Although you may know about current things going on in the city thanks to Google and your neighborhood blog (that’s us), you may not know that “Houston is considered to have one of the best culinary scenes in the country, with cuisine from around the world,” according to Visit Houston Texas. Here are some interesting facts about Houston you may now have known.

More heart surgeries are performed in the Texas Medical Center than anywhere else in the world.

Houstonians dine out more than residents of any other city—4.1 times per week, compared with the national average of 3.1. The average meal in Houston—$32.53—is less than the national average of $35.10.

The Greater Houston area has 14 major institutions of higher learning. Houston (Rice University) is the birthplace of nanotechnology.

Houston is one of only a few U.S. cities with resident professional companies in the four disciplines of the performing arts: ballet, opera, symphony and theater.

Houston’s cultural events and exhibitions report 9.2 million visits per year.

Exercises to do in the Pool at The Halstead

Get your family involved in doing some great workouts in the pool.

You don’t always have to break a sweat to get a good workout in. You can do some exercises while having fun in the pool. The pool in the Halstead community opens up Memorial Day weekend, so before you get ready to take dip in the pool, check out these exercises you can do to make your pool time effective.

Toning Arms: Stand with the feet apart, arms extended straight in front of you holding a bal. Breathing rhythmically push the ball under the water, and swing it into a figure-of-right patter through the water. Feel the varying resistance on the arms and upper body. Move in as smooth a rhythm as you can make sure not to strain your shoulders or back. Try maintaining a sturdy balance and repeat 10 times.

Total Body Stretch: Facing the side of the pool, grip on to the edge with your hands. Bend your knees and press your feet against the poolside as you inhale. While exhaling, move hips back. Take care not to lock your knees or elbows or strain your back. Repeat 10 times.

Jumping Jacks: This exercise will be greatly affected by your fitness level, so if you are a beginner do not get disappointed by the result. With practice however you will be able to perform this exercise. Start with your feet flat on the bottom of the pool and your arms relaxed by your sides.

These fun pool exercises can help you stay on track with your workouts and allow you to still have fun. Try them out when you take a dip in the pool of your Houston community.

Plant a Patio Garden in Your Houston Apartment

You can plant a garden on your patio, and these tips can help to make sure they blossom.

Beautiful gardens are not just for those with backyards. If you want to plant a garden that you can enjoy every time you step outside, you can. You can plant a patio garden in your Houston apartment, and it’s easier than you think. You can bring those refreshing scents and spring colors to your patio, and here are some tips to help you do so.

Starting with a traditional rectangular French herb trough, add a layer of foam packing peanuts before pouring in the potting mix.

Remove plants from their individual pots and place them where you wish inside the trough. (Note that some pots have planting depths marked inside, which simplifies the process somewhat.) Place trailing plants in front, about two to three finger-widths apart, and fill around them with dirt, packing down very firmly.

Top the plantings with sphagnum moss, which looks dead and brown but will get greener as you water it. Sphagnum moss holds moisture in to keep the soil from drying out.

When you want to check the dryness of the soil, stick a finger in middle of the pot; if your finger is wet, so is the soil.
