What Happens When Precious Metal Prices Rise

Solid Gold Jewellery Australia

Gold and silver are globally traded commodities, with prices influenced by factors far beyond the jewellery industry: currency markets, geopolitical uncertainty, inflation and investment demand all play a role.

When those prices rise sharply, jewellers are faced with a practical reality; the raw materials that go into each piece simply cost more, often for reasons that may have very little to do with jewellery.

At that point, every jewellery brand has to make difficult choices. Some might manage to absorb costs for a while and hope for the best, but most will need to raise prices to be sustainable. Others instead might quietly change what their jewellery is made from - and these changes aren't always obvious to customers, especially when a piece still looks gold-coloured or silver-toned at first glance.

This is where the jewellery market can become confusing. Two pieces may look similar online, but be made from very different materials and with very different outcomes over time. Rising metal prices tend to accelerate this divergence, making it more important than ever to understand what sits beneath the surface.

The Quiet Shift in the Jewellery Industry

When the cost of precious metals rises, the changes within the jewellery industry aren't always obvious at first. Instead of dramatic announcements, many shifts happen quietly - through altered material choices, thinner finishes, changes in how jewellery is described online, or simply necessary price increases.

One response to rising metal costs from some jewellery brands is a move away from solid precious metals altogether. Jewellery that was once made in sterling silver, solid gold or quality gold vermeil may now be produced using base metals such as brass which has a thin plating gold or silver. On the surface, these pieces can look similar to real precious metals, especially in product photos, but they behave very differently once worn.

While gold vermeil and gold filled jewellery can be decent quality and affordable alternatives to solid gold when produced to proper standards, thinner plating wears much more quickly - and it always will wear through sooner or later.

These shifts aren't always clearly communicated. Terms like "gold jewellery" or "gold finish" can sound reassuring, but without detailed material descriptions you won't know what a piece is actually made from, how long it's likely to last, whether it can be repaired or if it will retain its value down the track.

For customers, this creates a challenging environment. Jewellery prices may vary widely between pieces that appear similar, and without an understanding of materials it can be difficult to tell whether you're paying for lasting value or for something which will only look good for a brief time.

Why Precious Metals Are Precious (Beyond the Name)

Gold and silver aren't considered precious simply because of tradition or marketing. They're valued because of how well they behave over time, including how they wear, how they age, and how they can be maintained, repaired and even reused. Rarity also plays a role.

Sterling silver and solid gold are inherently durable materials. They can be polished, resized, soldered, repaired and restored as needed, often multiple times over the life of a piece. Scratches, knocks and signs of wear don't signal the end of a jewellery item: they're simply part of its story, and in most cases can be addressed by a skilled jeweller.

And if a precious metal piece truly falls out of favour or isn't worth repairing, it can always be scrapped, melted down and used again and again for something new - it will always retain some sort of value.

Real Sterling Silver Jewellery

Precious metals also age honestly. Silver develops a natural patina, while gold retains its colour and integrity - potentially for millennia. Rather than degrading suddenly, these materials change gradually, which is one of the reasons they've been used in jewellery for thousands of years.

When you choose jewellery made from precious metals, you're choosing materials that are designed to last - not just visually, but structurally.

There's also an important practical consideration: precious metals are generally safe and stable against the skin. This makes them particularly suitable for everyday jewellery that's worn close to the body, where allergic reactions and other issues caused by base metals can be a real problem for many people.

Those guides go deeper into the technical details, but what matters here is the bigger picture: precious metals offer longevity, repairability, skin friendliness, and transparency in a way that base metal jewellery simply can't.

When metal prices rise, these qualities become even more significant. Jewellery made from precious materials may cost more upfront, but it's far more likely to remain wearable, repairable and valued over time.

Precious metal jewellery is always an investment rather than being something that needs to be discarded once its surface appeal wears away.

The Problems with Plated Base Metal Jewellery

Plated jewellery often looks fine initially, but its lifespan is closely tied to how thick that plating is and how the piece is worn.

These pieces are typically made from base metals (frequently brass), then coated with a thin layer of gold or silver plating to achieve the desired appearance. While this approach keeps upfront prices lower, it comes with important limitations that aren't always obvious to customers at the point of purchase.

The key consideration is wear. Plating is a surface treatment, not the material itself. All plating will wear through eventually, but it will happen much more quickly with rings, bracelets and necklaces, especially those that are worn frequently and even more so if the plating is thin.

Even 1 micron plating will wear through soon enough on rings, bracelets and pieces worn daily. Flash plating which is 0.1-0.5 microns won't last long at all for many designs.

Once the plating has worn through, the underlying base metal is exposed, not only changing the look and feel of the piece for the worst, but also adding the risk of allergic reactions and discoloured skin (and even worse if the underlying metal contains nickel, which brass sometimes does).

