Detroit – The Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights issued the following statement in response to the Senate GOP once again introducing anti-prevailing wage legislation that would cut the pay and benefits of skilled trades workers.

“As Governor Snyder noted in his State of the State Address this week, skilled trades people are literally at the center of rebuilding our great state and are in short supply,” said Mike Jackson, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights. “If cutting pay and benefits is what Senator Meekhof and his stooges want, then they should lead by example and volunteer to cut their salaries and healthcare benefits first.

After years of advocating for greater workplace safety, labor unions won a huge victory in 1971 when the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration was created. Since then, labor unions fought for all of the safety regulations we have today. In 2009, there were 24 OSHA-related deaths in Michigan, the lowest since Michigan created MIOSHA in 1974.

After Republicans took office and began gutting Michigan’s OSHA regulations, fatalities have risen every year. In 2016, there were 44 MIOSHA related deaths. Click here to read the Op-Ed in the New York Times.

That’s the mission of Play-Place for Autistic Children. It’s a 25,000 square foot facility in Sterling Heights in Macomb County, and there’s no place like it elsewhere in the country.

Play-Place is a nonprofit that gives kids who are on the autism spectrum a safe, fun, comfortable place to hang out and play with others. And the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights is proud to have donated so much time and material to see this come to life. Click here to read more.
