How to Host a “Green” Super Bowl Party

Treat your guests to a stadium favorite - hot dogs

If you’re jumping on the “green” bandwagon, what better time is there than around Super Bowl time? The event is known not only for the game and half-time show but also for the crazy clean-up that follows. You know, all those red plastic cups all over the place and disposable plates lining the room. If you’re the one doing the entertainment that day, you’ll want to skip that and cut down on waste as much as you can, right? Well, going “green” for this year’s Super Bowl may be just what you’re looking for to solve the problem.

If you are ready to take the step, there are many things you can do to keep your party less wasteful but still fun and satisfying to guests. For example, why not make cute little gingerbread footballs and use them as place markers instead of using paper place cards? It’s a delicious way to feed guests and lead them to where they are supposed to go at the same time.

Creating a tailgate party ambience with “stadium food” is a good idea, feeding guests a Super Bowl menu that includes things like steamed hot dogs and chili. This is both greener and cheaper for you! To reduce the carbon footprint, go the vegetarian or vegan way and make vegetarian chili and vegan or vegetarian hot dogs.

Skipper is a 3 month old male chihuahua / maltese mix. He and his siblings were rescued with their mom from an abandoned house. Their mom is a 9 lb maltese mix (shown in 3rd pic). We have no idea who dad was but the puppies appear to be mixed with chihuahua. Skipper is a very sweet, friendly and playful puppy. Get Ready to Zumba Your Way to Fitness in Shawnee, KS

Let's Zumba!

As I mentioned in a previous post, Zumba is one of the biggest fitness crazes to hit the dance scene in the last few years. I have heard so much about it that I started getting irritated. My thought was, “It’s Zumba! Okay, get over it!” Then I broke down and took a class. I have now jumped on the Zumba bandwagon. Yes, I am now one of those people who talks about it incessantly. Sorry to those I had judged; I now take back my earlier comments about it.

Here I go again, talking about my newest fave in fitness: Zumba is not only a great way to shed a few pounds, but it’s also a ton of fun. The class combines dancing and aerobics with a Latin twist. Don’t worry if you don’t think you can dance; I’m not the best at it but it’s pretty easy to shake it during this class when you surrender to the music! You’ll work up a sweat, but you’ll enjoy doing it, so if you’re open to it, think about taking a class here in Shawnee. Classes are happening now, with new series beginning on the 23^rd and 28^th of this month. Classes range in price from $30-$55. Click here if you are interested in registering.

If you haven’t visited the Shawnee area, allow me to introduce you. Located in close proximity to Kansas City, Shawnee is situated in northwest Johnson County in Kansas – a western suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. We are a very bike-friendly community, and Shawnee was the first city in our metro area to adopt a bike transportation plan that included on-road and off-road bicycle facilities. What does that mean to us? It is becoming easier to explore the beauty of the surrounding area by getting us up close while also getting in some exercise. There are over 18 miles of on-street bike lanes and 27.6 miles of off-street recreational trails for the public to access.

Blue Valley West Freshman Wins ‘Who Wants to Be a Mathematician’ Competition

Congrats, Blue Valley West!

Congratulations go out to Blue Valley West High School for one of their freshmen’s win in a math contest. Freshman Shyam Narayanan finished first in the third annual Who Wants to Be a Mathematician, which took place on Friday in Boston.

The Blue Valley West student competed against 9 other contestants who were selected based on their scores on a qualifying test that was sent to schools nationwide. In addition to his win, he has made history for the contest; he is the youngest person ever to qualify for the competition. The American Mathematical Society organized the competition to reward strong math students.

Naranyan plans on using his $10,000 winnings to start a math club at his school. He will keep half and the math department will take the other half.

Way to go, Shyam!

Happy New Year, Hampton Woods! We would like to wish you a holiday filled with quality time with loved ones as you celebrate throughout the weekend. Cook Up Sesame Noodles for Good Luck in the New Year

Eat up for good luck, Hampton Woods!

New Year’s Day is coming up fast, and if you’re still looking for things to add to your holiday menu like I have been, I’d like to see if I can help. Given the fact that there are many foods that are said to be lucky around this time, I want to provide you with a recipe that covers one – noodles. Here is the recipe for Elise’s Sesame Noodles. It yields 8 servings (1 ½ cups each) and only takes 20 minutes to make:

Ingredients

1 pound whole wheat spaghetti
1/2 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons sesame oil
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar or lime juice
1 1/2 teaspoons crushed red pepper
1 bunch scallions, sliced & divided
1/4 cup chopped cilantro (fresh), divided
4 cups snow peas, trimmed and sliced on the bias
1 medium red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1/2 cup toasted sesame seeds