At that stage, your options are limited. Unlike solid sterling silver or solid gold, plated base metal jewellery generally can't be polished back to its original appearance or repaired in a meaningful way (and rings can't be resized either). Re-plating is sometimes possible, but it's expensive for a one-off item, often short-lived and rarely restores a piece to how it looked when new.

For many wearers, this means jewellery that will stop being worn and ends up being discarded far sooner than expected; the initial cost savings simply don't pay off in the long run. So if you're wondering "Is plated jewellery worth it?", then in many cases the answer is likely to be "no".

There's also a transparency issue. Naming something "silver jewellery" or "gold jewellery" may just describe the colour and not actually what the material is - and certainly not how thick the plating is if it's plated, or how the piece is likely to age. Without clear material descriptions, it can be difficult for customers to understand what compromises have been made.

To their credit, a number of mainstream online jewellery stores do now list the materials for each product, but it might not be clear up front, especially if you don't know to look for it.

None of this means that every plated piece is inherently wrong for every situation. But when jewellery is intended to be worn regularly, kept for years, or gifted with the expectation that it will last, these limitations really do matter. Understanding how different materials behave over time helps set realistic expectations and avoids disappointment later on.

What "Affordable Jewellery" Really Means Today

As the cost of precious metals has risen, the idea of what counts as "affordable jewellery" has naturally shifted as well. Not long ago, it was easier to find solid silver or solid gold-accented pieces at relatively low price points. Today, the reality of rising material costs mean that genuine precious metal jewellery must sit at a noticeably higher baseline, even when designs are kept intentionally simple.

That doesn't mean affordable jewellery has disappeared. It means that affordability now has more to do with honest choices than with headline prices. Jewellery can still be accessible without cutting corners, as long as the materials and construction are clear and the compromises, if any, are made thoughtfully.

Sterling silver remains one of the most accessible precious metals for jewellery. It offers durability, repairability and long-term wear, and is still at a much lower entry point than solid gold. This is why it continues to play such an important role in well-made, everyday jewellery. Silver pieces can be worn frequently, maintained over time, and repaired if needed, making them a genuinely practical choice rather than a compromise.

Choosing smaller or more delicate gold designs is a good way into owning and wearing solid gold jewellery without needing to invest in very expensive statement pieces. Alloy choice can also make a difference: 14ct gold (14K) offers excellent durability and rich colour at a lower cost than 18ct (18K), without the significant colour dilution seen in lower carat options - 14ct gold is my own preference when creating solid gold jewellery.

This information combined with your own knowledge of materials is a good indicator of quality. Brands that take materials seriously tend to explain them clearly because they're confident in the decisions they've made. Whether you're buying from a small independent maker or a larger retailer, seeking out that clarity helps you make choices that align with your expectations and values.

It's always worth paying attention to the language being used. Be wary of product names that are really describing the colour of the piece and not the substance. If a product description doesn't go on to clearly state the materials used and the thickness of any plating, it's reasonable to ask questions or simply look elsewhere.

It's also worth considering how a piece is intended to be worn. Fashion jewellery intended for occasional use may have very different material requirements to something worn daily that you want to last. Rings, bracelets and necklaces that sit against the skin experience far more friction and wear than earrings worn only now and then. Matching materials to lifestyle can make a significant difference to how long jewellery remains enjoyable to wear.

Repairability is another useful lens. Precious metal jewellery can usually be resized, polished, soldered or repaired if needed. If a piece can't be repaired at all - or would cost more to fix than to replace - that's an important factor to weigh up when comparing prices.

Another factor are the issues that come with fast, disposable fashion in the modern world (keeping in mind that most plated base metal jewellery is not recyclable).

Throughout my career as a jewellery designer and maker, I've chosen to work with materials that behave honestly and provide good value over time - and that I have come to know well after working with them for decades.

Using precious metals means that jewellery can be repaired, polished and maintained as life happens. Great jewellery doesn't need to sit quietly. It catches the light. It sparks curiosity. It starts conversations. It makes you feel something.

It isn't intended to be for everyone, but the jewellery I design is for people who want to wear something that reflects who they are - their creativity, their quirkiness, their boldness, their love of art and meaning. That doesn't have to mean enormous or flashy, but it does mean creating pieces with heart, soul, and a spark of individuality.

My feeling is that jewellery should be more than just an accessory. It's wearable art that communicates something about the wearer. It can be delicate and delightful, but it should never be dull. It can be simple, but not soulless. It can be personal and precious - without being precious about it.

At its best, jewellery should become part of how you express yourself. That's always been my approach - and that's why I've never been interested in doing what everyone else is doing.

