We bought 4 apple trees last year and planted them. One had leaves 3 didn’t. The one with the leaves survived but the other 3 died. I can’t tell you anything about the planting because my husband did it, but he did all 4 in about an hour. The 3 trees never got leaves. I read that they should be planted without leaves, but I am afraid to do this based on last year’s success. Is it bad to plant them if they have leaves? The trees will be purchased from a home repair store in a container because we can exchange last years trees.

My Husband of 23 years died on Vererans Day (after being diagnoised with Lung Cancer) & I live alone. I am a 52 year widow & have no idea as to removal of old & installation of new, My finances are very tight & I can’t afford to have a professional do it. I have watched my Husband do all the fixing around the house so I DO have some knowledge of just how things work. PLEASE help me. Thank you so very much. I do have a slight disability with a left crushed broken ankle from last year, but I still do the best I can, I have repaired a lot of different things around the house; but this problem I’m somewhat lost in taking care of. Again thank you very much

I have a new home in Las Vegas Nevada, bought in Dec 2008, It now has 4 or 5 cracks in the ceiling all in the same room (great room) each is about 5 feet in length. I spoke to warrenty department and they advised taht I wait until closer to end of warranty period to have repaired for two reasons:
1. let the home go through a the heated summer as more could occur
2. They only do it one time during the warrenty period.
Recommendations please (thank you)

i want to remove an 8′ section of a 1st floor interior load bearing wall of a 2 story house with a concrete floor slab. how do I know if the floor slab will take the more concentrated loads from the wall next to the opening? any hints to support and remove the section of the wall? i expect to use 2-2×12’s as a header over the opening to catch the ceiling joists, supported by 3-2×4 jack studs on each end. temporary supports will be 4×6 headers on 2-2×6 columns each end, about 2 feet out from the existing wall. ceiling joists are running perpendicular to the load bearing wall. I have a fair amout of experience in home repairs, etc.

The overhead light in my living room stopped working. I’ve tried all I can think of to fix it and would REALLY rather not have to call an electrician. I am fairly competant with home repairs and such, but I’m totally stumped.
So far I’ve tried changing the light fixture and changing the light switch. The breaker also controls the light in my kitchen, so I’m pretty sure it isn’t the breaker or anything.
My attic is tiny. . . it goes over the LR light, but there’s maybe 1′-2′ clearance, so it’ll be pretty hard to get up there, but I can if that’s what it takes. . .
ANY help or ideas would be very appreciated. Thanks!

When we bought our old home, our home inspector said that we needed a new roof. It has two layers of shingles nailed into cedar wood (not cedar shingles). He said they used to use cedar in the old days, but no roofer would reuse the cedar. So the whole roof repair would be a tear off of the shingles and wood beneath.
We have a good contractor, but I’m not sure I understand his estimate and whether he understands that there is cedar that needs to be removed (a complete tear off) - although we told him that.
Here’s his estimate below - what does this mean in layman’s terms?
“Remove all existing roofing to lath, repair lath if needed and install 7/16″ OSB sheathing, #15 roofing felt and 30 year dimensional asphalt shingles with rollvent ridgevent. Includes cleanup and disposal of debris.
It also says “Lath repair will be billed extra. ” That’s what makes me wonder - what is “lath”? That’s not the cedar that needs to be removed is it? The cedar is the sheathing?
