have recently left to pursue TCB Pet Care full time!

What advice would you give others who are considering a jump?
Moral support from friends and family goes a long way. Search your heart. If this is what you truly want, go for it! If fully “Jumping Shipp” is too much for you to do, take it in baby steps. Those baby steps will get you there a lot faster than just continuing to dream about it every day.