A Different Approach to Jewellery Design

Unlike many jewellery designers who come from a trade or fashion background, I trained in visual arts. Jewellery and Metal was my major subject when I studied visual arts, both at university and technical college many years ago.

Although I create very wearable pieces for Simone Walsh Jewellery, my approach has always been more like that of a studio artist or artisan jewellery designer: driven by creative exploration, attention to detail, and a love of materials.

I'm not designing products to hit mass-market trends or seasonal fashion charts. I'm creating small-batch pieces that feel personal, expressive, and created with real intention.

Essentially I design what interests me: it might be a creative idea or aesthetic I'm drawn to, or it could be a material, technique or colour palette I'm excited to explore. I let my curiosity and creativity lead the way.

I feel very lucky that the work I love to create has found its people. Thousands of customers over many years have connected with these designs - not just once, but often again and again. Some have built collections of their own, others have been gifting pieces to loved ones for decades. It's such a privilege to make creative jewellery that resonates with people - that becomes part of their story, not just something to wear.

This freedom to design from a place of inspiration rather than obligation is what keeps the work alive for me - and, I think, what gives it life for the people who wear it too.

So much of what's considered 'everyday' jewellery is designed to disappear. Tiny charms, delicate chains, whisper-thin hoops - safe, subtle pieces that don't ask much of the wearer and don't leave much of an impression. Those sorts of pieces may well have their place, but that's not what we do.

My love of detail shows up in everything I make, from stylised botanical motifs to swirling patterns, from deeply textured or intricately cut out surfaces to luminous gemstones in vibrant colours.

It looks like the world is currently catching on to more eye-catching and bold jewellery: there's been a lot of talk lately about quirky, colourful, maximalist styles and statement jewellery making a big comeback.

However, I was into creating this style of jewellery before it was cool! And I was into it before it was cool the last time around too.

In a world flooded with cheaply plated base metals, fake imitations, and mystery materials, I've always chosen to work with precious metals and quality gemstones - including more ethical lab-grown or even simulated stones where appropriate.

I create real solid sterling silver jewellery and gold jewellery, not just because they're beautiful metals, but because they're lasting and they retain their value. These are materials that don't just shine - they endure.

Quality alternatives which are more affordable than solid gold also have their place and we do have pieces using these materials, such as gold filled and gold vermeil.

There's something deeply satisfying about wearing a piece that has weight, texture, and integrity. You can feel the difference. It warms to your skin. It ages gracefully. It's the kind of jewellery you can wear every day, have repaired as needed, and still pass on one day - not something that flakes, discolours, causes skin issues, or ends up in landfill after a few wears.

Of course, working with precious materials also means designing responsibly. As an intentionally small business we simply can't afford to waste valuable materials. I create small batches, focus on thoughtful production, and avoid the kind of waste that mass production often creates. It's slow jewellery - by design.

There are lots of ways to make jewellery more cheaply or to use misleading marketing to sell it to unsuspecting customers. But I'd rather make it well, make it meaningful, and make it honest.

Especially avoid terms like silver plated or nickel silver. These are not solid silver and won't offer the same longevity or value. Nickel silver really is just nickel which is potentially dangerous to wear against your skin, while plated silver will wear through over time - especially thin flash plating which won't last long at all.

2. Understand different types of silver

• Sterling Silver (92.5%) - durable and ideal for everyday wear
• Fine Silver (99.9%) - softer and less commonly used
• Argentium Silver - more tarnish-resistant, but less widely used

3. Be realistic about pricing

If a piece seems unusually cheap, there's usually a reason. Quality silver jewellery reflects the materials used, the craftsmanship and designer's expertise involved. While real silver jewellery is a lot more affordable than solid gold designs, it still isn't cheap.

At the same time, very high prices don’t always equal better quality - sometimes you're simply paying for branding rather than substance.

4. Check the craftsmanship

• Smooth finishes (unless intentionally textured)
• Secure gemstone settings
• Reliable clasps and fastenings

Find Your 3 Words

There's not much point diving in to discover how to style jewellery if you're not clear on what your own personal style is. If that's the case for you, then this is the perfect first step to sort out your jewellery and other styling issues.

Maybe your wardrobe is a jumble of different styles, and you're not sure how to pull it all together. Or you've bought jewellery and clothing that looks great in theory but just doesn't feel right when you put it on. Or perhaps you know what you like, but you couldn't really describe it.

You're not alone. Even as a designer with years of experience, I found defining my personal style and figuring out what really works was just as challenging for me as it is for most people.

The 3 Words Method: A Game-Changer for Personal Style

This simple but powerful approach will help you pinpoint your signature style and make more intentional choices. You don't have to be a fashion tragic to find it incredibly helpful when working out how to dress and how to shop.

