For the rest of us, it’s sometimes hard to image that success is anywhere in the vicinity much less close enough for us to grasp. Though in truth, it could simply be that your measure of success is just a millimeter away.

So How Do You Find Your Measure of Success?

First off, you have to understand what success means to you, because it’s different for everybody. For me, it’s simply being able to make enough money so that my brother and I don’t have to worry so much. I don’t need to be filthy rich with a mansion and 20 cars, I simply want to be comfortable.

Though what I consider success may not be what you consider it to be. So for you, the idea of living in a mansion and having more cars than you could ever possibly drive, is the epitome of success. Which is absolutely cool, by the way.

So your measure of success may be when you start making a certain amount of money. Or, it could be when you’ve paid off all of your debt.

The problem is that this can sometimes feel like it’s miles and miles away from where you are right now.

Doesn’t it seem as if it’s over the hill, through the woods, and somewhere down the rabbit hole?

Your Measure of Success Is A Millimeter Away

Though according to Tony Robbins, who is a master of learning to reshape our thinking, “when it seems impossible, when it seems like nothing is going to work, you’re usually just a few millimeters away from making it happen.” It’s not some insurmountable distance. It’s really only a matter of 1 or 2 degrees in either direction.

It’s like being in the cockpit of an airplane and setting a course for New York City, but you were one degree off when putting in your destination. So instead of landing in New York, you end up in Boston. It was a mere 1 degree yet it took you miles off course.

So when you start to feel as though success is somewhere in the far away distance, just think, you’re probably only a few degrees away from where you want to be.

Shift your mindset just slightly in a different direction and see if your course doesn’t get back on track for you to reach your own measure of success.

Well, in the beginning, Google started out by putting heavy emphasis on the use of keywords on a site in order to decide what it should rank for. This allowed scammers to fool the system by shoving as many non-relevant keywords as possible onto their pages and they would instantly rank.

Soon after, Google realized their mistake and began putting more emphasis on the number of backlinks and later the number of quality backlinks that a site had. Though they soon found out that this too gave people a loophole that allowed them to rise in the rankings.

So once again, Google is changing it up. Now they have decided to add what they’re calling user activity into the mix. This means that no matter how many links you have or how great your content, if your site remains unchanged for weeks on end Google will probably pass you by.

Therefore, the more blog comments, retweets, and feed subscribers your site has, the better! If you can show Google that your site is in fact alive and well, you have a much better chance of moving up in the rankings.

So here are a few tips on improving your site’s user activity.

1. Share your content with people in your circle of influence first. The people who already know, like, and trust you are more likely to leave you comments. So this would include your personal list, facebook friends, twitter followers, blog subscribers, and so on.
2. Give you readers an incentive to leave you comments. Install the CommentLuv plugin which allows people to promote their latest blog post. Also install the No-Nofollow plugin which makes you comment links Dofollow so readers can get some link love
3. Ask for the comments. You can do this by specifically asking what people thought about the content, or by asking an open-ended question that your readers are compelled to answer.
4. Join a content syndication tribe. This is one of the best ways to ensure you get not only user activity, but also tons of free traffic to your blog. I recommend that you check out Tribe Syndication Association which is a wonderfully active free community. I also recommend Katie Freiling’s The Unified Tribe which is a paid service but will give you almost instant traffic.
5. Last but not least, write content worth commenting. This goes without saying really, but you should be writing content that people are interested in reading. If you give them good stuff they will want to comment naturally.

I hope that gives you some ideas on how to generate the user activity you need on your site. If you can get this right, along with a good linking strategy and good content, there’s no reason you can’t get your site to Google’s #1.

When I first learned the event was taking place I wasn’t going to go. Ironically, all I had were excuses for why there was no way I could make it, such as it was too expensive, or I didn’t want to have to fly. I’ve always been good about talking myself out of something great because they seem too big for me to accomplish, and if it wasn’t for my brother and my friends forcing me to stop making those excuses, I never would have made it. So I owe them all big time.

This weekend turned out to be more than I ever imagined because not only did I learn some amazing marketing techniques from the top experts in our field, but I also learned a little about myself as well. You see, I’ve always been the type of person to shy away from the things that make me nervous or uncomfortable. I’m not big on taking risks unless I’ve analyzed the situation to death, and I’m not always comfortable with interacting with people I don’t know.

So getting the chance to meet and mingle with 800 people who are all interested in the same things I am, while amazingly exciting, was also a bit scary. Questions run through my head like “what if I say something stupid?” or “what if I wont have anything to talk about?” It’s self talk like this that sometimes will keep me from putting myself out there, but as I came to realize this weekend, these are only excuses that are holding me back from greatness.

We all have things that we like to tell ourselves about why we can’t or shouldn’t do something. You know, those little gremlins in our head who thrive on destroying our confidence and keeping us from being extraordinary. At one point in day 3, Katie Freiling said something that really resonated with me. She said for us to ask ourselves “Am I committed to going where it’s uncomfortable?”

To me, this is really what it’s all about. Finding that thing that you are afraid of or uncomfortable with and then being committed to overcoming it. So for me, that’s what this event was all about. Not only overcoming my fear of meeting new people (which I found is really not that hard and it’s as easy as simply saying hello) but also my fear of flying and dealing with being so far away from home on my own. I realized that everything I was worried or nervous about, turned out to be a non-issue in the end.

So take it from me when I say that excuses get you nowhere and in order to truly find success you have to be willing to go in the direction where you are most unsure of the outcome.

Jairek Robbins, the son of Tony Robbins who spoke this weekend as well, asked us to envision what our day would look like if our life was absolutely extraordinary. If your life was absolutely extraordinary, what would your day look like? What would you be doing and who would you be doing it with? Once you can truly see where it is that you want to go, how could you not do everything in your power to get there? I know that I refuse to settle for less than my absolute best from this day forward and I hope that you will refuse to settle as well.

After having the chance to meet and speak with several multi-millionaires I came to realize that they are everyday people just like you and I. The only difference between us and them is that they didn’t let their excuses get in the way of them creating the life of their dreams.

My promise to myself, from this day forward, is to never shy away from a situation that makes me uncomfortable and to always push forward to reach my ultimate goal. For me, this is what made the whole experience worth every penny.