The 3 Words Method is the brainchild of fashion stylist Allison Bornstein. I came across the concept via the brilliant Articles of Interest podcast (the 'How to Dress' episode is a highly recommended listen, but all of them are great).

Various style aficionados have different ways of thinking about this method, but the core concept is beautifully simple:

Choose three words that best describe your personal style

Your 3 Words will act as a simple guiding framework when choosing outfits, jewellery, and accessories, ensuring everything you own and buy feels cohesive and true to you. Keep reading for some examples of 3 Word combinations to get some ideas of the types of words that will work for this process.

For this to work you need to step outside of fashion and trends: think about who you are as a person and how you want to present to the world. Also consider what you loved wearing a few years ago and how you might like to be dressing years in the future. What's consistent and feels authentically 'you'?

To come up with my own 3 Words, I started by creating a private Pinterest board, adding outfits and accessories that caught my eye and which I could genuinely imagine wearing. After collecting a good number of pins, I started to notice patterns, certain colours, silhouettes, and textures kept popping up.

After also looking through my existing wardrobe and some reflection, I landed on my three words:

• Simple - Clean lines, effortless styling, unfussy pieces.
• Colour-pop - Vibrant colours against neutral backgrounds.
• Graphic - Bold and clear shapes, stylised imagery and patterns.

Since defining my 3 Words, choosing clothes, jewellery, and accessories to wear or shop for has become much easier. In particular I can now much more easily avoid impulse purchases that sit unworn in my wardrobe or buying really lovely things ... which don't remotely suit me.

How to Find Your Own 3 Words

Ready to give it a go? Below are some ways to discover your own style words. Do one, or better still, do all of them and make your decision at the end of the process.

Option 1: The Inspiration Board Method

• Create a private Pinterest board, saved folder on Instagram, collection of screenshots or a similar way to collate images.
• Collect images of outfits, jewellery, accessories, and general looks that appeal to you and that you can imagine enjoying wearing.
• After collecting at least 20 images look for common themes, for example:
• Are the styles minimal or bold?
• Do bright colours dominate? Any particular colours?
• Is the vibe feminine, classic, artistic, etc?
• If there are similar types of patterns or other design elements, how would you describe them?
• Identify three words that sum up these recurring themes: ensure they really resonate with you, are likely to remain relevant and aren't about current trends.
• Again, you can also try the next option to see what it adds to your thinking before you decide.

Option 2: The Closet Audit Method

• Get out your favourite outfits: Choose the ones that make you feel confident and comfortable.
• Lay out your go-to jewellery pieces and accessories: Are they delicate? Chunky? Colourful? Statement pieces?
• Look for patterns: In fabric, colour, shape, mood and more.
• Choose the three words that describe what you love most about your personal style.
• You can also continue to the next option to see what else it adds to the process.

Option 3: The Word Association Method

• Without overthinking, write down 5-10 words that describe how you want to look and feel when dressed.
• Circle the top 3 words that resonate the most.
• If you're happy with what you've ended up with, then these are your three words.
• Otherwise, try the earlier options if you haven't already.

If you've taken the time to work out your 3 Words (see above) or have another way of defining your personal style, doing a 'jewellery reset' is the perfect next step.

The Jewellery Reset Exercise will help you to:

• Reassess what you own and rediscover forgotten favourites.
• Align your jewellery with your personal style.

Step 1: The Jewellery Dump

Find a clear surface and gather every single piece of jewellery you own. Yes, even the ones hidden at the back of drawers or tangled up in an old jewellery box.

Seeing everything in one place makes it easier to evaluate what you have.

Take a moment to appreciate your collection. You may have more (or less) than you thought.

Step 2: Sort into Categories

Now, divide your jewellery into three simple piles:

1. Love & Will Wear: These are your go-to pieces that align with your personal style and will get plenty of wear. You can include sentimental pieces that you wear most days, such as a wedding ring or symbolic necklace. Keep these pieces front and centre.
2. Sentimental but Rarely Worn: Some jewellery is treasured for sentimental reasons but doesn't get much wear. Consider storing these safely but separately from your other jewellery, or finding new ways to incorporate them into outfits.
3. Not Your Style / Unworn: Be honest! If a piece no longer fits your style, feels outdated, or isn't something you enjoy wearing, put it aside (we'll decide what to do with these in Step 5).

Pro Tip: Try to identify themes with your 'keepers'. You'll get insights into choices you've made (or that others have made for you). Are you drawn to delicate jewellery, bold statement pieces, mixed metals, colourful gemstones? This will help identify what you love and will truly suit you.

Step 3: Find Gaps & Opportunities

Now that you've sorted your collection, you likely have at least several pieces that love and intend to wear. Now think about what's missing. Ask yourself:

• Do I have the basics covered (see below for must-have jewellery designs)?
• Do I have jewellery that suits different occasions (casual, work, dressy special events, holidays)?
• Are there gaps in my colour palette (eg. do you mostly have silver or gold and would like a mix, or do you love brightly coloured gemstones and there aren't many)?
• Do I need more layering or stacking options (eg. rings, bracelets, necklaces)?

Think about any gaps or improvements you've identified which will make your jewellery collection more versatile and more 'you'. Make a wishlist, describing the pieces you'd like to add. I suggest making a note of your 'why' for each piece or describing how it might be worn. That way it your decisions will still make sense when you look at your list later.

Step 4: Clean & Organise Your Collection

Clean Your Jewellery:

If the jewellery you've selected to keep is looking tired or hasn't been cleaned in a while, this is the perfect opportunity to clean it before you put it away. You wouldn't put your dirty clothes back into a drawer without washing them, so don't do that with your jewellery either.

Also cleaning jewellery before appropriately storing it means your pieces will be in great condition to wear when you're getting dressed.

Give your jewellery collection a check and a clean a couple of times a year, with more frequent cleaning (especially a gentle wash) for pieces you wear often. Put it in your diary!

Organise & Store Your Jewellery:

Now it's time to organise and store your jewellery in a way that makes it easy see, access, and make use of. Here are some storage suggestions to get you thinking about what will work for you:

1. Keep favourites easily accessible:

   I really don't recommend using jewellery display stands that are out in the open. Free flowing air, dust and humidity are not your friends when it comes to jewellery - especially precious metals.

   One idea might be boxes with added padding and perhaps clear lids. My personal preference is stackable and purpose-built padded jewellery boxes with different sections for different types of jewellery.

   Go for whatever works for you that both protects your jewellery and allows you to access it easily and see what you've got with minimal effort. And it should fit your budget, of course.

2. Store delicate & problematic items carefully

   Don't let your metal or gemstone pieces rub or knock against each other when they're in storage. This will cause dents and scratches. For delicate and valuable pieces, think about using individual soft pouches or small padded boxes to keep them extra safe.

   For necklaces that are likely to tangle, use specially designed jewellery storage that will help with this. A great simple solution is to use drinking straws to slip chains through so that they can't easily get knotted.

3. Sort by type, colour, theme or sets

   Group similar pieces together in a way that works for you. The simplest way might be to have all rings, earrings, etc grouped together. This way when you're looking for, say, a pendant necklace, you can see what you've got of that type and pick the one that works.

   Alternatively group things by what you would wear together. Then you can quickly pull out a suite of pieces you want to wear with particular outfits without much thought. The downside to this method is that you may end up wearing the same sets repeatedly, so give your groupings a refresh occasionally.

Step 5: Refresh, Repurpose, or Re-Home Unwanted Jewellery

For the jewellery you aren't going to wear and have no reason to keep, you have a few options which don't involve just throwing it out:

• Repurpose - Could you wear a pendant on a new chain? Stack rings differently? Convert earrings into charms? Use a piece as a decoration?
• Gift or Donate - If a piece is still in great condition but no longer your style, consider passing it on to a friend or donating it.
• Sell or Trade - Higher-value or more unique pieces might be worth selling or swapping for something you'll actually wear.
• Scrap & Recycle - If it's precious metal (especially solid gold) you can potentially sell it as scrap, meaning the metal will be melted down and used again to make new jewellery or other products.

One of the most common (and, frankly, unhelpful) distinctions is between so-called precious stones and semi-precious stones. Honestly, I think it's a silly and out-dated distinction! I much prefer to focus on the beauty, appropriate use and ethical sourcing of stones rather than these old-fashioned and poorly considered classifications.

We use a small number of simulated gemstones, but always make this clear in our product listings.

We also use lab-grown and simulated stones, especially when they offer a more ethical and affordable alternative to mined varieties.

Below are some common cuts we use in our jewellery designs.

Gemstone Beaded Necklaces

Cabochons: Smooth, domed stones with no facets. They have a soft, organic feel and are ideal for showing off rich colours or unique internal patterns in a gemstone. We love using cabochons for their timeless look and versatility. They are most often set in bezel-type settings (a strip of metal which is rubbed over the edge of the stone to hold it in place).

Rose Cut Cabochons: A lovely variation which have have a flat base and a faceted, dome-like top, giving you the best of both worlds between cabochons and faceted stones: a soft shape with just a touch of sparkle.

Faceted Stones: These are cut with flat surfaces (or facets) to reflect light and add brilliance. We use classic faceted cuts in designs where the stone can really shine, both literally and figuratively. These may be set in claw or basket settings (prongs of wire which are shaped and cut to hold the stones) or in settings made from tube and using a rubbed over bezel to hold them in place.

Beads: Gemstone beads are shaped and polished pieces of stone, usually drilled so they can be strung together. They come in many shapes - from smooth rounds to faceted or freeform cuts - and are ideal for creating layered, wearable pieces full of texture and colour. We use gemstone beads in many of our beaded necklaces for a relaxed but vibrant look that's easy to dress up or down.

Rather than following trends, we choose gemstone cuts based on how they work with the stone itself and especially how they fit into our wearable, everyday designs. It's all about balance, beauty and personality.

Be very cautious of vague descriptions like 'silver-tone' or 'gold finish': they often indicate cheap base metals with - at best - a thin plating of silver or gold that will quickly wear off. You may even find there is no precious metal at all, with pieces being made solely from base metals like brass or (even worse) nickel, which we don't recommend you wear against your skin.

My best advice is that if the description isn't clear about what materials piece of jewellery is made from, then you should steer clear.

Look for mentions of recycled metals, responsibly sourced gemstones, local or small-scale and ethical production, and low-waste packaging. It shows the business cares about people and the planet as much as the products they create.

4. Longevity & Repairability

Good jewellery is designed to last for years - and ideally, decades and even beyond. It should stand up well to everyday wear and be repairable if something does go wrong. It's not unusual for jewellery to require repair over time, especially when it comes to claw set gemstones or friction locket clasps which can need tightening or adjustment over time.

Taking your precious pieces to a jeweller for repair should always be an option. Many of those big name shopping mall brands you'll encounter might sell cheap pieces made in precious metals, but their cheaply made designs can be difficult to impossible to repair by a manufacturing jeweller - my advice is to avoid them and invest in better quality.

If you have purchased pieces made in base metals, then repair either may not be possible or be much more expensive than the value of the jewellery.

What to Look For When Shopping for Australian Jewellery Online

Not all jewellery is created equal - and that's especially true when buying online. If you want to invest in quality Australian jewellery that will last and delight, here are the key things to consider:

1. Be Clear on the Materials Used

It's worth repeating: materials really do matter.

For instance, even when shopping for less expensive costume jewellery, you really don't want to end up with a toxic and potentially allergy-inducing metal like nickel sitting against your skin. Or if you're purchasing an expensive piece, you'll want to be sure that it's solid precious metal and not just a thin plating.

The bottom line is: if a jewellery outlet isn't upfront about what materials are used in their designs, then my advice is to shop elsewhere. It really isn't worth the risk to be wearing mystery metals.

2. Transparent Product Information

Reputable jewellery brands will provide detailed descriptions. These should of course be clear about the materails used, but also clear sizes or dimensions, how the piece is made, any relevant policies or important information relating to the designs, etc.. If this information is lacking, then you should question whether the online store you're looking at is worth spending your money with.

Also look for clear photography and close up shots from multiple angles so you know what you're getting. Jewellery photography can be fiendishly difficult (trust me!). Even with the best of intentions, it can be tricky to perfectly capture what a piece will look like in reality, so it's a good idea to check the returns policies as well.

3. Who Made It - and How?

Does the brand design their pieces locally? Are the items entirely made in-house or is there a trusted and ethically run partner workshop involved? It's okay if some components are sourced elsewhere (we have components made to our designs by an external workshop, as well as making and finishing pieces in our own workshop), but ethical, small-scale production should still be a priority - at least I think so anyway.

A good, trustworthy jewellery brand or other independent design brand should be upfront about their processes and values. If this matters to you, then be sure to check.

4. Returns & Aftercare

Before purchasing, you should always take a look at the store's returns policy. Can you return or exchange the item if needed? What aftercare is offered? Many small businesses have a 'no fault' return policy (such as our own Happiness Guarantee) but certainly not all: it always pays to check before you buy.

Red Flags to Avoid

• Vague or Overly Generic Listings: If a product description doesn't say what it's made from or who designed it, that's a sign to tread carefully.
• Inconsistent Photography: If product photos vary wildly across the store in terms of lighting and presentation, then there's a fair chance they weren't taken by the store selling the items. Either they are reselling mass-produced products or the images are stolen and the store is more of a scam.
• Suspiciously Low Prices: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Precious metals and quality craftsmanship come at a cost - and that's a good thing.
• Plated Base Metals (Unlabelled): Some cheaper jewellery is made from brass, nickel or mystery metals with a thin gold or silver coating. These may tarnish or cause skin reactions and flash plating can wear off quickly.
• No Contact Details, Business Info, or Policies: The lack of a return policy, business address, ABN or similar business registration details, along with difficulties in making contact with a store are major red flags.

But it doesn't have to be that way. This quick and easy Christmas pudding recipe has been passed down through my family for decades, and we still make it every year. It's much lighter than many traditional recipes, it's quick to put together, and it uses simple ingredients - no eggs, no alcohol, and no stress.

As an Australian jewellery designer who makes silver Christmas pudding coins, I often get asked for a pudding recipe that works well with our coins. This one is my go-to: it's easy, delicious, and never fails to impress. It's also the very same recipe I include with every set of coins, along with my Nana's wonderfully indulgent brandy sauce.

About This Recipe

This simple Christmas pudding recipe has been in my family for generations. We believe it came about during the Great Depression, when ingredients like eggs and alcohol were expensive or hard to come by. Instead, it uses cold tea to give it a lovely flavour and richness - and the end result is anything but plain.

The pudding has a lighter texture and isn't as intensely rich as many traditional versions, which makes it more appealing to modern tastes - I definitely prefer it, particularly after a big Chrismtas lunch!

It's also very forgiving: there's no need to make it weeks ahead (in fact it's best made on the day), and it can even be adapted for a vegan Christmas pudding with one easy substitution.

It might not be the fanciest recipe, but it's been the highlight of our Christmas table for decades — and I hope it becomes a favourite for your family too.

Can You Make a Vegan Christmas Pudding?

Absolutely. This pudding is already egg-free, and the only non-vegan ingredient is a small amount of butter. Simply swap it out for a plant-based alternative (like a mild olive oil or vegan butter) and you've got a lovely vegan Christmas pudding. It's that easy.

Just note that my family's very indulgent brandy sauce isn't vegan. You'll want to make or buy a plant-based custard instead.

When Should You Make It?

Unlike traditional plum pudding recipes that need to age for weeks, this one is best made fresh on Christmas Day. We usually mix it in the morning or even the evening before and let it sit in the pudding basin, ready to steam while we eat lunch. It smells amazing and will be ready just in time for dessert.

If you prefer, you can make it a day or two ahead: just store it in the fridge and gently reheat when it's time to serve.

How to Serve Your Christmas Pudding

This pudding is wonderful on its own, but it really shines when topped with brandy custard or brandy butter. You can go the traditional route and bring it to the table with a sprig of holly, douse it with a little brandy, and set it alight for a bit of drama — just be sure to dim the lights!

Otherwise, slice it up in the kitchen and serve hot portions straight into bowls. It keeps well in the fridge for a few days, so leftovers won't go to waste (though we rarely have any!).

What Exactly Is an Opal?

Opals are a unique type of gemstone made from tiny spheres of silica that have formed over millions of years, often in cracks or voids in rock.

Unlike most gemstones in jewellery, opals don't have a crystal structure: instead, their beauty comes from the way those silica spheres diffract light. This is what creates the distinctive 'play of colour' that opals are famous for: shimmering flashes of red, blue, green, and gold that shift as you move.

Most natural opals are formed from a slow process involving water carrying silica into rock cavities. Over time the water evaporates, leaving behind the silica deposits that eventually become opal. The result? No two opals are exactly the same - each one is a tiny, unpredictable miracle of nature.

Opals come in a surprisingly wide range of colours and types, well beyond the typical flashes of reds, greens and blues you may be familiar with - and that's part of what makes them so fascinating.

There's a surprising variety of opals, each with its own look, value and personality. Here's a quick rundown of the most common types you might come across when shopping for opal jewellery:

1. Precious Opal

This is the classic opal most people think of: it displays the famous play-of-colour, with flashes of multiple hues that seem to move and shift in the light. Precious opals are the most valuable type and are usually cut as cabochons (a smooth, rounded shape) to show off their colours.

2. White or Light Opal

This variety has a pale or milky base colour, which can range from white to soft grey or cream. The play-of-colour sits on top of this light background, creating a pastel, dreamy effect. It's one of the most common types of Australian opal and can be more affordable than darker varieties.

3. Single Coloured Opals (Without Play-of-Colour)

Not all opals display the famous flashes of colour. Some have a more subtle, single-colour appearance - often in soft whites, creams, pinks, yellows and even blues and greens. These types are still genuine opals, but they lack the iridescent effect of precious opal. They can be a beautiful and unique choice for jewellery, with a gentle, organic quality all of their own. We love using these softer-hued stones in some of our designs for a more understated look.

4. Fire Opal

Fire opals are typically translucent to transparent with a vivid body colour - most often red, orange or yellow. Unlike other precious opals, they may or may not have play-of-colour. The variety we use in our jewellery features a rich, glowing red-orange hue that really stands out. Fire opals are found mainly in Mexico and are prized for their bold, fiery appearance.

5. Black Opal

Black opals are considered the most valuable and rare. They have a dark base tone - not always black, but usually dark grey or blue - which makes the play-of-colour appear especially vivid. Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is famous worldwide for producing high quality black opals.

6. Boulder Opal

Boulder opals are unique to Queensland, Australia. They form in thin seams within ironstone rock and are cut with part of the natural host rock still attached. This makes each one completely distinctive, often with unusual shapes or patterns. The ironstone backing also makes them quite durable.

7. Doublets & Triplets

These are composite stones made from thin slices of precious opal, layered with a backing (doublet) and often a clear protective top layer (triplet). They allow the use of thinner, more fragile pieces of opal that wouldn't be sturdy enough on their own. They're more affordable, but not as durable or valuable as solid opals.

Simulated Opals

Simulated opals are man-made materials designed to mimic the look of natural opals, often using resin, plastic, or glass. They can appear bright and colourful at first glance, but the effect tends to be more artificial or overly uniform compared to the real thing. Unlike other simulated or lab-grown gems (like rubies or sapphires), simulated opals don't come close to capturing the natural complexity or depth of real opals - at least in my opinion!

While simulated opals can be very inexpensive, they don't tend to wear well over time and usually lack the charm and individuality that makes opals so special. For that reason, I choose not to use them in our jewellery designs.

That means when you're wearing opal jewellery made here, you're often wearing something that's been born from our own landscape - quite literally.

Opals are captivating, but they do need a little extra love and care compared to harder gemstones. Whether your jewellery features solid opals or one of the more delicate varieties, here are my top tips for keeping them looking beautiful for years to come:

1. Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes

Opals are sensitive to rapid temperature shifts, which can cause cracking or crazing (a network of fine lines across the surface). Take your jewellery off before moving from a hot environment to a cold one (or vice versa), and don't leave it in direct sunlight or near heating vents for long periods.

2. Keep Opals Away from Harsh Chemicals

Opals don't play well with chemicals, so avoid wearing your pieces when cleaning, swimming in chlorinated water, or applying lotions, perfumes, or hairspray. These substances can dull the stone's appearance or, in the case of doublets/triplets, damage the layered construction. We also recommend you avoid getting your opals wet repeatedly or for lengthy periods.

3. Store Carefully

To avoid scratches or chips, store opal jewellery separately from harder gemstones like diamonds and sapphires. A soft pouch or a lined jewellery box is ideal. If you live in a particularly dry environment, keeping a small damp cloth in your storage container can help maintain a bit of ambient humidity - especially useful for older solid opals that may be more prone to drying out.

5. Wear with Care

Solid opals are more durable than you might think, but they're still not as tough as many other gemstones. To avoid knocks and scratches, it's a good idea to take your opal rings off during heavy-duty tasks like gardening, sports, or DIY projects. Also we recommend you don't swim, shower or bathe with opal jewellery on - especially repeatedly: opals and water don't get along when they are frequently exposed.

Most opals should be cleaned using mild soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners or steamers, as these can cause damage. Also avoid getting opals wet repeatedly or for extended periods. For triplets or doublets, avoid soaking them: a quick wipe-down with a barely damp cloth is safest.

It can be tricky to figure out. As an Australian jeweller, I have created hundreds of different Australian necklaces going back 30 years (true story!), so I know a thing or two about necklace lengths.

I've written this guide to help you figure it out and also to give you some ideas about how to style and wear necklaces to suit you and your clothing, whether from our Australian jewellery range or elsewhere. In this guide, you'll find:

Necklace Length Chart

Necklaces come in a variety of lengths, each sitting at different points on the body. Standard necklace lengths for women usually range from 40-85cm, with 45-50cm being the most common everyday length.

Our necklace length chart shows most standard necklace lengths you'll encounter when shopping online. It's a visual guide to indicate how each length sits on an average woman's body.

However, remember that not many people are 'average' in reality: everyone's proportions are different. To find the best fit for you, we highly recommend measuring yourself or comparing the length with existing necklaces that work for you (more on that below).

The most common lengths you'll encounter when shopping for necklaces online are:

• Choker (40cm / 16"): Sits snugly around the neck. Best for open necklines and layering.
• Standard / Princess (45-50cm / 18"-20"): The most versatile length, sitting just below the collarbone.
• Matinee (55-65cm / 22"-26"): Falls mid-chest and is great for business or casual wear.
• Opera (70-85cm / 28"-34"): Long and elegant, perfect for layering or formal outfits.
• Rope (85cm+ / 34"+): Can be worn as a long strand or doubled up.

These length measurements are the circumference or the total length of the necklace. In the case of a chain necklace, it would be from the tip of the clasp to the opposite end of the necklace. Any clasp findings on either end of the necklace are included in the overall length.

Do Necklace Lengths Include a Pendant?

The short answer is: no. The length given is only the circumference of the necklace. A pendant will almost always hang below this, most often suspended from a bail finding.
